Okay, so Binary Domain and Syndicate.

First off, I didn´t really like the BD-Demo all that much but the full game is WAY better. Both Demolevels are from the first third of the game when your Rifle isn´t all that good. Later on, Dan´s primary weapon becomes an enjoyable piece of destruction equipment :)
But it´s the story and the mood that make this game better than average. The whole "when does artificial life become "life", what if you´re a robot but you don´t know"-thing has always interested me and that´s basically all the game´s about. I´m not through it yet, should be soon though.
So far, around 10 hours of excellent entertainment.

Syndicate on the other hand, I only got because of the coop-mode but turns out, the Campaign has an extremely well-set mood to it, the dystopian and hostile feel to it is pretty great :)
Can´t say much about the coop yet, since I´ve only played the western europe-map from the demo with other people. I like it so far :)

Just platinumed Rayman Origins. That game went from mediocre to fantastic to mediocre real fast. The last level went overboard with the trial and error shit, but everything in the middle, from the levels to the music were phenomenal. Pretty as fuck though. Also the Vita version has the backstory on Rayman and Globox covered in two really funny murals. I liked that someone on the staff stopped and said "what if Rayman used to be bald and Globox used to be red?" just for the sake of fucking around with the canon.

Halfway through Last Story on the Wii. Good game, if a little standart in its systems but still fun. Most characters are just really sad...not Emo or anything, plain sad, makes you want to give them a hug :D

Also SSX, yeah I can´t play that game longer than 2 hours without getting annoyed somehow.

Started Mass Effect (the first one) for the 4th time. I'm maybe two hours into it. What the fuck is it with this game? I hate it. It's just layers of "game-polish" that make everything seem sterile as a cancer ward, the inventory is just the worst and the terrible combat system sucks everything that seems even remotely interesting right off. I really want to like this game, but I just don't get it. I also hated Dragon Age and Baldur's Gate, so maybe Bioware just doesn't work for me.

YES. Get Psychonauts. I'm really cynical nowadays when it comes to games and it's really hard for me to get excited about anything. Psychonauts was like a breath of fresh air and reminded me why I started playing videogames to begin with. Just don't read anything about it beforehand. I bought GTA4 + Episodes on Steam, and I wish someone had told me what a fucking awful idea this was beforehand.

First of all, GTA4 weighs in at about 16 gigabytes. I had to download that with a 60kbs/second connection. If you want to also install Episodes from Liberty City, that's 16 more gigabytes. Surely there should be some sort of system where if you install GTA4 first, you should get the episodes for substantially less disc space, right? It's the same goddamn engine; the way it is now you're just installing the fucking game twice.

Second of all, despite the fact that I got it on Steam, I have to register on Games for Windows Live if I want to save my progress, at all. This should have been fucking advertised somewhere because it is completely fucking retarded. I didn't get Steam so I could take it up the butt from Microsoft's shitty fucking shit; right now it's installing the second of about 500000000 updates and says "hey, you know how you just played a really long and boring and tedious GTA intro mission, one of the inevitable hardships we must endure to enjoy an otherwise excellent game? WELL GET READY TO DO IT AGAIN BECAUSE WE'RE RE-STARTING YOUR COMPUTER! HA HA HA." It also had the cheek to mock me further by suggesting I save my game and quit so that the update could complete, apparently not realizing that I can't save my fucking game until the update is complete.

I should've just bought a PS3, fuck this shit.

Mad Melvin
Mar 4th, 2012, 04:02 PM
Yeah, GTA4 is pretty shitty on a PC. After I installed all the software I don't want and all the patches and shit, the game ran fine for two minutes and then the framerate dropped to 10fps for no reason. My computer is pretty decent, so it wasn't a hardware problem. I fiddled around with the in-game settings, tried all the official and unofficial fixes, but I just couldn't get the fucking thing to work properly. So I ended up buying the xbox version for 20 bucks, which i've should've done in the first place.

