i looked about for rom hacking stuff last night and found a super mario bros text hacking program. within about 30 seconds of that i made my first rom hack. now instead of '1 player game' it has 'i like toast' and instead of '2 player game' it has 'we like toast' all i need to do is change the coins into toast and im set |

A good way to get practice at using a hex editor would be to start by editing apple IIe files since thier pure ASCII and you dont really need to know anything about how hex notation and charecter sets work. Most editors can handle searching for "press return to size up the situation", and most people can change that to "press return to fuck up the situation". But I must admit, after skimming through chojins link, there's a shit load I don't know (yet). |

That doesn't work on 99.9% of console roms because said roms aren't in ANSI. You need to build a character set yourself in a table. http://www.romhacking.com/docs/general/text/romdoc.zip This is a really good guide and it's what I started on, but none of the links at the bottom of it work. Just search for the filenames on google and you'll get them. I use Hex Workshop for everything but text editing because of the previously mentioned character sets. So, for text editing, use Thingy. It's at the bottom of that doc. Yeah. |

ROM HACKING FOR DUMMIES Rom hacking is easy if all you want to do is change text. Step 1: get a hex editor (freeware) and open the game's rom in it. Step 2: Scroll through and look for words and phrases that resemble those in the game and change them. Don't make the file any smaller or larger, and DON'T change anything thats NOT in quotation marks. Anything in quotation marks is usually in game text even if a sentence is broken up into different parts of the file. step 3: Save it and test it. Only do a little bit at a time in case you fuck things up and the game crashes. Thats all you need to know. I did that picture of the oregon trail guy selling cartons of marlboros in photoshops and captions using this method. |
