Democracy is actually what, for reasons which I don't understand, is taught in High Schools as being called "direct democracy." No one actually uses that term, though. Democracy can only be direct; individuals voting without a representative. What is taught as "representational democracy" is more along the lines of what a republic is. I have no idea who came up with those two different forms of "democracy" but no one of any credibility actually uses those terms.
I only had a single teacher in my primary education who pointed this out so I guess if people don't read on their own or don't take classes in university that cover these things, they can't even know what form of government they live under.
