I've stated many times in the past that one of my favorite things to do at Target is scope out what items they have on closeout. On my most recent visit, I found some Ice Breakers PACS on the food aisle closeout shelf, which obviously means they're fantastic. For those of you who never saw 'em when they were still easy to find in stores, PACS were breath-freshening candies in little pouches that dissolved when you put them on your tongue. They came in Orange and Cool Mint flavors, and while I checked for cool mint, all they had at this Target was orange. I'm guessing the cool mint flavor was the better of the two, because it looks like they had a really hard time getting rid of these orange ones. I dare say I'm the first person to ever purchase the orange flavored ones, take a look:
Originally $1.99, then reduced to $1.68, then reduced to $1.38, then finally reduced to $0.48. I'm sure if I waited a little longer to buy 'em, they'd be giving Orange PACS free with any purchase... or just free for being nice enough to pay a visit to their store.
Upon opening up the plastic PACS case, you quickly realize why Hershey stopped producing these things. It's not necessarily because of the way they taste, it's because they look almost exactly like dime bags of cocaine. You can check out this news article which says police were worried that if a child found some street drugs, he/she wouldn't know the difference between it and the Ice Breakers candy. I'm not too sure how or why a kid would find some street drugs lying around ("I learned it by watching you!"), but PACS are officially out of production whether we like it or not. So let's see if this is a candy that really should be missed or not...
PACS do dissolve on your tongue fairly fast, but it's not exactly a great feeling, nor a particularly tasty one since the bland candy dissolves faster than the gooey packet remnants do. I equate the experience to pouring some Tang into a sandwich bag, putting it in your mouth and waiting for something magical to happen. But nothing magical does happen. You're just left wondering why the fuck you paid to put a bag of Tang in your mouth. Sure, it was reduced to .48 cents, but that's .48 cents too much. Let's just hope that the Xylitol sweetener in the ingredients doesn't turn out to have the laxative effect like some sites suggest. If it does, perhaps snorting this stuff would be a better alternative after all.
Long story short, the only PACS in this world you need to concern yourselves with are PAC-MAN and the rest of his family.
Survey: What are some of the best closeout deals you've ever found in a store? It doesn't matter if it's food, games, toys, or whatever... just as long as you thought it was a hell of a good deal that you couldn't possibly pass up.

Once found a box o' those "building blox" candy which was a blatant Lego ripoff, on sale at my local Target.

When Nintendo decided that everything they made should be wrapped in soft baby blue or pink silicone, they started packaging free classic controller gloves in boxes with 2000 Wii points for 20 bucks. It also costs 20 bucks to buy Wii points online with your credit card. Somehow, though, none of the glove/points combos sold at the local Wal-mart, and last week they were on clearance for 7.50 apiece. I ended up with about twenty thousand Wii points that I'm still not sure what I want to do with.

^ Gift every single person that graces this place a copy of Earthbound(can you use gift as a verb?). Assuming it comes out, EVER.
Jay-Tee (Guest) on 07/09/2008 4:40 am
Also, realizing I got off topic. I ended up with Chrono Trigger and Earthbound with manuals for about 25 dollars when a local blockbuster closed down oh so many years ago.
TheDoomThing on 07/09/2008 6:51 am
A frickin copy of Burnout for $20.
Sure, i may not have saved much,
but the car smahing fun is all it took.
Oh, and some "BiZZerks" hard candy with fizzy stuffs in the middle for 1 buck.

4 packs of Nerds, with a maze, connect the dots, AND word search on the box for like a dollar each.
I bought 4 >__>
Mystik Tomato on 07/09/2008 8:15 am
I got every Batman movie released to date for something like $35.
6 movies for $35! Awesome.
HellBeast on 07/09/2008 8:31 am
The best I have is when I bought Morrowind for xbox for like 10 bucks. I mean sure it froze every couple hours which made me start saving like I was obsessive compulsive but it was fun.

Bought the full-sized LEGO Millennium Falcon from Target back in late 2005 when they were clearing out the toys from Christmas. Cost $50. The original price was $100, and I had wanted it for some time anyway, so I went for it. Had a great time building it, and displayed it proudly.
Fast forward to early 2008. In an effort to rid myself of stuff that was just taking up space and that I no longer enjoyed, I listed the Falcon on eBay, with an opening bid of $49. The winning bid? $205, plus shipping.
Forget my 401k; I should've bought Target's entire stock of LEGO closeouts.

