Review: The Aquabats have a lot of awesome albums, but nothing more epically enjoyable than the classic The Fury of the Aquabats!. The second you hear the opening notes of "Super Rad", you know you're in for a damned fun time. This is their most ska-oriented album, so fans who like the brass instruments tend to like this album more than their later guitar and keyboard driven work. The Aquabats write songs that are not only hilarious, but insanely catchy as well, and there are none catchier than on this album.

If you have any sense of humor at all, it's hard not to enjoy songs like "Magic Chicken!", "Cat With 2 Heads!", and "Captain Hampton and the Midget Pirates!". In addition to songs about ridiculous characters and dastardly villains, they've got a couple of love songs mixed in there, like "Red Sweater!" and the somewhat (surprisingly) depressing "My Skateboard!"

They also did new versions of three songs off their first album, The Return of the Aquabats!: "Martian Girl", "Idiot Box", and "Playdough". These versions are far superior to the originals, fueled by a new insane energy that wasn't quite at the same level on their previous album. Having these three songs to compare make it plainly evident that the Aquabats hadn't quite found their voice prior to this, as they perform with a confidence here that was previously unheard.

Their later albums have more musical variation across the songs, but I don't think any of them quite capture the same insane carefree feeling of fun that's present here. I have no doubt that the Aquabats have their share of haters--people who think the music is too silly, stupid or immature, but as far as I'm concerned, the day that I decide my Aquabats cds are too "childish" to listen to anymore will be a sad day indeed.
