srsly u guise play Ghost Trick it's great you're a ghost and you possess things and the Phoenix Write team made it except it's not a text adventure game so it's not boring and there's a dog named Missle who's pretty much the best dog in the history of fiction except that one dog in that book I read in 4th grade who was in the sled race with the boy but the dog's heart exploded right at the finish line and the boy carried the dog to the finish and I cried then it was lunch time but I was still sad :tear

Why do all the good stories involve dieing?

Alright, more thoughts on DC Universe online after playing it for most of the weekend.

Really stable, still not a single crash though I had to relog twice because my powers wouldn´t activate, seems to be some problem with the interface.

I mostly played as Vic Eldritch, flying, axewiedling magic-user (Destiny branch) and while the gameplay is way more simple than...say World of W, it´s more fun at the same time. I may only have 5, 6 Skills at level 12 but that kinda focusses the experience a bit more. I have to rely on the proper use of those skills and rely on my weapon for the most part which by now can do quite a few useful combos. I can stun my enemies with a flurry of axe blows, smash them in the air and stuff like that.

I also really like the style feature the more stuff I get. My villain looks like I want, no matter what stuff I´m really wearing.

The quests have some nice moments in them too. As a minion of Circe, I battled Dr. Fate (never heard of him before), I clobbered, Queen Bee...on the Heroe´s side, I arrested Scarecrow and even Bane, now that was kinda cool. They also send in NPC-Heroes to help you so for example in the Bane fight, Nightwing joins in to take revenge for Batman´s spine :D

I´ve yet to try alerts (raids) and PVP but I can already tell there´s a lot of factions I can buy stuff from, complete with cool faction armor that looks really nice. I´d post a screenshot of my guys but I don´t think the PS3-Version can do that...

I bought a bunch of games during the Steam Christmas sale but I've only really gotten into two of them, The Path and Super Meat Boy. I'm excited for the SMB level editor I have some great level ideas. I'm hoping to finish everything in the game before it comes out but everything I have left is really hard.

You haven't tried PVP at all? You're really missing out on what DC does well if you're playing on a PVE server.

Yeah, Iīll try it sometime this weekend but PVP mostly just makes me furious. Iīm a really sore loser, I canīt handle other people killing me without me killing them FOR REAL :\

Or in other words: PVP can ruin my mood instantly. Thatīs why I try to steer clear from that. An exception is when Iīm not alone, playing with friends because they get killed as much as I am so itīs kind of a shared rage...

Stalker: Call of Pripyat.

Within the first 15 minutes of playtime, I killed a bloodsucker, betrayed like 5 guys, hunted mutated pigs, and was mauled by a pack of wild dogs who charged into the middle of a gunfight.

I'd say it was pretty awesome.

I've also been slumming around on a World of Warcraft trial account. I leveled a Troll Shaman up to 19 in about 7 days of casualfagging, which is about the point you have to start dungeoneering to keep up experience flow. After two or three dungeon attempts with PuGs I can see where some of the vehement hatred of the game comes from, because everyone who's not a serious-business smacktard busy kickbanning me for sucking is even worse than I am, which is horrifying to behold.

I did get lucky and end up saddled with a party that was at just the right level of retardation; a mage, a hunter, a priest, and, after our Tank crapped out, myself, playing rock-guitar solos on every monster's face with my battleaxe and having their chair shots to my midsection balanced out by a constant spam of healing spells from the other guy, all the while supported by bullets and fireballs from the peanut gallery. It wasn't entirely sophisticated - we were basically just spamming whatever made the biggest numbers as fast as we could - but I had quite a bit of fun once I found some easygoing dudes to play with. Of course, the chances of getting saddled with a good group even a fourth of the time are probably pretty fucking slim, if Left 4 Dead is anything to go on.

So yeah, I can see how people would enjoy the camaraderie, the setting, and the art style, because I thought those were neat. And gameplay-wise, after you start to get a respectable collection of powers and shit, it's pretty satisfying to unload them all on a boss monster over and over again, but it's more or less Diablo: Slow Edition. Not to mention the massive amounts of jogging through barren wilderness in between quests and dungeon groups. That alone has probably taken up about half of my play time.

I´ve been playing Dungeon Raid all day (Iphone game). It´s fucking awesome. A simple match-3 at first glance but with a very nice RPG overlay without becoming a Puzzle Quest-clone. Visit the shop by matching enough coins, the blacksmith by getting shields and defeat your enemies by matching swords with them.

Fast and fun gameplay, quick sessions, great concept. If you have an iOS-device, get it.

Monday Night Combat!

Short version: Team Fortress 3 came out early, and it is really fucking good.

Long version. From the screenshots and preview videos I assumed it'd be nothing more than a less-inspired TF2 equivalent for console tards, who will never have the updated version of TF2 available, and I would have been reasonably satisfied with that, if a little copycat-wary. Instead, the developers basically took all the stuff that makes TF2 great, boiled it down to essentials, and built a completely different gameplay experience around those core concepts. Specifically, a bizarre hybrid of team deathmatch and tower defense. And it is awesome. It looks fucking great, too, the entire thing has a fantastic visual flow that I'm having a difficult time putting into words. Probably because I'm an impoverished Wii owner unused to fancy graffix, and because I decided the best way to experience this title for the first time was underwater-stoned.