Bought Flatout Ultimate Carnage at a Goodwill for 3 bucks. Pretty fun. A lot of destructible pieces on the track that can actually slow you down or just get in the way if you're using the first person camera. They also remain on the track and still affect you the entire race. It's pretty easy to do pit maneuvers on the opponents though. I've had plenty of cars try to pass just to end up doing a 180 with one slight nudge. My most is three in a row. The AI is actually pretty decent, using the boost when they got it.

10,000 Volt Ghost
Mar 22nd, 2012, 02:09 PM
You get more xp from doing the campaign levels which are kind of fun. Basically the five different classes share all guns. You carry over xp from multi to campaign and campaign to multi which is really good.

Some of the multi modes are fun. Nemesis mode is really hectic. Its like king of the hill but somewhere else in the level you can capture the nemesis computer and it goes on a rampage to the other team.

They have a survivor mode where its 4 on 4 trying to get to a rescue chopper. You can still kill the other team but can also help them get through zombies to get to the chopper. The chopper only has 4 seats on it so it becomes a full on brawl to get a seat at the end even against your own teammates.

Worth renting at least.

Kid Icarus Uprising is what happens when you take a bad NES game, turn it into Sin and Punishment 2, then add ground shooter stages with the worst controls ever, then change the setting to a Universal Studios ride. So basically everything is awesome except that part with the controls.

Edit: I bought a bendy stylus and wrapped it around my thumb. Now the ground levels aren't abysmal anymore. THANKS FOR GIVING ME A BIG STUPID STAND INSTEAD OF A BENDY STYLUS NINTENDO.

I've been playing Kid Icarus with the face buttons to move and the circle pad for targeting. It's working pretty well for me so far, but I still don't have it just right yet. It's like playing FPSs on Dreamcast all over again... sort of.

Anyhoozle, other than the control learning curve, I'm really digging the game. I was really surprised that the dialogue in the game is actually funny, in a really corny way. Also, it's very pretty, especially during the flight sections.

Phoenix Gamma

So I take it, Kid Icarus HAS to be played with the stylus? No alternate Button-Controls?

You can map the face buttons and the circlepad for aiming and moving, but I wouldn't want to use either input for either function. I tried it and it's a pain to get the accuracy that the game demands. I beat about 90% of the game on lv 5 difficulty (2 is the default but it's a little too easy) and I can't imagine beating some of the later stages using the stick or buttons to aim.

If you kept an old DS Phat thumbstrap lying around, you're in the clear.

It's a must play for 3DS owners though, just for the story. It's as funny, probably moreso, than any of the Mario RPGs, and since Kid Icarus really doesn't have an established universe or story, Sakurai basically does what he did in the old Kirby games and fucks with everything and makes up whole new characters and changes all of their alliances around just for laughs before throwing in some kind of "holy shit" level.

Goldeneye's default controls are crap. It took me like 3 hours of fiddling and gameplay fuckups to get them right, and ironsight aiming is still fucking bad. It's nice that they put in auto-targeting, but everyone in multiplayer seems to just fire from the hip. The multiplayer is all right, I guess; I never actually played Goldeneye 64 with anyone else so IDK how it stacks up fun-wise. It feels kind of like a less shitty Modern Warfare.

Bushido Blade is completely fucking amazing and I love it a whole lot.

Silent Hill: Downpour

I'm pretty early in the game, but I like it so far. It's like a mix between SH3, Homecoming and Shattered Memories. It's been getting some below average ratings, but I don't see why. Seems like a pretty solid entry to the series and way better than Homecoming. But, as I said, i'm still pretty much at the beginning so maybe there's some faggy shit coming up.

Also got the Silent Hill HD Collection (XBOX360). Tried the second one, 'cause i've heard that there's a problem with the fog, a certain rape scene is missing and there are some weird bugs, but fortunately the problems seem to be on the PS3 version. I picked up Silent Hill HD Collection the day it came out for PS3. I'm slightly bummed out over the bugs and such, but still it's great playing those two games again. I've been able to pick up on some little details here and there in the background (like writings and such) that wasn't easily seen on PS2.

