I tried watching his show a few times. I must be one of the only people that don't really care for him. From what I've seen of louie its just bad stuff happens to him then he kinda mopes about it for a while. Then he gripes about it too but not in a funny way.

How far off is that?

Just wrapped up season 4 of Dexter.

How, uh, uncomfortable and horrible.

I was sort of using Tim Curry as my gold standard of "creepy as fuck when he wants to be", but I think John Lithgow could give him a run for his money. I'll never be able to watch Third Rock the same way again.

Also, I'm in the middle of the second Dexter book. Although it's marginally better than the first one, I still hate it. It's bizarre to me that the show can have more plot development and character depth than the novel. The writing style is "Junior High AP English".

For an asexual sociopathic killer, book-Dexter sure spends a lot of time describing women's hot bodies :writtenforguysbyguys

Started season 5 of Dexter. After season 4's creepiness, season 5 feels sort of let-downish. The episodes all seem like they're over too fast and not very fulfilling. Like they're fitting in less, or something.

Anyone watch Wilfred the other night? It was fucking weird and I'm not sure if I'll like it or not. I mean, it was interesting to watch, but it wasn't as funny as I think it should have been, being a comedy. And Elijah Wood just doesn't fit for me yet.

I don't know...I like the show ok, not as much as Oz but I have the same "Oh, I'll just see it through" feeling.

The first season, the women annoyed the hell out of me. All of them.

The second season, Lila annoyed the hell out of me.

The third season was okay for a while, but then Jimmy Smits started to annoy the hell out of me.

The fourth season, I saw John Lithgow's ass a lot. But I think he was probably the best "badguy" of all of them.

The fifth season is almost like it's written by an entirely different staff. The plot develops so slowly and it's all dialogue, dialogue, dialogue. Shot of Dexter's face with words coming out of it. Shot of Lumen's face with words coming out of it. Back to Dexter. Back to Lumen. Repeat.

I don't give a shit about any of the badguys this season. I've heard them promise that season 6 will be way better.

I finished the second Dexter book and hated that, too, but I'd already bought it so I felt like I had to read it.

What I really hated about season 5 was the last episode where Deb is in the same room as Dexter and that annoying sidekick and she doesn't even open the curtain to see who is behind it. Fuck that. And at the end, everything is restored to status quo.

But the season was pretty dumb all around, so that didn't really suprise me that much.

I know it's only two episodes in but i'm pretty disappointing with this seasons Curb. Personally I though they should of focused more on Larry's divorce if they weren't going to send him to New York right away. The only one I really liked was the one where his rabbi asked if he could bring a "survivor" to dinner. He assumed, since it was a rabbi, that he was talking about a Holocaust survivor, so he invited another Holocaust survivor. Then the "survivor" turned out to be some douche who was on Survivor and wouldn't shut up about how much he suffered on the show, and he and the real concentration camp survivor got in a fight. That was a good one.

The Ricky Gervais

I haven't laughed so hard in a long time. The shows structure is pretty ingenious. It's called the Gervais show but every merit of it revolves around Pilkington. Pilkington by himself wouldn't work though, he needs Gervais and Stephen to play the hostile straight man. One thing I don't like is Stephen and Gervais' intellectual pretensions, it makes them seem embarrassingly smug though this may be the cartoonist's fault.

k0k0
Jul 24th, 2011, 06:54 PM
I listened to the Ricky Gervais podcasts a few years before watching the show, and I find the show more enjoyable with the animations. I hear that since they're running out of material for the show from the original podcasts, they're going to start recording new stuff soon.

It's lead me to watch even more shows with karl pilkington in it and I'd suggest checking out "An Idiot Abroad" in which Karl is pretty much forced to travel to places, which he hates and has an awful time, but it's just too funny how unhappy he is doing things normal people would dream of doing.

Watched the first episode of Falling Skies the other day. It's actually pretty good but Dr. Carter is one whiny bitch. I love how he whines to the commander that he, a college military history professor with no military experience, should be in charge over a 14 year military vet with combat experience.

Ha i'm sure the crusty vet fucks up somehow but Dr. Carter acts like he should rightfully have taken over the platoon/squad/whatever over a trained veteran. In the end i'm sure he proves himself worthy but at that time all the viewer knows is that one guy is a book learner and the other has actual military experience. Not too hard of a decision if you ask me.

I watch both too, but I watch the Canadian DD, which has Kevin O'Leary and Robert Hjeravic. It's a lot less dramatic than the American one, obviously, and they show a lot more of the ridiculous ideas. All in all, it just seems a lot more fun. Shark Tank is kind of exactly what I'd expect from a show of that sort on an American network, but I still like it. Except that FUBU guy, who I can't stand.

