I've been playing a whole lot of Happy Wars. I didn't expect myself to get hooked on a free to play xbox live game with childish looking graphics, but it really did charm me into liking it. I play both co-op against the computer and team vs team. Both are fun. I can see the game getting old in a while, but by then something new to play will be out.

I finally beat RE6 last night. It was okay, nothing really special. Seem just like any other third person shooter out these days.

It was pretty long though, like too long. It was like it over-stayed its welcome.

A friend gave me Max Payne 3 to play the other day.

I can´t play that game. It´s just too horrible. Since I´ve written out all my rage over that past days, all that´s left is regret. Regret that I had to witness the literal Fall of Max Payne as a game-series. It´s so so bad. I actually want to spit at this game and the lead writer for slaughtering one of the best-written and atmospheric franchises of all time.

I think about the only thing that could be worse would be Planescape Torment - Mort's Whacky Kart-Racing.

Anyway, concering games that are actually fun: I played a bit of Chivalry the past few days and it´s a hell of a lot of fun. There´s a lot of tactics going on, even if you just want to chop some knight´s head off :)

I thought Max Payne 3 was very good. Some annoyances here and there and the storyline was pretty lame, but the again, the original two were no masterpieces either when it comes down to the story. Let's be honest here, the point of Max Payne has always been the action. The cheesy film noir gave it a nice touch and James McCaffrey's whiskey breath monologues didn't hurt either, but the awesome gun-ballet is the main thing why people play these. And on that front, Max Payne 3 did not dissapoint. And the character was pretty much the same as before, only a bigger loser than before.

Then again, maybe you miss the the days when Max Payne storyline had class. Like the time you fight a satan worshipper in a hawaiian shirt or when you meet the Finito brothers. FINITO BROTHERS. MY GOD.

I thought the story was MUCH better than Max Payne 2 was. I play them both back to back right before it came out, and while Max Payne 1 will always have a nice big soft spot in my heart, Fall of Max Payne was pretty lame to me. Not bad, just not as much fun as the first or third.

It also made sense to me that Max would turn into a drunken slob of a person after all of that. The game did a good job of messing him up, and then straightening him out.

It isn't--there are plenty of really fun sequences. I love how they finally swear. It was kinda stupid how up to this point, the language was pretty tame, even though the characters were in these fucked up situations. Also, they frequently call attention to some of the conventions, like the really tough boss enemies returning time and time again. I thoroughly enjoyed Jake yelling something along the lines of "Just fucking DIE ALREADY, you piece of shit!" during one of the boss fights.

Oh, and FIST FIGHT with one of the bosses was pretty badass. Cheesy, but so, so entertaining.

I can't muster up the energy for Resident Evil anymore. :( It started when I was waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting for 5 to come out, then my friend bought this new game called Dead Space.

I borrowed it from him and everything about it blew me away. Then I went to play RE5 some months later and found that not only was it definitely not as scary, it was also more frustrating than I remembered. Dead Space 2 was an improvement in some ways and a let down in others, but I still dug it quite a bit. If I can grab RE6 on sale and get in some discounted schlock, then I can't really be disappointed.

I think the biggest problem I have is time. I just don't wanna get into something that I know I'd be lukewarm towards, especially since a lot of games have been letting me down lately, regardless of reviews positive or negative.

Those made me smirk, but it's not really as cheesy as most of the lines like older games had. I thought RE6 wasn't as bad as people have been making it out to be, it was okay, but it just really didn't feel like a Resident Evil game. Leon wasn't really on his A game and Chris was pretty boring this time around for me. Jake was pretty fun though. After playing Ada's campaign the whole story just seemed even more silly and pointless. Definitely at least worth a rental, maybe a purchase when it get's down to around $15-$20 used.

Also don't worry too much, Zomboid. I picked up Medal of Honor Warfighter and Borderlands 2. Now I can't criticize anyone's taste about anything anymore.

I like playing as a medic in DayZ.

One time while I was patching up a bunch of noobs in a barn, the admins on my favorite server came after me and started shooting at the building continuously with L85s (thermal-scope assault rifles, i.e. endgame loot) for about 5 minutes until they picked the poor little guys with their double-barrel shotguns and crossbows off one by one, then killed me; I didn't have any stuff they wanted, so they hid my body so that I couldn't run back and re-arm. I was pretty irritated!

Tonight, I noticed that they were gathered in a channel on the teamspeak server that had no password, so I settled in, started chatting them up, then asked if I could roll with them in their vehicle convoy. They actually let me in; I can't imagine how fucking stupid you'd have to be. They even gave me a DMR! (Semi-auto sniper rifle; two-shot kill, 20 bullets as fast as you can fire them.) So I rode with them, making idle conversation, looting buildings, helping them kill zombies, and casually dismissing the way they were using their admin powers to locate more vehicles and find players to kill, all the while laughing softly with a huge grin plastered all over my face. When the time was right and we were all parked and preparing to storm a high-traffic city, I casually walked up to the ringleader and shot him in the face about 15 times, then jumped into his car and drove off while everyone in the channel started freaking the fuck out. I just started laughing, like I was Char Aznable fresh from leading Garma Zabi into a barrage of artillery fire.

