Final Fantasy 2 is the only one I enjoyed playing through, that being said, I'm a little weary of turn based rpg's

FF2 as in the NES game, or the SNES game? I tried the DS remake of the SNES one and thought it was okay. Cecil's a shitty protagonist.

Yeah. I have to go with FF2 (Or FF4 really) and FF3 (Which was what really? FF6?) and FFX was a suprise too. Yea, FF2 was actually FF4, and FF3 was actually FF6. But now that every Final Fantasy finally came out in America with it's original title, Square and everyone else stick to the actual numbers. I liked FF6 a little, but I got stuck at some snow area and couldn't be assed to start the game over again.

FFX was pretty annoying, though; the characters were all lame, the story was pretty stupid (Meg Ryan is a water polo player who travels to the future to fight a monster. Except he's just a dream) and you kill that loser Seymour probably four times in the entire game. Not "knocked him out"; he actually dies multiple times and comes back from the dead because he wants to fuck Yuna so badly.

I did like the combat. The whole "switch party members mid-battle" thing is something more RPGs need to do. There's no reason for three people to go through a fortress when I have a whole army of dudes.

FF6 is in my opinion the best FF ever made. You would do well to give it another shot, if only a free ROM download.

Yeah the story and characters in FFX are not what make it great. The combat and the ability wheel or whatever it was called.

FF2 on SNES was really good but hard.

Phoenix: I agree with Dimnos. You def should play through FF6. If you get stuck just let me know instead of looking it up. You should be able to play through the whole game without using a strat guide. If I'll mention one thing while playing through the game it's

Wait......wait for shadow........

Yea, I got the ROM on my Wii waiting to go (playing on a TV with the controller motivates me), so I might try that again if FF9 doesn't work out. I'm only in the Ice Cavern right now, so we'll see how things go from here.

I like the ability system, because it reminds me of the one in Tactics A2, which was the only reason I played that game.

Do you need to MOD the WII for the emulator to work? I'm trying to get my roommate to do it but he's weary of it.

Phoenix Gamma
Jun 8th, 2009, 01:34 PM
You need the Homebrew Channel to run it. No mod chips or anything. BannerBomb lets you install the channel without Twilight Princess, so it's actually easier than ever to set it up now. After that, you just need to download the emulator and ROMs.

10,000 Volt Ghost
Jun 8th, 2009, 01:37 PM
I'll try that. I actually have Twilight Princess so I'll check it out wednesday at my day off. Is that where you can download Brawl+ too?

Phoenix Gamma
Jun 8th, 2009, 01:50 PM
Brawl+ requires you to download Gecko OS (basically, a cheat program like Action Replay or Gameshark) because it isn't technically a mod in the literal sense; all the changes (loading custom costumes, increasing specific attack speed or damage) are just codes that are loaded through Gecko. You can still play normal Brawl by not loading Gecko.

I've got the links for BannerBomb, Homebrew (HackMii), Emulators, and Brawl+ all bookmarked if you need me to email them to you or something, but it's really just a matter of putting things in folders and pressing A.

also, a friend started infamous being good, but yet during the first mission with the food, people were like "yeah!" "alright!" and happy and shit, then a cutscene plays and apparently everyone still hates him, started throwing rocks. this morality system is so broken (SEE FALLOUT3 FOR COMPARISON)

The one I hated most was where you had to chase down and kill the Lost gang member, because he gets a badass speedy hog and you get a fucking honda to follow him with. And you can't actually kill him until he calls his friends up in the park and you get into a gunfight with them on foot.

I figured I'd just shoot him off his bike right after the mission started and that would be that, but noooooooo, he gets arbitrary godmode for five minutes.

Okay so frisbee golf in Tiger Woods is totally one-to-one. The only problem is I can't throw frisbees for shit, so I get the same horrible results in the game as I do in real life :(

Still, the game recognized all of my hand motions, so if I wanted to throw the disc at my own face, I could.

It was a little slow to start off. They have a prologue that is very linear and then the actual game starts up and the first few missions that are the tutorial are also rather linear. After all that crap though the game truly opens up to be a sandbox game and its quite bad ass. Im not really that far into yet, I just picked it up last night. But so far its great.

