Ok. I doubled back and found that doorway at the blacksmith in the undead parish that I had forgotten about. Killed the demon guy inside and went into the depths. Fought my way to some giant butterfly thing that quickly ate my ass because I didnt have any more bolts for my crossbow as I used them to kill a bunch of the lantern guys in the catacombs. :\ However I did get some sweet elite knight armor, so not all bad. Doubled back again in the depths and found some giant hydra looking thing that spit water at me and killed me. :( Doubled back again and found some black knight dude who I actually managed to kill in a straight up fight without being a total cheap ass. Fought my way on to the vally of the fucking drakes and those bastards suck balls. My axe doesnt seam to be doing much to them. :\

Ok, go back to the butterfly, but make sure you're human. The last staircase before the fight will have a white summon sign on it. Summon that witch, and she'll fuck the butterfly up for ya.
I think that after that, I went to Blight Town, but I took the entrance through the bottom of the Undead Burg, which is through the depths. The depths was pretty easy, so don't worry too much about that part. Blight town is fucking horrrrrible, though.
Alternately, you can get to Blight Town through the Valley of the Drakes if you want to avoid the parts with all the falls and just deal with all the poison. You'd miss a lot of loot, though.

Some enemies drop humanity and Iīm sure you have Items that give them, theyīre like the soul items. Make sure you have at least 1 humanity (you know, the number in the top left), rest at a bonfire and turn human.
As a human, thereīs a chance that a NPC-Phantom will enter the game in most areas. Beat them and you gain the ability to summon them for the boss battles. Most of the time, there are summoning marks right before a boss (goldish writing on the floor) but you can only see those as a human.
The point of being human is that others can help you, you can help others and the dropchance for loot goes up.
Skyrim is officially awesome. I just did the 2nd or 3rd mainquest and climbed a fucking mountain. Everything feels so organic this time, handcrafted. The caves, dungeons, Mines, everything has character.

SKYWARD SWORD :rock:rock:rock:rock:rock:rock:rock:rock
The intro is a little long but once you fly to the surface, it really picks up. The combat is really hard this time around, and even skulltulas take a little puzzle solving to beat. I also like that there's a dash this time around to speed up running, climbing, and swimming.
Also they're really pushing the whole "Zelda wants Link's balls" angle harder than they ever have. If he doesn't penetrate her by the end credits I'm gonna be miffed. Fi isn't as cool as Midna though :(

Zomboid
Nov 12th, 2011, 12:43 AM
Go up to the highest level in that area where you can look down onto the area where you fight the dragon, and as you get closer to the stairs going down, there's a spot where you can pick him off with arrows. He counts as a mini-boss and doesn't respawn. I suggest getting a longbow or something because you can aim from pretty far away with those. I actually leveled the shit out of my composite bow, and it ended up being really useful in a lot of situations. Poison arrows are great.
Also, I started Skyrim. Looks gorgeous and it's fun, but I restricted myself to under two hours. I killed bandits in a mine and got to that first town. I like the smithing! Oh, and I did some finishing blow where I spun around and buried my two-handed axe into a bear's open mouth. Fucking awesome.

Played Skyrim for several hours. I just scratched the surface of the game, and I know it, but my Game of the Year is tentatively Dark Souls, still.
There's not enough variety in the environments in Skyrim, to me. I'll see as I go farther into it, of course. Having a lot of fun with the intrigue involved in the mage's university storyline. Also, the random dragon encounters are quite silly. One showed up as I was walking out of the main hall of the school and ten mages proceeded to blow the thing apart in seconds. It was beautiful. The story is boring me, but the amount of power-players and factions in the game that are involved in the main story is really cool.
Also fuck Giants.
k0k0
Nov 12th, 2011, 10:09 PM
They should have made the giants the things fucking up everything. Those giants kill me a ton faster than a shitty dragon does. I wanna be giantborn.
Oh, and I know I said this before, but being a werewolf absolutely blows. I mean, you look bad ass, but you can't get any bonuses from sleeping and you can't use potions/items while you're changed. I am enjoying the hell out of the storyline for the werewolf clan though.
How do you get up to the top of the mountain? I've been trying every fucking spot of this fucking mountain so that I can talk to the graybeards or whatever about my dragon powers. I can't figure out exactly where to start the climb.

