I didn't like darjeeling limited that much. he imagery is great though. Also on the dvd there is a prologue with natalie portman's ass in it. :wank

Oh god. What a waste of time. I suffered through it and the only thing I liked was the mouse tower scene at the end. Paul Rudd and Zach Galiganisafiioafs are really starting to annoy me.

Meh. Some funny lines here and there, but I really hated the main characters. Colin Farrell was pretty awesome though, and pretty much the best thing about the movie.

I want to see killer elite, but don't feel like paying 12 dollars to see a movie in the theater. It looks really good though. I like the part in the trailer where a guy is tied to a chair and beats up on someone with the chair that is tied to him. Then he jumps out of a window while tied to the chair. Just following that scene is "Based on a true story", which makes me laugh so much every time I see it.

I watched the documentary Kubrick's Odyssey - Secrets Hidden in the Films of Stanley Kubrick by Jay Weidner. It's basically Jay Weidner arguing that Kubrick faked the moon landings and that The Shining was his way of confessing it subliminally. It sounds like bollocks, but when you actually see it it's quite convincing. I've always hated conspiracy theories but I think I believe this one. :/

Fathom Zero
Sep 30th, 2011, 02:24 PM
Which moon landings? The ones that the recent satellites took pictures of with things like the flags, footprints, and landing sites?

It's always been a massive rub to me when people draw their own conclusions into something by reading too far into things.

Love Kubrick, though - he's probably the reason why I do photography.

Krythor
Sep 30th, 2011, 02:42 PM
Well his argument is that they did go to the moon, but that the televised versions were fakes. Not that the moon landings just didn't happen.

Anyway, like I said, I already have deep shame and self loathing about my belief and am not going to push it on anyone. Watch it if you can, it's easily available torrented. Even if you don't believe it, The Shining analysis is excellent.

Krythor
Sep 30th, 2011, 02:43 PM
I should point out as well that the part where he tries to analyse the moon landing photos is easily the worst part. And there are another two follow up films about the rest of Kubrick's work scheduled for 2012 and 2013.

Fathom Zero

I'M NOT TRYING TO PROSECUTE YOU OR MAKE YOU FEEL BAD FOR LIKING SOMETHING. :tear

And that person sounds like has something of an obsession. I'll check it out - I haven't seen a decent documentary in ages.

Krythor
Sep 30th, 2011, 05:13 PM
Be warned: the quality is of a good youtube video, and he has a terrible way with words. E.g, at one point he says "The Shining is Kubrick's masterpiece. However, I use the word masterpiece lightly, as I do not actually like the film." There are a few more ridiculous lines like that in it. But it's still interesting.

Oh God, I've opened a pandora's box of humiliation that's too late to close. :lol

Demon Wind! This movie is awesome!
It's filled with so many WTF moments that you would absolutely hate this film if you didn't just enjoy the 80's goodness. :halloween2

A few gems from the film that are never explained or addressed: a dropped snow-globe causes the whole house to explode; a journal says the hero must find 7 daggers in order to defeat the ultimate evil (two of the daggers are already collected), never happens; the hero turns into an elf-thing for no reason. :halloween

Kitsa

The Infidel. It was good, but it wasn't as riotously funny as I thought it would be.

It's about a British Muslim who, although he's personally "relaxed" in his own religious observations, still hits all of the big requirements and is quite anti-Semitic. While he's cleaning out his recently deceased mom's house, he finds some paperwork and discovers he's adopted. A visit to the agency reveals that he's in fact....wait for it....Jewish! Now he's got to reconcile that with various anti-Semitic pressures he's experiencing. For example, his son wants to marry the daughter of a controversial cleric and he's expected to put on an extra-pious front until the blessing's obtained.

There were a lot of funny parts and I think the overall message has value in the whole let's-hug-it-out sense, but I was confused sometimes. As soon as the guy figures out he's Jewish by birth, he seems to be completely engulfed by the burning desire to out himself one way or another. There was no "hm, that's interesting, but I'm this now and I'm going to get on with my life". He did the very un-Jewish thing of loudly proclaiming- literally yelling- how Jewish he was at every opportunity, and then randomly going out of his way to completely reverse and conceal it. There were a few other iffy plot points, but this was a big thing throughout.

dude, demon wind looks awesome. is it online somewhere?

a zed and two noughts
this movie was weird. not coherent enough to be good. some bits were funny, though. also, it got "the teddy bears' picnic" stuck in my head for a few days.

the verdict
paul newman in a 2-hour episode of "the practice," basically. i liked it. made me miss watching law & order.