I have it on the PS3, which is the same as the 360 and PC version. The story is silly, and it's really a lot of fan-service thus far, as in "HERE. NOW WE HAVE TO FIGHT 'X-GHOST' FROM BEFORE IN A FAMILIAR PLACE." I dunno. I just finished up the Library, which is the third level and it's all about the Librarian from the first movie. Still trying to play ARMA2 but it is very difficult.

I've got one other friend that plays so we usually get on Vent and just do our own thing. Obviously not trying to clear out a whole objective but we set ourselves tasks like taking out T90s and such. It's cool because at the main base you have a whole load of ammo boxes full with practically anything you could want - Javelin missiles, SMAWs, rifles, sniper rifles, satchel charges etc. So what we were doing last night was loading the boot on a Humvee full of weapons then driving to a wooded hill overlooking a tank concentration. After observing it for several minutes we took a few tentative shots at a patrolling T90, which alearted the enemy to our presence and ultimately led to us both getting killed. Fun though, and if we'd had a couple more squad mates we could've done a lot more damage.

Yeah a lot of people have been having performance problems. Apparently it's being worked on for the next patch. Though even with optimisations I still think it'll be a CPU/GPU/memory hog because of the huge amount of detail in the maps.

The other thing is I can't imagine much gets achieved in the demo as everyone will be inexperienced and it takes at least a couple of weeks of consistent play to find your feet in this game. To find good team-mates you'll probably need a full version (though even the full version is full of tossers).

Garou: Mark of the Wolves is quickly becoming a favorite of me and my brother's. The characters are all extremely well designed (i.e. they look like fighters (most of them, anyway) and are fun to play), the system works very well (sort-of like SF but with 4 buttons rather than 6), and the entire presentation is gorgeous. It almost feels like blasphemy to say that it might actually be better than SFIII (which currently holds my position for best fighter, but maybe not for much longer).

I just finished playing NSMB again. Sadly, my feelings haven't changed. It's still a disappointment for a Mario game. 16 years we wait, and all we get is a passable platformer. Mario shouldn't be passable, or adequate. He should be Glorious. I really hope Nintendo steps it up to their A game for NSMBW, because I honestly felt that the 2D sections of Galaxy felt more like 2D Mario than NSMB did.

I also finished Metroid Prime 3 again. I seriously underrated that game. While it is the worst of the Metroid Prime games (bosses, story, levels, item usage all step down in quality from the previous games), it's still damn good. The Grapple Lasso is featured prominently and is fun to use (though I wish it had more importance that it did. If they make a 4th 3D Metroid game maybe they'll find more use for it), there are still some nuggets of genius bosses and levels, and the soundtrack is Kenji Yamamoto's usual Atmospheric brilliance. The controls are absolutely fantastic. The Wii has no excuse not to have fantastic FPS's when MP3 so clearly shows how an FPS should play on the console. They work so well that I'm going to buy the Trilogy so I don't have to feel weird playing Prime 1 and 2 later. Get the Trilogy when it comes out so you can play these 3 great games.

SFII: Remix still gets plenty of play. The designer of the game (David Sirlin (sirlin.net) did a fantastic job rebalancing the cast. They all play much better than they did in Super Turbo. He did so great that I felt no need to keep SFIV (sold it on eBay) since it paled in comparison. The ST and new art are great too.

Are you going to play BlazBlue on 360 or PS3? :(

I keep certain demons, but I try to balance the parties. What I do when I see a nice fusion is run to the Auction and just buy duplicates of what I need, then fuse those guys instead. That way I don't lose someone I might want to stick around.

I'm playing BlazBlue on PS3. Don't own a 360, but even if I did, the PS3 has a nicer D-Pad.

Okay, so now it is Valkyria Chronicles and Knights in the Nightmare, which are both awesome. Ordered a Demon Souls from Hong Kong as well, I just hope it doesn´t get stuck in customs/toll (whatever the correct word may be in this sentence) again like Knights...BUT it came with the nice Artbook, which I didn´t expect, so it´s okay.