One week both Mentos (which are cheap anyways) and Diet Pepsi were on sale dirt cheap at my local supermarket. I'm pretty sure you know what happened after that.
ElkcimKire (Guest) on 07/09/2008 10:06 am
I got a whole box of those snickers charged bars. for like 25 cents each. caffinatied snickers rule.

The most recent deal that I have found cool enough to be worth mentioning is when I purchased two Xbox 360 games at a local store and got a third one for free. The games you ask?
1- Splinter Cell: Double Agent
2- Assassin's Creed
3- Devil May Cry 4
Another nice deal are the beers sold at a local night club. Where other places sell a friggin' bottle for the whopping amount of $25.00 M.X.N. (about $2.00 U.S.D.), the Café Negro (Black Café) will always remain a favorite as they sell a beer for half that insane cost.
kakumei on 07/09/2008 10:24 am
i bought all three extended "lord of the rings" box sets for $14.99 (minus a tiny amount because of my gamer card) thanks to a buy-one-get-two-free deal at my local gamestop a few years back. sure they're used, so they don't have that new dvd smell, but the discs are in great condition-- it's as if the previous owner(s) watched them once and then decided they didn't want them anymore.
RationalDementia on 07/09/2008 11:34 am
I was browsing through the usual football and wrestling titles on my local video store's used games table when I came across copies of Worms: Armageddon and Super Puzzle Fighter 2: Turbo (both for PSX) for $7.50 each. This is back before Puzzle Fighter had been re-released on fifty different platforms and was selling for big bucks on EBay, so it was an incredibly lucky find.
Also, if you've never played it, GameStop is selling used copies of Crimson Skies: High Road To Revenge for the XBox (one of the best games for the old black beast, BTW) for $5.00. You can download it off of XBox Marketplace for $15, or you can get the physical game for $%. Either way, it's a great deal.

When I was a kid, I remember my father buying a lot of Playmobil toys (there was 5 boxes, each a different set, lot's of stuff inside).
Price? The price escapes me (it was a long time ago) but I think it was just the regular price of one normal box set. I guess people didn't liked Playmobil back then.
Nowadays, I just bought a pair of PS2 controllers for my PC for just R$40,00 (about $24 or so). Those things were almost R$100,00 ($62) each some time ago. Lucky me.

Paid 15 bux for a $20 dollars worth of wii points. Stupid Zellers.
Aura Fox on 07/09/2008 11:48 am
A copy of A Clockwork Orange for seven bucks that was returned, as if someone bought it and got scared of it. Guess they werent up for a bit of the ultra violence?
KillerMcGee on 07/09/2008 12:09 pm
I don't know if this counts, but...
One time I went thru the self check-out at a supermarket, and when it gave me change the $5 bills were really new and stuck together, I went in with about $20 and left with something like $22 and my groceries.
Zaodai (Guest) on 07/09/2008 12:54 pm
This isn't exactly along the same lines of the others, but I used to be a Line Officer for a local 4-H Rifle club, and we go through a lot of .22 Caliber ammunition.
One day I was in Wal-Mart, picking up a brick worth of ammo (500 rounds), which normally costs something like $18 I think. The girl behind the counter rang it up, and it came out to an insanely lowball price. $2.89, if memory serves. They had set the computer so it was giving out the price of a single BOX of ammo (50 rounds) instead of a BRICK of ammo. I asked to make sure I heard her right, and then ended up buying a few extra bricks of it. I didn't want to be a total dick and buy up a whole years worth for the club, so I only grabbed a few bricks worth to last us awhile.
Needless to say, the kids in the club got to shoot a few more relays in the following months. ;)
Drunken_Lemur408 on 07/09/2008 2:12 pm
A few weeks ago my brother managed to get the entire Futurama series, thats four box sets, for the price of two, and Bender's Big Score at half price! Thanks Best Buy!
Joe (Guest) on 07/09/2008 2:24 pm
A new Best Buy opened up by my house and I decided to spend some money. I settled on The Godfather game and a Demetri Martin CD. When I got to the checkout, the cashier startled rambling on about how awesome the game was. He talked so much that he forgot to scan my CD. But luckily he put it on that thing that deactivates the security device.
Free CD. God bless the talkers.