The newest episode was the best of the season so far, it's definitely building towards something this year. Alot of people online seem to be feeling sorry for Jesse and hating Walt for what he's made him do, which drives me up the wall. How many times has Jesse fucked things up for Walt only for Walt to put himself in danger to put everything right again? Not to mention how many times Walt has murdered people now without whining about it. People also generally seem to hate him for the petty things he keeps doing this season, but for real, the guy is sure that he'll either be murdered or die of cancer in the near future. Give him a break.

synopsis of episode 4 from Tremors: The series

Things start going screwy when Tyler finds a foot near the side of the road and a hang-glider. Later, Burt and Tyler discover a delivery truck and the remains of the man who was supposed to be delivering Nancy's newkiln (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiln). With these attacks, Burt deduces that an Ass-Blaster is on the loose. However, before he and Tyler can go to work and kill the thing, two people from Vegas arrive. They reveal themselves to be hired hands for Sigmund and Ray, the magicians to whom Nancy sold the Ass-Blaster to in Tremors 3 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tremors_3), to recover their Ass-Blaster, Messerschmitt, after poachers failed to kidnap it. However, they severely screw up their first attempt to capture the Ass-Blaster and one of the hired hands nearly dies. Realizing it is now too smart to be fooled by a ground trap, Burt decides to use a hang-glider to launch a snack for Messerschmitt. They end up successful and tie up Messerschmitt. Burt hands it over to Sigmund and Ray's hired hands to be returned to Vegas.

Their approach to storytelling is to give you an explosive start, boring middle, then a cliffhanger which leads to the next explosive start. The side stories seem tacked on and the whole show just layers on the cheeseyness of it all. That said, I watch it faithfully because my brain is somehow damaged in a way that I like to hate it.

I "won" two tickets to a theater screening of the new season of Dexter. Then when I went to print the pass, they pulled the old switcheroo and it was suddenly a screening of some new Showtime series with a "sneak peek" of Dexter.

I would have had to drive through downtown Cincinnati, which sucks under the best of circumstances, and if it had been a full preview episode of Dexter it would ALMOST have been worthwhile. I was pissed at the bait and switch, though, so I tried to give my tickets away. No takers :(

k0k0
Sep 11th, 2011, 03:34 PM
By screening of the new season, you made it seem like you were going to be sitting in a theater for 14 hours watching the whole next season. So it was only like a 15 minute preview or something? That's pretty shitty. I don't think I'd go to the theater to watch 2 hours of dexter, of course I'm not a huge fan. There's only so many times ghost dad can pop out and talk to dex before I don't even want to watch that episode. They should just change the show to dexter and ghost dad solving crimes.

Started watching The Mighty Boosh. It's hilarious and one of those shows I really should have seen years ago. Very original stuff. Closest comparison I can think of is Spaced, but the jokes are a bit different. It's one of those comedies, where the jokes sound really dumb on paper, but when you actually see it happen, it's laugh out loud funny. Recommended for everyone with a sense of humor.

Some seasons of Dexter I didn't like at all, but on the whole I really enjoy the show. When I signed up for the screening, I thought that I was sort of applying to be in sort of a focus-group kind of thing, and that maybe we would watch the first episode of the new season and maybe answer a questionnaire or something. But no, turns out they were just using the more popular show to draw people in for a shitty show.

If it had been the season premiere of Dexter, I probably would have gone. But if I want to watch a five minute commercial about the upcoming season, I can do that anywhere.

They also had in fine print on the tickets that they had overbooked at each location to "ensure a full house" and that no one was actually guaranteed a seat. So, you know, fuck them.

So I caught the first episode of a new season of survivor. I haven't watched survivor since season 1 or 2 (can't remember), so all the changes in it are really kind of stupid to me and it shouldn't be called survivor, but dudes on an island. From what I remember, in the original survivor they don't give them anything to help them. These people on the island now have rice and they have fire starting off. They're searching for some kind of hidden immunity thing too. They don't have to eat crazy things like bugs for food anymore. It just seems like they hang out at camp, then go do a challenge, then go back and hang out at camp some more before voting someone off. I want to see people try to 'survive', not hang out at camp. Oh well, might not catch any more of this show. We'll see how bored I get.

New workaholics was funny, a lot better than the first episode from last week.

Anders got drunk and woke up with bleach blond hair then started giving the other guy lip. The rowlf looking guy was all like "Whatever Ric Flair.....WHHOOOOOOOOOO!"

:LOL

Also in the new workaholics someone gets hit in the face and is all like "funky buttloving."

Then they're like "did he just say funky buttloving?"

Love rookie of the year.

Yeah, I read that yesterday. I am not sure if we should celebrate yet though. He doesn't have funding for it. Plus it'll take several studios that don't normally work together to do so.

China, Il on adult swim was excellent. I really hope that adult swim keeps this one because Brad Neely is a comedy king. They changed how the animation is...it's not single frames anymore, which I guess wouldn't make sense on tv. Plus they gave everyone pupils. But I was surprised at how fast I got used to them moving fluidly and how good it was.

From what I saw it kind of reminded me of Superjail, which is one of the greatest shows of all time. Second season wasn't as good as the first though.

I want to see more babycakes in China, il. I know most new people to the show will see him and think he's just the token stupid guy, but if you've seen the web animations, he's super deep. I wouldn't mind if it just focused on the professor brothers, but more babycakes would be nice for me.

As soon as you start hosting a gameshow and are a comedian, do you gotta go bald now? Howie mandell had good hair and so did steve harvey.

