Actually, there IS this thing where they use pictures from random cameras to detect "Criminal Profiles". I believe that almost every form of surveliance in america is [planning to be] hooked up to this program, from ATM cameras to the one's on top of Traffic signals.
The way they work, is they have a picture of a person, they strip the person of everything, till it's nothing but their facial/head structure, then they have a "Database" of criminal profiles, and also a program, that autodetects the similarities(live feed I believe). It is Akin to fingerprinting, but you don't need a soda can or a random surface to detect it, and it can be done to anyone.

It would be ironic if the next step was for every door handle and counter in america to have fingerprint autodetection things, or like the little cameras in minority report that scan your eyes..
