I'm composing a medley of NES tunes for my college concert band. It will be around 8-9 minutes long and will premier in full next April; we might play the first half (which is more or less finished) in the fall. This is in preparation for a wholly original 15-20 minute piece that I'll be starting next summer and counting as my senior project.

Since today's rehearsal was a train wreck, the band director asked me to make a synthesized recording that the band could listen to. Five hours of Cakewalk later, and I've got a mock-up that, despite all the flaws of hasty computer music, lets one hear *almost* all of the instruments in a reasonable balance.

8-bit Overture, segments 1 and 2 - Metroid, Mega Man, and Jackal

I'm thinking about bringing a real NES to the podium during performance and actually switching cartridges between tunes. This might either be hilarious or really stupid. What do you think?

I just got to the megaman part. Good beginning, but the rest of it sucked balls.

You do know the mega man part is only four bars long, right?

"Bars"? What are these "bars" that you speak of?

Also, replace the megaman part with the FF1 battle theme, or the theme in the place where you fight Garlen.

Let me think about that for a minute. No.

Anyone who doesn't understand the term "bar" in a musical context is not invited to post in this thread.

I think I know what a bar is. It's like, a group of notes in groups of 3, 4, or 6. Either that or it's a whole line of those.

Fuck this. I'm going to post in the Gaming forum and cross my fingers that the helpful-response to retard ratio is a little better.

I think it is pretty great I always felt that some of the better nintendo tunes would translate good to concert band, but then again this stuff was just so great it works in almost any setting. Either way excellent job.

Jackal was kind of an obscure choice, but it works pretty great. and yes you will look pretty gay bringing an nes up, although it might give most people a clue what the hell you are playing.

Personally i didnt even notice the mega man portion in it.