I am told it bears similarities to something dubbed "Defense of the Ancients," but I wouldn't know, because that's an RTS thing, and I don't play RTSs. I mean, I have a penis and all.

My favorite classes to play are probably Support and Assassin, although I concede that Assassin is one of the easiest roles in the game to fill, partially due to how it can attack while still invisible (which is kinda necessary since you can see behind you and all), and partially because you can get instant kills on anything but Tanks if you spend your money right early on. A Gray Level 3 Assassin is the best thing for taking down Jackbots, no question. Not to mention that, with all the kills you rack up after maxing out your attack power, buying into maxouts for every other skill doesn't take very long. And that's not even getting into the abuse potential for her smokebomb-jump thing, which I have only begun to wrap my head around. I wouldn't mind a nerf for these guys, but I'm not really qualified to think about that since I know how less than half of the game works.

The only real problems I can see at this point are that every map basically looks the same, and the one thing they ripped off wholesale from TF2, every class having a distinct look and personality, falls kinda flat, because they don't talk as much and aren't incredibly endearing (except the announcer, who is a complete asshole and is hilarious). The silhouette thing works about as well as it does in TF2, you can basically always tell what you're up against just by taking a quick look around.

If you can run this game, at all, buy it immediately, because it is gooder than hell.

Picked up Rhythm Heaven again last night while going through old games. Close to getting all Golds, but man, that game fucks with me. And not in a sexy way that involves my penis. It's more fun than a lot of rhythm games, but it's really fucking strict about timing. More so than other rhythm games. Lockstep really frustrates me because I can't seem to hit those offbeats :\

Also some scout in TF2 was harassing me on top of a building while I was a sniper. He leaped off the building to try and dodge my knife, and I accidentally switched to the rife and shot him unscoped, killing him. Felt fucking awesome. I need to get a new mic though because the one I use was found in a dumpster behind my university's art department building 4 years ago and it buzzes a lot. Someone complained last night and I felt bad :\

in Versus it´s really a bit like Team Fortress.
The game honestly reminds me a lot more of Team Fortress Classic than 2, and I can't decide whether that's good or bad. TFC is an awesome game that I like a lot, but it's also a horrible shitpile full of fucking wankers who never play it right. Here's what I mean, more or less.

In TFC, unlike in TF2, every class gets two types of grenades (except the Sniper, who only gets one): Frag grenades, your typical throw-do-damage bollocks, and a special grenade relating to what the class does. Demoman gets a big fuckoff bomb that splinters into like 6 smaller grenades after exploding, Spy gets gas grenades that cause the enemy to hallucinate and be unfit to chase him (in theory, anyway, in practice they were just mildly annoying/hilarious to drop at spawn doors), Pyro gets a fire grenade, Scout gets caltrops and concussion grenades to make him even more of an uncatchable little bastard, etc. They can carry up to four of both types, which is more than you'll ever need per life, but they can be refilled pretty easily. Now, in the game, there are only two classes that really bother to fight with bullets, and that's Sniper and Heavy Weapons Guy. Everyone else might as well throw their guns in the fucking river, since their grenades are one or two hit kills that you barely have to aim and are easily mastered, especially if you're of the basement dwelling persuasion. (In all honestly, though, the special grenades are pretty cool, and I could see the whole grenade system being mildly balanced if only a handful of classes got frags instead of 8 of them; the way it is now, everyone's basically a Demoman and sentries are a complete joke.)

Team Fortress Classic also contains the Combat Medic, who, unlike his nice and balanced German drinking buddy, is objectively the best class in the entire game. He's super fast, has a big fuckoff super nailgun, can fly around the map with his concussion grenades without taking damage, and has a hand-held medpak that is ostensibly for healing friendlies, but is only ever used for its secondary function of infecting enemies with a nigh incurable, contagious virus that you can only get rid of if you're healed by a friendly Medic (note: this will never, ever happen). Don't try going into the spawn for those medpack drops, either, since that will infect your entire team through I guess the fucking loudspeaker. Needless to say, Medics are complete fucking dicks, every team has at least 3, and I hate them.

Now, replace "Grenades" with "Skills" and "Medic" with "Assassin" and you've more or less got Monday Night Combat. The only thing I seem to be good at is farting around the Moneyball as Support upgrading RockIt turrets, poking my head out of the stronghold to farm cash from bots, and crying (unrelated aside: the Support's cowardly weeping every time he gets shot is fucking hilarious). Everything else gets me horribly murdered, if not by an Assassin, then by any class that's there, usually instantaneously. 80% of the time, guns are not a part of the equation from their end, the preferred methods of offing my stupid ass being grapple kills and spamming skills, a good most of which are inescapable death sentences when fully upgraded. Special mention goes to Assault's charge tackle, which sends you flying out of the arena at about 90 miles per hour and can be done from a decent distance away. Funny the first two times, monitor-fist infuriating from then on.

