The Rum Diary.

I think Johnny Depp just wanted to play Hunter S Thompson again. And he did, with the Hunter S Thompson voice and the Robert Downey Jr eyes. Also, Giovanni Ribisi sounded exactly like Red Green.

I read the novel in less time than it took the film version to get to the point. Not exaggerating there, even when you factor in that the movie wasn't actually as long as the 6 hours it felt like.

Although, I see that Giovanni Ribisi is going to play David Koresh and I will be all over that shit.

is the rum diaries even worth watching?

Kitsa
Feb 17th, 2012, 09:28 AM
It's worth reading, anyway.

I don't know, the movie just seemed like it was going on and on forever. It kind of made you conscious of how camera angles and shots were set up, and that was odd. Like you knew that they had just trooped down to the beach, set up, said their lines and went back to the hotel.

There were a couple of funny parts, but he was going for more of the "Hunter S Thompson is an intense and moral political activist" thing than the "Hunter S Thompson is a funny stoned-off-his-ass guy who proffers deadpan witticisms with a cigarette holder clenched in his teeth" thing, so the whole tone of the film was very different. It felt like he played him older, when the character was supposed to have been younger.

I think if we wait around long enough, he'll take on "Hell's Angels" too.

He took actors into his home to study him, and they came out aping him to the point where lots of other people found them to have become assholes. I've heard that about Bill Murray and Johnny Depp both, although I'm reserving judgement there. Probably you learn a lot living in Hunter S Thompson's basement and being privy to what went on in that head of his.

I always wanted to see Fear and Loathing with some of the actors they originally wanted when it was being pitched to different studios. I swear I read somewhere that they originally wanted Jack Nicholson to play Duke and Marlon Brando to play Gonzo. And Scorsese to direct it.

Matinee.
I expected a Cohen Brother-esque rise and fall story based on the life of a character based on fifties B-movie directors, based on the Netflix description. Instead I got a "ha-ha it's the fifties! OH NO THE COLD WAR!" kid's movie. Also John Goodman's head looked like it was going to sink into his neckrolls at any minute, like Atlantis falling into the sea.

The little references to b-movies and huge nod to William Castle were nice, though.

Also, I watched Mallrats again last night and it's prolly better than Clerks in many ways. The Volkswagen joke is perfect.

Also, I really liked Art School Confidential, but I can't exactly recall why. The plot and the satire and indemnification of the art school crowd were spot on, though.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. It's the trashiest movie I've seen in a while.

I was with it up until the out-of-nowhere sex scene. The leads didn't really have any sort of chemistry before that so I was like "wait when the hell did this become a thing?" My immediate summary of the situation was "hey, you got shot by a mystery gunman who could still be slumming around, let's fuck"

Mr. Brooks

Pretty good actually. Costner and William Hurt were outstanding in their roles. The sub-plots were a bit silly and not very believable, but I was very entertained the whole way through. Suprisingly, even Dane Cook managed to be not irritating. There are plans to make this a trilogy, and I really hope it happens.

John Carter - my son had been bugging me for weeks to see it, so I took him and two of his friends. It was OK, I guess, but I think that the original "Clash of the Titans" did the weird alien battle sequences better, stop-motion animation notwithstanding. Plus I found it hard to suspend my disbelief on the "Mars needs heroes" concept.

I went to see Hunger Games in a theater, mainly because I could (it was right across the street from Nationwide Arena, how much easier can you get) and to be fair when I continue to rip it up one side and down the other.

It's a very pretty movie. However, it's basically what I thought...pretty much exactly like Battle Royale and Running Man and Shirley Jackson's The Lottery and pretty much all others of the genre throughout time. Instead of Japanese stoicism-and-loyalty imagery, they just contrasted decadence with Depression-era poverty (think Sofia Coppola's take on Marie Antoinette with ripoffs of Dorothea Lange photos thrown in- as a matter of fact, in one establishing shot they directly imitated a Dorothea Lange image (http://faculty.evansville.edu/rl29/art105/img/lang_migrantmother.jpg)). Otherwise, it's all the same. Beat Takeshi is Woody Harrelson. They even had the specially trained ringers, the Careers who trained and volunteered, just like Kiriyama in BR.

I don't know. The woman who write this is, I've heard, a Hollywood screenwriter. If, as she claims, she never heard of BR (or Running Man, or even The Lottery, which I thought was in every high school English book) when she submitted the manuscript, that's just a poor educational background. But as I said, it's a pretty movie with pretty people. I've only read excerpts of the book so I can't say how far it departed from original intent. I'm guessing not far.

It's still better than Twilight, but I am pissed at it bring thrown about as a new thing and I'm irritated that its production blocked the American version of BR from being made (it put them in the position of looking like they were the copycats). However, that version might have sucked as bad as The Grudge, so maybe they saved us all.

I've been watching a lot of documentaries lately. LET'S RECAP:

The Thin Blue Line

Gotta respect the fact that this documentary got an innocent man out of a life sentence. Other than that, it was just ok.

Touching The Void

Holy shit. If you like survival stories, this one ranks up pretty damn high on my list. It was amazing to see how a person can get out of a really REALLY hopeless situation. Kept me on the edge of my seat.

Dear Zachary

The best documentary I never want to see again. Heavy subject matter emotionally. I am a manly man (anonymously on the internet), but this one almost made me cry. There are a lot of twists in this quite disturbing crime story, so don't read anything about it beforehand if you are going to see it.

Into The Abyss

The latest documentary by Werner Herzog. It revolves around the death penalty and covers a senseless crime and how it affected people connected to it. I liked Grizzly Man better, but this was still pretty entertaining. Not really groundbreaking in any way.