It would have been a lot more awesome if he hadn't immediately banned me, but I think I'm done playing DayZ for a while because nothing I do in the game from this point forward is ever going to be as fucking amazing as what transpired tonight. I really wish I could have recorded it.

I love this game, guys, you should be playing it!

The switching members in and out of your party instantaneously during battle is sort of like a prototype version of the paradigm system from 13, but I like it a lot better since it gives you a reason to actually use all the characters instead of just building a superstar tagteam of the most broken / least annoying people.

FF10 was really good and I don´t care if the story is stupid and Tidus looks like a little girl. The combat was quick and a lot of fun :) 10s Combat with 9s cast...that would be nice.

I like Tidus because whenever someone pulls some bullshit jargon out of their asses and is all like "WE HAVE TO STOP SIN FROM BLOWING UP THE CLOISTER OF THE HYMN OF THE HIGH WALKER" I'm like "what the fuck does that mean?" and pretty much on cue Tidus'll go "what the fuck does that mean?"

1. She is killed off by Sephiroth and let´s be honest here, dude´s cool when you´re about 15 so it´s hard to stay mad at the guy for long.

2. I clearly remember being super upset because I wasted my fucking time with her. Meaning, I spent time leveling her up and bam, she´s dead. Is ANYONE using Aeris these days? I mean, you know she´s gonna die, why would you use her when all Characters are basically the same anyway?

Guitar Woman

Yeah, for some reason everyone seems to confuse "angsty beyond reason" with "fucking batshit bonkers." Cloud's freakout scenes and his connection to Jenova were some of the creepiest shit when I was a kid.

Sperg post incoming, also spoilers.

Cloud is awesome because he's basically a weakling pretending to be something far greater than himself, trying really hard to come across as some aloof cocky badass to everyone else, and basically living out a power fantasy. Not unlike oh say for example YOU, you with your skinny ass sitting on that couch stuffing cheetos into your face and going "huh-huh, look at me, I'm totally this spikey-haired badass anime guy, I'm so fuckin' cool." The game likes to play with the connection between player and player character, and assumes that you'll take it for granted that Cloud's your perfect manly avatar; they use this to start fucking with you early on, which aside from incredibly classy humor is the point of the whole cross-dressing segment.

Then ages later the Zack bomb gets dropped and you're like "holy shit I really am like this guy, I'm so fucking lame." Or, you would do if this was MGS2, but unlike Raiden Cloud is still a suitably heroic figure, and not a fucking moron, so it's not really that big of a middle finger; rather than pissing me off and calling me garbage like Kojima did, FF7 uses the same kind of weird meta devices to make the protagonist that much more endearing. Cloud's a dude any escapist-fantasy types can identify with; he even says something about being "master of my own illusionary world." That sounds like a video game to me. Another thing that helps is that they don't shove all this in your face with shit like "YOUR NAME IS ON RAIDEN'S DOGTAGS HOOOOOOOLY FUUUUUCK" when you probably just entered in "Boners McGee" anyway; FF7 treats its player-grilling more like a series of brief meta shoulder-nudges; it's subtle, subdued, something that isn't spelled out for you and that you can sit reflecting on after you turn the game off, if you're so inclined.

That there is another reason the game is great: it knows how to be subtle, which is something we'll pretty much never see in a video game ever again. You can joke all you want about Cloud and Sephiroth compensating for something and how their anime hair is overblown and ridiculous, but apart from that (Nomura's fault, natch) the game's full of world-building visual cues and optional lines of dialogue that you can finish the whole game without ever seeing, but if you take the time to seek them out they make it a much more robust experience. Rather than shoving all the info about this universe into the player's face while they're strapped in and forced to watch Clockwork Orange style, they just sorta let you loose and expect your curiosity to motivate you. A lot of information about the state of the world is merely implied; ex. there are cars in this world, but no roads outside Midgar. Why? If you look at the state of most towns you visit, the answer is because pretty much everyone outside is just too dirt fucking poor to afford one, and it'd be a waste of money to lay highways that nobody will ever use all over the place. Shit like that. I think that's what pretentious people mean when they talk about "interactive storytelling," along with using interactivity to get a point across. One moment that comes to mind is during the Nibelheim flashback, after Sephiroth's lost his shit and is lecturing Cloud about the ancients and how he was produced; at the end of this scene, which has a soundtrack consisting of a looping bell and bass-drum styled after a heartbeat, Sephiroth goes "I'm going to see my mother." As soon as he starts walking away and the player gains control again, the music blasts full-on into Sephiroth's theme and shocks the shit out of you; you instinctively know something really, really bad is about to happen and desperately sprint out of the room after him. It's a very frantic and terrifying moment even though Cloud has guaranteed plot armor to the end of the flashback, but it wouldn't be if the game just cut to the next scene with no input from you. Mind, it's still a very cutscene-heavy game to be sure, and it's far from the best example of an interactive story, but it makes up for that by having a really great, fast-moving, character-driven plot that just kicks ass.