So I've been binging through some South Park for the last few weeks. Not in order, really, just jumping around here or there.

I've decided that the turning point of the series from awesome to shitty was the first episode they started 4th grade, halfway through Season 4. It's nothing but classic episode after classic episode until that point, which is where the forgettable episodes begin and there's more mediocre than good.

Cartman's character jumped the shark at the Scott Tenorman episode, which is early Season 5. Up until that point Cartman is dumb, naive, racist and intolerant not because he's an asshole but because he's a little kid who doesn't know any better. From that moment on Cartman is a conniving, plotting, evil little pseudo-genius who is racist and intolent in a completely different way that a little ignorant kid would be.

Episodes become unwatchable at around Season 7 or 8, when subtlety is thrown completely out the window in favor of repeating jokes over and over again or making one joke stretch the entirety of an episode. An example of the former is the Coon episode with the BP oil spill, where there are THREE goddamn instances where the BP guy apologizes while doing wacky things. An example of the latter is the Michael Jackson episode where it's all "haha we will try to charge a rich man for crimes he didn't commit just because he's black".

So yeah, the first three seasons are really the only good South Park. It's quick-paced and timeless. Episodes now focus on shitty topical humor and they have LONG GODDAMN DRAWN-OUT BORING DIALOGUE.

And the worst part about it, the WORST, is that nobody I know agrees. All my friends still love South Park to death just like they always have. I just find the newer episodes so mind-numbingly dull that it's hard for me to see what people still like about it >:

Don't worry Milhouse, I agree with you.

I think I started to hate it for the wrong reasons. I loved South Park when it started so much that I hated seeing it change in season four, with the new teacher, new theme music etc. What REALLY drove me up the wall though was that in season five they bizarrely began using stock music as incidental cues. I swear that before the fifth season all the music was written specifically for the show, but there is at least one cue in season five that I heard in an episode of King of the Hill, and there are other weird out of place cues that are obviously from elsewhere.

The other thing is the animation. I hate hate hate when there'll be an imitation 3d shot of Cartman or whoever. The one example I can think of is an episode in season 6 or 7 where Cartman prays to his Mel Gibson poster. It was so awkward and wrong. It's like The Simpsons when they realised that seeing Homer head-on or seeing Bart's face twist around when he spoke was disturbing, but in reverse. Matt and Trey want the animation to look worse for some reason.

Like you, I hated that one joke, usually topical, was stretched to fill an entire episode. I know that people are generally down on season 2, even Matt and Trey themselves, but it has real plots with jokes arising from the characters, the dialogue and the situation that they're in. Robert Redford or whatever celebrity will appear for two or three scenes of the episode, but it's not Mel Gibson running around throwing shit for twenty minutes.

What made it worse for me personally was that I was the biggest South Park fan I knew when it started, I liked it better than The Simpsons at the time (mostly because it had passed its peak; I was the biggest Simpsons fan I knew before South Park came along,) and I'm from the UK where South Park completely dissappeared from TV for two or three seasons. From season three it was pushed back later and later into schedules, season four arrived way later than usual, and season five arrived even later than that, I think almost a year later than it aired in the US. Season six didn't air on ANY channel, and I don't think season seven or eight did either. Eventually MTV picked it up and repeated all of the episodes we didn't get, and showed the new ones.

Obviously, I had turned to downloading them at season six when I had become impatient from the long wait I had for season five, so I got to see them. But I hated that people here had completely forgotten about it and acted like it was a terrible show that they didn't miss anyway. I tried to convince people that South Park was still good to no avail. Then MTV picked it up, people started watching again, and it got a second wind. Now people quote new South Parks, and I just think, "that episode is terrible, and where were you when it was still decent?"

I gave up on it for a few years after that, but in the last few months I've caught one or two when there's been nothing else on TV and actually really enjoyed it. I guess the distance has helped. I also may have just got lucky with the ones I stumbled across, as hardly any were current event based and were just about the kids being kids, such as the one where they all become wrestlers.

...What a long shitty post this is.

Even though I don't understand how anyone could possibly dislike Season 2, I couldn't agree with this more (and I could write an even lengthier tirade on the downfall of the Simpsons using this exact point). The very best of both shows happened when they were character-driven. Now they come up with plots first and try to wedge the characters into them.

Goddamn, it could take me days to sort out all the problems I have with the Simpsons post-Season 8. People keep telling me that it's picked up a little since the movie came out, but I refuse to even try again because I know it's not really better. I heard nothing but good things about the movie too, but there's no way I'll ever be interested.

I'm the same with The Simpsons and just like South Park I've seen some decent ones recently. I actually saw one new Simpsons that I'd go as far as to say I loved (although I can't remember a single thing about it, so that could be called into question.)

The movie has mainly the good writers from the past and I'd describe it as decent. I'd also describe it as being slightly funnier than the best Pixar films.

By the way, with people in the UK hating something then turning around and suddenly loving it: the same happened with Ali G. By the time he went to the States and got his HBO show, everyone I knew acted like they were above him. I tried and tried to convince everyone that the HBO show was amazing but it was out of fashion then.

Fast forward to the Borat movie...