wheels on meals
jackie chan, sammo hung, yuen biao. not one of their best, but entertaining enough.

network
now i know where "i'm mad as hell and i'm not going to take it anymore" originated. i expected more from this movie - i liked where it was going, at the beginning, and then it just spent the last 90 minutes being boring.

they call me MISTER tibbs
sidney poitier as virgil tibbs is somehow always entertaining. i don't even know why. sidney poitier makes silly, awful movies... but i like them.

the favor, the watch, and the really big fish
this was on the netflix queue because it has jeff goldblum in it. silly movie, otherwise. i don't really get what they were going for.

mid-august lunch
some old italian guy babysits a bunch of other old italian guys' mothers. totally silly, but kind of funny.

contract killer
people love jet li, but i just don't get it. he does some neat-o jumps and stuff, but he's no jackie chan.

also night of demons remake? awful! for the first half of that movie i was like "that dude looks like fat, unemployed edward furlong" before finally realizing "that is fat, unemployed edward furlong!"

and redoing the bauhaus scene with type o negative is awful. i love type o negative, don't get me wrong, but man!

Ghosts of Mars was a putrid piece of a turd and I thought Carpenter gave up directing altogether because of how bad it was. Suffice to say, I was very interested to see what made him come out of retirement.

A below average horror movie with a twist, apparently. Couple of nice scares, but you pretty much see every "BOO!" moment coming from miles away. Suprisingly, I didn't guess the twist ending so thats a plus. Worth a watch, but very forgettable. Shame.

Robocop 2. I don't understand why people always shit on this movie. I've avoided watching it because of it's reputation but that was a mistake, it's fantastic.

THANK YOU. People shit on it because they never really understood that movies about a cyborg cop fighting crime in future Detroit are inherently kind of, you know, goofy and fun as hell. Fuck the third one, though >: ninja "robots" played by one actor, my ass

Leviathan. Another Peter Weller movie I watched recently. The first half where they're introducing the characters and the setting are pretty good but the second half with the monster is terrible.

Fuck yeah, that movie was so goddamned boring in the second half. I had more fun watching that steaming pile Deepstar Six, for God's sake. I just rented 2 vids. Limitless and The Conspirator, and as a rare treat I enjoyed both

Limitless was a decent flick about a guy who samples this drug that opens up the human mind to 100% functionality. Everything you ever experienced is now accessable, none of this psychic or telekinesis bullcrap that people think would happen if you had 100% brain use. Just good old fashioned firing on all cylinders. He ends up with the bulk of all that is left of the drug. With his ability to comprehend, intake, and plan enhanced exponentially, he soon becomes a wizard of wall street. But soon others covet the drug and problems arise as his supply dwindles. I liked that the ending was not what I was expecting, but not in a dumb Shamalamadingdong way, in more of a clever way where the obvious ending was not where they went.

The Conspirator is a bit of Historical dramatization of the Mary Surratt trial. An interesting flick, with some decent performances. If you dig historical movies, give it a shot.

Yeah. Well, I mean I think I caught all of the major themes and most of the minor ones. ("Which is scarier, the religious nutjobs or the government", "People do crazy things for authority figures", "Won't someone please think of the children", etc)

Although Michael Parks is fantastic and this was right up his character-actor alley, I thought that some of his sermons, particularly the big opener, ran a bit long. There was always either too much exposition, or too little of it. There were some timeline jumps, like going from John Goodman eating his breakfast and us finding out what the fuck he had to do with anything, to John Goodman standing outside the compound with a full raid team. I thought that really messed with the smoothness and continuity of the film.

I did enjoy the lady from Mr. Rogers yelling "Cocksucker!" out the window just before she went down in a hail of bullets, though. I did enjoy that.

The special effects were great for the budget he had, but the shakycam. I hate the shakycam so much.

Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes

I actually really enjoyed this one. On paper this seems like a totally pointless sequel (or prequel) and I was expecting some mindless CGI-action with bland characters. I'm glad I was wrong. I was amazed at how "human" the ape character was, considering that it was all cgi and with no dialogue. The scenes between John Lithgow and James Franco were also quite touching.

I dunno, I just really liked this one. I got the same warm fuzzy feeling I got when I first saw Jurassic Park when it came out. This is not a masterpiece by any means, but as far as blockbusters go, this is one of the more entertaining ones i've seen.

I watched Batman: Year One. What a stinker. I've said it before and I'll say it again: why does all American animation have to look like anime now? It's not even as if they're taking inspiration from anime and using a few similar techniques, they're actually trying to make it look Japanese. I picture directors standing over the animator's shoulders saying, "it's not stiff and awkward enough yet, make it look more Japanese." Alot of the style of anime is down to Japanese animation studios producing more material on a smaller budget than their American counterparts and therefore having to cut corners with generic designs, recycled shots, stiff action and one syllable mouths. And everyone wants to copy it? Pathetic.

