Review: I have the misfortune of being a very jumpy person. I don't like crap that jumps out at me. Yet I still find myself being drawn toward horror games. And when I started doing Let's Plays on Youtube, I wanted a simple horror game for the NES. My boyfriend suggested Uninvited, one of the MACVenture Trio — alongside its brothers Shadowgate and Déjà Vu.

The story is simple enough; after you crash your car during a storm, you come around to discover that you are before a mysterious mansion. Oh, and your sister decided to run off. Typical. Anyway, you decide to throw caution to the wind and begin breaking and entering, not concerned with possible angry homeowners with shotguns. When you begin to explore the house, though, you discover that nothing is like it seems... also, there's only one room with a toilet.

The game is very much like a Choose Your Own Adventure book. You pick up items, discover tricks and traps, and any wrong move means you're dead. There's a variety of interesting deaths, from dead ends to ghosts, to even self-inflicted deaths (way to go, genius).

The music is quite fitting to the atmosphere, and even now I can find myself humming the theme of the little dancing monster, as much as I wanted to punt that little bastard. The graphics are what you'd expect from an NES game—and the guy who owned the mansion had no sense of interior decorating. Maybe he was trying to follow Feng Shui.

I did enjoy the game; it required a lot of out-of-the-box thinking, and I had to backtrack a few times in my quest to go get my idiot sister out of whatever trouble she got herself in. I won't reveal to you where exactly she is, but I will say I facepalmed when I found out. Out of the three MACVenture games, I think I enjoyed Uninvited the most.

Great choice for a review Tanuki! The uninvited as well as the other two mentioned are three of my favorite NES games. Shadowgate is my personal favorite but I found the Uninvited the most challenging, thanks for reminding me of these classics time to emulate them up!

Love all of the MACVenture games. They have real good re playability for me, I guess it's all the fun ways to die.

This is new to me, although I do recognize the Shadowgate influence on it. I wonder how long can a game of this nature actually be.

To give you an idea, a friend of mine, who knew Shadowgate inside and out, ran me through the game in, probably, under an hour. (Died once, because I clicked on the wrong thing at one point. Gave her a nice *facepalm* moment that I think she's forgotten about, thankfully...)

In this age of walkthroughs, it's very easy to get past the puzzles, but back in the day, when all you had was that hint hotline from Nintendo Power, it can last you a bit longer. At least until you figure out all the secrets and memorize them *laughs*

Deja Vu was always one of my favorite NES games. :3

I always thought the guy on the front cover was Dick Tracy.

I was sold on Uninvited the moment I saw the screenshot of the Scarlet O'Hara of Death in an old Nintendo Power magazine I used to have. I thought that was just an awesome way to die, thinking you could literally flirt with Death.

I still remember that lovely moment where you use the No-Ghost bottle or whatever it is.
Good lord, that moment showed me that point-and-click games can be really anal about puzzle solutions.

On the main page the small pic looks like Mars Attacks. Which makes me want to play Destroy all humans!