[/sperg]

FF7 is a fucking awesome game no matter what anyone says about it. Unironically my favorite game ever.

Did you also know Final Fantasy 8 is infinitely more enjoyable if you assume Squall is killed at the end of Disc 1? Everything else is a three-disc-long dying dream where tons of retarded silly nonsensical Alice-in-Wonderland bullshit happens, Squall becomes the most important person on the planet and effortlessly steals the love interest of his rival despite the fact that she thought he was a prick before, and all the while everyone's all like "Oh man Squall you're so fucking cool, swoon" because his subconscious is trying to give him the satisfaction and catharsis he never found in his lifetime. And since Squall's a raging egotistical jackass the whole thing turns into his magical adventures through mary-sue land where everything is perfect for him and he is super-awesome. I bet that's why the combat in that game is so broken; it's too easy on purpose because why would Squall want to dream about getting his ass kicked at any point?

I want to hope that's what the FF8 creative team intended, because otherwise they're a bunch of fucking idiots who write with their asses.

Iīm absolutely sure they didnīt intend this. I mean come on, you know Anime, writing there is BAD, really bad most of the time. Same goes for the fact that there are no roads outside Midgar. They just wanted to make a Tech-City, thatīs all there is to it, there was no deeper thought there.

Still, very interesting things to think about.

So, it's been a few days, and I'm honestly kinda impressed with some of the WiiU's functions. Like...it has a twitter/message board type system where people can just draw and write shit for total strangers to read and reply to. And you can "follow" and "like" stuff just like on the real internet :eek It's all heavily moderated, but I managed to draw a picture of Link's face as he's orgasming to the LttP music in NintendoLand and it hasn't been taken down yet. Now I have a bunch of 13 year olds following me so they can see more stupid drawings :lol

Also, NintendoLand is legitimately good, because unlike WiiSports they decided to actually build games and not say "just flail your arms and pretend you're boxing". Some of them are kinda meh (Ninja Stars) but the Metroid game is fucking sweet, and the Pikmin and Luigi's Mansion games are really fun when everyone's drunk (and when everyone's sober). A lot of the games are real hard too. Only complaint is that it's probably only worth half of what Nintendo's selling it for, but most people are getting it for free with the Deluxe bundle. Also, it needs leaderboards.

New Mario U is also surprisingly good. Kinda bland looking but the levels get really hard. This one looks like it's more designed for single player though because it's not as open and empty like the Wii one.

I think this is the least amount of times Nintendo hardware has made me smack my head since the Super Nintendo, to be perfectly honest. It just needs more original software and not just ports.

I just finished Metro 2033 after powering through it over two nights.

I have to say that I'm incredibly impressed with it. It's pretty much a linear STALKER, gussied up a bit. There were a few plotholes, major ones at that, but I loved a lot of it and felt better sneaking around in this game than I did in Dishonored. Maybe it's because I'm not a superhero in 2033 and am not invulnerable with crazy teleportation abilities. I dunno. But I can say that it's good enough to get me excited for the sequel, if it's ever released.

At the end, I was left wondering more about Khan and the Dark Ones and the Anomalies and why they all seemed connected. Or perhaps there was no connection and Khan was just a philosophy buff.

Also, I got the impression from a lot of people that it was difficult, but at the end I had around 600 military grade rounds and nothing to spend them on, as I'd already picked up the biggest, bestest weapons already.

There were some tense times when I was low on ammo, though. My favorite part was when I had to sneak through a Communist checkpoint into the Nazi section of the Metro and I had limited ammo. Not that I could use it, anyway, as the enemies were everywhere and my weapons weren't silenced. Everything except for my throwing knives, which I launched from the dark at unsuspecting spinal columns. The thunk noise as it hits a soldier the back will never get old.

Been playing Black Ops 2 (very nice) and Hitman Absolution for the past few days. The Contracts-Mode of Absolution is a little bit genius.

You have to play the Hit to create the Hit which is a gorgeous way of ensuring that you canīt create impossible contracts because you have to play your contract yourself first. How does it work? Super simple: You just pick one of the 15+ Maps, walk around and mark someone you want to be the target (up to 3 possible). Then you kill the target and the game registers what disguise you used and what kill-method. Now you can choose to mark two more people or use one of the exits of the map to finish your contract. Depending on how you killed people (hid the bodies, used disguises, detected or nor), your mission is created and the bounty is set up.