BlahzBlue finally arrived after UPS dragged out a 10 minute trip for 6 hours :(

I kinda prefer Guilty Gear. It just feels like BB has less options and a slower pace. Maybe I just need to play around some more. The repetitive sound bites are also pretty annoying (YOU'RE NOT HUMAN! YOU'RE NOT HUMAN! MAJOR! MAJOR! OPTIC BARREL! OPTI-MAJOR!)

The art book was also pretty disappointing too; only 31 pages. I guess the print quality is nice, though. And the additional "how to play" disc is pretty handy.

I just bought and beat SuperHero Mode in Mega Man 9. I was originally against it since I thought it was bullshit that Capcom would charge for a difficulty level. But I noticed I was playing Endless Attack more than the main game for Mega Man 9 and I attributed this to the relative lack of enemies to shoot in Mega Man 9 compared to older games in the series. Reading some good reviews of the mode on the GameFAQs forums I decided to swallow my pride and buy the mode. I'm glad I did.

SuperHero is fantastic. All that I thought was missing from the Normal mode is in SuperHero: More Enemies, More interesting use of the various devices (Warp Cubes, Elevating/Descending Platforms, Nega Man), More Bite. It's definitely the way I'll play the game from now on. If you need a reason to pick up Mega Man 9 again, I highly recommend SuperHero Mode (and if you haven't yet picked up Endless Attack you're missing out on one of the most genius modes ever put in a platform game. Get Both (and Skip Proto, he sucks).

Great game.

MvC2 is still the best fighter though :(

FistfulOAwesome
Jul 4th, 2009, 03:48 AM
It's far too unbalanced for me. I think when you have that many characters, balance is hard to maintain. Plus it's focus on craziness over pure fighting. It's kinda like the Fighter version of playing Grand Theft Auto with the cheats: Fun for about twenty minutes.

Phoenix Gamma
Jul 4th, 2009, 06:21 AM
there are 50 characters. You have no need to pick just one.

FistfulOAwesome
Jul 4th, 2009, 11:29 AM
I guess some people get bored playing a single character for a 3-minute match (that's about average length for most matches). Personally, I get bored mashing buttons for Supers. I'm much more interested in outsmarting my opponents with my various moves (Normal doesn't mean worse. You'd be surprised how well Crouching Hard Punch works as an Anti-Air for Ryu) than seeing the carnage unfold.

Maybe the focus on Flash is one of the reasons I didn't like SFIV but many others did. They like seeing 10 second cutscene Supers of "them" kicking ass, similar to the love of MVC2 for it's focus on Supers. For me, that's not enough. I need a good, balanced game behind it (what do I care if I beat my brother if the only reason he lost is that he didn't mash fast enough?). I like to know I beat the other guy because I'm better than him, not because the fight just ended up that way (i.e. I was a faster masher).

Phoenix Gamma
Jul 4th, 2009, 01:55 PM
Street Fighter IV is one of the more balanced fighting games out there. If you're mashing buttons, you're doing it wrong. But hey, if beating your little brother by hammering buttons is boring, I can't blame you ;)

I won't defend MvC2 as balanced, but only "That Guy" gives a fuck. The rest of the world is having fun beating each other up and don't have time to memorize which of the 50+ characters are the best.

FistfulOAwesome
Jul 4th, 2009, 05:08 PM
I don't like SFIV for different reasons (Flash + SFII.5) but I do understand that it's balanced. It's what it's balanced around that annoys me. The top-tier characters are mostly guys who have easy combo into Ultra. If getting good at that game means I have to endure those 10 second cutscenes, leave me out (I actually sold it and went back to HD Remix, Alpha II, TS, and now MOTW).

As for MVC2, I have fun with that game. I just don't know how anyone could call it the "best" 2D Fighter, for all the reasons I stated. I get tired with the hammering buttons and eventually desire some actual serious play. Playing pick-up basketball is fun, but it only makes me desire a serious game all the more. It's more fun for me to have my skills tested.

Play DoA. It's all about reading your opponents. If you try to rush in mashing buttons or even doing actual combos any opponent worth their salt will quickly counter you and you will die really fast.

