I think we've attempted this thread like 9 times in the past but hey

I picked up Fatal Frame II the other day (for 40 bucks :suicide ) and I've been playing the sh*t out of that ;( I just got to the final chapter. I'm also about halfway through System Shock II and I'm also kind of off-and-on playing God of War.

If you can, get the original. I was the only one renting it at blockbuster, week after week; they felt sorry for me and just let me have it, giant box, flawless cartridge, and game manual (with scratch & sniff cards intact). I still read that thing when I take a dump.

There are so many moments in that game that I consider the most frustrating gaming moments of all time (not including the entirety of Out of this World), but it doesn't keep it from being the greatest game of all time.

I'm not so much as playing but drooling over MGS4 screenshots, and hating the PS3 fanboys who're getting thrown their bone.

Emu, give MGS3: Snake Eater a shot. I wasn't such a big fan of the previous installments (read: Raiden), but this one blew my mind. From the James Bond-esque intro, the Cold War setting, the goofy-but-not-too-goofy villains, the mechanics (blow up a bunker, soldiers get hungry ---> feed them poisonous frogs, bam, dead) and the sheer cinematic goodness, this game will make you blow your load. I know I did. It was my first MGS title. I'm replaying it now on the hardest difficulty, trying to find all the extras and avoid ever being seen or making a lethal shot.

Yeah, this game is only second in my heart to Mischief Makers.

Although I would love to have an actual SNES cartridge with all the scratch n sniff crap and the giant box it comes in, I don't see myself getting it any time soon because 1) My SNES is lacking controllers and a power cord which I can't find anywhere and don't want to pester my dad to get me off of eBay right now, and 2) the Earthbound cart alone is like 50 fucking dollars, so I'm sure all the other stuff must make the price jump close to a hundred bucks, which is ridiculous.

Yes, it's a carbon copy of MGS1 with better graphics and MGS2's gameplay. Also, they re-did all the cutscenes to include a ridiculous amount of John Woo stunts, and they re-voiced the entire script. You can't really judge it by today's standards. Considering the alternatives when it was released it was really good. The single player combined good action, graphics and set pieces in a way which had scarcely been seen before in a game while the multiplayer went to be the base for a slew of fantastic games in their own right. Counter Strike 1.6 is still one of the most popular shooters out there, not to mention DoD, TFC, TS, and NS.

Besides it can't be that bad if you actually finished it. Most people stop playing if they don't enjoy a game.

Ok, I have to be FAIR and say that I like the general mythos and setting of the original Half Life, and the beef I have is with the horrible engine the game runs on. Gordon moves like a cocaine addict coated with grease, and the level of gravity is fucking ridiculous for a game with so much platforming.

Which is why I am excited for that Black Mesa remake that's putting the whole thing into the Source engine, and unlike that other half-assed attempt it's actually gonna improve the graphics and change the puzzles so they work with the engine. BUT UNTIL THEN HALF LIFE 1 CAN SUCK A DICK OK

I find that any game that was only 'good for its time' really wasn't.

...except when talking about the game's technology, imo.

GW seems to only really dislike the game's engine which was good for it's time.

I personally think all of HL was and is good... Except for the Xen level which was shit.

In stuff like Mario which is still considered to be as good now as its ever been, it didn't matter what the game looked like because it was ridiculously simple and graphics really add very little to the experience.

First person shooters, on the other hand, do gain a lot from improvements in graphics, physics and the gameplay mechanics facilitated by these upgrades.
The physics puzzles and extended scripted character interaction sequences of HL2 couldn't have been done in the original half-life and as such I don't think it's fair to judge HL1 by the standard of today, in which these things are common place.

That said the game did go a long way to make up for it's technical limitations with a decent storyline and some really good action sequences.

Either way, I'm starting to sound like a HL fanboy so I'll stop now.

Chojin
Oct 19th, 2007, 02:16 PM
HL was incredibly boring and remains incredibly boring to this day. NO ONE played HL deathmatches online, just Counter-Strike.

Whereas Quake 1, which came out earlier, is still good. Max Payne 1 and 2 are still great. Marathon 1 and 2 are still good (though with those games is where you can argue that the engine is what turns people off).

Guitar Woman
Oct 20th, 2007, 05:48 AM
As much as I don't like Half Life, I have to admit that I think Opposing Force is motherfucking fantastic. It totally makes up for the lame engine by having way less platforming and way cooler weapons/environments/enemies/characters/dialogue/everything than the original game. The fact that it was mostly developed by Gearbox rather than Valve might have had something to do with this, but that's just speculation on my part!

Guitar Woman
Oct 20th, 2007, 07:21 AM
Also, I just downloaded Quake with a bunch of super high-res graphics enhancements, and it is completely fantastic. Although my PC's shitty graphics card is coming in to play here more than I'm comfortable with, because I can't run the game smoothly on any resolution larger than 640x480, and even then it gets choppy when explosions come into play. Not to contest your other points, but you really only need lots of open space for games like wii sports that require big exaggerated movements. I know that mini-game collections make up half of the console's library, but I have the feeling you won't be into those anyway. Really the only space requirement for most games is that you be at least 3 feet from the screen.

We got Zack & Wiki for Wii today.

The best way to describe it is point-and-click SCUMM-style puzzle adventuring, without any of the connecting scenes (there's no walking to each area and no backtracking, it has distinct levels which you can generally see all-at-once and the puzzles are self-contained).

I still prefer the traditional SCUMM format, but it's an interesting take on the genre and still a very solid game (and a lot more morbid than I was expecting, too - you can die in more ways that you could in Leisure Suit Larry).