I found myself being less creep-ed out in SH2 in the prison with the "Ritual" monster. Back when the game first came out and I got to that point it really made me freak the fuck out. Now it's just really cool.

Also, SH3 is WAY more out there than I remember. I get this constant sense of dread playing it, plus fuck that game's version of the hospital. Fuck that room with the mirror, and fuck the hallway with the maternity ward.

Anyhoozle, I picked up Yakuza 4 the other day and now I hate myself for waiting so long to try the series out. It's probably the closest I'll ever get to another Shenmue, Streets of Rage, and a GTA game I actually enjoy all rolled into one.

OxBlood

For some reason, I never got into the Silent Hill Games. I respect them for what they are, but I don´t like them. I never finished SH2 back in the day so I revisited it last year and I was bored out of my mind. Now mind you, I am VERY susceptible to these things normally, but there was just so much in 2 that dragged on and on...mainly the appartment-complex. I must´ve spend hours in that thing just wandering around with nothing happening...

Fatal Frame on the other hand, THAT´S a series that gets to me, I still can´t play part 3 cause I´m kinda afraid of it.

Played the Mass Effect 3 MP yesterday...that thing is fucking hard, and it apparently scales to the number of players. It´s really been a while since I had to pay so much attention when playing a game, it was really tense and kinda fun too. But I HATE the Boosterpack-System they use. Want a new weapon? Buy random packs over and over again until you get what you want. Don´t want that? Spend real money on better boosters...I´m not 13 and this is not fucking Magic the Gathering, so cut it out, EA!

Mad Melvin
Apr 5th, 2012, 08:27 AM
Granted, the apartment complex is the most boring part of pretty much any SH game, but the rest of the game totally makes up for it. It's one of the best games I have played story and atmosphere-wise.

Back to Downpour. I played for a couple of hours yesterday and it just keeps getting better. I really like the scenery, and there was a very beautiful mountain view which reminded me of Alan Wake. The only bad thing so far are close combat weapons. Jesus christ. They fall apart after a few swings and that is not good in a combat situation. You'll have to use your fists, which makes you unable to block and you can do very little damage. Fortunately, there hasn't been that much fighting.

Guitar Woman
Apr 5th, 2012, 11:57 AM
Silent Hill 2's all right, but it's sure as fuck not scary. All the monsters move at about 1/4th the speed James does and die if you spit on them, so, where the fuck's the actual threat? It's all ambiance and no payoff. Pyramid Head's freaky, I guess, but he literally only shows up in gameplay about 4 times. I was expecting more like a rapist Scissorman who'd follow me through doors and shit, which is how everyone described him to me. I was a bit disappointed.

Anyway, if you're having trouble getting into the series, start with SH1. It's easily the best and scariest Silent Hill if you don't mind the dated graphics and slightly goofy/completely disinterested voice acting. I just bought a hard copy, in fact; even though I know what's in the hospital it still makes me shit my pants every time.

Here's a jury-rigged PC port. You should play it!

Every game since then that's tried to mix things up by having a single stealth mission in a game that otherwise encourages you to do the opposite.

Just crawl underneath/into something. That's how I ditched them most of the time.

You can't actually get headshots in the Playstation version, since Snake can't fire his gun in first-person mode. I find I'm also really missing the diving roll, since knocking guards over with it before they radio for help is one of the better simple pleasures of the series. As a much bigger "fuck you," my PS2 is currently bricked and I don't have a Dual Shock 1; it turns out that when you're using a DS2 on an original Playstation, it doesn't register the analog stick properly, so I can't walk. At all. It's pretty fucking hard.