Assassins are a major problem for me; twice as fast as everyone else, can go twice as fast as that when using their dash skill, and can attack while invisible, so you will never see them until you are deceased. This is justified, in theory, by a faint drone emitted by their cloaking device, but go ahead and try to hear that in the middle of a firefight, or while doing anything at all other than standing stock still listening for Assassins. Fully upgraded ones don't even have to get behind you for a one-shot, they can just leap on your face and initiate wanton slaughter. They also share the TFC Medic's ability to freely leap around the map while simultaneously fucking up the HUDs of other players, which is a right pain in the dick. A favorite technique seems to be just jumping over their heads while blind and backstabbing them. Not to mention the lunge ability, which is activated by "reloading" the knife, recharges in a fraction of a second as to be massively spammable, does an absurd amount of damage, and shoots the player forward about 10 feet, again boosting the mobility of the runny fuckheads. I don't care for Tanks because they also kill the shit out of me, but they seem to be the best anti-assassin class due to their fire gun and inability to be one-shotted ever. I will either main them in the future or have one be my very best friend in every game.

tl;dr: MNC is good but I hate the fucking shit out of it. Also, would it have killed the porting team to have added a permanantly visible chat field, instead of making you hit U every time you want to see what anyone's typing? Or let us type while dead, or let us type more than half a twitter entry? Fuck, man, Marathon had better player chat than this.

And if you play Medic/Support in any game, you earn at least my respect. We need every brave and supportive soul we can get so yeah, Kudos to you for that.

I don´t know if they changed the Assassins since last time I played but they were kinda visible while running so spotting them was not the problem most of the time and while playing Assault, I had little problems with them. Then again, that was in the beginning phase of the game, I suppose people are way better with the classes by now.

So, do the guys at Blizzard realize that buying a game with money is supposed to be easier than pirating it? Because I don't think they do, which is why they are programming a rudimentary recursive failure into their installer.

Basically, it has to make minor changes to the files it installs, and when it can't, it deletes everything. I'm suspecting that the reason it can't change them is because they are in use by the installer. :oneofthosedays

Well, I mostly play as Sona and I can never seem to level as fast as everyone else, so they cause problems. It could also be because Sona just sucks.

PG: Were you playing on an extended maptime server or whatever? I generally only break 100 in under 30 minutes if I'm being incredibly awesome.

Have also been getting back into Mario Strikers Charged lately and was surprised to find that a whole lot of people still play it. It's understandable, really; since Brawl's online support is a horrifying 12-foot lag, tomato, and cheese combo sandwich and Mario Kart Wii is a roadtrip over the Blandlands in the Blandmobile headed straight to Blandytown, Strikers is basically the only good online game on the whole system. Finally got Ico. I like to claim that graphics aren't everything, but playing Ico made me realize they actually count for a whole goddamn lot. If characters in a game look and move like real people would, it helps the world come to life, and even today with all of our fancy billions of polygons on screen not enough games take advantage of this. Ico is a first generation PS2 game, for fuck's sake, and it's quite a bit more visually stunning than a lot of current-gen games I've played. I wasn't not expecting this, since Shadow of the Colossus is a game that I consider perfect in nearly every way it is possible to be perfect, visuals being no small exception, but it's still pretty impressive how something as simple as, say, having Yorda and Ico hold hands while she's in standard "Escort character following" mode is just instantly more powerful an image than it would have been if she'd just been tagging behind you like, say, Ashley and Leon. They also made a point of having her run slightly slower than Ico, making it look like she's struggling to keep up as he pulls her along; that, plus her habit of looking curiously at unimportant pieces of scenery, and her default posture, implies all sorts of things, like fear, confusion, uncertainty, and most importantly, a growing sense of trust for Ico/the player, who she follows despite them constantly pulling her into all sorts of hazardous shit. With Ashley, I felt like I was just protecting her because I wouldn't be able to finish the game otherwise; In Ico I feel like I have to protect Yorda because I'll come off as a complete bastard if I don't. All of this is communicated through the default walk-cycle animations.

Oh, and actually playing the game is pretty neat as well. It's like The Sands of Time without any wire-fu tomfoolery. I dunno if I like it as much as Shadow yet, but it is quite good.

Phoenix Gamma
Feb 8th, 2011, 05:53 PM
Ico pissed me off because Yorda is such a pain in the ass to pull around, and the fights really aren't very fun :\ It'd be cool if the protagonist was older and could just hang her over his shoulder or under his arm. I definitely prefer Shadow of the Colossus in terms of fun.

Someone told me it was less cutscene-heavy than the other games, and in my youthful innocence, I believed him

Really, I don't see the point of adding in a bunch of fancy new camouflage mechanics and a wound-healing system if you're never going to let me play the game. I also don't see the reason you even need to put work into purty graffix if you're going to have half of the cutscenes be still images and line-reading; this is something referred to as a Visual Novel, Kojima, and they're supposed to at least have porn in them to keep my interest. I also also don't see the need to even make this a video game, as you obviously have no enthusiasm for audience participation. Why not write a novel, then go to a hospital and read it to patients in traction for 5 hours a day?

