Cafe Du Mo-Holy Crap! That’s A Lot Of Powdered Sugar!

An order of Beignets from Cafe Du Monde! SUGAR!

Thanks to all of you who've been commenting on my last blog post with great suggestions for things to check out while we're here in New Orleans this week! Since a bunch of you brought up the Beignets from Cafe Du Monde, I decided to check 'em out. As you can see in the photo above, they're pretty insane. Why? Because it appears that the entire world's supply of powdered sugar rests on top of every order. With each order, you get 3 hot 'n tasty beignets that are absolutely covered in powdered sugar. I couldn't even finish it all because it was just so filling. But you guys were right, they're a lot like funnel cakes. Good stuff and thanks for the tip.

Blackened Chicken from The Gumbo Shop! Sssssspicy!

Per the recommendation of a local, we went out for dinner to an awesome little place called The Gumbo Shop. I love me some spicy chicken, and their blackened chicken was just as badass as I had hoped. I covered it in their homemade creole seasoning and pepper blend and cleaned that plate off in a heartbeat. Might have to stop by there again before I leave town. If nothing else, I'm gonna order some of their spices from their web site.

Anywho, I'm heading off for now, but I'm sure I'll have some photos to share with you guys when I get back. And don't worry, I'm still working on the huuuge Comic-Con photo gallery when I'm on a break at the hotel, so that's coming soon.

I'll be checking the blog randomly throughout the week, so keep those suggestions coming for places to see and food to eat! Talk to ya soon. Jambalaya!

p.s.: Sorry if this post made you guys extremely hungry. If you close your eyes and lick your screens, you can almost taste the Cajun flavors.

Nope.

All I tasted was the monitor.

"Creole seasoning and pepper blend" eh? "Tastes yummy!"

A few hours later in the hotel bathroom, "My intestines are hanging out!"

Normally I would be insanely jealous of you, but knowing that in approximately two months and one week, I'll be eating the same thing, I can stave it off for now *laughs* Glad you enjoyed both places, Rog!

And yes, the amount of powdered sugar they put on those things is insane. As my one friend described to me, after getting a "to go" order (in a bag.): "The cook...covered them in powdered sugar, shook some sugar into the bag, put them in the bag, shook MORE sugar on top of them and then gave them to me. I ate my three and thought there was another one still in the bag because there was so much sugar in the bottom."

Great, now I want Cajun food, and all I have in the house is Chinese and Italian.

That reminds me, I haven't had a funnel cake in forever, and the last ones I saw were pathetic little things that looked undercooked.

On an unrelated note, is it bad that I anticipate the Weeklies updates almost as much as I do the Comic-Con photo gallery?

As a local New Orleanian, I have a few recommendations for you. Go further down Decatur from the Gumbo Shop, away from the CBD and Jackson Square. There's an area called Lower Decatur where there is a cluster of awesome that includes Coop's (really great cheap food), Angeli's (Italian with Middle Eastern influence), Mojo's (it's a bar and they have really great food), Fiorella's (get their fried chicken, it's awesome), and a pop culture store called Fun Rockin' that I think you'll really like. That's all I can think of right now for ya, if you're going to be staying in the Quarter area.

Check out Mulatte's, Tujague's, Jacque Imo's, and Drago's if you get the chance, too.

Enjoy the local flavors. All I have here is crummy Zatarains boxed mixes.

Hmm. *makes note of Bonck's suggestions* Will keep that in mind for when I go down there. I might have seen Fun Rockin' on one of my earlier trips but I'm not sure. Sounds like my kind of place. And with the Gumbo shop as reference, that helps. Thanks!

Yeah, we actually walked by Fun Rock'n and I definitely want to go check it out. They're only open from noon 'til 5pm though, so kinda shitty hours. Looks like a really fun shop though, so I'll be sure to stop in!

Thanks for the continued suggestions guys! Keep 'em coming!

Insane amounts of sugar might make my innards explode in a very sweet way.

I'm a local (New Orleans born and raised). You're getting a lot of suggestions and there is a ton to do in New Orleans, but it's all fun. On that note, I'll make my recommendation brief as half the fun is discovery.

Check out Willie Mae's Scotch House on St. Ann St in Mid-City, it's rated the best Fried Chicken in the entire country.

Check out Ms Mae's 'The Club' on Magazine and Napolean for the strangest Dive bar on Earth. Cheapest Drinks anywhere (for good booze, too) and if you go later in the night you'll see everyone from bikers to frat boys to wanna-be thugs to sorority girls to old people, etc. all getting together over cheap booze. It's World Peace. lol

Go to Drago's (there's one in metairie and one in the Hilton in the Quarter) and get some Char-grilled Oysters...

If you hit Bourbon St, Razzoo has the cheapest 3-for-1 until 9pm (though most places will have a 3-for-1 until this point), then Bourbon St Blues Co. has a 3-for-1 upstairs until they close the upstair part (Usually around 2-3am on weekdays). After that there are places off Bourbon catering to service industry doing 2-for-1 specials, so ask the bartenders...

I was going to recommend a trip to Magic Masters but I guess it's gone now. There was a store at The Riverwalk and I bought the vanishing scarf trick there when I was a kid.

Thanks for the continued recommendations all! We've been checking 'em every day! Anywho, it's late and I gotta crash so I'll just give you guys a quick update:

We're heading out to the swamps tomorrow and I look forward to feeding a gator some marshmallows. Cajun marshmallows, naturally.

I grew up in New Orleans! I have something you've just got to try! I've never seen this outside of Louisianan, and it doesn't have a specific restaurant you will find it in.... just look around at the menus. It's called a French Fry Po' Boy. It's french bread sandwhich with fries in the middle, covered in gravy. It can kill you with calories, but you WILL die happy...

I recommend buying the pepper blend and hot sauce gift set from The Gumbo Shop. I pretty much use their cajun seasoning on all the chicken I make and it's DELIGHTFUL.

FYI: Don't believe anything in New Orleans with the word "Cajun" on it...that means it's just a poor imitation to hook tourists. People in NOLA don't know Cajun food; NOLA and the rest of Louisiana are like two separate countries, almost. A lot of these chefs making "gumbo" aren't even from Louisiana and are utterly clueless. I can't even find good boudin in this city, and I certainly won't eat it unless I know where it's from and who prepared it (many people don't even know how to cook it!). You have to go out to the rural areas of South Louisiana to find good Cajun food made by honest-to-goodness French-speaking Cajuns.
