Review: You love the holidays, right? You love video games, right? Of course you do... so why not combine the best of both worlds? Well, it looks like you're in luck, because a chiptunes artist by the name of Doctor Octoroc has released an album of classic Christmas tunes all done in the style of various 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System games.
What I really appreciate about the album is not only are the songs done in NES style, but each of the eighteen tracks are modeled after music from some of the most popular games on the system. Just take a look at the track names and you're sure to know what game they're inspired by. "Little Drummer Nemo", "Super Jingle Bros.", "The Legend Of Noel" and "Have Yourself A Final Little Fantasy" are just a few of the amusing titles you'll find within.
It's completely instrumental, so don't expect to hear any Christmas carolers on this album, but you'll have no problem listening to those 8-bit bleeps 'n bloops while waiting for Santa's fat ass to slide down the chimney.
You can listen to samples of the album and purchase it here. The album was originally released for free online, but I highly recommend buying a physical copy because it not only comes with additional tracks, but the festive pixel art is definitely worth owning. "8-Bit Jesus" is highly recommended both for fans of video game music and for those of you who would simply like something a little less conventional to listen to over the holidays.