Maybe I should have tried out one of those Sly Cooper games for my sneaking jollies.

Yes

Kojima's got a major problem with "Show, don't tell," apparently, or he thinks everyone who plays his games is a retard

Honestly, I feel like one for not learning from my experience with Twin Snakes. Then again, at least shit fucking happened in that game

I don't even seem to be able to save and quit in MGS3 without having pointless, meandering Seinfeld conversations. I do not need to learn about the history of Godzilla in the middle of a Black Ops mission, nor do I need to have a scene in From Russia with Love described to me, because I have purchased a Metal Gear Solid video game which can only mean that I am a massive nerd who already knows everything about any pointless pop-culture phenomenon you care to name.

Basically what I want MGS to do is shut up and let me be a fucking superspy like it promised it would. Maybe I'll try to play the game without watching any cutscenes or listening to any of the codec chats. I basically know the plot already since /v/ has at least 5 Metal Gear threads every fucking day, so I can just make up scenes in my head in which everything is explained coherently and with a hint of subtlety.

This is the best idea I've had in a while.

Meh, MGS3 was harmless in comparison to 4 if you ask me. I enjoyed 3 quite a bit, since it´s about the only time you play as the cool Snake. I never played the revised version with the better camera but still, I liked it a lot. Way more than 2 at least.

Twin Snakes was...fucking retarded but funny if you knew the original game...and it was fucking expensive so I´m not gonna hate it too much ;)

But I agree, Kojima does have a serious problem in the storytelling-department, he just doesn´t know how to do it right which morphed into his strange and unique style over the years that is not for everyone.
It´s unique but it´s NOT good from a writing-technical point of view.

Alternatively, you'll get to about level 20, enter the dungeon-swag game and realize how incompatable you are with being ordered about by condescending fuckheads with no life

Which, incidentally, is why you should never play TF2 with me.

Playing Ico and MGS3 side by side has made me realize why I hate the latter; since Metal Gear Solid on the Playstation (and indeed, maybe even Metal Gear, which I forgot came with the Subsistence editon of 3), MGS as a franchise has done little to no evolving, and anything resembling changes have all been in the wrong direction, see also the increased tendency towards 20 hour cutscenes and retro-camp-deprecation humor. MGS1 got away with that shit because a, it was relatively conservative about applying silliness lest it mar the super-serious-business dramatic storyline trying to occupy the same space as a sarcastically self-aware low-res stealth game, and two, shit was brand cracking new and seemed to make people collectively realize that games could be just as inclined towards storytime as any other medium.

But while other people took Metal Gear's erection for pushing games into semi-literate territory and have improved upon it - see my previous post on Ico in which I describe the emotions being portrayed by the in-game walk cycle - Metal Gear itself just made the fucking cutscenes longer, effectively doing the opposite of other guys: saying nothing with a million billion words. Per minute.

So, that's what I don't like about Metal Gear as a series: it obstinately refuses to move forward, except to increase the amount of things in it that belong in a cartoon show. Kojima knows the shit out of that, too, since he made Metal Gear Solid 2, but I guess now his mind's just snapped and he's taken to wallowing in his own spunk like Death Proof era Quentin Tarantino. I could also be talking out of my ass since I haven't gotten around to playing Guns of the Patriots yet, but I hightly doubt it!

Although, as a non-ragey aside, the soundtrack in MGS3 is all kinds of awesome. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5b3PqMezmk

They also really nailed the ambient jungle noises, I think, and even though the level design by and large was shitty as hell, I'll find enjoyment wherever there's stealthan to do. And I guess the bosses were ok. I guess. The End and The Fury are major high points, although I was stoned badly fighting Fury so he may have been marginally less terrifying than I originally thought. I also spent the entire game looking forward to fighting The Boss, only to have the camera now be fixed instead of mapped to the right thumbstick, crippling my visibility and forcing me to just put on snow camo and Geisha makeup, hide in an extreme corner and snipe her to death. It worked, but it was stupid.

I've been playing the leak of Crysis 2 and....wow....it's actually good. I hated the first Crysis with a passion because it was a boring, plodding, slog with bulletproof Koreans and a suit powered by hearing aid batteries. The sequel fixes all of the first games problems and actually delivers a convincing narrative with solid gameplay and great pacing. Color me surprised.

FotNS: Ken's Rage. This game is easily the most faithful video game adaptation of anything I've ever seen. And it's so satisfying to pull of a signature move that wipes out a huge crowd of mooks. But how the hell do you decide that the name "Thouzer" is pronounced "sow-zer"?

I want to second what GW was saying about the MGS series. The innovation in that series seems to come on the cinematics side rather than the gameplay side, and the stories in those games are not so great that attention should be drawn to them. A lot of the game series that I most enjoy are guilty of having relatively little change from one game to the next, but it seems like to really enjoy the MGS series, you need to be a fan of Kojima's particular brand of storytelling, which is crummy.

That's why I was so worried when I saw he had even a tangential link to the last Castlevania game. And as it turned out, those concerns were fully justified.