It's not as 3d as you might think. The 3d only comes into play when you kick someone and they get knocked around to one side or the other. Then the camera will spin around to line you two back up. It really does play more like a 2d fighter game. If reading your opponent and properly reacting to their actions is what you are looking for DoA really is worth checkng out. Do you have an xbox? You can DL a demo for free and check it out.

There are a lot of tech style 2D fighters out there. MvC2 is just pure adrenaline and fun. It does still maintain a gap between skilled players and button mashers. Don't be static and the matches can be very balanced with the character volume.

Still 7th Saga :o

I was promised that this game would be ludicrously difficult, but so far it's not nearly as unforgiving as some of the older RPGs I've played (Final Fantasy 1).

The more runes I get the easier the game is. They're basically free buff items with absolutely no penalties, and I was pretty overpowered before I started getting these things; Esuna's weakest spell can one-shot most monsters that are at the same level as her, and the ones she doesn't kill she leaves on death's doorstep. This isn't mentioning her higher attack spells, and the fact that she can restore magic indefinitely and stay out grinding virtually forever. Or the fact that she's ludicrously fast and always attacks first. And and and I partied with Olvan, the resident brute-forcer, so whatever faults Esuna has are compensated for by teaming with her statistical opposite.

There are barely ever any boss fights, either. I've made enemies of two other apprentices, but only one is still alive and the other one is always an optional fight.

You have to do the pick pocket and eavesdropping mini-missions now. After you do enough of those something else will pop up. But let me tell you... the funnest thing to do in that game is just start killing a lot of guards and get a bunch to follow you up on top of a really high building then start throwing them off. Or find a guard who is already standing on a roof and run up behind him and shove him off and listen for the crowed below to scream. Good times. :lol

Link to the Past is my absolute favorite. Nothing wrong with that game.

Majora's Mask is second; the world was dense and the side stories fleshed everything out. More Zeldas need to be that experimental (it was dark, twisted, and the game structure was really different, even today).

Wind Waker's nice and all, but sailing sucks balls, and the Triforce Quest is the worst fetch quest in the history of videogames (find 8 maps, payover 3000 rupees, sail for a few hours to find the 8 pieces. Okay you can play the rest of the game now).

Legend has aged horribly. You need a guide to beat that game; there's no way to figure that shit out yourself. "Grumble Grumble"?! How the hell am I supposed to know that means to go find a shop on the other side of the world and buy meat?

The handheld games don't get enough love, though. Awakening was awesome, and the Oracle games were really, really cool. Minish Cap and Phantom Hourglass were a little disappointing, though.

Link to the Past is the pentacle of Zelda games. The only way it could get better than that is to possibly do a precise 3D remake with Twilight Princes graphics.

I LOVED sailing in Windwaker! That you had to sail around to all these different islands was a fresh change for the series I thought. The fact that I love sailing in real life probably contributed to my thoughts on that though. Without a doubt though Windwaker had the BEST ending ever!

i have to second/third/fourth? about LTTP. actually, i'd probably say that it's my favorite snes game ever, as well as the best zelda game. but, as cool as a 3D remake would look, it would actually detract from gameplay. i feel like seeing the top-down view of an entire (or most of) a room contributed to the puzzles. unless they just amped up the graphics but kept the camera angle

nah that would still suck

after having finished LOOM and now playing through monkey island for the one billionth time (btw, everyone fucking buy it. it's perfecccccccccccccccct) i might try out the dig. it got a lot of crappy reviews, at least compared to lucasfilms other adventure games. however, as long as it's better/longer than LOOM then i'll pay the 5 bucks for it

edit with actually editing: nevermind i'm just fucking buying it

Windwaker is the peak of the Zelda series and somewhere deep down I always knew that :<

I didn't want to accept it and I let Nintendo cocktease me with Twilight Princess for three years, but when I played it finally it was so awful that it felt like they'd just given up on the franchise entirely.

I don't blame them, though, I certainly have.

As for LTTP I played it to completion once then never touched it again. It was ok, Link's Awakening was better.

God, Link's Awakening is such a fucking good game.

