Never heard, but I shall check her out.

EDIT: Sorry. That is a bit pointless to just post about not hearing of some musician, or something, but yeah, I'll be sure to check out some of her songs.

if you can get your hands on "between the devil and the deep blue sea" by her, you'll be utterly floored by her range.

it's a shame she's dead

i don't think we'll ever hear a new voice as wonderful as hers again.

It is a shame that she is dead, it is worse that there are people that can honestly say they have not heard of her.

It is OK to say you do not like that kind of music, but to not have listened to it and made that decision is awful.

I haven't managed to find that one. I just heard "I only have eyes for you". I donno if that is my type of music (although I don't mind jazz), but I see what you mean there.

oh, man! she's one of my ultimate favorites! even my ry-guy knows all the words to her "old mother hubbard." he used to do a little doggy thingy when it got to the "find me a bone" part. :P

one of my favorite recordings (so far) is a live set from the savoy ballroom in harlem. i think it's in the late '30s when she was playing with chick webb. another favorite is the "mack the knife" she recorded live at some time when she totally made up all the words but the first verse.

her volume of recorded music is astounding. and she was an amazing woman. she had to have her legs amputated from diabetes complications, and still sang afterward, though not very much before she died.

Have you heard of Nico? Although she doesn't have the same vocal range, there is something beautiful in her voice and the way she sings. I was moved by "Eulogy to Lenny Bruce".

"you must take the a-train to sugar hill way up in harlem."
i wonder if that's where the sugar hill gang got their name...

no, no you didn't!

i LOVE that version of mack the knife that she ad libs. it really showcases her personality and how much fun she seemed to be.

i really wish that i could have seen her live. her and billie. i just think that if i was going to see billie i would have to be really down in the dumps and at the end of my rope. that's why i like ella so much, even when she sings the sad songs she's got this cheer in her voice that makes you think that she's still smiling on the inside.

Her duet with Louis Armstrong on "Summertime" was pretty good.

i agree. i love that duet. another great one with the two of them is "they can't take that away from me." i love it when louis calls ella "dearie." :P

i know what you mean about billie's voice, glow. she's got a tragic tone, kind of edgy, but at the same time a bit smoother than ella, most of the time, i think. ella was much more versatile, it seems to me, though maybe that was due to her much-larger reportoire.

have you heard of anita o'day? someone online turned me on to her a few years ago, and i was shocked i hadn't heard of her before. beautiful voice, sort of a mixture between ella and billie, possibly, but definitely in the same genre.

do you work on some of ella's tunes in your lesson, mle? i took voice lessons when i was a music major my freshman year of college, but i utterly detested it; i would've loved jazz much better than classical. in retrospect, however, it taught me a lot about breathing, which helped me get through many nights of singing with head colds. :/

the name anita o'day sounds familiar, but i'm not gonna say that i could recognize her voice if i heard it. i will be checkin her out, though, now that you've mentioned her.

there's a young lady named chris conner whose voice i also like. jaeger bought me one of her cds a long time ago and i've just recently plucked it out of my tower to listen to it again. she's a little more distinct and i don't wanna say nasally, but it seems like her voice is coming from up instead of down. i don't know a lot about voice to talk about it like that. i can only describe what i hear.

that version of summertime that sniper was talking about made it on to my tape tree cd. i hum that song to cub a lot. BECAUSE I AM GOOD LOOKIN