I'm with Fathom Zero I love Metal Gear Solid.

MGS as a franchise has done little to no evolving, and anything resembling changes have all been in the wrong direction, see also the increased tendency towards 20 hour cutscenes and retro-camp-deprecation humor

I know nowadays cutscenes are considered outdated and anathema to game art but you know if what your watching is interesting then I don't see the problem and to be fair there is interactivity in MGS2 and up's cutscenes, it's not a lot but you shouldn't overestimate how much interactivity is needed to keep the player involved. And please don't tell me that Kojima should have just made a movie instead because it wouldn't be the same. Paradoxically, Kojima is probably the best in the business at using video game interactivity for dramatic and comedic effect; The sorrow boss fight, the torture scene in MGS, that scene where you get pissed on in MGS2, etc. Also, retro-camp-deprecation humor is a spot-on bit of wording but I don't see how it's a point against the series.

One thing I can't defend about Metal Gear Solid is Kojima's method of delivering exposition by weaving factual and semi-factual and pseudo-factual information along with his own fictional scenarios. But even this I don't really hate.

Iīm playing GTA4 at the moment cause I never finished it and after several hours Iīm kinda sure this time will end the same...those fucking idiots should learn how to utilize checkpoints.

Itīs NOT fun to drive to the mission three times in a row, not at all. I mean the cues for the checkpoints are there, theyīre in plain sight but noooo, one chance, thatīs all you get.
Got rushed by the last cop in the mission? Sorry, youīre losing 20mins of progress, nothing we can do...

Guitar Woman

They actually did include checkpoints in the middle of missions in both of GTA4's expansions, and fixed most of the other problems people were complaining about. Motorcycles no longer suck, you never get nagged about man-dates anymore, and you can totally pretend like you're playing the opening scene of Akira all the time, especially during the "bikes-plus-baseball-bats" racing minigame.

And please don't tell me that Kojima should have just made a movie instead because it wouldn't be the same.
No, it definitely wouldn't be the same as if he made a movie. I think part of the point of the first game was to show that video games could do things movies couldn't, which is why I liked it. Loved it, even. I also seem to be in the minority when I claim to like MGS2, but I remain steadfastly gay for the direction it took in the second half. Meta, brilliant, probably made on drugs, and I get to be a smug prick with the air of an intellectual when I talk about how deep it is. This is something I like to do. That shit is fruitcake.

Also, retro-camp-deprecation humor is a spot-on bit of wording but I don't see how it's a point against the series.

It boils down to "I just think it's too silly," pretty much. I always had the impression of Metal Gear being a mostly serious drama with a point to make, and anything that seemed too ludicrous to believe I wrote off as a bit of comic relief, or something I thought was retarded but the writers and some of the players might not have. So, watching the sequels, Snake Eater especially, be intentionally ridiculous and point to themselves going "ha ha, look at how camp I am, remember how stupid we used to look?" makes me cringe more than a little bit. The first four seasons of the Doctor Who revival had the same problem, and like with that I get more worked up about the things it's doing wrong because when it does shit right it's an absolute joy to behold.

I'd equate it to having a good friend who is gradually becoming an embarrasing prick because of his crippling cocaine habit. I mean, you love the guy, but you can hardly stand him a good half of the time and don't want to be seen together in public.

But really, maybe all Kojima ever wanted to do was make campy comedies, and he's passive-agressively getting back at us for demanding more Metal Gear and distracting him from his real passions by breaking our hearts. Or, rather, just mine, since I seem to be the only one with a problem. I wouldn't put it past him, crazy dickhead.

Bulletstorm reminds me of games like Turok 3, where you can just shoot enemies all day and they won't die. The level design is modern (read: straight shot to the finish). It just feels completely generic and the story seems like it was written by a emotionally challenged 12 year old. The voice acting isn't funny at all, it's just horrible. Honest to god, one of the actors utters the line "Holy piss shit" in the first level.

It's really sad, I had hope that this was going to be a decent game.

On another note, Dead Space 2 completely failed to scare me and I'm at chapter 11. Do I have anything to look forward to or should I just stop playing?

On Zealot mode, you get half the ammo in drops; 3 plasma charges, 2 (sometimes 1) force gun/ripper ammo, I think 16 pulse rounds... It sucks, but I got used to it pretty quick.

Tried the demo for "Dungeons" last night.

It has some of the Dungeon Keeper feel to it, but I didn't really like the gameplay as a whole. Instead of accumulating wealth and fending off snooping heroes, you have to build up wealth and use it to bait heroes to visit your dungeon, killing them only after they've had their fill of your gold (filling their "need" bar), but before they can escape. You can lay down monster lairs, but the monsters mainly exist to fill the heroes' combat "need" bar. Plus, they never leave their lairs for any reason.

So whenever you need to kill a hero, you have to do it yourself with your evil avatar. It sounds fulfilling, but in practice you feel more like you're micromanaging a daycare center.

There were so many irritating bits in that game, like the bizarre eavesdropping mechanic, and the finicky chokeout mechanic, and the awful combat. Stealth was interesting, though.