Half price quality non-expired beef jerky... best beef jerky I ever tasted too.
JJ the Jetplane on 07/09/2008 3:49 pm
I have been buying these for a few months, cuz their pretty easy to find here in Battle Creek, MI. Cool Mint is definitely the better flavor of the two, but the Orange flavor isn't too shabby neither! :)
JJ the Jetplane on 07/09/2008 3:50 pm
PS. I happen to like both flavors if you hadn't noticed, but i never get to eat all of them myself... my friends always take them from me.

i bought marvel ultimate alliance and ridge racer 7 on the ps3 for 10 bucks at best buy back in december, they were having an EOL (thats end of life ) sale on old stuff, most items end up being 75-80 % off, i have a few friends that work there and they gave me the heads up.
SlyBattery on 07/09/2008 7:13 pm
When I was young a local gas station was giving out some double pack of "expired" airheads which I didn't and still don't understand but loved.
Another cool find for me was finding the Stand by Me
Soundtrack for 99 cents at Goodwill. Not so amazing unless you consider I was trying to find the soundtrack for months and no stores had it.
TheSquishy on 07/09/2008 7:54 pm
I'm not sure if this is necessarily a close out, but, I found one of those limitied edition Pikachu/Pichu GameBoy Colors at the local Goodwill for $.99. Couldn't resist buying.
TheRyno665 (Guest) on 07/09/2008 9:57 pm
The best Target clearance purchase I ever made was getting a copy of the PC gamed Armed & Dangerous for $7.
Ironically, that was about 5 years ago and I've never installed it.
Copper on 07/10/2008 12:07 am
Let's see...Once picked up the Tangerine Dream version of the "Legend" soundtrack used. Don't remember what I paid for it, but I know it's supposed to be hard to find (or at least used to be.)
Got a Rock Tumbler and a Cotton Candy maker for like, 10 bucks each. I used to work at a Media Play before they closed down and on top of the discounted prices on toys (if you were lucky, they'd hang around until they were like $1.88), we also got our 40% off employee discount, so clearance toys were dirt cheap. Which brings me to my other steal...Back when the game Scene-It was all the rage and couldn't be found anywhere (at least here in town) there was some glitch in the MP pricing computers that had *brand new* Scene-It games for $7.88. Needless to say, between the stock staff, those things never hit the floor. I bought one for myself, one for my mom's boss, and brought one home, which my dad then turned around and sold on eBay for somewhere around 50 bucks, I think.
I'm not counting the liquidation prices as "bargain deals" since those aren't true "clearance" finds, but my friend got a PSP for $12 that way (90% off, then our soon-to-be-former boss gave her her employee discount, too)
Best find I ever had, though, and I'm afraid to get authenticated, but it looks real enough to me is the Incredible Hulk #181 (Wolverine's first battle) that I found at a book sale for 10 cents. I had it sitting beside me on a stack of comics I was still looking at and a kid came up and goes "Are you getting that?" I looked up at him and went "Uh, yeah" and immediately moved it to my lap.
Autrach Sejanoz on 07/10/2008 12:15 am
The best deal I've ever found was Deus Ex for $10 at EB Games. Best $10 I've ever spent.

Went to Rasputin's music store on a normal day.I was looking through the used games when I found Fable for the original Xbox for a buck. Then later I found out I really paid 98 cents for it.Runs perfectly too...I'm waiting for it to rip the flesh off my face or something.
medevac on 07/10/2008 1:30 pm
The best closeout deals for cool toys is always your local going-belly-up Kaybee toystore. I got an 6 of Star Trek TNG figures (after digging through the thousands of "Q" figures) for .99 each.
...oh and I once found a bunch of Dungeons and Dragons figures back in the 80's for 2/1.00. I nabbed Warduke, Paladin, the elf, and even a full-sized many headed Tiamat the dragon for like $3.00!
SWEET