Just finished the Dark Brotherhood stuff. Gets pretty crazy at the end. Also, the return of Shadowmere. :O
I think I like Dark Souls more than Skyrim because I've just gotten so sick of being THE CHOSEN ONE in every video game. Even though you're the "chosen undead" in Dark Souls, it doesn't feel like it. You're meeting and saving all of these NPCs, running around, and meeting them again farther and farther into the game. It feels like you're just of many similarly skilled people running around. Everyone is doing their own adventuring toward their own goals and it's up to you to make your own way and eventually beat Gwyn, crossing paths with fellow adventurers as you go. And the sense of scale in the fights was real. You felt intimidated and it didn't surprise you if a badguy four stories taller than you beats you, whereas in Skyrim, you can take down Skeletons, Wolves, and Draugr like they were nothing, but dare to kill a Troll? PFFT. Hope you enjoy popping potions and getting chased down in seconds.
It's weird to say that Dark Souls feels less cheap than Skyrim. But I felt like I knew where I was going in terms of my character in Dark Souls and I'm just spending perks willy-nilly in Skyrim, waiting for the next not-boss to keep me from completing a quest.

Attunement slots is how they handle magic and other stuffs. When you buy the things, you equip them in a slot at bonfires. Some of them may require two slots. Level up the attunement thing and you get more slots. It's required if you're a magicky-type character, because you can double up on spells and get more of them. Otherwise, you're going to run out quickly.
Strength works well, but if you intend to upgrade your weapons down other paths like Divine, Magic, Chaos, etc., then you'd prolly want to put some into things like faith, magic, and dexterity. Dexterity is important because it affects most of the weapons in the game, sometimes moreso than strength. Good job putting a lot in endurance early. If I were to do something over again, that would've been it. It was a bitch not being able to move around properly in what would've been, to anyone else, light armor. As a result, I was knocked around like a pinball in fights because I had no Poise.

Beat Skyward Sword this morning. I was going to wait until I got 100% of the stuff, but I reached a point in the story where I got really ancy and just had to see how it ended. I'll go back though because I think I probably have 80-90% of everything, which is a lot for a first-time playthrough.
After this game, I don't think I could play Zelda on a regular controller anymore. The controls are that good. (Except for the bird. That kinda sucked.) It's also hard as fuck because every enemy has specific ways of fighting them, and all of the puzzles are brand new this time. You don't even light any torches!
Nintendo LOVES torches!
Only complaint is that the Wii can't pump out the graphics that the artists intended. That and there were a little too many silly quests forced into the main game. For the most part, though, it was excellent. I'd say it's in the top three of the entire series.

I tried the Survival game mode on MW3 yesterday, and it's actually pretty fun. They give you a lot of maps, each with enough room to move around, but still small enough that there's pressure. I really like how the global-warming setting and the whole melting of the icecaps-stuff creates a scenario where I don´t question the factions´ decisions to settle on super-small islands all the time, it´s simply all that´s left :)
Now, I´ve never played the Anno-games very extensively but this feels at the same time a bit slimlined and more user-friendly but I can´t really say why...I guess it´s because of EVE, the AI telling you what´s wrong all the time, giving advice and managing the massive encyclopedia-function of the game.
Gameplaywise it seems to be how I remember Anno. Build houses, satisfy demands to level up your population and get access to more buildings.
It all just feels cooler this time around. Sure, I plant rice fields in the beginning to create booze for my Tychoons (stupid name btw) but later on, I built outposts on neighbouring islands to drill for oil, process and manufacture it into plastics on-site to ship it back to my main island.
It´s just plain fun to watch all the buildings operate as this game is really really pretty, no matter if you build a nice and green Eco-Island or some dense, smoggy Tychoon-Settlement. I haven´t tried out the military aspect so I can´t comment on that yet.
And hey, even the campaign is fun so far :)

Batman: AC is pissing me off. Started up my new game plus save again and the autosave broke. Every time I go by the GCPD building Vicki Vale keeps asking to be rescued even though she has been. Then the autosave never kicks in after that point... Trying to figure out the issue. Hate losing playtime.