Really really simple and cool method of keeping the game alive. The nice thing is, you see this dude that doesnīt move from his fucking post and you check your briefing, saying you have to kill him with an axe but how the fuck are you gonna that? It HAS to be possible, because someone had to do it to create the contract :)

hitman absolution is kinda gay

if u restart from a checkpoint it respawns everybody, even the ppl who you killed before you got to the checkpoint.
i got a silenced weapon in one level. finished the level and at the end he drives to the next level. the next level begins and i no longer have the silenced weapon. :/
90% of the game so far is running from/through stuff

seriously the more i think about this game the more i think its gay
so far there haveonly been like.. 2 hits.
both were so easy that its a joke. Pretty sure i got the highest rating on both of the only missions where i had to kill someone without even trying. Both times they basicallywalked into a room by themselves. :\
the restof the game was just running through shit or trying to sneak through an area where there's not even the goal of killing a person. wtf. did the makers of this game ever even PLAY A HiTMAN gAME?

seriously this game is a piece of shit fuck videogames now adays

theres literally levels where u dont kill anyone and dont have to sneak or anything. one level all i had to do was talk to a bartender. it was like a tiny ass space and the level ends immediately after. basically all u do is sabotage some electricity panel and it startsa bar fight which is almost cool and then you just walk through the level and realize that the entire thing was pointless. whatever i hate whoever made this game.
the level immediately after that is a gunshop and again you dont have to kill anyone or really do anything there and its basically another tiny space. BUT YOU CAN GET ACHIEVEMENTS IF YOU DO IT DIFFERENTLY OR TOUCH DIFFERENt WeAPONS
WOW. BET YOU CANT WAIT TO WALK THROUGH THIS TINY TEN BY TEN SPACE WITHOUT KILLIng ANYONE SLIGHTLY DIFFERENTLY THAN THE LAST TIME
CANT WAIT TO GET THAT ACHIEVEMENT FOR LOSING THE SHOOTING CONTEST.
THEN ILL GET THE ONE FOR WINNING IT AND THE ONE FOR TOUCHING A GUN THAT IVE ALREADY TOUCHED BEFOR
make that a cutscene you stupid fucks

I play it on the hard hard hard difficulty and it's needlessly hard. So I turned it down. The levels are far smaller than in Blood Money, but Chinatown comes close to capturing the same thing.

But it's a fundamentally different game and should be judged on its own terms. I kept my expectations low and came out finding a few small things in the campaign that were nice. But the contracts mode is amazing. In fact, I get the feeling that they just designed giant playgrounds for the contracts mode and put in a story in the last ten minutes before it shipped.

kahljorn
Nov 24th, 2012, 03:13 PM
i get the feeling that this game was designed by retards. "giant playgrounds"? lol. thelevels are like the sizeof my house.

chinatown is the gayest level. you play through 30 levels of running from thecops orw/e and then you get that piece of shit. if that level makes you happy than you have a serious problem. how much space is that level? like, 200 square feet? my house is probably bigger than that level. and the whole thing is stupid contrived. it's so straightforward its a joke. YOU CAN GO LEFT AND KILL HIM THIS WAY. OR GO RIGHT AND KILL HIM THIS WAY. i got silent assassin on that level first try and i wasn't even trying. same thing in the vixen bar. they just both wander off by themselves. SAME THINg WIth THE OTHER CHINAtOWN level. what the fuck. thats not a hitman game. or i should say itsa hitman gmewithout ass strong the illusion of beinga hitman game

fuck this fundamentally different game judged on its own terms shit. thats just an excuse for it being a piece of shit game. everytimei play it i lose interest within a few minutes.
why does this gunshop level exist? its pointless. you can't do anything important there. none of the guns you take will probably carry over to the next level. its only there forgay ass achievements. SHOOT THE DUCKS. LOSE THESHOOTInG COMPETITION. DONT LOSE THE SHOOTING COMPETITION fuck that. those aren't even cool challenges. and thats like half the game. gay ass challenges on gay ass levels that just have me thinking, "WelL There WILL PROBABLY BE A HIT ON THE neXT LEVEL" and then its chinatown the shoebox level. that level shouldve called it little trouble in tiny china.

ive never beensomad at a videogame before. i guess this generation of videogame makers is just horrible.

I kept my expectations low and came out finding a few small things in the campaign that were nice.yea, its got some cool stuffi guess. like bullet time.
yep bullet time sure is great. thats what we need is more games with bullet time. im glad when i pirated this game that i was pirating max payne 3.

you know what this game remindsme of? one of those ADVENTURE GAMeS where everything is basically laid out for you and sure u can do different stuff to see some different cutscenes but basicallyitsallthe same. also sometimes u get to shoot stuff@! WOWWWW

yea the second part of china town was almost fun. i was like, man, im gonna bash this dudes head in with a sledgehammer! and i did that and it was almostcool. then i found that guy kicking the other guy. then i sabotaged the guy at the gas thing. which was super easy because of the way they designed checkpoints so that they reset the entire level, so all i had to do was go there, save at checkpoint reload so the chef who can somehow spot cops isnt there, sabotage the gas thing then run to the second guy who was kicking the other guy off by himself in an easily accessible alley.

You've yet to murder everyone in Chinatown silently with the katana and the Chipmunk suit, though.

That's another thing - the levels themselves are filled with these grim, dark, hilarious things and none of that ever translates into the cutscenes and the story. And it hasn't been that way in any Hitman game, as a matter of fact. I get the feeling like they don't know what it should be and part of it is self-aware that it should be a fun game while another part isn't.

