Oh, I know. I wasn't trying to be snarky with you or anything. :( I just don't see what the big deal is lately with those games. It's no different than hitting buttons on a controller. I hope it doesn't come out in arcades cause it'll make people look like giant tools.

It's a fun party game that you can at least look like less of a douche playing than, say, DDR, because the music isn't gay and you're not dancing around like a dumbass (unless you choose to, which I do)

edit: it's also easier on the fat kids

GH3 is a lot of fun, fun which happens to increase with some friends over and alcohol, gets might competive about 3 hours into the night. And tbh i dont even take notice of the graphics to busy playing the game and not fussing over something which only idiot's really care about. Graphics dont make the game.

The "Be Useless" lesson in the first video hits kinda close to home for me because no matter what game it is I'm always the guy with like -3 kills who runs around playing the game completely wrong and falling victim to snipers over and over again :<

Not on purpose, it's because I suck

GH3 is nothing compared to 2. the set list kinda sucks, but the guitar battles were a unique idea.
Halo 3 is just the other halos with new weapons. nothing to really shake a stick at.
Assassins creed is fun but repetitive. I mean, do i really have to climb 12 200 foot skyscrapers before i kill someone?
just wait for the new ninja gaiden. it will be the answer to your gaming prayers

Don't you mean the original Ninja Gaiden in 3D?

Because thats basically what the past five years of Ninja Gaiden games were. Rehashes.

Halo 3 throws a lot of gravy on top of the original formula. You can't improve the gameplay, but you can build bigger set pieces, add more weapons and vehicles, as well as do a lot more shit in the Forge. Granted, it is a lot of the same. But you can't improve upon it.

They should release an online game where you don't have to fucking grind or level up or spend huge amounts of your life on for it to be fun or worthwhile at all. Also not an FPS.

Guitar Woman
Jan 21st, 2008, 04:53 PM
Sunshine is running around gigantic multipath levels with varied and fun platforming and catchy music

Galaxy is taking a linear path from one tiny planetoid to the next with terrible camera control and not much variation in what you have to do

I have my reasons >:

Mabye I'm not far enough in Galaxy yet but it feels like not only have I seen everything the game has to offer, but that I've also done it 20 times already.

It really irritates me that no one makes non-fantasy RPGs, I mean STALKER was decent but I think some kind of modern warfare themed RPG would be something I could really get into. Kind of like BF2 but with proper character development/modification and a persistent world.

I don't understand why the developers chose Doki Doki Panic as a game to make in to Mario. I mean, they could have chosen a better platformer...

Because the creator of Mario made it. In fact he had more to do with it than the japanese SMB2.

Fuck SMB2. It's the only Mario game I haven't beaten to date and it's because I can't.

Grossenschwamm
Feb 12th, 2008, 12:24 AM
SMB2 isn't so bad. A hard game would definitely be Battle Toads. The difficulty scales so quickly in that game, I'm surprised that there are kids who beat it when it was new. I tried, but the only way I could was with a game genie. Now, I still can't beat it without cheating, but I can at least get to the level with the giant sawblades chasing you on my own.

Guitar Woman
Feb 12th, 2008, 11:08 AM
Battletoads is beatable without cheating if you know the right warps and have absolutely no life so you can spend as much time as possible memorizing everything you have to do in a level

Guitar Woman
Feb 12th, 2008, 11:11 AM
Battletoads Arcade is a whole different ballgame, though, and a better game.

I think I'm going to skip the Xbox and get a 360, but it's still a bit pricey for me, there aren't enough 360 games I want, I want to avoid the Red Ring of Death, and last I checked not all the Xbox games I wanted to play were backwards compatable (Stranger's Wrath)

It's a little rough around the edges but has solid gameplay. It sounds stupid but it's one of those games which you need to get good at before it's really fun.
It's kind of like Battlegrounds in that none of the weapons are especially deadly but if you master them it suddenly gets good.

But I'm not convinced you actually like shooters, GW. So you may as well just go back to playing Runescape and uninstall Steam entirely.

Guitar Woman

Everyone knows that the greatest video game ever created is: Home Improvement for the SNES.

Plot

The player guides Tim "The Toolman" Taylor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Taylor_%28fictional_character%29) in a quest to find some Binford power tools that have gone missing from the set of Tool Time (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tool_Time).

Gameplay

The game plays like many other action/platform games of the time that were based on popular television shows or movies (like Virgin's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virgin_Interactive_Entertainment) The Lion King (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lion_King_%28video_game%29), which was also released in 1994 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1994_in_video_gaming).)

