I've known about the foot fetish thing for a very long time, but every once in a while when someone directly addresses it, it seems weird and uncomfortable. Like when he was on Tyra and she said "I know what YOUUUUU LIIIKE" and took off her shoe and waggled her foot in front of him.

The scene where Salma Hayek poured booze down her leg, over her foot, into his mouth made me similarly uncomfortable, although I'm not exactly sure why. I don't have a problem with foot fetishes in theory.

I myself am quite safe from Mr Tarantino, as he seems to like long, bony feet with skinny bony toes, and mine look nothing like that. Also because I don't know the man at all.

I don't understand why fetishes creep people out any more than "normal" sex.

Kitsa
Jul 12th, 2011, 07:18 AM
That's part of it.

I was going to say it was the overtness of the sexuality, but that's not it exactly. It's more the unexpected intimacy. He's not playing someone who gets off at (fetish), he's actually getting off on it then. I mean, it's not like he's whipping it out in scene or something, but it's in the background somewhere.

Just saw Horrible Bosses. My date suggested it on the basis of Jennifer Aniston raping that dude from It's Always Sunny, so we came for that (and boy did we!) but stayed for the comedy, because it was actually really funny. Kevin Spacey has some great moments. It just sucks that he's the only boss that really gets much screentime, cause I wanted to see more of Colin Farell and Aniston.

La Faute à Fidel (Blame it on Fidel).

I read reviews that this was a really charming coming-of-age movie, but it was really sad and depressing and slow. It's about as cheery as Mouchette, which ends with

the little-girl protagonist getting raped and offing herself.

Blame it on Fidel is about this little French girl who comes from a wealthy but not necessarily happy family. While she's attending her aunt and uncle's wedding at her wealthy grandparents' vineyard, she becomes aware that her dad's sister is there with her daughter, Pilar. They're refugees from Franco's Spain, and their arrival in France is a sort of catalyst for her parents going completely politically flaky.

Most of the early movie is about the girl's (Anna's) privileged life...convent schools, huge house, vacations in the country, swim meets, and so on. But as her dad and mom become "inspired" to be social activists, her childhood as she knew it gradually disappears. The parents, giving not a single shit about how it'll affect their kids' happiness or stability, decide suddenly to become communists, run off to Chile, trade the big house for a cramped apartment filled with "revolutionaries", and so on. The mother, who had a cushy writing job with Marie-Claire, decides to randomly and fervently adopt feminist causes instead. The kids are just kind of lost in all of this. They never know who they'll meet coming home from school, because their parents ditched the nanny they grew up with in favor of various refugee women.

Soon, the poor kids are so confused they don't know what's right anymore. Their grandparents are strict, moneyed Catholics and represent the comfort the children are used to; the parents are fickle and sort of fashionably Communist and get pissed if the kids don't jump on all the arbitrary bandwagons they do. At one point, they actually drag the little girl to a protest march, not seeming to care when she gets tear-gassed and lost.

The girl gets in some good observations, asking them if they really understand the difference between "group solidarity" and "sheep-thinking". She appears scowling and thoughtful throughout the movie, like she's trying to assemble some sort of belief system from all the crap that's being thrown at her.

I'm not exactly sure what point the director was wanting to make, so I took from it that her parents' fickleness and unreliability, combined with what she absorbed and observed, made her a stronger and smarter kid.

By the end of the movie I really hated her parents, but she seemed to grow to accept them.

One of the sadder parts for me was the repetition of scenes where kids wanted to "Sunday" (sort of a French family thing where the entire family hangs out together, it's called "Sundaying") and the parents eventually just blew them off altogether with some sort of crap about bourgeois yadda yadda.