I'm playing the game like a solo sneaking mission. When I said Dishonoured should be more like Hitman, this wasn't the game I had in mind. So far, I like this Hitman more, honestly. I have a lot of problems with Dishonoured that still exist, although the level design is unparalleled in that game. As a murder simulator, it's much better.

you know what i realized what is really wrong with hitman. and it is the level design but not just because its small. ive read they didnt want disguises to be like godmode when you find the best disguise (which is dumb cuz from what i remember in hitman bloodmoney people would be on to you if u stood around too long in front of the wrong people in the wrong disguise). so hey here's an idea dont make disguises that make you have god mode and don't make disguises easy to get. or hey some guards are more perceptive/something than others
problem solved.
how was that hard to think up? just have lots of different disguises and each one has some kind of weakness. maybe some characters even know each other so when you try to sneak past jimmy as his brother john it doesn't work and hey you could discover this type of information through the retardely scripted conversations that are everywhere.

I've ben drawing on Miiverse more than I've been playing WiiU games. And I've been playing a lot of WiiU games. ZombiU is kinda like Dark Souls/Demon's Souls, which is neat, though the combat's way too shallow and ammo is practically nonexistant. Tekken Tag 2 basically the superior version of that game, with the extra modes and DLC characters from the get go. Mighty Switch Force looks waaaaaaay nicer on the WiiU than on the 3DS, though I do miss the 3D effects. And again, NintendoLand is way more fun than it has any right to be (hard too).

But the most important thing is that the Raving Rabbids message board has been taken over and is now unofficially a Willem Dafoe community:

Hitman fans are just very defensive of their niche game. This probably seems like they're throwing it all out the window by trying to capture a wider audience. All I know is if the franchise can survive the abortion that was Hitman: Contracts, it'll be able to handle this in stride as well.

Dr. Boogie

What they had said in the PC Gamer article, and what I agree with, is that the nex installment felt like a more limited experience. Fewer ways to solve assassinations, fewer ways to use weapons and tools, and fewer ways to use disguises effectively. The bottom line being that it's a decent stealth game, but a crummy Hitman game.

At this point, though, I don't really expect good things from old series revived for modern gamers. You've got outliers like Xcom and Deus Ex: HR, but for the most part, it's just crap with a familiar label.

First and foremost, new team, don't put your shitty story at the forefront. At most, these games need a little background on who you're killing and where you are, and maybe a little extra to bookend the whole experience.

Ah well, I´ve come to terms with the fact that they don´t make games like they used to but that´s okay, I can always go back and play the gems from back in the day like Torment, FF6 or something like that :)

Speaking of modern formulaic games, 6 hours into Far Cry 3. Way more fun than 2. Still very gamey with the bullshit pack-crafting...the only way I can explain it is if I assume that Jason is some kind of Diva, refusing to store his money in anything less than tiger-fur-wallets :lol Grenade Pouch? GOTTA be made from Dingo pelt, what will the other kids think of me if I show up with a cowleather pouch?!

edit: Oh right, it came out today in the EU. Is it good? I have it preordered.

OxBlood

My regular shop tends to have games a few days earlier...which is why I give them my money ;)

I really like it so far. The story is very well presendet and immersive, Jason is NOT a silent protagonist, Vaas is tremendously cool as a villain because he´s so volatile, the weapons feel good and make sense...

If I had to say something negative it would be that the performance on the consoles is not as good as it should be. Apparently the 360 is tearing like mad at times and both versions have a sub-par framerate as far as I can tell.
Apart from that, it has the same samey structure all big Ubisoft Titles have, it tends to become repetitive, the game is, as AC3 was, a huge collectathon. Thankfully, the game tells you when you get a reward for something, you know exactly how many letters you have to find to get a weapon unlock, etc.

That said, gameplay is a lot of fun, the whole feeling of unfairness from 2 is gone as Enemies are not all-seeing and all-smelling. The game makes it very clear that it wants you to sneak but if you want to shot everything up, it lets you do that too, no problem, you just get more XP for silent close quarter-kills, kinda like Deus Ex HR did it.

The skill-system is a mixed bag at first, as is the crafting system. You start out with very limited carrying capabilities and you have to upgrade step by step. Though I´m 6 hrs in and I´ve maxed almost everything. The last tier of something is always unlocked by a hunting-quest that has you kill a special animal with a specific weapon.

Killing shit gives you XP which gives you Skillpoints. How many Skill-Tiers you have is dictated by the main story, so my advice is to do some main missions right away. They start off easy and tutorial-esque and after a while, you get the second tier with a lot of cool skills like special takedowns. Knife someone, then take his knife and throw it at another dude. Or arm his grenade and kick him into his buddies, stuff like that.

Lastly, the plants and syringes. There´s 5 types of plants (red, green, blue, white, yellow) from which you can craft...well, potions basically that let you breathe underwater, see enemies or animals, scare animals away or become fireproof, all kinds of things. Doing missions and challenges unlock more recipes. Pretty cool stuff, though you will spend a lot of time in the menu, mixing up your near-paranormal potions :D

All in all, I´m impressend and very pleased so far.

