Crayola’s BOO-Licious Brownie Kit.

Are you hungry for some Halloweeny treats with an artistic flair? You're in luck, because Re is back to report on her experience with Crayola's new "Boo-Licious Brownie Kit". Take it away Re!

Who wants to eat some crayons?

Rog and I found this brownie kit at Target and I decided to give it a try since, as I said in my last post, I'm trying to be devilishly domestic this Halloween season. The kit seemed fun enough and I thought it looked like it would be pretty easy to do.

The first time I went to make the brownies I quickly realized I needed extra ingredients which are pointed out on the back of this box: egg, oil and water. The only one of those I had at my disposal was the water, so I ran out to the store to pick up the rest and ready to go.

The kit comes with the brownie mix, frosting, cute little pans, edible watercolors, brushes and instructions. So, time to read the instructions which are broken down into Adult parts and Kid parts. I shall be playing both for the purposes of this exercise.

Ok, so... step number 1! Preheat, wipe, grease, butter...

Butter? The box didn't say I needed butter! And then I keep reading and some craziness about dusting the pan with FLOUR comes up. I don't have flour! Well I do have butter. I may not be a chef, but I'm not a caveman either. But I have to say "screw it" to the flour dusting because I am not going back out for that. Living on the edge is the only way to live, especially this close to Halloween.

I mix up the ingredients – pretty easy. The directions say to "pour" the batter into the little pans. Well, the batter isn't really pourable so I oafishly scoop the batter instead. Not so elegant but works fine. Then it says to bake for 12-15 mins or until a toothpick comes out clean when you poke the brownie with one. It turned out to be closer to a cooking time of more like 30 mins or longer. But once they were finally done baking I left them cool off and then put on the frosting. You let them sit for at least a half-hour according to the directions, but I let it sit overnight. And here you have your blank canvases:

It was definitely awkward to paint with. Maybe I think that way because I'm actually a painter, so I'm sure I have higher standards than people who aren't artists about it. The brushes suck it big time, but if you don't get hung up on precision it's fun.

Anyway, here are the final masterpieces:

Bucktoothed Frankenpire

Ghost with a Black Eye

Pac-Man eating a Candy Corn

Pickleman Pumpkin

A Flesh Wound

A Zombie.
(Technique tip – crack the hardened frosting a little here and
there to get a cool crackle texture on the zombie's face.)

And lastly, I'm sure you're all dying to know "How did they taste!?"

Answer: Better than I expected. Not too shabby.

Conclusion: This kit is a fun time-killer. Give it a try if you can find it and check out what some other people have done with the kit here.

I'd love to see one of Re's paintings reprinted on a brownie. I'd try really hard not to eat it.

Nice Job, Re! I'm surprised the paint colors came out so bright, from the looks of the kit, I was expecting washed-out pastels. I especially like the Frankenpire but wonder if he has trouble fitting in.

yeah the designs came out really great, especially the zombie one. But not dusting the pan with flour? Madam, I admire your bravery.(especially since I follow all cooking instructions exactly because I'm too afraid something will go wrong)

You are a hardcore rebel with wreckless disregard for rules. Not dusting the pan? Doing BOTH the kid and adult parts? Damn. Don't run into Re in a back alley.

Also, my favorite is either the flesh wound or Pickleman.

Kudos to the chef. Very nice work Re. I think Pac-Man gets my vote.

I'm surprised that you went for the "Bucktoothed Frankenpire" over "Count Pop". Still, many of these creations are awesome and definitely shows that you are creative. I would probably be lost for ideas outside of a smiley-face brownie.

Wow that Zombie is excellent!

Here's a baking tip for all you would be brownie bakers: I'm amazed that Re's brownies didn't come out really overcooked and dry because the 15-20 minute baking time is correct, but the toothpick will not come out clean at that point! Brownies, much like cookies, have such a high sugar content that when the brownies are done, the sugar is melted and a toothpick will not come out clean. Once the brownies are cool they will be perfect: fudgy and gooey but definately cooked and brownielike. If you bake them too much you run the risk of having dry brownies.

Loved that zombie. I'm also glad to see a kid's cooking kit that actually gave you enough ingredients to use, unlike easy bake ovens and other stuff I've experienced in the past.

Impressive painting skills, Re. They look pretty detailed and clear for being painted on brownie icing.

BTW I just want to point out that brownie instructions always forget to mention a certain other ingredient that always makes brownies better.

(Sorry, someone had to make the required "stoner-brownie" joke).

Nice effort, Re. I have to compliment you for creating such an amazing zombie. It is about time you start uploading articles on a more regular basis, eh? We, Graphical Designers, can learn a lot from you.

On a side-note, this article reminds me of that one from long ago about the McDonald's McFlurry Maker Machine, as those food-making toys always have easy instructions on their boxes but real thing is always more complicated. I remember that situation in which both -RoG- and Proto had to go though hell in order to create some tasty treat that hardly resembled a true McFlurry. Hope you didn't have such a hard time.

If you can paint that good w/foodcolor and icing, I would love to see your actual paintings!

I am always trying these type of food "projects" and they may taste great but always look as if a 2 yr old did them!

And yes and something "special" always make browines better. :-)

In my grocery store, they have these cool food coloring brush-pen things. They work really well! I was able to draw a pirate treasure map on the top of my friend's birthday cake with them. Pretty good detailing capability, once you get used to how they work.

And that zombie brownie is the most awesome Halloween thing I've seen this year. The flesh wound is a close second!

MissEvie: You can actually look at some of Re's work at her website, which is http://www.strangepuppets.com.

I have to say that her work is awesome and it comes as no surprise for me as how she can can come with such an amazing array of edible goodies. Way to go Re!

RE, why not get real fancy and use some of that spray on food coloring from the last piece! (i LOVE the Pac-Man)

Re's paintings kick ass, and so do these brownies! I love the zombie and the Pac-Man, and the ghost with a black eye would make an awesome corporate logo or symbol or something.

I would like to hang that zombie brownie on my bathroom wall. It matches our color scheme and would look fantastic next to our Night Of The Living Dead Air Freshener.

Here's hoping our local Target is as well stocked with brownie kits as yours :)