Yeah, that one is pretty awesome. I've had the guy who played the Pimp (in the first one) on Facebook for what seems like forever, and he's always posting pictures and things from conventions and shit. It's amazing that he's managed to milk his roles from those two movies for this long. Good for him.

yesterday in school i watched:
GASLAND - a documentary about fracking

then i got home and happened to watch:
KING CORN - a documentary about industrial agriculture and the prevalence of corn in amurika's diet

and i've seen a bunch of these liberal environmental documentaries and i always get this weird feeling. "i agree wholeheartedly with what you're saying but i can't stand the way you're saying it."

Tadao
Apr 27th, 2012, 12:00 PM

Aaarg
Apr 27th, 2012, 12:32 PM
oh no in the case of king corn it's just two boston frat boys hanging out with iowa farmers and the whole thing reeks of "i live off a trust fund." in one scene they are excited because they register the fact that they're growing a little bit of corn and they get some government cheez because, well, subsidies.

they think it's pretty cool that they're getting government money "just for growing some corn." as if they don't realize that that's how industrial farmers make a living.

i'm ok with "you gotta save the world" stuff, i just hate people. haha.

again, ideas i agree with. being told to me by people like morgan spurlock and michael moore and richie cornboy and boring tryhards across the country.

Finally got around to seeing Mystic River.

It was great. And that is all I have to say about that.

Also, I watched the first Matrix movie again. The last time I saw it was something like 10 years ago. Time has not been gentle with this one. The effects still work (they are not impressive anymore, though), but there are a lot of weird stuff happening I didn't really notice last time. Like an elevator exploding for some reason and the "good guys" keep killing innocent people, even though they want to liberate them or something. And who can forget Keanu Reeves, who is so wooden I really don't know why he keeps getting work. Anyways, The Matrix is still entertaining and hell of a lot better than the awful and unnecessary sequels.

Prometheus

Spoiler free opinion. The first half of the movie was a bag full of amazing sci-fi goodness, that gave me an erection that would not please a woman. My erections are like that, sadly. Anyways. The movie kinda fell apart in the second half and there were some things that made no sense plotwise, and some of the characters behaved very oddly. It seemed like there was a huge chunk of the movie left on the cutting room floor. I would approve a director's cut version of this.

So, in short: for sci-fi fans this is a must see, just for the visuals alone. Enjoyable movie, that sadly does not live up to the hype.

a scientist is killed by a mutant snake thing which escapes and is never seen again, and the things may or may not have killed the other engineers/space jockeys, it's not explained very well

so one guy is killed by acid blood spraying on his face, but he comes back to life w/ super strength and kills people for no reason for other than typical horror movie type scares i guess

lisbeth salander gives birth to a squid, seriously, a squid
but the squid baby escapes and grows into a giant squid which doubles as a giant facehugger (wtf?), (which i sort of get since an early design for the fh was basically an octopus, but it's a little ridiculous) which causes the birth of a prototype xeno

the space jockey race hate humans for some reason (guess that'll get explained in the sequel, if there is one and if not, guess they're just a bunch of space jerks)

Everyone in the movie is pretty stupid, though. Like...when the first alien thing appears and one guy is all "THERE THERE BABY IT'S ALRIGHT HERE I'M GONNA GO PET IT NOW OH WOW IT'S BREAKING MY ARM DAMN ALIENS USED MY LOVE OF PETTING ALIENS AGAINST ME." It seemed like they just did shit for the sake of entertaining the audience as opposed to being, well, smart. Same with the alien stuff. That one biological poisony thing seemed to work on some kind of "whateverthefuck" logic because it has two different effects on two different people, then the final humanoid alien thing at the end just went postal on the humans for no perceived reason, even though it's supposed to be highly intelligent.

I just saw Moonrise Kingdom and it's very good! Wes Anderson toned down the snootiness

Saw the Avengers last night. It was pretty good for a hack and slash flick, actually better than I thought it would be.

Promethius is 3d. It was bad ass and the 3d was much better than I was expecting. I just didn't understand what that shit in the jars was. At the start it looked that one dude drank it to break down his DNA to add the spark of life to earth but later its responsible for accelerated evolution?? Still a rather kick ass movie though.

The Raid: Redemption

This is how an action movie is made. Awesome choreography, brutal violence, perfectly paced and constantly intense. Best action movie since Taken.

Brave in 3d. The 3d gave me a wicked headache.

It was good, I guess. Those movies always seem way intense and sad for the kid-audience.

Kids aren't retarded. They know concepts like death/violence enough that they can handle it the way Disney has always portrayed it. I was actually more surprised by the buttshots.

As for Brave, the animation is pretty phenomenal. They make settings so realistic these days that you'd swear they were real. The story was pretty weak for a Pixar film, but still leaps and bounds beyond shit like Madagascar or Ice Age. I know when footage was first being shown years ago, everyone was saying this would be "Pixar's first mature cartoon", which is kind of the wrong way to approach it; it's still a family film, but it's a little more loose in regards to razor sharp weapons hurling through the air.

Moonrise Kingdom and Prometheus. Moonrise was awesome, Prometheus was alright but very pretty. When I was watching it though I couldn't stop thinking about Jay Sherman's student film.

J Edgar. Leonardo did a really effective job as the former FBI director. Judi Dench was awesome as was Naomi Watts. I thought the Clint Eastwood-directed bio was a bit easy on the allegedly gay and definitely dishonest Hoover, but it was a worthwhile watch anyway. Two thumbs up. :rock
