Watching my roomie play TF2 last night. I don't understand the physics behind the backburner ability. It hurts more to be set on fire from behind....seriously?

Yeah I mean shooting a rocket at your feet would clearly propel you gracefully though the air, but fire being more damaging to your back than your front - ridiculous!

No, 10K, I only play chess when I have a chance of winning. I am actually pretty rubbish. Hence me getting upset that the computer beats me on 'novice' and why my little brother wont play me anymore.

The games I play online at the moment are Red Alert 3, Dawn of War 2 and Day of Defeat.

What a god damn coincidence. I was just playing battle chess earlier. I must admit my favorite part is their sluggish movement, especially when you move your knights and everyone has to make way for their fat sloth asses and move back to their spaces.

The Classless Update might be my favorite one yet.

Scouts die in one second anyway, and without double jump they're close to useless. So, basically, I have the same chance of survival with better mobility and I can stun people.

The new maps and defeat animations are also pretty classy.

Loving this update and agreed with GW - I'm really not feeling any weaker with 30 less HP, and it feels like my scattergun is stronger for some reason. I also love that firing the ball from the Sandman is a right-click now, I'm hitting peeps way more consistently with it now and can fire through teammates.

I only know that I'm going to hack the ever-living shit out of it.

:rock

Also, I just heard that the downloadable PSP games (the UMD games put on PSN) are going to be the same price as the discs. Kinda bullshit, because you're not paying for a manufactured disc, game case, instruction booklet, etc. I know, I just run games anyways (though some new games are requiring and update even if you pirate it), but shit like that isn't going to convince me to start paying.

Persona, for instance, comes with a soundtrack if you buy it on UMD, but not if you buy it online (they're not going to send you MP3s or something with it). Both the same price. The fact that the PSPGo is the original price ($250) while adding nothing of particular interest, just makes it sting even more.

Fathom Zero
Sep 5th, 2009, 12:09 AM
Yeah yeah yeah, but sometimes the advantage of not carrying around UMDs is worth it. And I can't exactly get out to the Gamestop from where I am. It's about three miles away, which isn't far, but I don't wanna spend an afternoon just to pick up a game. Maybe if I had a bike.

Besides, the PSP game cases are awful-shaped.

The scenes of post-apocalyptic scenes of carnage play out not in some fictional town in eastern Europe, but in Washington D.C. itself.

OH NOOOSSSS!

The game’s trailer, which debuted to a national audience tuned into Sunday night’s Steelers-Chargers NFL game, has racked up close to 200,000 views since its posting on YouTube Sunday, and reports have it that more than a million have pre-ordered the game.

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories is breaking my heart. It isn't a respectful remodeling like Resident Evil. It's a Hollywood style re-imagining where they've completely missed the point. Maybe I shouldn't assume so much from just watching the trailer, but that trailer didn't make me feel anything at all. No hype or anticipation, not even the smallest morsel of hope. The Silent Hill I knew really is gone forever.

Dimnos
Nov 4th, 2009, 10:06 AM
A question just to hear what everyone thinks...

In your opinion what was the last GOOD Silent Hill game? Bonus if you care to elaborate and say why you thought it was good and/or how the next one dropped the ball.

Personally I think SH2 was the last good one. I just didnt like 3 at all and I pretty much didnt play any more after that. I did pick up The Room or whatever and got a little into it but never finished it.

Dr. Boogie
Nov 4th, 2009, 04:49 PM
SH2 was definitely the best, but I still felt that 3 was a good addition to the series.

4 was pretty much a departure, what with them giving you an actual health bar and a charge meter for your attacks.

SIlEnT HILL

Origins was the last one I liked. You have to ignore certain bits though, like most of the end game. This is one problem I have with western atempts at the series. They take the Silent Hill concept of hell and make it way too literal. Origins ends with you fighting an actual biblical demon. Another problem with Origins, the psychological elements are not very subtle. Most things are spelled out for you so you won't spend much time spinning outrageous theories (Henry's not a real person!). My reasons for liking the game I'm not able to enumerate as easily. I guess I like it because it feels like a Silent Hill and that's good enough for me.

Guitar Woman
Nov 16th, 2009, 01:43 AM
You know, if Shattered Memories fails as a Silent Hill, it could probably still be a good horror game. Even if high-minded things like decent pacing and the building of tension through silence and Silent Hill's subtle psychological elements and symbolism and all that shit miss Climax completely, unkillable stalker characters have always terrified me, and I thought just being able to murder everything in all the Silent Hills made the games significantly less scary. So I support the Clock Tower approach completely. It could be that which ends up saving Shattered Memories from absolute shittiness.

More of a little thing, too, but I think it looks really good, and I'm glad people other than Nintendo themselves are finally trying to make Wii games that don't look like something a Dreamcast threw up.

King Hadas
Nov 16th, 2009, 02:13 AM
The chase scenes from the trailer look like they boil down to Quick Time Events. :x

Maybe what's upsetting me is that the trailer is a total plagiarism of every other trailer I've ever seen for a "psychological horror". Maybe the game is actually gonna be great! They got the aesthetics all wrong though. And why'd they redesign Dahlia as a trashy lady? Is that to make the game more modern?