I should play it now, even!

I LOVED sailing in Windwaker! That you had to sail around to all these different islands was a fresh change for the series I thought. The fact that I love sailing in real life probably contributed to my thoughts on that though. Without a doubt though Windwaker had the BEST ending ever!

Nothing happened when you sailed. You outran all the enemies, and even if you fought them, it was pretty frustrating. I set the controller down and played LttP while I waited to play Wind Waker again. If the ocean was a little smaller, I wouldn't have minded so much. Stabbing Ganondorf in the head was neat, but the ending was such a downer. Should have made all of Hyrule explorable after you got the Triforce. Or drained the ocean after you rang the bell at the top of the tower. Either way, fuck the fetch quest.

Plus, everyone's faces were really creepy. What I'm really waiting for is a cel-shaded Zelda that looks like this:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v298/PGamma/1230471402352.jpg

Just got the Master Sword in TP. I'm finding myself liking Midna more than last time (not that I hated her; I liked her then, too), and I'm noticing all of the little details they added in the dungeons and towns. One of my favorites is the old, opened chest in thew Sacred Grove, which was opened by you when you warp back in to the Temple of Time. Clever little details like that is always neat to find. Wind Waker had a lot of that hidden in the castle and on the pirate ship that you just wouldn't find unless you took a good look around.

YE LUBBERS DON'T UNDERSTAND

WHEN IT'S JUST YE

AND THE SEA

Most of the time when I was going somewhere in WindWaker I'd get sidetracked by an island or a sea tower or a submarine, and I'd go and wreck their shit Errol Flynn style and then jump back into my boat and sail off loaded down with booty. It's the only good pirate game to date, and that's a big part of why I love it.

I totally see where GW is coming from with that. Monkey Island is a great pirate themed adventure game but you dont actually get to do much pirating if any at all. You dont get to board someones ship and wreck the place up and make off with their loot. Guybrush is too obsessed with the tang.

Sam & Max Save The World, which I downloaded from Xbox Live a few days ago and started playing today (been busy with Ninja Gaiden II and The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition). I really should have bought this for the PC or Wii years ago because it's awesome, but better late than never, I guess.

Maybe I should also go back to Indiana Jones & The Fate of Atlantis... I got that from Steam last week, played it for a while and then ended up getting stuck. I'm sure the solution to the particular puzzle is completely obvious, though, it usually is.

Star Ocean: The last hope. Rented it for now but thinking about buying it. I loved SO2 but didn't play much of 3 at all. Last hope is a lot of fun so far. The voice acting isn't terrible and the battle system is pretty fun. Real time combat with visible enemies on the field map. Once you run into an enemy it switches to a battle screen seperate of the field map. It just doesn't seem like a any rpgs do that anymore.

I stopped playing Star Ocean: tlh after around 15 hours, don´t really know why, but I guess it has something to do with the fact that my 360 is SO fucking loud I can hardly hear anything else in the room, and I am NOT exaggerating. My hairdryer makes less noise but I don´t want to shell out another 100 bucks to get a new 360. Stupid piece of electronic junk.

Apart from that, I actually had fun with battlefield heroes yesterday...funny little game.

Wot? You mean aiming without standing in place and holding R? The Gamecube controls just make Samus' tank-like movement that much more obvious. The only real waggle Corruption uses is the grapple beam (which I like, actually) and the switches. The rest is just pointing and shooting.

It'll make the bullshit fights against the Chozo Ghosts way less frustrating. And to a lesser extent, Space Pirate fights, though that only frustrated me because the Space Pirtate Theme is so goddamn awful that I wanted the fights to be done with.

They only have the save state to appeal to newer gamers, unfortunately.
To be honest, I didn't even know that there were emulators for the older systems until I started visiting I-Mockery, which was only a couple months ago. I just stuck to hooking up a NES that I've had since I was 5 and playing the few games that I still had for it, including the aforementioned TMNT as well as Castlevania II: Simon's Quest and Hogan's Alley. Yup, my Light Gun still works after all of these years, having shot the hell out of those thugs and cans and the occasional civilian who'd look like a thug to me.