The player's weapons include modified tools such as a nail gun, a blowtorch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blowtorch) (used as a flamethrower (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flamethrower)), and a chainsaw (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chainsaw) which inexplicably hurls energy waves.

These weapons are used to fight dinosaurs, acid-spewing mummies, robot sentries, and other enemies.

The game is broken down into 4 worlds of 4 levels, each world containing a boss level.

It is also worth noting that the game had no manual (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Instruction_manual_%28computer_and_video_games%29) ; its splash screen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Splash_screen) explained, “Real men don’t need instructions.”

I just found out about Brutal Legend coming out 4th quarter of 2008. A Roadie is transported to Heavy Metal land(so I guess Norse Mythology mixed with epic metal), wields a battle axe and guitar. Can control various npcs to attack(similiar to the darkness, I believe) Worth mentioning that Lemmy and Rob Halford are doing voices in it. Don't you find that games today, although really fun, aren't as easily picked up and played as older games are? Example, Co-op play: Contra VS Army Of Two. Anyone will be familiar with Contras concept and controls in about twenty seconds. AOT would require about 15-20 minutes to really get into it.

So it seems like every first party Nintendo release is just a little more mediocre than the last one, which I then appreciate a whole lot more than when I first announced it's shittyness.

Example: I hated Twilight Princess when I first got it and was angry with Nintnedo for churning out such a mediocre pile of doodie after hyping it up the ass as the second coming. Then I played Mario Galaxy. I have since changed my mind about Twilight Princess and think that it is a really good game!

This either means that I'm disappointed easily and that I have to eat shit to realize how good a plate of brussel sprouts can be, or that my standards are being lowered ever so tenderly with each shitty new release. I'm not sure where I'm going with this but I can only think it spells doom for the future of good videogames

or something :<

Don't get me wrong, either, there are still fucking fantastic games like No More Heroes and PVK2 coming out these days, it just seems like there aren't nearly as many as there used to be.

Also before Zomboid comes in and jumps down my throat let me say that I'm using Nintendo as an example because the only new console I own is a Wii. I've only played a handful of games for the PS3 and Xbox Circle, all of which have been crappy to mildy fun, but probably still not enough to get a good idea of the general state of videogames. If I did I have a feeling I'd be saying about the same thing as a general analysis of the medium and not just complaining about Nintendo's aging design talent.

I read an article on MSN news that Nintendo is letting real gamers down because their main target is kids and casual gamers, basically. My girlfriend likes playing the Wii but won't jam on the 360. She enjoys watching me play games on 360 because she likes the story. She followed me playing Gears Of War like it was a tv series. I only play the Wii when there's other people around.

Well this depends, really. Kids and casual gamers will make up a larger number of people than the hard core. However, kids and casuals won't buy nearly as many titles or hardware as the hard core gamers. A hard core gamer is more likely to buy an Elite or custom Halo 360 than a casual gamer is. I think Nintendo is in a good position because they really understand the market they're in, but their titles have to be aimed at that market. Personally, I laugh a lot more when playing the Wii so it's my favourite console with company. Alone, I would say it's only 50% as good.

Honest abe:

I think it's hard to say that Nintendo doesn't tap the hardcore market when it releases fanboy elitist shit like Super Smash Bros and Metroid Prime 3.

If you're talking about a sheer percentage of games that are rated M FOR MATURE, then, sure, I guess? Though I'd wager at least half of the "hardcore" franchises around these days are rated T.

Nintendo appeals more towards Nintendo fans with is barely-updated sequels (really, Zelda puzzles haven't advanced at all, Mario's still collecting stars, and the Pokemon games are all the same,) and now the more casual crowd. Obviously people outside of those groups play too, but in terms of focus, Nintendo's hell bent on their established franchises and casual gaming.

Those are the two biggest demographics in gaming, so I'd say Nintendo's fanbase represents the majority of gamers. I won't dare take a stab at guessing the ratio of the fanbases, but I'd say the majority definitely resides in Ninty's camp.

Also "hardcore gamer" is a such stupid term. It brings up images of fat, sweaty, hairy losers who go around all "Yea I'm a motherfucking hardcore gamer I totally game way harder than anyone else". Seriously now.

