10,000 Volt Ghost
Apr 26th, 2010, 05:06 PM
The first time I watched it was with the crazy ex and she thought I was a horrible person because that's exactly how I talk to my guy friends....especially with my roommate. Then we watched that and Clint was basically like "Here's how guys talk."
Made my day.

Wisconsin Death Trip.
If you're considering watching it, I'd advise against it. If you in any way tend toward depression or suicidal ideation, I'd really advise against it.
The title is sort of misleading. Going into it, we thought it was going to be some sort of based-on-a-true-story horror movie, or a history-channel style documentary. And hey, it was about Wisconsin, where 2/3 of the people in this household have spent large chunks of their lives.
Wrong. Wrong.
It is a slow, steady slog in black and white, with ominous music playing, account after account of grisly suicide after psychotic episode after child death after baby death after shots of bleak winter landscape. I mean, it actually wears you down to watch it. After about 10 minutes, you want to shoot yourself in the head. The music...dear god, the music.
I'm still completely confused as to what made them choose that title (for the book this is based on), because it implies something completely different. "Lighthearted" isn't the phrase I'm going for, but more in that direction.
Ugh, that music. It's going to give me nightmares.

In other news, a couple on the bus the other day were talking about how great and scary Paranormal Activity was, and I felt like turning around and telling them that in actual fact, Kitsa and Sam said it was rubbish.
Kitsa

it is rubbish. Total rubbish. With no redeeming qualities whatsoever.
Every time that girl screamed, "MEEEE-CAHHH", I wanted to punch someone in the face.
Edit: as a matter of fact, I can sum up that movie in one damn picture. I saw this at a county fair a few years ago. Paranormal Activity is this exactly.

Last year I went to the Ohio State Fair, I saw this booth that had "The living doll". Which was a person they claimed was around 2 feet tall that you could take a gander at for a dollar. Well, being a skeptic (albeit a curious one) I expected in our modern times that it would be some animatronic doll and wanted to see what the 'gimmick' was going to in fact be. I paid my dollar, walked in and to my chagrin found out they indeed drug around a 2 foot tall woman for yokels to gawk at. I was flabbergasted that this sort of thing still went on and felt rather horrible that I was now a part of it by paying to look at this person.
In the end, my GF said, "well can you think of a better way for her to earn a living?" and I felt a it better about it.
Kitsa

I guess it would all hinge on her opinion of her circumstances.
I figured the "Strange Thing" would be a feejee mermaid or something.

Kitsa
May 1st, 2010, 07:48 PM
Ok, finished Zoo this afternoon, and I was a little confused about two aspects. I'm going to try and do this without needing a spoiler tag.
1) Did they sort of abruptly non sequitur the entire movie to interview someone about being in that very movie?
2) I'm a bit confused about the message. Toward the end, it seemed like they were going for, "But for one minor detail, the hero could be the villain here."
well, it's a PRETTY FUCKING IMPORTANT DETAIL.
I also felt sorry for what ended up happening to the horse in question, but I could see where they were going.
Oh, hell, I can't avoid the spoiler tag.
I kept saying, "...EXCEPT THEY FUCK HORSES!" I couldn't deal with the wide-eyed innocent shit they were doing. Sure, they're great guys....EXCEPT THEY FUCK HORSES! Or are fucked by horses, anyway.
I also think there's a line between "loving" an animal, and this intimate human-animal relationship they were describing, and INVITING A BUNCH OF RANDOM GUYS FROM THE INTERNET TO YOUR BOSS'S FARM WHEN HE ISN'T HOME TO FUCK AND BE FUCKED BY SAID BOSS'S ANIMALS.

Two documentaries.
Punk: The Early Years - I didn't like it. Then again, I don't like anything that centers the punk universe squarely on the Sex Pistols and whatever incarnation of Vivienne Westwood's shop they happened to have footage of at the moment. It was nice seeing some concert footage, I guess. It was defnitely Anglocentric and I thought it left some really huge gaps. If it was called "British Punk: The Early Years", I might have felt differently.
Deliver Us From Evil (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deliver_Us_from_Evil_%282006_film%29): I liked this one a lot, but it was creepy as hell the way the priest talked about his history of child abuse/child rape as mildly as if he were reminiscing about the good old days. After being deported from the States, he is apparently wandering around Europe and reportedly still interacting with kids.

The Guyver 2: Dark Hero. Really enjoyed it.
My only complaint is that they stretched an hour and a half movie into over two hours.
There was one scene in particular that had me confused though:
The Guyver and a government agent are beating up and killing off the bad guys in order to catch the leader.
Then when one of the bad guys goes down, he turns into a weird lizard/fish thing for no reason whatsoever.
http://i678.photobucket.com/albums/vv150/dextire/Guyver2ani.gif
I guess he was turning into a Zoanoid, (a monster that can take human form) but he was the only one that changed after being killed.
Just had me scratching my head.

i can fake interest
when I lived in chicago, I had an extra/bit part in a movie he was starring in. The filming took place in the wee hours of the morning and freezing rain was coming down and it all fucking sucked, and they were treating the background actors like animals and we were soaked and cold and hungry and our little unimportant-people corral was right behind SLJ's trailer. So we got to see all of the catering stuff go up into there, like a big tray of brownies or something, and he didn't share :(
They fed us, but it was some soupy unidentifiable meat shit they called "stew" and cold mashed potatoes.