Guitar Woman
Nov 16th, 2009, 02:15 AM
According to the dev team the choices you make in the game affect the appearance of the characters and the monsters and shit, so I'm assuming Harry being a slut turned Dahlia so or something.

Not sure why she's 30 years younger than in the original, though.

The whole gist of what Climax is trying to do is basically apply the representation of Silent Hill from the second game, i.e. a personalized hell/purgatory for bastards, but instead of poor old James Sunderland or Harry Mason the town's punishing, it's you. So they give you a bunch of psychological tests and shit at the beginning to try and find out what kind of person you are, and of course it's also reflected by gameplay descisions, and the game is supposedly tailored from this to scare and disturb you as much as possible. Considering the original game focused pretty heavily on the things Alessa hated or was afraid of, this is a gigantic change of aesthetic.

Why they thought a bunch of ice and shit would be more iconic than the usual rusty grating and dirty hospital sheets is beyond me, though. It also kind of scares me how much the trailers for this game take after Alone in the Dark, especially the real-time landscape morphing.

I'll still buy it, though. 3 years ago I might have not bothered with a game I wasn't 100% about, but release starvation hasn't made me picky, especially when it comes to Wii games.

King Hadas
Nov 16th, 2009, 03:11 AM
I respect they're trying something new with the whole psychological tests and the flashlight. Recently I've realized that I love Silent Hill 4 because they tried a lot of new things. Most of them didn't work but man, almost. The titular room was a stroke of genius, I wish they'd invested more time into that part of the game.

especially the real-time landscape morphing.
This sort of thing is what makes me feel they missed the point. How long does it take to build that sort of game mechanic? And yet it has no effect on the atmosphere, if anything it kills the mood. They probably shouldn't be showing the transition in the first place, it's bad for ambiguity.

I could bitch and moan until the cows came home but regardless of what I say I'll definitely end up playing this game eventually. Even if I'd known Homecoming was going to turn out the way it did I'd still of played it because I'd need to see it for myself.

The 360/PS3 version is a port of the original with nicer graphics and probably Project Natal support and whatever motion crap the PS3's got. There's currently no publisher for the game, though, since Ubisoft dropped it. :\

I think the appeal to Earthbound is how gamey it is, and how it plays off of that. I mean, Itoi takes advantage of the medium and your expectations (ex: "you-know-who prayed", the final final ending of Mother 3).

It's definitely got charm to spare, but I think some of the silly gameplay moments is what makes it special. I'd still watch it, though.

As much as it takes up a large space in my heart Suikoden II has such an annoying glitch. If you name your hero in Suikoden I you can import your save data and get him as a character in Suikoden II with his name you chose. Except if you save Gremio and get all 108 stars of Destiny in Suikoden I and import the save data into S II an annoying glitch happens.

In S I the Hero's last name is McDohl regardless of what you choose. I always named my hero Donovan(I played a lot of Darkstalkers around that time). S II's glitch was that it took the first letter of your chosen name and substituted the rest of McDohl.

So in SII his name was DcDohl....DickDole :(

My friend had named his hero Kenshin so when he played through it got renamed to KcDohl,,,,KickDole.... :(

I want someone to make a Stealth Survival Horror game wherin you stay alive in hostile, terrifying environments by sneaking around, surprise-killing monsters, creating diversions, etc.

Basically, the Shalebridge Cradle extended for 8 hours. All 3 Thief games have some pretty fantastic scary moments/levels, and I don't see why something like that wouldn't work as the formula for a full game.

I also think the last time I was too scared to finish playing a level in one sitting was, like, Ocarina of Time. I tip my hat to Ion Storm.

Mar 9th, 2010, 01:55 PM
Yeah, you should, it's probably the best series ever.

I hope Thief 4 has a dynamic awareness level for guards where they don't just forget that they saw you if you get caught but then run away and hide again. They could also get increasingly suspicious the more noise you make, and at some point realize that the thing hurling pots and wine bottles around in the other room isn't just a large, obnoxious rat. This is one reason I like playing the Spy in TF2 so much; if you do enough damage, people get paranoid, and start to realize and look out for unseen threats. In turn, that makes it about twice as satisfying when you outwit them anyway and commit rape upon the enemy ranks. It's really the ultimate stealth game. Or would be if Valve would fix backstab detection, goddamnit

One thing I liked in Thief 3 was that unarmed NPCs would run and find a guard to clean your clock if they saw you, wheras in the other games they'd pretty much run through the mansion waving their arms and hollering while the sentries stood around staring at walls and muttering about how much they hate stale bread.

Suddenly, Kirby, Donkey Kong Country, Golden Sun, Kid Icarus, 3DS, and every 3rd party under the sun comes in and makes Nintendo's press event fucking awesome.