I'm not saying I just support Microsoft. I'm all for anybody that makes kick-ass games and Nintendo doesn't do that for me anymore. Microsoft Game Studios has been putting out a lot of cool stuff for me that I've really been getting into recently. And fuck that seniority bullshit. Whatever, so what if Microsoft wasn't the OG and it's a relatively young player. I'm not a really retro guy. I'm the generation that came after you. I grew up on the Playstation. But I also remember my Super Nintendo, I remember Mr. Do and Super Buster Bros. and Mario Kart and Star Fox and Super Mario World. I still love those games. But they are the past and I don't love them enough to care if they're all smashed together in some generic sport or fighting game. Yes, I like Mario Party 3. It holds memories for me. That game specifically, not any spinoffs or sequals, that game.

I've got no attachment to Metroid, though.

I don't think anybody represents true gaming right now. Microsoft's too young, Nintendo's forgotten what brought people to the table in the first place, and Sony? Well, they're lingering by a thread but still hanging on. I'll be interested to see what happens to them in the years to come. All we get now is mere glimpses of TRUE gaming. And I don't just mean the first and second party devs under console makers' wings, either. I'm talking fresh blood, third party developers. I think attention will shift to Indie Games (I hate that label.) Smaller, independent game developers given more money and more time.

That's not to say that there will only be independent developers in the future. If that was to be, then we'd be waiting forever for a game to be released and just grow impatient and lose interest. Not every game has to be a gem, but not every one has to purposely play down either.

Why can't people just look into a game that everyone can enjoy? Does it cost too much in money? Can one not hope to please that many?

Whatever. I'll just sit back and play my GTA IV and my No More Heroes and probably look back on these times fondly. In short, a nod to Microsoft, a "fuck you" to Nintendo, and a glance-over towards Sony.

Phoenix Gamma

You can't please everyone. You can go into the desert, find some stranded person, give them chocolate ice cream, and they'll tell you they don't like chocolate.

Also, it's not a "fuck you" to Nintendo if you're playing No More Heroes on their console. They have your munnies.

Also, the 360 needs some games that aren't shooters, racers, or Madden. Talk about appealing to a limited demographic.

So what - in your opinion - "brought people to the table in the first place"?

It would seem that that's the entire POINT of the Wii and DS.

PG - Can't disagree with much of what you're saying; Nintendo whores the hell out of its franchises -which appeal to the "hardcore" market - and somehow ends up branded as a kiddie game manufacturer. I damn well can. By "bring people to the table" I meant the new guys and stuff, of course. I also meant everybody else. Nintendo fans will buy Nintendo games, a given with anything. "Casual" gamers, and by that I mean not just the ones that play Peggle for hours, will buy anything that evidences a gimmick. What about the more discerning person than someone who will buy the colorful game that is not yet a Nintendo fan? I was this person a couple years ago.

I had a subscription to Game Informer, I looked at reviews, and I looked at gameplay videos and tried to decide which game to buy with which console. Albeit, I never had a Gamecube. I'm getting one in the near future. I would get a Wii, and I probably still will, but someone's giving it to me. I see some good games I want for it.

Regardless, if a million people stopped buying Mario Party 42, Nintendo would still be making money hand over fist. I don't give a flying fuck about Mario or Samus or Fox or Link anymore. WHERE'S THE NEW STUFF? Why rehash the same characters? It's nice to have a throwback every once in a while, but when your entire business is based on characters you've invented nigh on twenty years ago, well I just can't get behind you. Even if everyone else does.

Phoenix Gamma

I can't tell if you disagree with us or not.

Also, WiiSports, WiiFit, etc. is your new stuff. Enjoy playing videogames with your whole family (I know I am!)

And if I wanted to apply a technicality to your last statement, Fire Emblem doesn't recycle characters from 20 years ago, and neither does Advance Wars, even if the gameplay is similar. Also Custom Robo, Golden Sun, Mother, Pikmin, Elite Beat Agents, Excite Truck, Trace Memory, and Nintendogs, to name a few. Now toss in WiiSports, WiiFit, etc., etc. and compare it to Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, Metroid, and Pokemon, and keep in mind that sequels from Camp Nintendo usually come out at least 3 years a part, and you'll realize that they're more balanced.

To quote my favorite behemoth, Reggie, who was asked if Nintendo's mystery winter blockbuster was Zelda:

I just don't think Nintendo is the fucking be-all-end-all of video games that people say the are. But neither is Microsoft nor Sony. Fan-boys disgust me more than anything else, more than rapists.

