Boy Saves Kitten From Beating
JUPITER, Fla., 11:24 a.m. EDT May 3, 2002 - A 9-year-old saved a 4-week-old kitten from a possible deadly beating at the hands of two teenage boys.
"They were throwing (the kitten) up in the air. One threw it up in the air, the other kicked it," the boy said.
The boy said he couldn't believe what he was seeing when he was riding his bike in Jupter and saw two teenagers abusing two kittens near a canal.
He said he grabbed one of the kittens while the teens weren't looking.
"I ran off my bike and grabbed it, picked it up and ran home," the boy said. "I felt bad for them. I would have saved the other one if I could have, but it was too late for it. I did save the other one."
Now, the fourth grader -- who didn't want to use his name or show his face -- says he's scared.
"I just don't want them to find out it was me because I'm afraid they might hurt me," the boy said.
The boy's mother took the kitten to the Safe Harbor Animal Clinic. Doctors said the kitten is suffering from brain swelling and seizures. The animal is being fed through a tube, and it's still too early to tell if she will make it throug the ordeal alive.
"When he brought it home it looked dead, there was blood on the nose and mouth, it was limp, its eyes big," the boy's mother said.
The 9-year-old was honored with an Animal Kindness award and $100.
"I'm proud. I think he's pretty cool kid. I wish more kids were like that. I wish people would think before they do things," the boy's mother said.
