Review: How am I reviewing this album seventeen days before it comes out? The CD fairy. Now, when Dez Fafara left Coal Chamber ages ago to form a proper metal band named Devildriver, I was skeptical. Of course I was; I was fifteen and Coal Chamber was awesome. Now? Now I'm 23, and Devildriver is pretty amazing. Their newest offering, "Beast", gives us more of what Devildriver has been giving us since their inception: chugging guitars, heavy drum beats, fitting bass lines, and scream-with-me style vocals.

The album starts off with the industrial-esque drumbeats of "Dead To Rights" before the guitar kicks in and lets you know that, yes, you are about to get your asses kicked by metal. Before getting the album, I'd heard two songs purposely leaked by Roadrunner Records on the Devildriver facebook page ("Dead To Rights" and "Bring The Fight To The Floor", the first two songs on the album). While these songs were good, I noticed some deception here... they didn't give us their best off the bat.

When we get to track three is when things pick up heavily. "Hardened" is good, "Shitlist" (my personal favorite) is just unadulterated badassery, the same with "Talens Out (Teeth Sharpened)", with some explicit groove-metal guitar stylings thrown in. After this the album flows somewhat predictably (but not badly) with the slowest song on the album, "Lend Myself To The Night", being the last track.

Overall? If you like Devildriver, this is a must-buy. Don't like them? Don't buy it, it's Devildriver being Devildriver. Wanting to check them out? I'd give this a pass and buy their previous album, "Pray For Villains". This album is good, it's real good... it's just not Pray For Villains.

Overall rating: WholeWholeWholeHalf
(Scored on a 0.5 - 5 pickles rating: 0.5 being the worst and 5 being the best)

Heh Dommin I was right there with you when you said you had your reservation about Dez healing Chamber to form Devildriver, and your right, I think its one of the best decisions any ones ever made in metal. Great review and your totally right about Pray for Villains, if you want Devildriver at their absolute best that's the album to get.

Thanks Starscream. Don't know if you've heard this album or not, but if you're a fan, it's definitely a must-grab. If just for the song Shitlist.
