Review: Back in high school, I really enjoyed Powerman 5000 in part because it was the sort of heavy industrial music you'd hear from bands like Static X and, understandably, Rob Zombie. Imagine my excitement when I heard that the band was turning out another CD in the summer of '03.

The band's first few CDs were definitely more industrial-sounding, whereas in Transform, the band started taking on more of a punk feel to it. The songs are still pretty catchy, but vocalist Spider started working in odd cultural references and the occasional political jab in place of his previous obsession with old sci fi stuff.

In a way, I suppose longtime fans of the band can look at this album as the first signs that the band was getting further away from its original metal roots and heading deeper into punk territory. Nothing wrong with punk, mind you, but the problem with having a drastic change in what musical genre your band plays can feel a bit like a slap in the face to the people who helped you make it in the beginning.
