So today on 9/9/09, Sega announces that by 2010 there will be a new Sonic coming out and only leaving the viewers/fans with this teaser.
I'm left completely dumbfounded and pissed. I have no clue what's going on here but I can only assume that SEGA is taking a break (hopefully fucking retiring) from making these half assed abominations of Sonic in 3D. According to a couple of sources from SEGA, some guy named Ken Balough of SEGA of America stated "Old-school Sonic fans have long asked to see Sonic return to a more 2D style of gameplay", it may be apparent that they're going to take it back to the 2D style, that is unless SEGA and the masses are talking out of their asses. So this Ken Balough goes on to state "Many liked the daytime stages in Unleashed, but wanted to see a game that plays purely similar to the early games of the Genesis. Project Needlemouse is that critical first step that brings Sonic back to his 2D roots." Only hope this is not some hyped up piece of crap but I'm willing to hope it's not going to end up like Sonic 3D Blast atleast.
It seems pretty promising...

The crowning moment of the game's horribleness is the scene where you're talking to some scientist with no eyes, and the scene keeps cutting away to your little fairy douchebag sidekick for comic relief while he complains about how hungry he is. He goes, I'LL JUST DIE IF I DON'T EAT SOMETHING, and then keels over, and a little ghost him comes out of his corpse and makes this WNAH WNAH WNAH WNAH WNAH WNAH WNAH WNAH WNAH WNAH WNAH WNAH WNAH WNAH WNAH WNAH WNAH WNAH WNAH WNAH WNAH WNAH WNAH WNAH WNAH WNAH WNAH WNAH WNAH WNAH WNAH WNAH WNAH WNAH WNAH WNAH WNAH WNAH WNAH WNAH WNAH WNAH WNAH WNAH WNAH WNAH WNAH WNAH WNAH WNAH WNAH WNAH WNAH noise fucking over and over and over and over again. It's like having Zeldasbiggestfan imitate the low health alert from Zelda by pinching his nostrils shut and doing the sound. For 5 minutes. Without stopping.
This is viewed by Sonic Team as a hilarious aside.
Oh and uh the game's pretty awful too, but I also hated the Genesis Sonics so take that as you will.
I am too hurt to be excited by this. Sonic unleashed was supposed to be their return to form. If it's good, it's great, if it's shit, I wont get disappointed.
If there was a good Sonic game since 2 then I have blocked it out with all the other crap. If this turns out to be any good I wont know because its too little too late and Im not buying. The Sonic franchise is dead.

That's what everyone thought Unleashed would be. They showed trailers of a 2.5D Sonic, and this catchy music, and we all thought they finally "got it". It was going to be a great reboot.
Fast forward to Stretch Armstrong the WolfHog pretending to be both Kratos and the Prince of Persia, which took up more game time than the actual Sonic stages.
They'll just make a 2.5D game. The gameplay of the good games, combined with the graphics of the newer suckass games. Everybody win.
I find this easy to believe. I think SEGA is responding to the reaction of how upset the consumers got when they realized that the final product wasn't more like the Sonic 2.5D demo they saw first.

But that has been the reaction to 99% of Sonic games over the past decade, and nothing has changed. To my eyes I see it cheaper to make a shit game in one year and make mediocre sales, than it is to take five or six years to make a great game and sell only reasonably better.
They pump out a new Sonic game every year, make budget, and start again. If they announced this new game to be released in 2012 I would maybe be getting my hopes up, it would prove they are in it for the long(ish) haul. A decent next-gen Sonic game is also one of the signs of the Apocalypse, and project needlemouse could coincide with the Mayan prediction for the end of the world.
All the more reason for them to crank out a 2.5D game and throw it up on Live Arcade/PSN. It'd be much easier and cheaper than making a full 3D game, and it's more or less what the fans want anyway.

But Unleashed was unvieled the same way. Oh shit, old school Sonic! Wait...you're holding forward an awful lot...and those are Quick Time Events. Okay why am I playing a bad beat 'em up and werewolves do NOT do THAT.
Plus, this is a tiny development window. Unleashed came out last year, so either they started this immediately after their last game (they would. It's not like Sega makes much money from other games these days) or they waited a few months to start it, resulting in about a year of development time from a company that has done everything it can to rape its mascot dry of any potential sales it can bring them.
There was a post written up about a year ago by a guy from Sega Europe who met the Japanese dev team, talking about how they didn't even want to make Sonic games, but had to because that's the only thing that sells in western countries for them (Sonic bombs in Japan).
I really have no reason to believe this is different from the last reboot (Unleashed) or the reboot before that (Sonic the Hedgehog 2006) or the reboot before that (Secret Rings) or the reboot before that (Sonic Rush).
All the more reason for them to crank out a 2.5D game and throw it up on Live Arcade/PSN. It'd be much easier and cheaper than making a full 3D game, and it's more or less what the fans want anyway.
That would make sense. Sorry, I assumed that this would be a 'full' type of game. Flashy graphics, 360, PS3 for Christmas type of deal.