It's gettings scores of 85-95 from all the publications that have reviewed it so far - check it out.

Emu
Oct 28th, 2007, 05:23 PM
I think it's mostly just the Gamecube controller giving me trouble. Every time I shift to FPV the screen twitches because my Z button is a hunk of shit and won't stay down. And the GC controller isn't pressure sensitive (or if it is it isn't very good at it), so when I lift my weapon I can't put it back down without firing a shot. This is very bad when I don't have a suppressor.

Also, I wonder which portion of the Genome Soldiers' DNA makes them all sound like Robin from Teen Titans.

Guitar Woman
Oct 28th, 2007, 05:27 PM
I think if you want to put your weapon away quietly you have to hold the Y button and let go of the A button. This also stops you from firing like a maniac when you're using the famas.

Also, do you only have one controller?

Guitar Woman
Dec 3rd, 2007, 09:54 PM
FPS RPGs in general have never done anything for me. They're all decent games marred by shitty interfaces that add nothing to the overall experience and just make it incredibly boring. I did start playing Thief again, which is an innovative first person game done right to the million billionth degree. If Deus Ex's sneaking mechanic were slightly faster, I could just play it like I play Thief, but since you move at .0000000000000000006 miles per hour when holding down the shift key creeping up on people and disposing of them stealthily is impossible. And since that's what the game seems to want me to do because of the way it rapes me to little tiny pieces every time I try isolating guards and just shooting them, that is unacceptable.

Also, I had no problem connecting to the network and setting up a game and chatting with the other guy, but he couldn't figure out how to join my game and if there is an invite feature I didn't know where it was. Which is weird, because I remember Infinity being way easy to use online. He could have just been an idiot, I don't know.

Whenever I've rented or bought the SNES game, there were already save files, so I had no idea until now that you actually had to unlock it :\

I'm playing Rocket Knight Adventures.

The Playstation version just kills the feel of the game for me. The anime sequences are neat, but the loading times srsly detract from the fast-paced battles. :<

In other news, I got Persona 3 and I'm actually really enjoying it. I thought I would hate it because I have a poor opinion of Atlus gameplay quality, but this one is actually really easy to get into because it goes back to the simple Attack, Magic, Item style that everyone else is scurrying away from. The voice acting ranges from decent to superb and the animated sequences are copious and well-made. And seeing the kids shoot themselves in the head to cast a spell never stops being funny. Ever.

Is it worth getting? I like Atlus' games and this looked fun.

Oh, fuck yes. Don't pass it up if you can find it for $50 or less. It's only been out since August and it's already getting ridiculously rare. I was fortunate in that my local Gamestop had the thing stuck on an out-of-the-way shelf.

The school sim parts are fun and important without being invasive or breaking up the storyline pointlessly, and they allow for a lot of leeway with your schedule so you can manage your daily schedule without having to think about it too hard. Plus, everything you do during the day has a powerful impact on the dungeon crawling portion.

For example, you have to build social links with your classmates and friends, and when you do so, you can net yourself several thousands of extra XP for your Personae when you create new ones. You're also given the option to completely blow off your friends if you wanna be a dick.

During battle you can only directly control the main character, and while this seems a little queer at first, it actually keeps the pace of battle exciting, especially because your teammates are actually fucking intelligent. This game has some of the smartest AI I've seen in an RPG. The only bad thing is that they tend not to use status-healing items. But it's tolerable.

And best of all is the Rush button that puts your characters on auto-attack and moves through the battle at fast-forward if you're fighting weak/insignificant enemies. Or, you can just set your teammates to go beat the shit out of them without ever actually entering battle, and you still receive XP and such.

And all the dungeons are randomized every time you enter, Diablo II style.

The only negatives about this game is that the music tends to loop incessantly. It's good music, but it gives me a headache after a while.

Fuck, I got a DS Lite a few days ago (Got it from my nephew because he wanted to sell it, so I bought him 80 dollars worth of games to compensate for it.), and I couldn't be happier, so what am I playing?

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow - more like Castlevania: Symphony of the Dawn but it's still a great game. Real challenging and the whole "draw a seal or the boss won't die" is awesome.

Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass - Haven't got far in it, but I do like it.

Call of Cthulu: Dark Corners of the Earth - I finally killed myself!! :suicide

Final Fantasy 6 Advance - Do I need to explain?

Good because my PS2 is presently in some box ("A cardboard box?") and there's no TV close to an internet connection here.

I just got back from playing some Assassin's Creed, among other, mediocre things (Call of Duty 4, Guitar Hero, Rock Band, etc.).

I only got as far as Damascus, but part of that was because I spent most of my time dicking around on roofs and randomly high-profile assassinating people, yelling BATTLE CRIES out loud as I did it.

It was fun :<

The social stealth thing seems a little broken, though, because after I stop doing something the general population considered deplorable, people noticed me wherever I went and even if I was using the blend button the whole time. Nothing seemed to make them forget I was being a dick, but the guards don't attack you until you reach a higher level of noticability so whatever.

Other times it worked too well, to the point of being able to stealth assassinate someone and then keep my cover by standing over them in my serene scholar pose.

And and and I also played Portal finally!

I went to about Test Chamber 15 before I got the urge to go do something else, but it was a lot of fun. I also played HL2 Episode 1 and spent the better part of an hour flinging Combine soldiers around in the Citidel with the super gravity gun.

I'm going through an old games stage, mainly RPGS... Been playing Final Fantasy VIII then quit it at the 4th disc because I got bored of it, currently in the middle of IX and will go onto VII afterwards... At the end of Chrono Trigger right now and I was playing MGS before all the rpgs and that.