Awesome conference. Sony played it safe with interesting (but not totally exciting, save for Twisted Metal) sequels and their remote, but their show was still pretty solid. Microsoft's was just a total joke though. EA had a pretty good show this year, but the less said about Ubisoft, the better. But Nintendo just showed games, and their new tech looks really good. They brought back a lot of franchises that kinda disappeared (Kirby hasn't seen a proper platformer on consoles since N64, DKC died back on the SNES, Golden Sun was presumed to be forgotten, and Kid Icarus as a launch title for the 3DS is really neat) and the support for the new handheld is really impressive (MGS? Resident Evil? Shin Megami Tensei?)

It's about time Nintendo had a strong showing for E3. And I'll even give them the benefit of the doubt for Zelda (unless hands-on reports from blogs prove otherwise).

Sony: B+

By the way, the 3DS looks like garbage, design-wise. The thing's gonna be a chintzy piece of plastic like the smaller DS and I saw the case flex a lot while people were handling it. Ugh.You already said that in the other thread. Besides, I have three reasons to believe the quality of the casing won't be a concern:

1) It'll be made out of fucking Nintendium. The Game Boy could survive a Gulf War bombing, and I've owned every iteration of the DS, and that thing is durable as shit, unlike the PSP, which I have to coddle like an infant. Nintendo makes durable stuff. Also with noting is that the system is still a year away, and this might not be final. The DS had a pretty derpy design before it's original launch.

2) I haven't heard any complaints about the case's durability on news sites.

3) I haven't seen any evidence of said flexing. Link plz.

Plus, the casing isn't my biggest concern. Price is. They threw in everything but the kitchen sink; accelerometer, gyrosensor, pretty graphics, 3D display, touch screen, improved WiFi, apparently some internal storage, and technically three cameras (two in the front for 3d photos, one inside for your face). I can't see myself paying more than $200 for this, but it seems like a pricey piece of hardware, as opposed to Nintendo's usual attempts to make things affordable for your mom.

Fathom Zero

You already said that in the other thread.

I thought it would be better here because I knew I'd take a lot of shit for it.

Whatever. Sure, it'll last probably. But if it's the same shitty polymer and finish they used to make the 2nd generation of DS, it'll be a fingerprint and scratch magnet. Which is not cool for a handheld.

2) I haven't heard any complaints about the case's durability on news sites.

Like I give a fuck what the news sites say. I won't use a "Nintendo bias OMG" defense here, either. I'll wait until review units go out before I really make a decision.

As an aside though, they said it was almost too easy to slide the 3D switch, which reminds me a lot of the Gameboy contrast switch where it could slide around in your pocket when you weren't playing it and make you think you've gone blind when you turn the thing back on.

3) I haven't seen any evidence of said flexing. Link plz.
I don't really care enough about the thing to make an argument against it. So I don't feel like giving evidence to support. What I see in photos and videos is flexing and imminent flexing, in my hands at least.

I have more reason to believe that a lot of people will be disappointed in the 3ds due to the working viewing area than the design. It seems that it only has a small bubble that you can view the 3d-ness in before it either hurts your eyes and makes them cross-eyed, or gets really blurry. I can see people suing because their kid's vision went bad due to children these days being retarded and keeping playing it even though it's fucking up their eyes.

I am. I'm just not providing sound evidence.

Your turn.

"Nintendo has made nothing but super sturdy plastic casing for all of the products they've produced in the 20+ years that they've been around, and the 3DS isn't out for another year so the casing is subject to change like the original DS did, plus there have been no reports of poor case builds from any news site" seemed like a pretty solid argument to me :V

'Tis good. And like I said, if it's a pre-production model, no worries. I'd like to have it matte like the DSi, but that may be too much to hope for. The DSi rules.

So Shadows of the Empire for the N64 looks absolutely identical to Morrowind's unmodded graphics

When I said Morrowind was like a beta of a game from 1996, I didn't realize I wasn't exaggerating. The difference is that Shadows isn't nearly as shit.

Is there not an all-encompassing e3 thread?

This is hilarious: http://www.dorkly.com/video/1848/e3-dance-central-demo

I dunno, I think that game could teach me some things. I can't dance worth a shit and although I don't actively go to dance clubs, after a bit of practice on there, I could see myself going and making a dick out of myself on a dance floor by pretty much copying the moves I learned on a game.

I got Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter on Steam because it's gotten to the point where it's cheaper to get it and the first episode again as part of a package deal. The only catch is that they don't let you have an extra license if you get an extra copy of a game in a package deal unless it's one of their special packages.

So fuck you, Steam.

Yeah, it's a bummer. It's only when they explicitly state it.

Kinda fucked up.

So far, just twice. The rest of it is just potential ways things could go wrong with digital downloads.

I was disappointed, but it was still cheaper to buy it that way than individually.

I'm just still bitter about the 2 week delay in patches for COD : W@W. It made the game useless till they put out the patch.

Question: We have a medium where we can make ANYTHING, with tech that's constantly improving. Near limitless possibilities. Anything your imagination can come up with, you can make.

So why the fuck are so many people spending time on photorealism? The real world sucks. >:

Plus their graphics engines always get outrealism'd before the end of the year anyways.