That's a common marketing strategy for Square. They released the first three SaGa games over here as Final Fantasy Legends, and the third Legends game is used as a template for Mystic Quest. By the way, Mystic Quest was localized in Japan as Final Fantasy USA: Mystic Quest which I can only see as a way of slighting Americans, which is pretty funny.

You bought this game for the story? What the hell man? The story was stupid in the second one aswell, but that didn't stop the game from being FUN. SR3 is an extremely fun co-op game where everything is over the top and stupid. In a good way. If you're looking for a gripping storyline, I suggest finding a game where you don't slap people in the face with a giant dildo while wearing a string bikini and a trashcan on your head.
Fathom Zero
Dec 9th, 2011, 04:21 PM
The story in the second one was absolutely fantastic. The characters were all interesting and I can remember every one of them. It'd be pure luck if I could name any of the Saints in the Third, besides Johnny Gat and they killed him in the first ten fucking minutes. There's no conflict in the third game. I'm constantly unlocking more and more overpowered weaponry and I never feel like my character is being at all challenged.
Compare that to the first one where your character has to break out of prison and start with absolutely nothing, rebuilding the fallen empire. The same thing happens in the third game, except you get everything nearly everything back in the second mission and antagonist after antagonist falls until you're ultimately left with a shitty paramilitary organization.
If anything, it's made me more excited for GTA V, where I can do crazy shit and the story is actually shown some care.

I liked Ghirahim. Zelda hasn't had an active villain before, so it was nice to have someone routinely antagonize you instead of waiting to fight you at the end of the game. The final dual with him in just fantastic. It feels great to finally put an end to that fucker, and the game really builds up that moment.
My only gripe with SS is that the sky is pretty empty. I'd like flying a lot more if there were fun pitstops to make. That, and Fi is a shitty sidekick from a narrative and a gameplay standpoint. Other than that, everything is very solid. Exploration is more like Link's Awakening, which was more like Metroid. So that's cool. The combat is fantastic. The dungeons are really, really good (except the second fire dungeon. Why is there a second fire dungeon?) Ancient Cistern and the pirate ship are easily in the top 10 of the whole series.

Summers --> Boat ---> Defeat the Kraken --> Scaraba --> Pyramid is locked --> Wait hold on a second you gotta go back to Fourside, enter the sewers from the dinosaur museum, "Your Sanctuary" #5, get Carrot Key, "Your Sanctuary" #6 --> OK, now we're back on track, go back to history museum in Summers and get the code to open the pyramid

Yeah that section of the game always confused me a bit. The guy in the museum seems to know Poo, or it's implied that he does, but there's nothing in the game to suggest that, and you get so little backstory on Poo compared to the others anyway that it kind of comes out of nowhere. I wonder if something is lost in translation or if there's just something I missed. I think the game expects you to have wandered around Fourside enough to be really really curious about that sparkly silver pyramid hidden in the white-trashed-out back yard of the department store and still remember it like 4 hours later into the game and then just sort of follow things from there.
Seconded. All I heard about that game was that it looked great, but then you play the demo and realize it's no fun. Also, low-res textures.
GameStop knocked El Shaddai's price down to 20 bux new a few days ago and I ended up picking it up and I have to say that after initially hating the demo, the full game is actually remarkably underrepresented by it. The demo drops you in the middle of chapter 3, which is probably the grindiest chapter in the game, with no context whatsoever about how to effectively fight so you just default to mashing buttons. El Shaddai's combat is actually much deeper than it seems at first glance. It's kind of like Devil May Cry in that everything is based on timing and rhythm, although from my experience you can at least kind of brute force your way through DMC by mashing buttons while you can't really do that so well in ES. The game uses an interesting rock-paper-scissors mechanic where one of the three weapons is more effective against another, which is more effective against the third, which is more effective against the first. It forces you to change the way you approach enemies on the fly since you may need to steal one's weapon to beat another.
There are also a lot of 2D platforming sections that are pretty fun and the LSD craziness is always a plus for me. The game is certainly not worth $60, but for $20 it's a fantastic little brawler that will undoubtedly go completely ignored by basically everybody.