I downloaded Ninja Gaiden 3: Good Edition for the Wii U. It's the first Ninja Gaiden game I've played since the NES one, so I really never played the newer ones.

Yea...so...it reminds me a LOT of Metroid Other M. Like...how did anyone expect these guys to make a good Metroid game? Because the engine and scenarios feel almost identical. I will say, it works better for an action game like Ninja Gaiden than Metroid, but it's still not great.

Also, I've been trading drawings and speedruns with the WayForward staff on the Mighty Switch Force Miiverse. I love that game, and Wayforward are bros. It was cool seeing them "Yeah" my request for a Mischief Makers sequel :love

Yeah, Other M was literally Ninja Gaiden without swords and shit.

I gave Planetside 2 a shot. You can tell it's a Freemium game because all the default guns are fucking garbage (especially the sniper rifle, jesus christ) and it crashes every time I try to close it.

Hahaha, oh wow. You're wrong about that, boyo.

The default guns are pretty great. The guns you unlock are never a straight upgrade either. You have to pick and choose which is best for your play style. New Conglomerate's default Sniper Rifle is also one of the best in the entire game compared to what the other factions start out with.

I'm currently trying to play through Far Cry and Far Cry 2 so I can start on Far Cry 3. I know they're not connected in any way story wise, but I wanted to see the whole series.

It takes a little while to get used to. What you need to do is go to each sector that needs to be conquered or defended from another faction. There a LOT of people with a lot of things going on. Hey shitlords, guess what shouldn't get the ability to spam instant kill attacks with a 50/50 success rate? The final boss with over 6 million hitpoints, in the game where you lose if your party leader dies! FUCK!

Fuck you Final Fantasy 13. Fuck you too SquareEnix. I have diligently sat through your aggressively horrible game design and fucking acrobatically insane plot for 60 hours, and this is how you end things? By shitting on my face and calling me a whore when I restart your retarded boss for the 5 billionth time because the RNG decided to be a cunt again?

I am legitimately fucking angry at this game now. You people who played for 5 hours and quit to complain about corridor hiking, you have no idea how fucking bad FF13 actually is. Example-wise, did you know this game somehow manages to have an objectively worse villain than FF8 did? If bran flakes were personified, they would literally be Barthandelus! Plot cohesion? What the fuck is that? We at SquareEnix have resolved to break our own plot's internal logic at least two times a cutscene! Character development? That means we spontaneously change everyone's personalities and motivations when it's convenient for the plot, right? You want sidequests? In an RPG? Well, ok, here: just do this same one over and over again about 70 fucking times, that oughtta be fine.

There is no excuse for this kind of incompetence from a multi-million dollar production. What the fuck did they even spend all that money on? Because it sure as shit wasn't non-mongoloid script writers or actual level designers!

The real tragedy here is that it could have been great. I have no fucking idea how SE managed to take what should have been a relatively simple, visceral story about freedom and choice and turn it into... that, I guess they just have an unparalleled ability to make everything they touch turn to absolute shit.

Seriously. FUCK. >:

Phoenix Gamma
Dec 23rd, 2012, 01:37 AM
They spent most of the budget on the graphics. The reason it's so linear is because that would require more graphics. Plus, it's not like JRPGs really offer much deviance from the main story; open worlds are really just illusions of freedom with one or two side dungeons for loot.

FF13's structure really didn't bother me that much (FFX was just as linear and anyone who says otherwise is a liar or hasn't played that game recently). I just didn't like the pacing (if the tutorial ended and grand pulse were introduced maybe twice as quickly, it wouldn't be so bad).

And if you're expecting a good story from Square, don't. FF12's development hell scared away most of the talented staff after executives went and stuck their dicks in the potato salad. Most of the writers and creative directors moved on to better companies. For what it's worth, I thought the cast had potential and the writers just never fully realized it. I'd say they're trying to realize it now through the sequels, but it seems more like they're just dumping all the extra assets they spent money on; FFXIII-2 ends in a cliffhanger and got jacked up with DLC, and Lightning Returns really doesn't look very promising. Meanwhile, VersusXIII is in limbo because Tetsuya Nomura locked himself in a clothing store in Shibuya and is doing aaaaall the cocaine.

Plus, it's not like JRPGs really offer much deviance from the main story; open worlds are really just illusions of freedom with one or two side dungeons for loot.

Yeah, but they at least try to make it interesting linearity. Which would you rather have in a story dungeon, a massive phallic skyscraper building full of incompetent employees, horrifying experimental abominations and evil executives, or a fucking 5-mile highway through some glowing forest? In older FFs there's puzzles to solve, actual levels that you have to consciously navigate, sidequests that aren't just "go here and kill this thing," etc. I think 13 had exactly one puzzle, and the solution was to turn around and go back the way you came.