The other star of the movie was nice, if a bit odd.
I don't think I'd ever do it again. It was miserable, we were treated like shit, and even after I was recruited up the extra micro-infrastructure from no speaking to a speaking part, it only meant ten more dollars for the whole night, which was like $67 or something. Not worth it to be sleeted upon and feel like you're an unwitting part of some sort of modern day internment camp.
EDIT: also, the production assistant who had been making my life hell all night went off on me when I asked her where to return my props, so I left the expensive electronic one on a random chair in the holding area and took the cheap laminated paper one with me as a souvenir and secretly wished someone stole the other one to pay them back for being such jerks.

I expected it to be some crappy horrorcomedy with redneck humor, but it turned out to be a pretty decent homage to 80's horror. I really liked the fact that there was no CGI used at any point in the film. Thats propably one of the reasons there was a subtle Evil Dead vibe througout the movie.
The plot was somewhat original, the main character was likeable and acting was suprisingly good for a low-budget horrorflick. Robert Englund pretty much stole the show, though.
Worth a watch.

ip man 2 - donnie yen is a badass. nothing more needs to be said.
drunken tai chi - donnie yen was a badass in the 80's as well (more of a badass, actually, because it was before he had eyelid surgery and fixed his teeth), but the movie was just too goofy outside of the fight scenes.
once upon a time in china/once upon a time in china 2 - great fight scenes, but they were too few&farbetween. however, the subs were white and a lot of the scenes were light, so it was kind of hard to follow some scenes.

five across the eyes was like a wannabe blair witch. It was not good. It was shot with what looks like a cellphone cam in the dark interior of a van with several unknown actresses screeching so loud you can't make out a damn thing anyone is saying.

Maybe your dad thought it was a different movie.
I went to the movies once with my friend Brent and we thought we purchased tickets to this one movie. It was about a guy(maybe Sean Connery) who was lost in the wilderness for a long time and became savage. Then years later someone found him and brought him back to civilization. We thought it called something like savage nature or something.
We ended up getting tickets to Forces of Nature by mistake though. About 25 minutes into the movie we were like "Why is Sandra Bullock in this?"
In conclusion maybe your dad thought he put in Twilight...of the dark master. Which is a sweet movie.

So I did see Karate Kid finally
Three things I noticed while watching it.
Jaden Smith is a clone of Will Smith. How he moves, speaks, looks, his mannerisms. They all reminded me of Will Smith.
Jackie Chan can actually do a serious roll. There were some nuances to his character that were interesting and he pulled off well. I admit I was surprised. They really only had one action scene for him to do, everything else was him acting. I wasn't expecting it.
This was the loosest use of the word remake I have ever seen. Names were different, setting was different. Only thing that was the same was a kid was picked on till a master of martial arts saved him and teaches him to defend himself and then they go to a tournament.

There were a lot of little technical incongruities and historical inaccuracies (talking about what the North Koreans did during the war, for example, when the movie was set in the very early fifties) that just wore on me.
For the first 45 minutes or so, I felt like I was watching people reading a script. I mean, I could picture the script on the page as they were saying the lines; it seemed a little flat and contrived.
Also, I didn't think the twist was that big of a twist. Not long into it, it was sort of "ohhhh, okayyyy."

I hadn't known that it was a Scorsese film going into it, and I remember being surprised that it came out of him. I was like, "Scorsese? Really?!?"

I don't know if I've ever seen a Scorsese film that I actually liked.

I just watched Shutter Island. I like it. The end was a kind of a bummer but I still liked it. :\
Also watched The Book of Eli. Denzel kicked a lot of ass. Oldman as awesome as usual.

Watched 'The Spirit' last night, found myself wondering wtf was I thinking putting this on the queue. If you haven't seen it yet don't bother, there is plenty of hotness to go around (Scarlet Johansson, Eva Mendes, Jamie King)

I went to Karate Kid and spent most of it wandering back and forth from The A Team.
Neither of them were that bad, actually.

Today was the first time in almost a month that I had time to watch a movie.
So I made it count, and watched two awesome classic 80s monster movies: The Boogens; and The Dark Power. :)
The covers to entice you to watch:

I got "Precious" in the mail but haven't watched it yet. I get the gist of it.
My streaming netflix queue is full of kickass documentaries but I never get a chance to watch them :(

Book Of Eli
Meh. The action sequences and the Falloutesque scenery were outstanding, but the story itself was kinda lame. I liked The Road better.

I got roped into watching The Wolfman. A few interesting parts interspersed in a matrix of boring crap.