Edit: so I subconciously wrote "awesome" instead of "awful" combat, so maybe it wasn't as bad as I remember.

So I went to play some of my old PC games since I was feeling nostalgic, but I've given up in fury.

Lost Total Annihilation.

Lost the CD keys for Supreme Commander.

Lost Dark Reign and am rubbish at computers so I can't download it or anything like that.

Red Alert 2 disc is scratched or broken or whatever; starts to run then just stops.

with like 20 minutes of dicking around you could probably figure out how to download a torrent and use it. total annhilation would probably take like five minutes to download :O :O well maybe in hour in australia

You need a photo of your receipt or of the box. If I had the box the CD key would be inside so I wouldn't be in this problem, and I don't have a receipt. Nor do I have the energy to ring up the company and organise all that shit.

I did look around for torrents and shite but I got bored.

Turns out Medieval 2 Total War will work with 1111-1111-1111-1111 as the CD key, which is awesome.

Got it for PS3 yesterday and played the first chapter. Doesn´t look very good and tears a bit but it´s a fun little game. I especially like that you have a use for your points in the campaign (you buy ammo, charge-ammo and upgrades with them).

In terms of story, the game is über-stupid but I like that somehow. Doesn´t take itself very serious which is a good thing. kicking people into cacti and screaming fuck and dick at the top of your lungs is not exactly highlevel poetry...

Borderlands. Never played it, 'cause it didn't seem too interesting. A friend of mine kept bugging me about it, so I went ahead and bought it. Been playing it in co-op mode and I must admit that this game is totally radical. It's basically just Diablo in first person mode and post-apocalyptic scenery, but then again, I fucking love Diablo.

Also been re-playing Zelda a bit. I realized the other day that my opinion on Zelda is pretty much "It's the Star Wars of video games," by which I mean "I feel so bad about comparing these games to anything else because I love them so goddamn much that they will always win." Not to mention the way both serieses boil down the essential tropes of their respective genres and then inflate them to ridiculously iconic levels, and how they got pretty horrible all of a sudden. Zelda's even got its own equivalent to the Holiday Special, the CD-i games.

I haven't played any of the handheld games past Oracles, despite owning all three. Capcom doesn't do Zelda very well.

Although I could be mixed up in thinking they did the two DS games, maybe I'll give those a shot. Here's hoping they don't fuck Skyward Sword up as badly as Twilight Princess.

Nice thing abut this is that there are plenty of torrents that include every add-on pack ever, official and fan-made

Problem is no more online play, which is turrible. The game ran silky-smooth on the laptop I had before I had to trade up for a macbook, no matter how much madness was hordeing up the screen... some guys did some sort of downloadable online-only version or something, though. Not sure if that's still going or what

Aw, I liked the GB and GBA games. Especially Four Swords. That shit was awesome.

As for the DS games...they're Nintendo made, but Phantom Hourglass is pretty shit. Only one good puzzle (wasn't even in a dungeon :T) and the rest of it was just a less interesting Wind Waker crammed into a tech demo. Spirit Tracks won me over though. The Zelda partner mechanic gets really cool later on, the puzzles are a little better, the writing is actually pretty funny a few times, and the whole game is just more fun.

The difference is akin to the smell of freshly-baked bread invading your personal space after having a lump of shit taped under your nose for about a year.

I mean, I got my ass kicked, but it felt like the other guy deserved it. I actually didn't expand at all during the match because I didn't realize you were supposed to; you try that shit on Fastest and you're going to be looking down the noses of about 4,000 hydralisks before you even get a Supply Depot up.

Yea, they're made by the same dudes (the Tactics guys got swallowed by Square). Normally, Tactics Ogre would be the prototype for FFT, but the PSP remakes are whole other beasts. Mostly TO doesn't lag like a motherfucker. Also TO has this rad feature that lets you jump back as many as 50 turns. And since the story has branching paths, instead of replaying it multiple times to see everything, you can beat it once, then revisit points in the game with your current troops and see different outcomes. It's really awesome.

Also you can't make your party members a bunch of walking ubergods who destroy whole universes with every step. This is either good or bad depending on if you like shattering FFT's difficulty curve over your knee.

So I got on TF2 for the first time in four months and I was bombarded by tons of people wanting to trade with me because, apparently, I've got rare items. I ordered Sam & Max during the first week of release and I got the Big Kill, Lugermorph, and Max's Severed Head. Any one of these items, (save the Lugermorph, because it became unlockable later), are worth over a hundred dollars in real dollars.

Between those and all of the vintage items I have, I could make a LOT of money if I sold them.

So I'm having a crisis. Prestige or dollars? I'm a student, but even several hundred dollars will barely make a dent in anything.

It´s...I don´t know how to describe it...it´s more relaxed. There´s healers everywhere, you seem to level way quicker this time around and the TMs (don´t know how they´re called in the english Version) are not one-time items anymore so you can experiment as much as you want. A steal for 25 bucks a piece...oh and it looks good too :)

I'm guessing it doesn't have the 1000 million level dungeon at the end where you can get that item that can turn a level 100 person into a level 1 person and they keep all of their stats and shit?
also the item so you can turn those people you turned into level 1's a million times into a weapon?