I've been watching Batman: The Animated Series this week too and it's astonishing that it's now almost 20 years old and had more character, style and substance to the animation than this horrendous piece of garbage Batman: Year One.

I've read alot of criticism about the voice acting. I didn't think it was that bad.

I remember thinking when that came out how ridiculous the storyline was, but you're right, as time has gone on it's become better. If some of the more ludicrous aspects like the guy owning a stealth boat were dialled down it would probably make a good Daniel Craig film. I really like the opening scene at the arms fair.

I used to always think Goldeneye was the best of the Brosnan movies. I watched it recently though and it's weird how everything about it on paper sounds great but is executed so poorly. I feel sorry for Brosnan, being one of the best Bonds in the worst Bond movies.

The Thing (2011)

Not as bad as I expected. I kinda liked it, actually. It wasn't that good of a movie plotwise and there was pretty much zero characted developement, but I really like the fact that they made this movie with the utmost respect for the original. It ties really well to the things we see in the norwegian camp in the John Carpenter's version. The special effects were pretty good and the movie was entertaining from beginning to end. The thing that sucks the most about this film, is the pacing. It was too damn hectic. There was no time to develop any of the characters and it really puts a dent on the tension and atmosphere when you parade the alien on screen just after 20 minutes. I'm really hoping for a director's cut version.

leonard part 6 - timeless stupid comedy
snake in eagle's shadow - awesome
hellraiser - sweeeeet
hellraiser 2 - sweeeeeeeet
hellraiser 3 - ok
a very long engagement - not as entertaining as his other films, but better than i expected anyway
arsenic & old lace - p. funny though i don't really like clark gable
chinatown - i don't really get why this one is so loved
amadeus - same goes for this one
executioners - the sequel to the heroic trio. worse than the original? i don't remember. crap.
bonnie & clyde - all right. faye dunaway has this weird thing where she's really pretty from some angles but not so much others

I don't even remember Clark Gable being in it. I think it's Cary Grant's best movie though.

Yeah, but if he hadn't spoken I wouldn't of even realized it. :)

La Haine (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAxWdDzGZDU). Hadn't seen it in ages, and it's still awesome. I saw it in an entirely different light this time around, though.

I really liked game of shadows.

This is for Aaarg and possibly Kahljorn that might get this reference.

At the two minute mark. When I played tekken 3 as eddy I would always chant XXX OOO XO XO XO XO XXX OOO XXO XXXOOX OO while doing copeira moves just to piss him off.

Stranger Than Fiction

It was pretty good, actually. Original idea and Will Ferrell was ok in a more serious role.

The Departed

It's been a couple of years since I last saw this. I think I liked it even more than I did the first time. Good movie and Mark Wahlberg's character was still pretty funny. The only thing that stood out as a negative was Jack Nicholson's irish accent. It was horribly fake.

To me Mark Walhberg can do anything and I'd prob watch it.

I Heart Huckabee's was awesome. Cowboys and Aliens is the fucking shit, go see it.

Anyone ever heard of The Music Never Stopped? J.K. Simmons is the lead in it. It really the only movie I've seen that I could really call "the happiest/saddest movie ever". Really, really good flick.

Chronicle. I'd suggest it is a must see.

Not really a spoiler, but there was one moment in the movie where I yelled "Oh My God!" and I never do that. I was expecting snarky looks from my fellow moviegoers, yet most of them said much the same thing.

Not really a movie, but I watched Terry Pratchett's documentary "Choosing to die". :tear

It was really hard to watch and I never want to see it again. Still, it was an important documentary and everyone should see it.

Parts of the King of Fighters movie. I don't want to partially watch it again but I do want to know why people were shooting lightning at other people.

Just saw a WWII movie from the 70s called Cross of Iron. It was Germans on the Eastern front, in English language. Pretty much sucked.

Boring, plenty of cliches and historical inaccuracies, and it had a very underwhelming ending. Somebody told me to watch it, as it was supposedly a classic.

One of the characters was casually talking about how tough it was in the encirclement of Stalingrad... despite everyone who survived being a POW until at least the 1950s. That really annoyed me.

Samurai Cop (1989)

It was awesome. Nothing in this movie worked. The acting was godawful, the plot made little sense, the dialogue was very odd and there were unnecessary sex scenes just to show boobs to the audience.

A little taste of the awfulness:
