Cheney warns against vote for Kerry

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Vice President Dick Cheney said Tuesday that the nation faces the threat of another terrorist attack if voters make the "wrong choice" on Election Day, suggesting that Sen. John Kerry would follow a pre-Sept. 11 policy of reacting defensively.

The Kerry-Edwards campaign immediately rejected those comments as "scare tactics" that crossed the line.

"It's absolutely essential that eight weeks from today, on Nov. 2, we make the right choice, because if we make the wrong choice then the danger is that we'll get hit again and we'll be hit in a way that will be devastating from the standpoint of the United States," Cheney told about 350 supporters at a town-hall meeting in this Iowa city.

If Kerry were elected, Cheney said the nation risks falling back into a "pre-9/11 mind-set" that terrorist attacks are criminal acts that require a reactive approach. Instead, he said Bush's offensive approach works to root out terrorists where they plan and train, and pressure countries that harbor terrorists.

Cheney pointed to Afghanistan as a success story in pursuing terrorists although the Sept. 11 mastermind, Osama bin Laden, remains at large. In Iraq, the vice president said, the United States has taken out a leader who used weapons of mass destruction against his own people and harbored other terrorists.

"Saddam Hussein today is in jail, which is exactly where he belongs," Cheney said.

Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards issued a statement, saying, "Dick Cheney's scare tactics crossed the line today, showing once again that he and George Bush will do anything and say anything to save their jobs. Protecting America from vicious terrorists is not a Democratic or Republican issue and Dick Cheney and George Bush should know that."

"John Kerry and I will keep America safe, and we will not divide the American people to do it," Edwards added.

The candidates are campaigning hard for Iowa's seven electoral votes. Democrat Al Gore narrowly won the state in 2000. Bush has campaigned in the state five times in the last month, and Cheney has made three stops.

Hours before Cheney spoke, the Congressional Budget Office said this year's federal deficit will hit a record $422 billion. Cheney, in praising Bush's tax cuts, noted that the CBO said this year's projected deficit will be smaller than analysts had expected.

That is just nuts. How can you support or even respect this administration after a comment like that? :/

Speaking the language of the people used to be about getting them pissed off, and showing them how they were being exploited by the big guy. It used to be words spoken by a small guy, to a small guy.

Now, it's motherfucking Cheney trying to scare people into submission.

What pisses me off about this is that Cheney KNOWS what he is doing. He's not some poor, small shrimp who really buys all that 'OMG AMERICA IS UNDER SIEGE' crap. He's the ringleader who consciously lies and administers this mindfuck TO HIS OWN PEOPLE knowing very well that he's not helping them one bit!

Hey, I know that's how it goes. I'm not pissed off because I just found out. I'm not surprised either. And I don't believe that change is possible, especially not short-term change.

It fucking gets to me, though. Especially when they fuck with the good but dumb people. Makes me wanna blow stuff up...

If find it ironic that the administration has repreatedly said future terror attacks on the US are inevitable, and now Chenney is saying if we vote Kerry we'll get attacked. If both those statements are to be tken as true, can we take this as a Republican surrender?

"Cheney, in praising Bush's tax cuts, noted that the CBO said this year's projected deficit will be smaller than analysts had expected."

Hey! That could be turned into a great Republican slogan!

"Vote Republican! We still have the biggest defficit ever, but it's not quite as big as we thought it might be!"

Or maybe:

"George W. Bush. Careening downhill slower than you thought he was going to be."

Or

"We've turned the corner and while deficits are still growing, the speed of that growth is not as mind numbing as we were worried it might have been."

Or

"Driving America off a cliff more slowly than previously predicted."

"Vote Republican! We still have the biggest defficit ever, but it's not quite as big as we thought it might be!"

But it isn't, and I believe you know that. Let's keep it honest!

"It's absolutely essential that eight weeks from today, on Nov. 2, we make the right choice, because if we make the wrong choice then the danger is that we'll get hit again and we'll be hit in a way that will be devastating from the standpoint of the United States..." ~Dick

IS THAT A THREAT, DICK?!?! ARE YOU THREATENING ME?!?!one1

Well, actually, yes I am, Matt. If you don't vote for me and Dubya this year, I'm gonna get one of our special Haliburton subsidiaries to send some 'private contractors,' brown in color, to your house to go all Saddam on your ass. How you like them apples? I noticed you're not on the pioneer list... Haven't you figured out that's the only way to keep your city safe from terror attacks? What, you don't like your family? ~Dick

UM, WELL... I WAS JUST TRYING TO BE FUNNY. I DIDN'T REALLY EXPECT YOU TO ANSWER.

That's what you get for thinking, dumbass. Now, be a good little bitch and vote Republican this November, OR IT'S YOUR ASS, you punk. My daughter's more of a man than you or your little cocksucker friend, Badnarik. What a bunch of sissies. Get the fuck out of my sight." ~Dick

*runs away, crying*

"Bush/Cheney are a sure winner."

Thanks, psychic Ronnie! Say, do you know the deffinition of the word 'sure' in this context?

As that sure as in 'we're sure there are weapons of mass destruction', or sure as in 'we're sure we've realeased all of W's service records'? Maybe it's as in 'I'm sure we don't support the formation of a 9/11 committee' or as in 'we're sure we've found the weapons of mass destruction.' maybe its the kind of sure as in 'we sure will create jobs during our adminsitration.' or 'we sure did inherit this recession'. Oh! I know! 'We sure did accomplish that mission'! or maybe 'The world sure is safer!' or 'I'm sure my administration has no connection to Swift Boat Vets for Truth' or 'their lawyer sure isn't my campaign lawyer anymore'. Maybe it's as in 'I sure will report for drills in Boston.'

What will you do if they loose? In the face of your smug sureness, how will you even walk upright if your universe gets re-ordered? Well, 'sure' is a flexible word for you. I'm 'sure' you'll find some way to cope.

You seriously think that there is more of a chance that the terrorists will attack if Kerry wins? Why the fuck should they care who's president?

Funny, I seem to recall the Bush administration being unable to prevent a certain terrorist attack in 2001...

Honestly, there is probably less of a chance if Kerry gets elected, considering how Bush likes to get up in the middle east's biznatch.

Sorry... Didn't see this one...

Deficits are meaningless if viewed outside their relationship to GDP. For example, if I tell you my own personal budget for this month is running a deficit of $600, your first question would likely be "Well, how much do you make per month?" If I "bring home" $5000 per month, that deficit isn't likely to be as big a problem as it would be were I making minimum wage, right?

The "Biggest Deficit EVER" bullet point is a strawman, anyways. Bush ran the Texas economy exactly like he's running America's domestic show. When the left side of the aisle bitches about deficits, they're mostly just complaining about the post-Reagan tactic of spending the money before the Dems can get ahold of it. While it's true that Democrats have become, at least in practice, more fiscally conservative than the actual conservatives, this is mostly because they lost their power in the Gingrich Revolution. Deficits weren't a big problem before that, when they had all the power.