I went out of my way to unlock Chocobos and the Titan boss-rush arena just to add some variety to how fucking empty and monotonous Pulse is, and I did both of these things by grabbing the next statue's tit then going and killing the thing it told me to for about 4 hours. Granted, Chocobos in this game are awesomely useful... because they let you move to the next thing you need to kill twice as fast.

I mean, fuck, we've gone from the second half of FF6 to "here, run down this hallway and kill things. Now there is a big open field, but all you can do is run around and kill things. We only included this part so we could say the game 'opens up after a while.'"

I was willing to forgive all of that and an abomination of a plot because 13 actually had great, challenging, strategic combat, but now that the ideal way to kill the final boss seems to be "slap on the 30% death resistance amulet and sacrifice a virgin to the RNG," I guess rewarding strategy and skill are out the window as well. What you're supposed to do with enemies that use insta-kills is have a Sentinel draw their fire away from the party leader, but Orphan can't be provoked, so a class with a niche use at best before is now completely pointless.

You mean nothing to me now.

I...don't remember putting on an amulet? I just remember using buffs and debuffs.

In any case, I think Final Fantasy as a whole is a pretty poor example of role playing games, and I have no idea why people get so worked up over them. It's no use throwing hissy fits over a franchise that had maybe two or three decent entries before going full retard. Getting mad at Square for making meh RPGs that cater to their mindless fanbase is like getting mad at Call of Duty for making meh FPSs that cater to a mindless fanbase. There are better games out there and you don't have to play the popular franchise just because it's popular.

Really, once I started digging into stuff like SMT, FF games just feel like they're made for children...which they are...

Also? Why are Final Fantasy games called Role Playing Games? You don't make any decisions; you just watch the characters make the decisions themselves.

Guitar Woman
Dec 23rd, 2012, 04:08 AM
you don't have to play the popular franchise just because it's popular.

Final Fantasy was a staple of my childhood and I count 6 and especially 7 among my favorite games of all time, so I guess I just want them to be that good again. I know they won't, but what really pisses me off is that they genuinely could if idiots weren't in charge of them. FF13 is one long string of offensively wasted potential, and that's depressing.

I also really want to rag on the ending. If I understood right, the bad guy basically wants the party to go and kill Orphan, the fal'Cie that keeps Cocoon powered and floating in the sky and shit. His plan seems to be that if enough people die, the original god of the world will come back and everything will be super peachy again. The party's like "yeah no, fuck that, we're not slaughtering millions of people just so you can have your imaginary friend come back and hang out with you, eat a dick." Then they go to Pulse and try to find a way to not be l'Cie anymore so they don't have to choose between mass murder and being horrible crystal zombies. There isn't a way, of course, and I guess they decide to go back to Cocoon and kill Barthandelus because he's a cunt and if they're all going to face a fate worse than death, they might as well at least kill the guy who's responsible for it. Then they get to his secret volcano lair, and Orphan is there, and they just sort of... attack it. They do the one thing they specifically set out to not do, and nobody fucking comments on it. What the fuck?

That's even stupider than "hey, the way we're gonna kill Ultimecia is, get this, let her put her evil reality-ending plan into motion then just sort of jump out and bushwhack her while she's preoccupied."

Then I guess they get saved by the power of friendship or some bullshit? Whatever the hell happened in the ending cinematic wasn't foreshadowed or referenced beforehand, they could have just literally had a wizard come and make everything ok and it would've had the same relevance.

Man, fuck this game.

Phoenix Gamma
Dec 23rd, 2012, 05:00 AM
Well, the Fal'Cie are these mechanical things beyond human comprehension, so what I took away from it was that they were literal gods, and when they make you a l'Cie, you're supposed to follow through with your mission, and when you do, things will work out in the end, because God(s) work in mysterious ways.

Again, the whole story is reeeeeally just an excuse to show you neat graphics. Square's games really don't hold up well against scrutiny, so you really need to properly adjust your expectations and take their games at face value.

Oh man, you need to Wikipedia that shit. It was an MMO like FFXI, right, but it was completely broken. There's a reason they've only done FFXIII sequels. Square-Enix has even said that FFXIV has completely ruined the Final Fantasy brand name. It's also why they won't do a remake of FF7. They said if they did that now it'd just put the final nail in the coffin and they they wouldn't do it until they could make a modern Final Fantasy game that could live up to the brand name.

Then they put out FF13-3.

Yay....

FFXVI was free for a time because the game was so bad that the developers didn't want to charge a subscription until it was fixed. Then a year went by and it still wasn't fixed. I'm pretty sure the beta of 2.0 has been out for awhile, but it's been a real painful process.

FF14? Everything, as far as I can recall. It was riddled with bugs, potentially gamebreaking, the systems were not designed well, it was slow as fuck, uninspired, rushed...and...yeah, about the worst MMO-Release in the last ten years or something like that, according to the press and the reviewers.

It's also why they won't do a remake of FF7.

An FF7 remake would suck. I guess people want the graphics redone like Advent Children. Is that a good thing? Do you really want a modern Squarenix style makeover? And do you think they'll leave it at that? Of course they'll find other things to "fix".