Depressing movie.

this movie is awesome how had i not seen this one yet? what i like about this one is that there are fights almost constantly. it's not like other wuxias in which they sometimes spend a bit too much time on plot progression and character development. this one is basically "hey you owe me money" "i'm not going to give it to you!" [fight ensues] -SCENE-
"that's a nice sword." "thanks i use it to do this" [fight ensues] -SCENE-

opera (dario argento)
definitely the type of silly slasher film that has you shouting "just leave the house/just call the police/etc." like a jackass. also silly italian iron maiden rip-offs come nowhere close to the awesome power of GOBLIN, sorry dario.

project a, dragon lord, island of fire
lumping these together because they're all jackie chan/sammo hung/yuen biao/mars movies and they're all equally as awesome being so.

the myth (jackie chan)
to be fair we only watched this one because project a-2 wouldn't load and we didn't feel like re-watching who am i? but i'd much rather see jackie fight in a small barn than in front of a green screen. too much budget and too little substance, but the dude is old as fuck and puts so much into his movies, so whatever. it wasn't bad, just stupid.

Watching fear. Never seen it before. Mark wahlburg fingerbangs reese witherspoon on a register. Then mark goes also crazy but still badass as shit.

The first time I saw True Grit, three obese slugs sat in front of me talking all the way through it, rustling their wrappers, and not once but twice the one person's phone rang. I thought she had turned it off after the first time but then it rang five minutes later. All through this, I didn't realise but I was developing a flu. I was freezing cold and just thought the air conditioning was up really high, but by later that night I was in bed, fully clothed, shivering and wishing I was dead.

The second time I watched it was on a shitty ancient DVD player and the disc kept skipping and going out of synch.

Despite all of this, I thoroughly enjoyed it both times.

Rooster Cogburn.

I dunno. I mean, it's sort of an attempt to stretch out the True Grit thing with a female lead old enough to be a noncreepy love interest. Still avenging a murdered father, still more manly than womanly, and so on. It's the only time that John Wayne and Katherine Hepburn ever appeared together and it's like his second-to-last movie or something, so I guess if you're into westerns you should watch it just to watch it.

I thought Jeff Bridges played a better drunk Rooster Cogburn than John Wayne did, but that's just me.

Have you ever noticed that people with healthy eyes who wear eyepatches inevitably curl their lips on the side with the patch? Maybe they feel like they need to hold the patch on with their cheek.

The Owl and the Sparrow. Predictable but sweet movie. A little Vietnamese girl flees her mean uncle's sweatshop and runs off to Saigon. While there, she is befriended by street urchins and told how to make money to survive...first by selling postcards on the street, then by becoming a "flower girl"...(sort of like a pimp-prostitute setup, only she's wearing a school uniform and selling flowers and turning all the money over to the "flower lady"). She befriends a sad zookeeper who's stalking his ex, then she befriends a lonely flight attendant who can't find the right guy, and so of course she has to bring them together. The amazing thing is that she secures this new life for herself in five days.

"Following Sean". It was a good premise but it sort of rambled and took forever. It could easily have been 45 minutes shorter.

It was about the making of the documentary "Sean", which was a series of interviews of a 4 year old growing up with hippie parents in the Haight-Ashbury in...I think 1969. "Following Sean" was supposed to be a continuation, checking back in with him, seeing what he was like as an adult.

Except it sort of meandered and became more about the filmmaker. Would have been fine, but it could've been done differently...I think the filmmaker ultimately talked more about himself than the subject of the documentary, and to me it came off as a little gratuitous.

I briefly considered dressing my daughter as Addie, since she has the same scowl and haircut, but then I thought no one would get that as a halloween costume.

"World's Greatest Dad", starring Robin Williams and written/directed by Bobcat Goldthwait. I know, I know. But.

Fuck.

First of all, I would not have believed Bobcat Goldthwait was capable of writing such a thing. He probably gets that a lot, or underappreciation wouldn't have been a major plot element. There are so many levels and things going on, I don't even know where to start.

Second, what a fucking uncomfortable "dark comedy". I could have happily gone the rest of my life without seeing Robin Williams' dick, thanks.

Third, even if you hate Robin Williams (and that's the first thing I said when the movie was loading), watch it, it's good.

I was honestly pissed when I heard they made the new Fright Night, but it was done right.
It never felt like they were just rehashing the original with crappier actors, or pissing on the original in a attempt to make it more "real".

All of the old rules are there (you must have faith for the cross to work, you have to invite the vampire in, etc.) and Dr. Who was great as Peter Vincent without even trying to compete with Roddy McDowall.

So, I'm watching Priest and while it's not a great movie, at least it isn't a remake of a movie that's only a few decades old.

