Well it wouldn't be a remake of the film, it would be a different interpretation of the book.

But yeah, they'd fuck up either because:
1. people would be expecting a remake of the movie and be confused
2. they just do an overall bad job at translating the book into a film

Ken Kesey refused to watch the movie because they changed it so much. Either he refused to watch it, or he finally did many years later when he saw it on TV in the middle of the night. I don't remember, but it's a little nugget of trivia I knew in 2004!