Phoenix Gamma
Mar 6th, 2011, 07:48 PM
Uh, I'm just about at the end of the game and haven't seen anything remotely like that. The game forces you to specialize each character instead of giving them everything and the kitchen sink. So for instance I give my two mages two different elements each; one element is shared, one is unique. That way I'm still covering three different weaknesses, and since hitting an enemy with a spell sometimes makes them weak to that element, I can have both mages spam the same element and wreck the stronger enemies.

Oh! But levelling is different in the remake! It's like Valkyria Chronicles: you level up the classes, not the individuals. So recruiting a Knight will boost him to whatever level your knights are instantly. Unless it's a class you've never used, you don't have the grind their level, just their skill points (and they get the same amount as everyone else at the end of a battle so they don't have to do jackshit.)

Bought Serious Sam: The Second Encounter on the Arcade. So far it's pretty fun, but not as challenging as I expected. Most of my deaths have come from failing platforming sequences, and not the hordes of enemies it promised.
Also, the item placements and level designs are kind of irritating. A lot of the time, I've been in huge, open fields, with MAYBE 40 enemies at once, and items obscured by tall grass. It becomes a chore, scrounging around trying to find that health vial you swore you saw.

Certain items do, now. Used to just be that there were hats and a couple unlockable weapons, but I didn't play for something like four months and there's a lot of new shit. Because I've had the items that I do for a long time, they are of a "Vintage" status as well, which also makes them highly desirable.

If you could share it with absolutely anybody that knows video games or TF2, I'd appreciate.

Anyway, if you havenīt played it and you got some hours to spare, give it a try, itīs pretty good.

i got that too, it's pretty fun. I was sure it was a remake of that "Motherload" flash game, but i guess it's just a suspiciously similar game :eek

Also, Wind Waker in 1080p in Dolphin is really pretty.
This took some sleuthing for me to decipher I guess that means I'm out of the loop. Wind Waker was my favorite Zelda game by the way.

Was listening to some NWA and it made want to play San Andreas again.

Dolphin was the code name for the Wii back in about 1999.

On a related note, I pre-ordered the 3DS. It remains to be seen if this is a good idea or not, as this is the first time I've been apprehensive about getting a new system (of sorts).

I got Baldur's Gate 2! To hell with your fancy graphics!

I wanted to play a Mage, but as per usual in WRPGs the magic-based class is completely worthless, so I switched to Thief. Which is also worthless since the stealth doesn't seem to do much, and I didn't know the only thief skillz that mattered were detecting and disarming traps.

It's... fun? I sat down to take a work break for about 30 minutes and ended up playing it for 3 hours without realizing, but I'm not really sure whether I was enjoying myself or not. Such is the nature of Bioware, I guess.

You have to stick it out with a mage. They suck early game but nuke ass later. If I remember correctly there are a few spell caster types. I believe its the sorcerer you want.

I'm really enjoying Dragon Age 2 as well. I like how they streamlined everything and made the combat fun.

On another note, I just played Homefront and it's pretty bad. It looks like a hi-rez Xbox game and plays like Call of Duty 1.5. The multiplayer is different though. I was actually excited for this game, but it's a huge letdown :(

Playing Dragon Age: Origins.

The more I play this game, the more I hate it. I'm finding I need to quicksave after every successful fight because every single one has the potential to end it disaster. I particularly like that certain enemies (even low-level enemies) can choose to knock one of your characters down and beat them to death while you look on in horror.

Also, who the hell at Bioware thought it would be a good idea to have a character who hates it when you take on/complete side quests?

Oh, and fights with revenants are hilarious, both in how quickly they end and in how unexpectedly they pop up. Imagine any other game where you can stumble upon a boss fight wherein the boss wipes out half the hit points of your entire party with one swing.

What am I missing about this game that makes it fun instead of just frustrating?

Mass Effect does have the better combats imo. Less managing, more fighting.

The second Dragon Age seems to be a bit better in that department too. I just had a fight against 4 mages and about 17million skeletons but with just a little coordination, I was able to beat them, even without a tank.

You do get a designated healer again by the way, it helps, but not as much as Wynne did, at least that´s my impression.

But the best thing about DA2: It doesn´t have these lameass boring slow battles D&D is so well known for. They´re fast, they´re brutal and they´re over rather quickly. Even the mages are fast. Though I really don´t know how to skill mine. Made him a primal mage so far, petrifying dudes and throwing lightning. It´s ok I guess.

Dragon Age must be pretty fucking bad to have worse combat than Gears of War style barrier-cowering.

That said, I downloaded Mass Effect with the intention of maxing out my sniping skill or whatever as early as possible and just breezing through every combat sequence from 4 miles away so I could enjoy the story, which I've said before is pretty aight. I'll probably have to give up on making a FemShep, since she always seems to get major turtle-lip no matter how far I make her chin jut out, and I end up playing as a space librarian.

When I played Dragon Age I just turned the difficulty down to the lowest setting. I'd feel lame doing that with most games but I only play Bioware games for their stories. From the little amount I did play on normal it seemed unreasonable difficult.