Final Fantasy 13 is a bad game, but I thought the relationships between the main characters were interesting. I never finished the game because the difficulty curve shot to the fucking moon but I did watch the ending on Youtube; awful. I've noticed in a lot of Japanese media they'll drop whatever interesting characterization they were working on up to that point for an overly serious big boss to test our heroes for boring faux tension. It's as if someone is offstage yelling "wrap it up, wrap it up."

NOW THE FINAL BNOS BATTLE MEtATRON

i lost interest in ff 13 when that dude started riding a motorcycle. that was literally the point that i decided to return it

ffvii isa good game cuz the story isnt too gay, the levelup system isnt too bad and it has awesome sidequests and summons and shit.aslong asthey could upgrade the graphics and make the gameplay a little better i dont see how they could go wrong. maybe they could even throw in a revive aeris thingi
lol j/k people dont know how to not fuck up videogames anymore. itd prolly just end up being a game about reviving aeris

what was so bad about it

I only played the "beta" (which was released 2 weeks before the game launched. It wasn't changed when it officially started) and the interface was the most abysmal piece of UI ever created, it lacked common features that MMOs have had for years (auction house, in particular), the setting was incredibly bland even for an MMO, and nearly every single action you could possibly take had some weird kind of condition to it.

An FF7 remake would suck. I guess people want the graphics redone like Advent Children. Is that a good thing? Do you really want a modern Squarenix style makeover? And do you think they'll leave it at that? Of course they'll find other things to "fix".
Well the main problem is that FF7 still had a lot of weird humor and pantomiming left over from the SNES era. You'd need to change the whole tone of a lot of scenes.

ffvii isa good game cuz the story isnt too gay,
Emo McJackass walks around a Not-Blade-Runner futuristic city and give everyone an attitude, then falls in love with a flower girl who's the last of some ancient race, then the flower girl dies and Baby PoutsAlot goes catatonic because he realized everything he ever told everyone was actually copypasted from someone else's biography. Then he kills some guy in a battle of impossible swords and goes home to hang out with a talking tiger and a robot cat.

But seriously, FF7 is just FF6 except the graphics aged like milk and the gameplay is way slower. Even the "magic abused through technology" thing was done better in FF6. After playing FF6 and Chrono Trigger on the SNES, FF7 just felt regressive as fuck.

Well if you ever saw the tech demo they made when the PS3 came out they kept everything looking t6he same as FF7's concept art, character wise and kept the same city layouts.

FF7, myself included, only want a remake in terms of the same game, just with modern graphics.

that's like an amazing storyline. you're introduced to a character as some badassand probably even believe it for a while unless you're a little kid who was told the story before you even played it and read gay memes and reviews on the internet or something, then halfway through he turns into some schizophrenic who stole his life from somebody else.
thats fuckin deep.

also why do you say non bladerunner esque. what does that even mean? there was no robots? the worldwasnt decimatedenough by technology?
dude was a dude who thought he was another dude because of science. thats bladerunneresque as hell.

Steam is basically handing out free Wallet money, so I bought a bunch of gaaaaaaames:

COD 4
The Bard's Tale (it includes the previous games, as well)
Sine Mora
and
Soon to be the Dead Rising 2 complete pack.

I never got to play Off the Record as it always looked cool, but not cool enough to pay for.

For friends, I bought:

Dungeons of Dredmor Complete
Critter Crunch
Country English Tune
Mirror's Edge
Psychonauts
and
Arkham City GOTY Edition

All while starting from $0.00. Please jackhammer this smile off of my face - it's starting to hurt.

Here's what I'm currently playing...

Midway Arcade Origins
Toejam and Earl
Toejam and Earl in Panic on Funkotron.

I also received Assassin's Creed III and plan to play that a bit later.

For my friend Jason I also bought him the two Arkham games for his X-Box.

FZ what is the wallet witchery you speak of? Just everything being super cheap? Or are they actually giving away money?

I've also been playing Xenogears lately.

You know what is a shitty game that makes both FF6 and 7 look like goddamn Shakespeare in comparison, no matter your opinions regarding them?

Xenogears!

It's like the old king of awful JRPG cliche trainwreck plots, before Tales of Shitphonia got shat onto the gamecube and set the lowest possible standard for fucking horrible games.

The gun store ruled. There's a lot of shitty levels in this game, like the first Chinatown and the motherfucking caves and weapons plant, but the gun store is amazing. One of the only Hitman things in the goddamn game, followed by the hit on Sanchez.

so basically, what you're telling me, is that hitman, the game about killing people by performing hits on people as a hitman, is the most hitman-like when you are retrieving some guns from a store and there is absolutely no requirement to perform a hit on somebody.

By that definition, which assumes you've never played a game in the Hitman series before, then no. You, in fact, are not required to hit any mans in that mission.

I'd call it promising if I forgot Blood Money existed. Now I'm just happy another team is doing it. Honestly, I didn't have much faith in this thing after Kane and Lynch 2.