My whole family does not want to play Wii Fit. They don't get it. EBA isn't getting a sequal, Nintendogs is shit, Mother isn't going to come to America any time soon. Custom Robo is okay, but I played it before when it was called Virtual-On. Great game. I like Pikmin a lot. After the first Golden Sun, I kinda got bored of the second. Fantastic game that really pushes the GBA, though. I like Professor Layton. Games like this, though, seemed to get pushed over to the side while everyone crowds around the newest iteration of something else. I need third party developers with good new intellectual properties. Dead Rising, for instance. Great game and I'd like to see another.

I don't know. I guess nothing ever seems to jump out at me anymore. I've become disinterested in games, but I've come back later this year.

I am really hooked on Army of 2 though. I haven't played a good two player game like that on a console since Doom Troopers. I've pretty much given up on videogames years ago since they stopped making rpgs that aren't mmo's.

I have that same feeling that Marty Mcfly gets in Back to the Future: 2, where he plays the western shooter arcade game in the future. Then some kids make fun of him because the game requires hands to play it.

Chojin
Apr 26th, 2008, 04:17 PM
Fathom - What does Ubisoft have to do with anything? They're a publisher. They weren't there when the game was being developed.

Also, you can say the exact same 'franchise rape' thing about ANY company's 1st-party titles. The reason Nintendo has so many of them is because they sell well. Nintendo also converts a lot of 3rd parties into 1st parties, so their "non-existent 3rd party support" exists partly because they buy successful 3rd parties. Are those 3rd parties no longer successful at that point? Microsoft and Sony try to do this too.

I'm also not saying that Nintendo is the be-all-end-all of video games, but I think they represent the direction the industry should be going if it doesn't want to continue losing customers year after year and eventually become irrelevant. Video games are about fun, and judging from the results you've seen so far with the Wii and DS, Nintendo is providing the bulk of that and not excluding everyone not in the MALE 18-25 demographic.

Also, you have the same idiot fanboys that drool over GTA 4, Madden 200X, and Halo 3 to blame for Smash Bros 9 and Mario Party 2023. That isn't a Nintendo problem. These people aren't "gamers" in the traditional sense, they're punk-ass kids who play maybe 3 games a year and rely on industry hype to tell them what everyone else will be playing. Nintendo traditionally doesn't hype games until they're already out, and even then they only do it to support their 1st party titles. Most 3rd parties - for whatever reason - won't spend the bread to market their Nintendo games to any successful degree. Microsoft and Sony will deign to pick up a large part of the marketing tab, and this is probably Nintendo's biggest error.

As for game informer, I suggest you read any other magazine if you'd like some actual Nintendo coverage. I've never seen a publication not formally associated with a brand be so unabashedly biased in my life.

I just don't think Nintendo is the fucking be-all-end-all of video games that people say the are. But neither is Microsoft nor Sony. Fan-boys disgust me more than anything else, more than rapists.

Delicious hyperbole, or whacked out priorities?

My whole family does not want to play Wii Fit. Great. That's relevant to my point (that Nintendo has other games besides the popular ones.)

I like Professor Layton.I never said they were good or anything. I said they're not whored out franchises. Oi vey. As a side note, Custom Robo and Virtual-On are quite different. That's like comparing a hamburger with a hot dog; sure they're both processes meat between bread, but they're different. Also, Professor Layton is 3rd Party.

I'm telling you, WiiWare can bring me back.So you praise a copycat XBLA? I mean, I suck Nintycock, but even I know it's probably going to pale in comparison to what's already been offered for quite some time. Putting faith in WiiWare to be some sort of messiah is like putting faith in SEGA to make a good Sonic game. There might be a tiny glimmer of hope, but don't count on it. (inb4 Sonic debate).

By the by, No More Heroes is published by Ubisoft.By the way, what does that have to do with Nintendo franchises?

Also, Chojin hit the nail on the head about everything. Everyone franchise-rapes (Capcom, MOTHERFUCKING EA, Rockstar, SEGA, SquareEnix, etc.) At Nintendo's broadening the demographic so that not all gamers are associated with the same trash we see running their mouths on XBox Live. My argument is about games, not consoles. That's what I was getting at with the fact that it was published by Ubisoft.

I still don't understand what you're getting at, here.

What gets me upset about the industry is ironically the same thing (in theory) that 360 and PS3 fanboys are upset about - a new generation of non-gamers swooping in and making the next few years of games all about THEM. For me, that already happened years ago - it was the Mortal Kombat generation that weren't (or aren't) old enough to play mature games and ever since then, that's all they'll play. For them, it's the MINIGAME FAGS who seek to rid the planet of the good ol' fashioned bloodshed this industry has been built on for as long as they can remember (1992). And I wonder, do they have any idea where this industry started? Because infinite play games like Donkey Kong and Pac-Man reek of MINIGAME to me.