You had to add that, didn't you?

My difficulties with the game stem from a number of different factors, I'm finding. In particular, I have only 5 party members, not one of them a dedicated healer, so that's complicating things a little. I also don't have access to any AoE spells yet, which is what every guide I've looked at recommends you use for all the troublesome fights I've encountered.

So really, the big problem here is that I didn't do the main quest in order. Had I realized there was a specific order that these things need to be done in, believe me, I would have gone directly to the mage tower first off. I guess I just didn't expect Bioware to give me the illusion of choice like that.

Personally I don't like these types of rpgs. Their mechanics feel convoluted to me and the more novel abilities like stealth or trap making are rarely intuitive and often useless. Early in Dragon Age I got to a segment where I needed to get past a group of revenants in order to collect a quest item. Having had my ass destroyed several times getting to this point I decided to sneak past them. I was playing, in my mind, as a taciturn dwarf rouge with a secret heart of gold so this made sense to me. The game wouldn't allow it though, maybe what I was trying was possible but I never figured out how. Here's where I turned the difficulty down and breezed through the rest of the game.

Played the 3DS at PAX East. I'm legitimately impressed now. Especially by the AR game; a lot of the games I played were like PSP games, but on a DS, but the AR card game really blew my mind. There's an absurd amount of potential with that device, and I'm really excited to see what comes out for it. The target practice with the AR had some moments that were just fantastic, and the 3D effects are pretty cool.

I was sad, though; Kid Icarus is completely unplayable for us lefties, and even if it was, the controls are a tad rubbish. Pretty as hell, though. The two chicks cosplaying as Saria and Shiek playing Ocarina of Time with me made up for this though.

Also played some other games. Duke Nukem's booth was hilarious and the demo was fun, Child of Eden is pretty cool, and FEZ almost makes me want a 360. Overall, it was a fantastic show and infinitely better than last year's PAX East. Fucking huge show floor, from the big Portal 2 booth to the classy as fuck Duke Nukem setup (complete with chandelier and the trashiest booth babes I've ever seen), to a giant fucking Pikachu balloon floating over probably four other nonNintendo booths.

Following ONE person's jabbering is fine, sure. Not when three other people show up and turn a small conversation about David Alfarro Siquieros into a forty-five minute conversation about the differences between their personal goddamned video game characters, what items said characters have, what items they HAVE had at some point in time, what plot points those characters have encountered, and how specific plot points were affected by specific VOICE ACTORS, followed by an emotional and graphic portrayal (complete with elaborate hand gestures and body movement) about how this one orc chieftain totally picked this one dude up by the throat and was all like "YOU ARE DISMISSED" and dropped the dude into an interdimensional rift and it was so AWESOME, wasn't it AWESOME, it was just GREAT.

Once is enough. Three times a week is annoying as fuck. Talk about SOMETHING, ANYTHING else. JUST ONCE.

You should get some new objective as the murderer where you have to methodically kill the other players one by one while avoiding capture.
Also, bought and beat Black Ops. I liked the story, but it didn't feel as intense as MW2's story. It was less 'I REALLY WANT TO KICK SOME ASS', and more 'I wonder why he's crazy. Oh he was brainwashed. Cool.'
Also, gotta love the ridiculous, last-minute "FUCK YEAH AMERICA!" shot at the end of the game. How they mobilized all those infantry and battleships to Cuba that quick is a fucking miracle.

I've gotta give props to Bioware for letting me play Mass Effect as basically a gunhappy Jon Pertwee. With tits.

I kinda love being a diplomatic hero instead of just shooting everyone. Maybe one day there'll be a video game where you don't even have to fight anyone, you can just talk your way out of literally every encounter by being awesome enough.

I plan to never switch Tali and Wrex out of my party if I can help it, fuck those other guys. Except maybe Garrus, he's all right. I'm also not sure if the game engine is just really good or if my computer is better than I give it credit for, but I'm running it on high settings with no slowdown and shit looks great.

The driving parts are not nearly as horrifying as I was led to believe, although the PC port could have had the Mako's handling tweaked or something. I also accidentally made FemShep's face hilariously grotesque; the back half of her skull got left really wide because I couldn't find the slider bar for it, so her giant lumpy meathead tapers creepily into the face one might expect from a lithe french gymnast. It looked fine on the character creation screen, but this is like the 5th fucking time I've accidentally made an ugly mutant Shepard and I'm starting to resent myself for being a total failure at pixel sculpting. I was avoiding having to look at pyramid-face by wearing a helmet all the time, but I've only just left the Citadel and I'm not sure I've put my skill points into the right stuff, as is usually the case with Bioware's shite, so I'd probably be better off starting over now instead of getting all the way to the final boss and having my ass utterly handed to me due to improper skill development. Cough cough KOTOR.

Not that I'm complaining, since I actually really like this game. Also, the sound seems a bit buggy; in proper cutscenes I'm able to hear everyone talking over the music and ambient noises, but idle chatter between my party members is drowned out by everything else like they're standing on the other side of a city block whispering at me.