Did it really need to be updated or should the produces actually have scoured the books and comics looking for something interesting to turn into a movie?

Just got back from Don't Be Afraid of the Dark. (as you know) I'm a HUGE fan of del toro, and the original movie was freaky as hell when i was a kid.

It's literally just a nice, simple remake with a budget and run through guillermo-ville. People are bitching about it, blah blah blah high expectations, the monsters are goofy, critics are nitpicky fags and no horror movie on earth is actually scary for grown-ass adults. With that out of the way, it was fun as hell and I didn't regret paying for a movie ticket. my only complaint is

THE TOOTH FAIRY BULLSHIT DIDN'T WORK IN HELLBOY II, WHY WOULD YOU TRY IT IN AN ACTUAL HORROR FLICK? THEY WANT HER SOUL, ALL THAT TOOTH CRAP WAS JUST AN EXCUSE FOR THE OPENING TEETH-SMASHING SCENE AND IT'S JUST SILLY

Terry Gilliams second best movie. Bruce Willis was maybe a bit miscast, but did a good job nontheless. Thought provoking film and just hypnotic in a weird kind of way. The ending was excellent. I watched Falling Down again today for the 10th time. I don't know why I enjoy it that much, but Michael Douglas is just bad ass in it. And fucked in the head.

I watched Rango the other day too. I wish it would become a full series, it has kind of a 90's cartoon feel and sense of humour to it.

Yeah, I can only watch good movies so many times before I get tired of them. But I can watch falling down whenever I want and it's still entertaining to me.

I've developed an affection for American Movie over the last few months. It's still great. I recently watched Troll 2 for the first time; the jury's still out on that.

I love American Movie. It's really inspiring to see people with hardly any talent and borrowed uncle money going out and making something that they believe in, even if it takes years and years to complete and turns out to be complete garbage. When you watch those sorts of cheap horror movies it's easy to forget that at least the people involved went out and made something in their spare time rather than sitting behind a computer slagging off everyone elses thing, like all you slobs.

I watched my new special edition of Rock and Roll High School with deleted scenes. Good lord I love that movie so much. One of these days I need to review it.

It's funnier knowing how high/drunk/fucked-up everyone was while making it.

Falling Down is one of my favorite movies and I am normally anti-remake but this is one movie that I think Hollywood should remake given the current economic climate. People would eat that shit up, especially Not-Economically Viable Man (best scene in the whole movie):

I watched "Everything Must Go" today. It wasn't a bad movie. It just wasn't the movie it could have been. And there wasn't a big payoff at the end. But I like Will Farrell in it and the little black kid. Overall, 2 and a half floppy dicks out of 5.

We Were Soldiers. Ia Drang told the way it happened, according to LtC Hal Moore, who helped out on the film. The extras DVD has some pretty cool insights from him.

I watched The Life Aquatic for the first time since it came out, and I don't know. I still find it hard to get into.

I do love the joke, though, where Bill Murray asks Owen Wilson if he can hear the whales, and then a tanker horn goes off and Owen Wilson, all sophisticated with a pipe, goes "Beautiful. I wonder what they're saying".

God ugh Life Aquatic is fucking awful. Like, terrible awful. Like that time Chojin, OJB, and myself thought it would be a good idea to mix every alcohol in the house and take a shot of it. OJB ended up licking the cat to get rid of the taste.

Life Aquatic is about that bad.

Bottle Rocket starts out really slow, but anything from the motel scene onward is good. I really like Royal Tenenbaums, and Rushmore is great too but that one has a few really cringe-inducing scenes. :(

I think the Darjeeling Limited is my favorite, though, but that might not be a popular opinion.

He didn't have that haircut in the last commercial I saw him in.

I watched The Witches of Eastwick. I last read the novel years ago, and I found it for like 50 cents at Gabriel's so I grabbed it again to refresh my memory. I was sort of meh on it, then when I rented the movie I was even more meh on that. I also realized that certain scenes looked familiar, so I must have watched the movie when I was a kid or something.

I had to write a paper on him about a year ago. I'm still adding to it to try and get it in a journal. But in the course of researching for it, I found that he's just a pretty cool dude. :\

And the parody of himself he did in the American express commercial was great.