The other half of the time I am cursing life itself. When they put the two different aspects of the game together like this (i.e: the side scrolling old sonic versus the 3D abomination of new sonic) do they not realise that one is a good game while the other is a pile of absolute tripe? Everything about the new style of sonic is bad. Not just the gameplay; absolutely everything.

I finished Resistance 3 the other day. Way better than the first two, a lot of fun.
Also, I invested a little in my local indie developer (not really local) and bought Evochron Mercenary and E.Y.E. - Divine Cybermancy on Steam.
Evochron is a nice little Spaceflight game, think Privateer. Everything is being kept rather small, no Battlecruisers in this game but lots of freeform exploration. You can even land on planets and mine their stuff or dock at cities.
E.Y.E. on the other hand is...just plain weird yet awesome. It´s a...well a FPS/RPG/Mushroomtrip set in a highly dystopian future around 2300, you take on the role of some kind of cybernetic samurai-monk-enforcer-thing to do...something.
I honestly don´t know what the game is really about because it was made by a bunch of French dudes and...yeah, their english isn´t the best apparently (and no, I don´t speak french, english and german and that´s all I can do, sorry ;)).
From what I can gather, there are aliens and mutants and then there´s those samurai dudes that are generically enhanced by these alien genes and they can also do Ninja-magic and have Cybertech up their asses too.
So basically, I´m a gun toting Cyborg that can summon illusory Doppelgängers like Naruto all while hacking into someones mind to make his head explode. Unless that person counter-hacks me and floods my HUD with smilies and Ads... in which case I have to hack myself to get rid of all the Malware :D
I like it a lot but it´s a bit unstable sadly. Oh and it has 32 player Coop.

Still playing Dark Souls. I love this game, but there are some things that make the game less FUN hard, and more 'Goddammit Japan what the fuck is your problem" hard.
1. It has a habit of throwing enemies at you that you CANNOT beat. It's bad enough that most of the bosses are either piss easy or have to be beaten with an exploit, but sometimes the game decides to throw enemies at you in an area you just beat that are just impossible. After beating Ceaseless Discharge, I went on down to the cooled lava it just made, and immediately, some demon that ran twice as fast as me sprints up and one-hits me through my shield. Not fun at all.
2. Pitfalls. I wouldn't mind them so much if the game didn't throw them fucking EVERYWHERE. The Blighttown was the worst, because literally the entire level is hoping you don't get knocked off to your death.
3. Invaders. There have been way too many times when I've been trying to summon my friend into my game, when some meta-gaming asshole spawns in, decked out with crazy awesome gear I didn't even know existed and mathematically chosen stats, and immediately just rush up and one-hit me. I wouldn't mind it so much, but if you want to play with friends, then you can ALWAYS be invaded at any time. There needs to be a way to block them.

Those were annoying, but if you can get past that first part and get down to the bonfire, you can sprint past the rest and get to a tougher version of that asylum demon--but he has the same basic strategies, so it's significantly easier.
I sorta wanna play this again.

I finally got around to playing Quake 4 the other day and fully expected to ditch it soon after, but it actually turned out to be a really good game and a continuation of Quake 2's story--it felt like a 90s shooter, but modernized it well unlike Duke Forever. Then it got crazy repetitive, but I still finished it. Then I tried the multiplayer and it's exactly like Quake 3 and basically an entirely different game from the single-player and there's an experience there that just doesn't seem to exist anymore in modern multiplayer shooters. It's divine in a lot of ways. Also a ton of Quake 3 deathmatch maps are back.
Still wondering what Quakes 2 and 4 have to do with 1 or 3. WHERE DOES SHUB-NIGGURATH FIT?
So Quake 4 is really damn good and I recommend it. A cursory glance at wikipedia says it came out in 2005 which is exactly what my guess was, so I guess I can still stand by my claim that modern shooters suck buckets of dicks.

