"I like to dissect girls. Did you know I'm utterly insane?" Patrick
Bateman smiles as he carelessly tells this to Paul over dinner. It's
too bad Paul wasn't completely with it, otherwise he might have
avoided the things to come later in the evening. American Psycho
floored me when I first saw it. I wasn't expecting much at all, and
instead, I saw a brilliant movie unfold before my eyes. It's more of a
horror/drama than just a plain ol' horror flick.
By the time they get back to Patrick's apartment, Paul is completely
drunk and wondering why the floor is covered with newspapers and why
Patrick is wearing a raincoat... gee I wonder. Patrick then busts out
an amazing speech about Huey Lewis and the News:
"Their
early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports
came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercial
and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new
sheen of consimante professionalism that really gives the songs a big
boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a
far much more bitter, cynical sense of humor. In '87, Huey released
this, Fore, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed
masterpiece is "Hip to be Square", a song so catchy, most people
probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not
just about the pleasures of conformity, and the importance of trends,
it's also a personal statement about the band itself."
And with that, it's time
for Patrick to go to work on Paul.
I've always loved cheesy
80's music, and Huey Lewis always ranked right up there with Rick
Astley. So when I saw him give that incredible speech in American
Psycho just before brutally chopping Paul to death, I damn near fell
out of my chair laughing. It's really a brilliant movie with tons of
classic lines. So if you haven't seen it, do yourself a favor and
check it out if for no other reason than to see him give speeches
about Huey Lewis or Whitney Houston just before he kills somebody. You
won't regret it (but whatever you do, stay the hell away from the
sequel). And now, here's a tiny Flash tribute of mine to Patrick
Bateman... a Huey Lewis fan and a swell guy.
Keep in mind, this guy
is set to play the new Batman. Kinda makes you wonder what he's gonna
do to any criminals that get in his way, eh?
