The “PickleMan Begins” Beta Test Was An April Fool’s Day Gag? You Don’t Say!

OH HOW I LOVED WHEN YOU ATED MY HEAD, PICKLEMAN!

So yeah, for those of you who didn't get it, the "PickleMan Begins" Flash game beta test was a complete joke. I'm sure most of you realized this fact quickly, but it never ceases to amaze me how there's always a handful of people who think these gags are the real deal. It's all part of the fun though and I gotta thank Nick (Bomtoons) for staying up with me this weekend and working on my latest absurd April Fool's Day gag. Having done fun ones in the past like the I-Grounds prank, I always feel like I need to top myself (as with most anything I work on, even though that's an unrealistic expectation much of the time), but it's always a good time brainstorming ways to screw around with people or give 'em some extra laughs come April 1st each year.

The idea for this year's gag was simple: Get people excited about finally getting to try out the PickleMan game we've been hyping for a long time (see this trailer from a few years back) and then crushing their hopes with the disappointment that only the Atari 2600's "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" (aka: quite possibly the worst game ever created) could deliver. Granted, recreating the E.T. experience, meant that both myself and Nick had to endure hours of playing and working with that awful classic game, but these things are a labor of love my friends. Speaking of which, I hope you all found the lil' easter egg we added in there for when you hit the enter key during gameplay.

In addition the amusing reactions to the game in our own comments thread, we've had some great ones on Newgrounds where we uploaded the fake beta test game as well, so be sure to check 'em all out for some more laughs.

For the record, the PickleMan flash game is still going to get completed, but we're currently working on another huge game project that we're completely obsessed with completing first. Once that game is done, we've decided we're gonna finish the big PickleMan one. It'll all be well worth the wait though, mark my words. Anyway, I hope you all enjoyed our April Fool's Day gag along with all the other ones that took place on the web. April 1st is easily one of my favorite days of the year to be online. If nothing else, it's gotta be doing wonders for Rick Astley's career.

Real or not, it was the most brilliant work in the history of video games.

Weirdly, my copy of EGM arrived yesterday, and they also referenced that game (with a screenshot). Total double take; I thought for a minute you guys with in some April Fool's cahoots.

Hah... Well, well, as long as the final version is not something like "Ghostbusters" for NES... I'm just kidding folks, I know you can do a lot better than that :P

Regards!

Wait, that was just an APRIL FOOLS JOKE!?!?

I guess the joke was on me...Rog assured me it would be the most popular game on the interweb.

:(

Roggs, are you talking about Lego Halo? My school gets EGM a month early, and I thought it was real, too. Until I remembered that fact. Do you remember Mushroom Kingdom Hearts? That was a good one.

Ahhhh ET, the death toll of Atari. Can't help but wonder what on earth they were smokeing when they came up with THAT one.. Not to mention their making more games then Atari's. They say the company dug a hole out in the desert and burryed the excess... some day I shall find them.. What will I do with ten thousand old ET games you ask? well its simply a part in my master plan for world dominaton... first ET then carrot top.. then the world will be mine! *cough* uhh forget I just said that..

Heh, any hoo pickle man ated ET's head? Hmmm, wonder what it tasted like?

It took me about three minutes to where all I was doing was having ET charge at Pickleman to get his heat "ated"

I keep falling in the damn holes! How do you get out? Is there a walkthrough on line anywhere?

Best laugh of the day! I wasn't expecting the sudden change to an E.T. emulator AT ALL. The Easter egg was cool too. Very entertaining, though I'm sure that in the original game E.T. never got his head "ated" XD (though it probably woulda been a lot more fun if they had done it) This site never dissapoints. Great job!

To BakaGaijin: When you fall in a hole, hold Space; you should start flying/hovering/stretching your neck for no reason/whatever you wanna call it. Hold it until you get out. Simple, huh?

When I was little, I was abosolutely terrified of ET. No way in Hell I'd ever play the video game.

Nice April Fool's prank btw.

My prank was telling my mom I was pregnant.

i'm still scared of that little freak, i used to cheer when he was close to death, my older brother cuffed the back of my head and told me to shut up of course, but it was totally worth it!

The Original ET was a simple premise: obtain candy, find pieces of the Phone, assemble them, call for the transport, and find the LZ in the opening screen, and wait for pickup.

The stupid part was that the game was nearly impossible. You started with 9999 Health, which ticked down as you moved. By holding down the button, you engaged a speed run which would make you go really fast but burn tons of energy. If you fell in a hole, you lost energy from the fall and had to blow more energy getting yourself back up. You died at 0, but had a few extra lives due to Elliot giving you energy.

You could also collect Reese's Pieces. These could be eaten to recover energy, or given to Elliot, which gave you extra points. This is another game wherein you basically NEEDED the Manual to have an idea of what the fuck to do. I remember there was a Flower ET could heal by poking it with his extendo-neck as well, in one of the holes.

Speaking of Elliot, he was one of several NPC characters in the game. The other was a scientist who would bring ET to a lab, and the one that single-handedly rendered the entire game impossible without Save States, the FBI Agent - who stole all phone parts you had and all Reese's Pieces you had.

PROTIP: Pickleman's a modded FBI Agent Sprite.

By changing the settings, you could play on Mode 2 (no Scientist appears), or the only way the game was remotely beatable, Mode 3 (only Elliot appears).

ROG's version is actually better in just about every way, since you never run out of energy and thus it doesn't feel like the game itself is against you, holes aside.

i knew it had to do with april fools, but i enjoyed the game so i dont get how it was supposed to really fool me.

The best April Fools' jokes are ones that don't hurt people and wind up being epic in awesomeness. ET Vs. Pickleman qualifies.