Best clearance items ever: Every year on November 1st, I do a mad dash through all the local Wal-Marts, K-Marts, Targets, etc. to buy up all the marked-down Halloween stuff. A few years ago I got probably eight or ten old-school rubber masks (much like the ones on Halloween 3, only they didn't cover your whole head) for a quarter each. They actually look pretty creepy, too. I keep them in the trunk of my car, 'just in case.' Awesome purchase #2: A Journey's Greatest Hits DVD for 7.88 at Wal Mart. This is nonstop entertainment, watched many a drunken night by myself and my college friends.
Not so much clearance as pure luck: I got the first season of The Office for free because the cashier at Wal Mart didn't scan it. I win!
K-N (Guest) on 07/10/2008 6:17 pm
Not quite the same thing, but with the whole "turn in your dvd/games/cds/whatever and get in-store credit" at Bullmoose, I once gave them like... twelve of my sister's old cds and a Mortal Kombat game and bought the Nightmare on Elm Street dvd collection.
The price of the dvds after using the in-store credit? $1.50. The original price was about $50 bucks and I'd never put any credit on the card before then. Best almost-two bucks I've ever spent (not quite sure if the cashier guy made a mistake and undercharged me, but it was still epic).

Back in 1998 they put all of the original Sailor Moon toys released in America on clearance at KBToys. I was blissfully happy.
Dungeonbrownies on 07/10/2008 9:29 pm
Honestly, the only reason I liked these things was BECAUSE they looked like dimebags of drugs. the same reason Im looking for the perfect lighter and why ppl used to make candy cigarettes.

I got a gorgeously illustrated book of Arthurian myths for $0.59. Brand new.
At a used book sale, I got a 1930's era atlas for $1.
Seriously cool books.

One time my mutual funds shares went down and it made me sad when my Roth IRA looked like it was losing money, but then I remembered to buy low and sell high. I left my IRA alone and just invested more money into it when the shares were at bargain price. I'm so glad I did because now my shares are in the growth stage (aside from the value stage when I was worried about "losing" money) and my Retirement age is going to be 35. Thank God for being smart with my money!

I remember that the guy who owns Harley Davidson now bought it when it was failing at $325k and now because of the baby boomers who bought the bikes up and made it what it is today the guy is filthy fucking rich. Man forget the W-2 it's a 1099 world. I can't wait to quit my job and blow my business up.

Since I work at Target, I get to find great deals all the time. I once got a flat screen LCD monitor for 75% off and just this week I got a bunch of DVDs for super low prices since we didn't actually stock them. For example, Knight Rider Season 1 for less than 5 bucks.
Duct Tape Ninja on 07/11/2008 10:09 pm
When Playstation was being taken over by the PS2, a local game store was selling new PS1 games for as low as a buck.
I bought about 8 game which I have already sold and forgotten when I finally realized why they were sold for a buck a piece.
FrankWestHasCoveredWars (Guest) on 07/12/2008 2:29 am
I got a DS Lite, a crapload of games, and a case for $5 at a church tag sale. No, that wasn't a typo. In hindsight, I kind of feel bad because I think I basically stole it from a forgetful kid. Oh well, I'll get mine in the end.
Also, it is needless to say that I'm going to the one this year.

like every video game ever from target. employees take stuff all the time, and the store doesn't even care.

I got a big handheld spotlight-style flashlight marked down to only $10 (originally $50) a while ago. One of those million-plus candlepower jobbies. It stopped working a month or two later, but it was fun while it lasted. I could stun the neighbour children with it from three backyards away.

I thought that the peach-flavored knockoff Twizzlers were a great deal when I found them in the Target clearance section for $0.74/packet. (Why 74 cents? Why not 75?) So I got like 4 packs and brought them home and bit into one and broke my tooth the first bite I took. Turns out they were stale and hard.
After the dentist visit, one pack ended up costing about $314.

some Swords game
Nights Journey of dreams
Wii Play
Excite Truck
think there might have been another one or two

Also, I was at Circuit City once and looked through their video game bargain bin and found Total Overdose on the PS2 for $2. I figured "Hey, even if the game sucks, I'm only out two bucks." Turns out even for a poor man's GTA, it's a pretty damn fun game. Also, Mexican stereotypes abound! You can use power-ups to turn into a luchadore or dual-wield fully automatic guitar-cases, Desperado-style.