On the other hand, I think the voice-acting is a lot better than in Twin Snakes, and the lack of fucking retarded wire-fu backflips in every single cutscene makes it seem more serious and dramatic, even if that's ruined a bit by the fact that nobody has a face. Twin Snakes did have a better soundtrack, though; I hate how this just uses the standard "Alert Mode" music for like, every boss fight, where I could be listening to shit like this. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ihx2I5D0zgU)

Also that Goldeneye remake is kind of garbage. There's the whole "barely-there story with really bad pacing shitty simplistic stealth and Wii controls are fucking retarded" thing, but worst of all, you can't look up. What the fuck is that? You automatically look up when you're climbing stairs or something, but you absolutely cannot do it at any other time, except for when you're ADSing with a sniper rifle. I know it's a remake of an N64 game but you're not supposed to keep the parts that sucked! That's like how Resident Evil on the Gamecube kept Chris's stupid 6-slot inventory despite the fact that he clearly has more pockets than Jill! Asdf!

The Goldeneye remake pissed me off at the club level where everyone on the dancefloor was a silhouette even when you walked up to them. The fucking PS2 could do better than that, but the devs were just too lazy porting their CoD game and calling it a day.

That Grimrock game looks pretty rad. The combat system looks like it'd be fun to play with.

It is. Itīs very retro but in a very good way. Itīs also way easier than...letīs say Eye of the beholder since you can regenerate Health and Mana quite easily and your party doesnīt die that easily.

Nice little detail: You can craft Potions by combining a flask and a plant via mortar and pestle and if a character drinks it, the flask is not destroyed because...well, thatīs how it is in real life too and it adds a nice ressource management-element.

I just find the magic system kinda lacking, it appears too limited for my tastes, Iīd like to be able to experiment with different effect rather than just having 3, 4 predefined spells per element. Thereīs also no healing magic as far as I can tell but then again, so far, healing is not an issue.

Also, major Kudos for the dungeon- and puzzle-design, itīs really a lot of fun to figure some of these things out...though Iīm stuck on level 4 right now...no idea what to do :D

Dragon Quest VIII.

It's refreshing to see an RPG where my objectives aren't marked by a huge glowing arrow at all times, in case I'm the kind of person who gets lost in my own house; Skyrim and Oblivion both did this over Morrowind's "Yeah, that dungeon's like, south probably? I dunno, go find it, dickhead" approach, and I didn't really appreciate it because it meant less time navigating the world and getting sucked into it. DQ8 doesn't seem to have a lot of hand-holding in general, actually; once we got out of starterville my colleague got lost on the world map and I almost got my shit wrecked in the very first dungeon. Also, it looks fucking enormous and the comic relief is actually legitimately funny.

It's got potential and I'm really digging it so far, but if that little green asshole doesn't shut the fuck up about his horse daughter I'm going to punch his dick so hard he'll end up as the Cursed Queen, wark wark

You're probably not the kind of person who'd like it, honestly, since it's got the exact same art style as Dragonball Z and has a lot of Anime elements to it besides.

I'd skip it unless you were like really really into Final Fantasy as a kid; so far it seems like it's essentially a love letter to every good JRPG ever, only scaled up so grown-ups with brains actually find it challenging

Actually, I think Earthbound pretty much ripped off its entire engine from the Dragon Quest games, so, maybe give it a shot? It's not like you're paying for it.

Silent Hill 3 brought nothing new to the table. Plus, the whole evil cult thing is kinda lame and the characters are pretty forgettable. I also really didn't like the subway station. Just as boring as the apartment complex in SH2. Good game, but not great. The Room started ok, but the fucking ghosts just oh my fucking god no. Did not like it at all. Homecoming had a horrible combat system (and there is too much fighting), but other than that it was ok.

EDIT: And I bet you haven't even played Downpour. The screen lags from time to time, but thats the only major issue with it. It feels fresh and exploring the town is awesome. The mini sidequests keep things interesting and I like the main storyline too. It is not scary at all, but the last creepy game in the series was SH1.

I gave Super Monday Night Combat a shot.

The PC version doesn't have dedicated servers and for some reason I had to wait about 15 minutes before I even joined a match. Someone needs to tell developers that matchmaking systems are in place because consoles are limited pieces of shit, not because it's an inherently superior way to format online multiplayer. They need to be told very, very loudly. At least they had the decency to build a chatroom into the game's main menu so I could complain and swear about it at everyone else.

