The Wilkins Ice Shelf, a large sheet of floating ice south of South America, is connected to two Antarctic islands by a strip of ice. That ice "bridge" has lost about 2,000 square kilometers (about 772 square miles) this year, the ESA said. A satellite image captured November 26 shows new rifts on the ice shelf that make it dangerously close to breaking away from the strip of ice -- and the islands to which it's connected, the ESA said.
So when this "island of ice" breaks away, I would like to be the first to claim ownership of it. Perhaps declare a soveriegn nation state and then habor terrorists there. How does one "call dibs" on a newly formed land mass drifting through international waters?

I think a British wealthyman bought an oil rig and declared independance 10-15 years ago. I think he is still going strong. Located just past international water line away from England.

here it is it's actually a small sea fort not an oil rig. It even has a deck gun! non-functional though.
