Review: Andrew W.K. is here to have a good time, and no one is more angry about that than Andrew W.K. I have no idea whether this was the artist's intention or not, but Andrew W.K.'s album of angrily growled party songs is hilariously enjoyable. Featuring twelve catchy no-substance anthems about the apparent rage he feels when confronted with the idea of getting drunk and enjoying himself, I can listen to this cd over and over in the car without getting sick of it.
I first heard this guy in a friend of mine's car. It was playing in the background and it took a couple songs before I really started to get into his whole "ANGRY PARTY" shtick, but I pretty quickly asked who we were listening to and not too long after that I had the cd myself.
There's not a lot of variation in the songs--nearly every single one of them is a short up-tempo relentless guitar-and-keyboard driven piece where Andrew yells furiously at the listener about how he's going to get drunk, or how beautiful this girl is, or how he loves New York City. Clearly all topics to be enraged about. But there's just something inherently awesome about someone angrily screaming a tribute to some girl's beauty instead of the socio-political rant you might expect.
The thing is, it's not particularly great music--the songs are all fairly simple in their construction but it's endlessly entertaining. Something about the whole package--the fun, catchy songs that would almost be bubble-gum if not for the angry, violent persona he has created for himself in his vocal delivery and album art (the cover where he appears sporting a nose gushing blood, and the back image where he stands arms crossed, angrily glaring at the photographer as if he could wish him dead if he concentrated and channeled his hate hard enough)--it's all tremendously endearing and entertaining, and it makes me laugh every single time I listen. And the fact that I'm still not really sure whether it's earnest or tongue-in-cheek just makes me love it all the more.