When I finally did start playing, I found out that they basically took the original Monday Night Combat, and ruined it. I'm not even being a "CHANGE ARE BAD" fanboy here, I hate Monday Night Combat, but it was more polished, balanced, fast-paced, fun, comprehensible, had better graphics, and the announcer was actually funny; the new guys vocalize color commentary like they're describing the drying paint on the wall in front of them. Bottom line is that the original is a shooter with DotA/LoL/Whatever elements, while the new game is a DotA/LoL/Whatever with really bad shooter elements.

I suppose I should have known something was up when they released it for free.

Finally gave Valkyria Chronicles a shot past the first mission. The story is goofy and full of terribly paced and edited JRPG dialogue, and you could take about half the lines and splice them into a porn film while remaining completely in-context. But.

The actual game? It's awesome. It's so awesome. I fucking love it and ended up playing it all night.

I don't remember the last time I had this much fun with a strategy game; probably when I played Fire Emblem 1 and had to find out what all the japanese menu commands did through trial and error, rivers running red with the blood of my senselessly sacrificed goons who walked by scooting along on one leg and dragging the other. Just finished SH2, then did sort of a speed run on it and beat it in around 2 hours and 45 minutes. I like that it also included the sub-scenario from the Xbox version, though I can see people losing their shit if it didn't, and there's apparently been a lot of backlash anyway.

I played Journey tonight!

I think it's pretty much the shortest game I've ever played (like an hour and a half long), but it was also really awesome.

I do have one really big main grievance about it, though, which is that it reveals your companion's gamertag at the end. I was completely ready to just go, "man, it's so depressing that I'll never know who that extremely bossy pal of mine really was, we totally went through FEELINGS together at that mountain part!" and go on imagining what kind of superstar tag-team friendship we could have had, but then it totally tells you who they are, and then comes the friend request. I have a crippling phobia of my fellow human being and don't usually friend someone after playing a game with them for an hour and a half, but how the fuck was I supposed to refuse this guy after all the FEELINGS we went through together, man?

After accepting I promptly shut my PS3 off. I'm afraid to turn it on again. Maybe I should have just declined and said "LET'S NOT RUIN THE MAGIC"

That said, the finale for the mountain blizzard was extremely well-done. By the time both of our scarves had crumbled away, I was like, "yeah, I think we're dead," and then the two of you just sort of trudge forward out of grim desperation, your chirps growing weaker and weaker until eventually you can't do them at all, and then you both fall over dead. I was actually overjoyed during the segment after that when I saw my buddy's beacon blasting off in the distance and joyously raced to reunite with him. It's the kind of experience you should share anonymously with someone else, because having anyone know you had an emotional response makes you a big sissy faggot, and that's why I feel the game let me down by identifying me at the end. "Hey, look at this big faggot with all his girly feelings! Haw haw."

Pretty much, except that you don't build anything. You just pick out your tank, then you roll onto the battlefield, start shooting your opponents, balk when your shots do no damage, then get blown up in one shot.

Oh, and if your tank tank is damaged in a fight, you have to spend the money you grinded to get on repairs.

Onto SH3.

I feel bad for people who decided to not get the HD collection, because of the bad reviews. The only really noticeable problem with SH2 was the boat part where you row towards the hotel. The water looked awful. Then there were a couple of cutscenes where the fog/fire effects were reduced compared to the original games. Looked kinda dumb. Other than that, I really had no problems with it. I keep hearing that the PS3 version has some framerate and sound issues, so maybe some of the criticism is justified, I dunno.

My point is, if you are a fan of SH and want 2 & 3 on a current generation console, this is pretty much a must have. Sure, it could've been made a little better, but it's not like there is going to be a collection like this again.

I prefer having the PS2 versions where they actually remembered to include fog and darkness. I saw a video of 3 being played and the inside of the hospital looks like the sun's fucking lodged in the ceiling. The hell's up with that?

Also do they really not give you the option of having the original voice acting in SH3?