Just beat The Doctor Who Cloned Me, the single player DLC for Duke Nukem Forever (PC version, the console version is quite crappy, I've heard). It was great. Very well paced and the levels were better than the levels in the main game. Couple of good jokes were thrown in there too. A bit too short (3-4 hours), but that is the world we live in now. DLC's up the ying yang.

It's like going into a 7-11 where wildly swinging your sword all over the place is fine but once you try to pick up a bag of Cheetos some asshole in a helmet gets all up in your shit.
And then they will just fucking POP UP out of nowhere. Nah, youīre not allowed to sell or buy the game but I think thereīs no law against possessing it. Even if there was, what do I care.
Funny thing is, the guy that sold it to me had it sitting on his shelf right in the open, he can still get in serious trouble for that :D
And there isnīt even a censored german version of the game, cause as the legend goes, they made one, but somehow one or two swastikas slipped through QA or maybe even the USK (our Pegi/ESRB) and there it was, the half-censored version and it had to be pulled from all shops and they never bothered to make another attempt at it.
Thereīs a lot of games that share Wolfensteinīs status. Condemned 2 and The Darkness too I think. Fuck, DOOM was just taken off our index last year, go figure :lol
Same old story. Tits yay, Violence nay.
Anyway, I took a brief break from the awesome Amalur to play through The Darkness 2 (which again has been censored for our beautiful Lollypopcountry so now thereīs no dismemberments, no ragdoll and again the Darkness eats souls insteas of hearts. But of course, no one in their right mind would buy that, so we all get the austrian version) which is supposed to be extremely short, about 4-5 hours.
On one hand, itīs a shame, on the other the gameplay is not diverse enough for much more, same as with any shooter really. But the time you do spend with the game is a lot of fun, using the different Darkness-abilities and stuff like that. Oh and Jackie has apparently learned how to reload a gun, so we have that :lol

Well, when I think about it...which of the two is more dangerous for children? Sex or Violence...it´s not like there´s tits on every corner here, I just think we Europeans in general deal with that specific topic in a more...healthy or natural way than the US, just my observation. Violence on the other hand...well, I guess that´s still because of the wars back then...
Anyway, on to happier thoughts. Finished Darkness 2 yesterday after about 7 or 8 hours I would say. Short but sweet game, a perfect rental title if you ask me.
Also, hour 20 has passend in Kingdoms of Amalur and I´m still loving it. It DOES feel like a SP MMO every now and then though, kind of like you´re the only one on a live server...but that´s okay with me, there´s more than enough to do there, everyone and their granny has a quest for you.
And after I tried being a magical Rogue for a while, I respecced back to pure Rogue, it´s just more fun that way since I don´t need spells for anything anyway, I either shoot everyone with my bow or stab them into next week with my daggers. And I finally found a better chestpiece, the old one looked really stupid...

Played through AC: Revelations. I did like ACII a lot, but if I wasn't getting these games for cheap, I think I'd have dumped the series by now.
I'll just go ahead and restate the obvious: they're just applying minor changes in the game that really don't enhance the gameplay at all, and at times seem to have just the opposite effect. I can honestly say, for example, that I never thought to myself, "Assassin's Creed is fun, but you know what it really needs: a tower defense mini-game!"
I'm mainly in because I'm curious to see how they're going to wrap up that framing device where Mr. Bland in the future is supposed to be doing stuff when he's not in the VR machine watching his ancestor gouge people's faces with a giant meat hook. They give you a little more at the end of this one, but the more they expand, the weaker and more strained the plot becomes.
They reveal that the super-advanced civilization that came before was wiped out by some massive solar flare that destroyed their cities and wiped out most of them. Not all. Most.
The head wizard, or whoever it is that explains it all to you at the end, goes onto say that the survivors worked with the surviving humans to rebuild. That their civilization was destroyed I understand. What I don't get is why there's no real evidence of their existence, in the form of ruined buildings or historical records (they built skyscrapers, I assume they knew how to make paper).
Oh, and when a couple of assassins are kidnapped, Ezio tells his team that they cannot negotiate with kidnappers. Then, when his girlfriend is kidnapped a few hours later, he can't cave to the kidnapper's demands fast enough. I guess being a hypocrite is supposed to be covered by his "nothing is true, everything is permitted" creed.