And I'll always respect the company more that's willing to put out a virtual boy or two just to do something different.

Anywho, back on topic, if you're going to blame anyone for videogame rehashes (not you specifically, but everyone in general), blame the fans. We got good stuff, then different stuff that was still good. Fan(boy)s wanted more of the old stuff, and companies scrambled to appease them (best example being Square and their million-bajillion-FF7-Sequel-Extravaganzmatazz). Then fans said "what the shit? We want original stuff too!"

Now companies are either saying "goddamnit. Fine, we'll shift gears again." or "fuck you we already started production on 5 different Final Fantasy XIIIs." I've noticed that Capcom is mixing things up a little here and there, as well as a few other companies. Then you've got the bands of disgruntled developers leaving one company to start another (Treasure, Mistwalker).

Plus, certain franchises carry more credibility than others. If you were forced to chose between a new Mario and a new Ty the Tasmanian Tiger, most people would probably go for Mario. It's only natural for people to stick with what they're more comfortable with (which makes entering the console race pretty hard too. I was surprised to see the XBox stick around.)

Moral of the story: when a company puts out a game it hasn't whored out for ages, you should buy it and encourage them to make more different shit, then when the company thinks they can cash in on a sequel, pass on it. Probably a bad mindset to think in, but it gets the point across.

(Also, do we REALLY need another Bioshock? Seriously, 100+ people work on games now and none of them can pitch anything better than "sequel to the best selling game of last year"? Oi Vey.)

Hey, Bionic Commando was a great game and I was waiting for a fly-ass sequal. I loved the one for the GBC. The thing, with me at least, is that Nintendo seems to put more attention on their sequals and spinoffs as opposed to new shit. That seems to work for them, so what the hey. Capcom has put a lot of spotlight on their new games, while still seemingly releasing a new Mega Man game every month.

That's my opinion, that's how I feel, and it's neither right nor wrong.

Even though I'm right. :/

Phoenix Gamma

Oh no, I never said it was bad. I loved it at lot (even though I wish it had jumping, but that's nothing to cry over.)

I just think that whether or not you count it in the same category as some of their other franchises (All 70 Mega Man series, Street Fighter II Turbo Mega Ultra Edition 2: Electric Boogaloo, etc.) is kinda up for debate. I could see them really milking it dry, but for the sake of preserving the integrity of the game, I hope they give it a break after the new games come out. Just let them stand as great nods to a great game.

And I must say, the remake looks fucking sick. I'm not too sure about the 'Next-Gen' version, but the second the classic music started up, I bought into it.

the guy you have to fight at the end of the Dead Sea in Chrono Cross is the most unfair shit I've ever seen in a game

I really like this game, too, but now I can't go any further :<

10KVG - I don't think anyone ever did.

Got a new used genesis mk.1 from POWER GAMER II downtown for about $26. This one works! Ebay guy wants the 32x back if I'm to get a fulll refund, hopefully he'll accept giving me a partial refund of $26 instead.

I'm really stuck on this adventure game for the 3DO i've been playing between games of mario kart :<

Also, I only have one game for my Sega CD and I can already tell that it's the worst system between it, the CD-i, and the 3DO.

I've run most of the wires along the back of those planks. Also, without the flash on a camera you can't really see all those wires toward the back of the racks.

I also need a power base converter for my tower of babil:

You must take good care of your consoles, or not have more than three.

NES, SNES, N64, GCN, PS2, and Wii. The only ones hooked up regularly are the PS2 and Wii, and the Wii is usually on a separate TV because I love playing Brawl on my HDTV with Surround Sound.

So yea, I never have much of a mess going on.

Us Americans sure are fat.

Anywho, the game wasn't meant for 10 year olds (lol casual gaming) so it's not accurate. I'm willing to wager she IS fat, though. Plus, the father said she was "solidly built". Totally a nice way of saying 'fat', or at least "husky".

the bmi is such a broken way to judge a person's fitness, if it had like something to actually detect a person's fat percentage apart from just weight it would be way better

Phoenix Gamma
May 16th, 2008, 07:36 PM
You shouldn't be relying on the Wii to tell you how fat you are in the first place.

Chojin
May 17th, 2008, 02:56 AM
Well if you consider that BMI is only wrong if you're dealing with muscular people, and then think about Wii Fit's target market, it makes a lot more sense.

Pentegarn
May 17th, 2008, 09:25 AM