Well, doesn't matter so much to me, since MY PS3 still has backwards compatibility :o

I don't know why the fuck Sony thought it'd be a good idea to remove that; the PS2 has one of the best game libraries of any system, up there with the SNES. The PS3 does not, and making it stand on its own like that was not very bright. I guess they did it so this HD re-release crap would be justified, but 60 GB PS3s aren't even expensive anymore so everyone should get one.

Skullgirls. It's a 2D fighting game built around combos, which is a polite way of saying "it's shit."

Also, you might think that an indie Guilty Gear ripoff would at least not have the same HDTV-or-fuck-you problem that triple-A mainstream games do, but you'd be wrong.

I usually don't even touch fighting games since the last one that wasn't shit was Bushido Blade, but it was recommended to me by a friend who never plays them either, and I'm in the market for a console-exclusive game with really good online multiplayer. So far the only one I've found is Mario Strikers Charged, a game that is nearly five years old.

I broke down and bought MGS4 for this reason, but apparently Konami's gonna shut Metal Gear Online down in June, and have already made it impossible for new players to get in. What the fucking hell? If any company pulled this with a similarly-popular PC game they'd the feet of a million angry fans shoved up their ass. Is that just how games work now? They're not allowed to be played for longer than the average lifespan of a fucking gerbil?

That Massive Action Game thing looks sort of interesting, but it's rather old and I'm afraid that as soon as I buy it they're gonna kill it too. Same with Fat Princess, although that looks a lot more appealing than some brown military shooter.

I almost passed it up because I had never heard of it, and the title sounded like a turn-of-the-century romance novel. It has some interesting elements to it, but nothing to really keep you in for the longterm. Plus, the game is apparently still in the beta phase, even though they're selling it, and different aspects of the gameplay change from one day to the next. I took a break for a few days, and when I came back, they had nerfed (their words) a couple of my favorite abilities.

Maybe try it months from now when a Steam sale drops it down to like $3.

I'm going to spew some of mah opinyuns on MGS4, guys.

This game really, really likes following up genuinely good gameplay segments with horrible fucking shitty awful terrible shit. South America gets followed by that fuckawful Gecko escape corridor and that completely retarded Matrix-sequel fight between Vamp and Raiden, who I swear to god buttfucked during this scene (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YzLQMO0W9U8&t=4m36s). Crying Wolf and most of Shadow Moses get followed by the fight with Vamp, who you can literally one-shot with the rail gun or otherwise take down with a single clip if your aim's alright,
Naomi's death scene, which is probably the game's cinematic low point, with bonus points for Otacon crying over some chick he knew for a day and fucked in a helicopter before she betrayed him and all of his friends and ruined the entire world's shit,
and the REX escape sequence, which is by far the worst section of gameplay yet. The game started out really good, too, I'm disappointed more and more and it feels like the first two chapters are awesome on accident.

Another thing; was it really necessary to have the B&Bs all writhe around going batshit in their stupid skintight bodysuits before putting up completely ineffectual boss fights in which you basically execute them? That's how these after-fights come across to me, as executions, because short of being completely retarded there is no way to lose them. This is in poor enough taste by itself, but their backstories just make the entire thing a joke because they're stupid and ridiculous. I feel more remorse for killing the faceless PMC and FROG troops than I do for killing any of the crazy chicks in the robot suits. Furthermore, I'm not sure it's good design to have a large 8-legged mech that leaps around on walls hold its rider up by the neck.

Also, why the fuck does Vamp keep his knife sheathed right in front of his dick? Is it even possible to make homosexual symbolism more overt than it is between Vamp and Raiden? I feel like I should stick a Brazzers logo on every screenshot that contains the two of them.

It's probably the only MGS sequel I've genuinely enjoyed, though.

Going through it as an adult with the benefit of not being a retarded 9-year-old, I can safely say that it's... fucking good. It's really good. Brilliant, even.

What with the whole stigma and hatedom for this game on the internet, as well as all of its really terrible sequels, I completely forgot that I ever loved it. I'm glad I bought it again because it's stolen more of my hours than anything else on the PS3 and reminded me why I even like video games in the first place.