I got a PS Vita because I have a problem where I have to buy handhelds at launch >:
It's a fucking great system. The firmware needs some tweaking, but the launch lineup is probably the best lineup a handheld has ever had. Lumines, UMvC3, Rayman, and Uncharted are all really good. I love how you can add a custom soundtrack to any game. I plan on sticking to entirely digital downloads for all of the games because fuck carrying game cards.
It could be my favorite handheld ever if they just patch the firmware enough to get rid of a few weird design choices and keep the game library as strong as it is now.
Also, people need to hack this thing pronto. After playing this thing for three days, my iPhone and 3DS just look silly, and I want some emulators on this bad boy. Prettiest screen ever.

Feb 17th, 2012, 11:48 PM
:sigh: I really don't want to buy a Vita. I bought a PSP at launch and didn't really play it much in the 3-ish years I had it, outside of the Megaman remakes. I eventually sold it and like an idiot bought another one when the announced the Ys games were coming out here. Sill, I don't play it that often.
Today at work I was able to try out a Vita and I have mixed feelings on it. I love the screen on it, it really is beautiful. I like the feel of it too, it's a bit larger than the PSP and I could see comfort in long play sessions not being much of an issue. I also like the idea of non-disk based games. The PSP had some really crappy load times in some games and I was always worried about games skipping. However, the few demos I tried out on the Vita had some pretty long load times as well. The analogue sticks feel crappy, they were very loose and didn't have much give to them... I don't really know how to word that better. To me it feels like you move it at all and you're already pressing it as far as it goes. (if that makes any sense)
Also, outside of two games (that are both already on PS3) I don't see anything really worthwhile to pick up at launch. I did check out a confirmed game release list though, and here's where I started the sighing.
There's a motherfucking Ys 4 remake coming out for it. I love Falcom games and I'm really happy to see their games come out in the states, but goddamn it. I really really don't want to drop $250+ for one game. Hopefully when it does come out over here the price of Vita will have dropped.
Phoenix Gamma
Feb 18th, 2012, 04:57 AM
The reason the sticks don't have much range on them is because they're stumpy because it's a handheld. If they added more physical range to the sticks, they'd be jutting out even more. Its actual input is a lot better than the old nub was though.
The only game I have right now with bad load times is MvC3. I dunno what the fuck Capcom did, but even the menus have load times. It's bad. The other games I have aren't anywhere near that level of bloatedness. (And for what it's worth, PSP games load faster)
The launch lineup isn't perfect, but it's probably the best any system has had (the PSP started off worse, the DS and 3DS started off terrible, and even the consoles have had poor launches). Uncharted, Lumines, Rayman, and Blazblue are all great, a good chunk of the PSP library is available (you can technically load any digitally released PSP game if you own a PS3. For some reason not all of them are on the Vita store so you need to transfer them. Not sure what's up with that.) Plus Gravity Rush looks fantastic.

Just finished the SP of Uncharted 3 a few moments ago. This is one of the absolute WORST games I´ve played in the last 5 years. Absolutely horrible. The set-pieces are beautiful, the game looks nice and I like Nate and the gang but the gameplay? Incredibly bad and dated.
The strange thing is, I don´t remember UC2 being so bad, in my memory, it is a fun game...what the fuck happened between 2 and 3....?
Inaccurate and weak guns, enemies that take a whole clip to the chest before dying, Super-Enemies that just walk through a hail of your bullets like it´s nothing, spawning-mechanisms straight out of the early 90s placing enemies wherever the fuck it wants it seems...oh yeah and even an indestructible script-miniboss on the ship. Nice.
Plus, yes, we know Drake gets in sticky situations but the cadence of things blowing up or falling apart is so fucking high in 3 that I actually startet yelling at the TV to get the fuck on with it once I reached the ship.
Oh and what became of all the unlockable stuff like skins, weapons and things like that? I couldn´t find it anywhere...