It's also too easy and the chocobo sidequest is a pile of shit, but I'm fine with that.

There are teleport-stones but they only transport you back to the capitol and one other marked location. But they are one-time items and one costs around 10.000 Gold as far as I can tell.

The traveling is part of the gameplay, using daylight to get through the more dangerouse areas, finding shelter for the night.

The constant chattering can get annoying but you can basically tell your main pawn hey dude, sit down, we need to talk, and he'll ask you how you want him to behave, including the frequency and tone in which he comments on things and how high his urge to pick up items is and so on.

60hrs into Dragons Dogma. While far from perfect with the clunky menu-system and occasional technical problems (pop-ins, framerate-drops, etc.), this is still the best RPG I´ve played in the last few years.

The combat is fluid, the character-progression is immensly satisfying, the pawn-system is good, the story is inspired if poorly presented, the world is beautiful, the whole game immerses the player in a very world that is neither too dark, nor too japanese, it strikes a very good balance between western culture and japanese game systems.

You will find almost no humorous dialogue here, no silly out-of-place-people and the move to make the gameworld a simple Duchy instead of a Kingdom is simple but very effective, it makes the scale of the world and land feel more accurate (because let´s face it, Cyrodiil in Oblivion is no Province with no fricking Emperor, it´s a small valley with a few houses).

All of the classes have their own unique feel to it, the Magic Archer plays kind of like a Strider but not quite, same with the Mystic Knight and the Fighter, they all share certain moves and elements but they each different enough to warrant many class-changes or playthroughs with NG+

There´s a shitload of quests (you get the 100 DLC-Quest-Bullshit Capcom pulled for free, in Germany at least), there´s tons of places to wander to because there´s no real fast-travel system in place, at least not one the player can use all the time and the game has the most beautiful.

It combines the impactful combat of Amalur with the world and feel of Dark Souls without being as unforgiving, it throws big enemies at you at every corner, all of which require you to adapt your strategy (though a Tornado is always a viable answer to these problems).

And what´s important: Accomplishing something here FEELS like you actually accomplished something. Every piece of loot is something you worked for, every Class-up brings with it the want to get back to the city to get new and better skills but hey, you´re somewhere out in the mountains, fighting Harpies and on your way back you might encounter a Golem or you might not make it before nightfall and if you´re stuck in the woods by then, you can´t see a thing which means you also won´t see the Chimera behind the tree over there and HEY, Undead Warriors and Mages join the party...

You get my drift, I suppose. When you finally get back to the Castle, you feel like you really experienced something on your way home and you earned all those new skills and items you then improve at the Smithy.

All in all, this is my personal game of the year.

Guitar Woman

Final Fantasy 5!

I've played this before (although not very far, about to the desert) but I never realized just how badly you could break the game if you picked the right classes. I never thought to touch Monk because Blackbelts were awful in FF1, but here they hit twice for decent damage (200 total on a good day), get a freebie counter attack about half the time when something hits them, and have a move called Buildup that doubles their damage pretty much for free; the attacks you get from this can crit on top of that, and Monks crit a lot, so by the time I got to the third boss I accidentally one-shot it with a 192/400 damage attack. I think it had like 575 health.

This is not mentioning how you can level your mage classes up further than they'll need to be for like 5 hours in the very first dungeon, then turn them into paladins or thiefwizards or whatever. And Blue Magic is, as always, a freight train with a cowcatcher made out of chainsaws.

I don't know why, but I always get immense satisfaction from breaking JRPGs like this. I think it's the main reason I liked FF8.

I didn't really care for Lords of Shadow, so I'll pass on the sequel, but I sort of want to check out the 3DS Castlevania. As far as I can tell it's totally just Castlevania 3 but plays like yet another Devil May Cry/God of War clone... that's a sidescroller.

I"m pretty much sold on any sidescroller that comes out now. Thankfully "retro" and indie games have brought back a lot of the old staples from the 8 and 16 bit days and made them original and innovative again. I'd love to see a new console sidescroller come out with a huge budget just to see what can be still done.

Oh, by the way, it's totally Alucard.

I've been playing lots of Gravity Rush. That game is just charming as fuck, and the gravity mechanic is really cool. The combat is pretty unpolished though, and they should have added more collectibles and moves. Everything else is fantastic though. I really adore Sony's JapanStudio.

Well, it does the same thing when you win.

Also, Final Fantasy 13 plays like Chrono Trigger for retards. I kind of like it.

The story is sorta interesting but very badly written; about one in three cutscenes makes me facepalm at some point, and reading the Datalog is absolutely required to comprehend what's happening. fal'cie? l'cie? Sanctum? Pulse? What the fuck am I listening to and why are there so many apostrophes?

Edot:
This game seems to be so badly written that it loops around to become interesting again if you take a step back and consider how fucked up all the characters are really acting; I'm enjoying the game better by assuming that most of them are mentally ill to varying degrees (or in Snow's case just retarded fucking assholes who date high-school girls).

People keep saying that Lightning is just femme-Cloud but she's really more like Solid Snake, a hot-shit adrenaline junkie soldier who is generally incapable of functioning without being in battle all the time, both because she needs the rush and because it's all she knows. Right after she decides to just assault Sanctum headquarters, the loading screen's recap says something along the lines of "With no clues to follow and time running out, she's made Eden her target. Having a target is simple; having a target is something she understands." Which, to me, implies that she doesn't know how to deal with problems in ways other than killing them. I really liked that moment when she decides, "fuck it, fuck Cocoon, fuck the fal'Cie, fuck my Focus, and fuck the l'Cie rules; I'm just going to go up there and wreck the shit of every motherfucker who's crossed me." She's essentially doomed no matter what, possibly to a fate worse than death, but also happens to be a walking magical nuke, so she uses that to lash out in anger at whatever's there. It's something I personally would want to do in that situation, it felt like a very human reaction.

I'm finding her general behavior more and more distraughtening as time goes on, especially the way she doesn't attempt to discourage Hope from going after Snow for revenge; she knows full well that the main reason he's following her is to get strong enough to kill him, and she doesn't care - she gives him what he wants. The way that she doesn't seem to see anything bad about that means there's something wrong with her. Hope is 14 years old. He's a confused, pissed-off teenager with selfish, reckless, horrible, and above all completely misinformed motives, and encouraging and training him to murder someone (her brother-in-law, no less) is not good guardian behavior; something like that has a high probability of completely ruining his life and/or driving him crazy. You can already see it starting in a bit after Light begins bonding with him, and Hope develops this creepy, creepy fixation on a memento jackknife she gives to him. He pulls it out and bares the blade whenever he's having a hard time dealing with something (which happens in every cutscene), and then he just stares at it while he talks; it's some fucking serial killer shit. Lightning seems at least partially creeped out every time he does it, but she's not stopping him or going "dude, you're acting fucking creepy. not cool" and taking the knife away, she's enabling him to be a crazy fuck. I guess she figures that since they're either going to die within the week (or more likely before the day is over), get encased in crystal for eternity or turn into zombies, Hope's future mental health doesn't matter, as long as he's an effective sidekick until everything is over. From where I'm standing, Lightning and Hope have an incredibly sick and mutually selfish relationship, even with the warm and fuzzy bonding scenes; they've been using each other since they teamed up, and they're exacerbating each other's shit big time. I don't know if the game intended for me to think this or if it's going to follow it up, but I really hope that's the case because it's damned interesting and tragic and I've had a genuine emotional response to it (creeped the fuck out).

Anyway, 10 bucks for this game was a steal, even if the only good parts of the story are there completely on accident. I can't remember the last time I enjoyed a new Final Fantasy so much.

Tried the demo for Spec Ops. Seemed like a perfectly pedestrian cover-based shooter set in the Middle East, yet people are claiming it's a great and unique game. I guess it opens up more in the full game?
