Trick ‘R Treat Finally Comes To DVD!

Trick 'r Treat and Creepshow all in one night? Egad!

Unless you're a horror fan who's been living under a rock for the past two years, you've undoubtedly heard the cries of many fans (myself included) who were pissed off that Trick 'r Treat was never given a proper theatrical release. It was originally due to come out in theaters back in October 2007 (which would have been a perfect Halloween release instead of yet another pointless Saw film), but studio execs made the boneheaded decision to instead release it directly to DVD two years later. Keep in mind during this two year period there were plenty of crappy horror movies such as the abysmal 2008 remake of Prom Night which were given worldwide theatrical releases.

I'm one of the lucky ones who actually got to see an advance theatrical screening of the film at the San Diego Comic-Con and it's also currently playing here in Los Angeles at the New Beverly Cinema alongside "Creepshow". Between that and their recent double feature of John Carpenter's "The Thing" and "Prince of Darkness", the New Bev is making me wish they had a cots so I could just stay there all month. Hopefully some other independent theaters near you will be showing it this month, but if not, the film comes out on DVD today so you can at least see it.

Trick 'r Treat is finally on DVD. Watch it ASAP or Sam is gonna have to pay you a visit.

Yes indeed, after two long years, the general public can finally see Trick 'r Treat which has received nothing but the highest accolades from horror fans everywhere. Just check out the rating on IMDB... it's not often you see a horror film with ratings that high these days. If you ask me, it deserves a higher rating than that.

Trick 'r Treat is a total throwback to the anthology horror films of yesteryear... if you're a fan of films such as Creepshow, Tales From The Darkside, and Cat's Eye, you're going to feel right at home in the capable hands of writer/directory Michael Dougherty. Upon seeing the trailer, I already knew it was going to be fantastic, but after actually seeing the film, I was absolutely stunned that a work like this would be shelved for two years and then released on DVD like a second-rate film.

Let's consider a few things here. First off, it has a fantastic cast: Anna Paquin, Dylan Baker, Brian Cox and even Brett Kelly (the kid from Bad Santa). We're not talking about a weak cast here folks... this could've been one of those horror films where all they do is hire random teens with "hawt bods" to kill off, but they actually hired some quality actors to drive each of the stories. Which brings me to the next item on my list.

Trick 'r Treat consists of five tales of horror which are all connected by Sam, a seemingly innocent little kid who wears a burlap sack on his head. He's a Halloween guardian of sorts, ensuring that the time-honored traditions remain intact. You're gonna love Sam just as you're going to love the stories which cover all of the Halloween bases and the fantastic cinematography which truly does the Halloween season justice like few other films have.

I also can't recommend "Trick 'r Treat: Tales of Mayhem, Mystery, and Mischief" enough. I got this book a long time ago, primarily because I simply couldn't wait for the movie to come out (yeah, I have the Trick 'r Treat "Sam" action figure too), and because everything I had seen of it looked fantastic. Well it is. As you look through the art in the book and see all the planning that went into this movie, it becomes apparent very quickly that they put a lot of love into the project.

But here, just in case you've yet to see the trailer, allow me to share it with you:

If that doesn't convince you that Trick 'r Treat is one modern horror film that you absolutely must see this month, then I'm afraid there's nothing more I can do for you. Perhaps Sam can pay you a visit and teach you a little something about Halloween and horror movies instead.

Holy Hallowe'en!

That looks friggin' JAWESOME! How did I not hear about this movie? And the sack-headed kid, Sam was it?, looks SUPER JAWESOME!

Kids always creep me out. Especially toddlers. Mainly because they could go all homocidal and who would ever suspect them? I think it stems from a deeply rooted terror I god from seeing Gage in Pet Cemetary.

But yeah, I'm definately looking this one up, right now! Thanks for the heads-up, -RoG-!

Oh, in retrospect, I think I may know why I missed this one on the radar. Back in '07, I was internetless for about 8 months. :(

Oh, and that poster is LEVEL 4 SUPER MEGA JAWESOME! It will be mine, oh yes.... it will be mine.

By the Gods i've been waiting for this movie for over a year! Warner Bros. really dropped the ball not releasing this theatrically last year for Halloween. My cable company added it at 1 am last night so I stayed up watching it. This is by far THE definitive movie to watch for Halloween other than a certain Shatner masked stalker(yes I mean the original). Glad you got to see it on a big screen Rog. Also thats a funny coinkidink that you saw it with Creepshow, cause yesterday at K-mart I got Creepshow 2 for 5 bucks! I plan on watching both of them today!

Probably due to the fact that two years ago I was still in high school and did not regularly go to IMDB, I have not heard of this movie until now. But I am no failure as a horror fan, because I vow to see this movie!

RoG, your so lucky to have cool theaters like the Beverly Cinema near you; none of the theaters I know would even consider having a double feature, let alone showing a direct-to-DVD film! And the trailer for this movie looks so fantastic! No, scratch that... This trailer is made of AWESOME SAUCE! I'm going to go look for this movie right now!

I found out there's an art show in LA tonight and right next door there's supposed to be a Trick 'r Treat DVD release party. I'm gonna try to check it out and I'll be sure to take some photos of it if there's anything interesting for you guys to see!

Just watch it. In three words: worth the wait.

Man, SF needs to start getting more events like that. Castro and Clay can't do everything at once.

Take lots of pics RoG!

Funny how you can tell the quality of a film right from the trailer. It's a horror film with (gasp!) actors! The filming involves (double gasp!) actual professional camera wipes zooms and pans and not some stupid "shakey cam" crap! There appears to be a (triple gasp!) actual plot that actually involves halloween! And (quad gasp!) there is an actual carpenter-esque score!

I'll be picking this one up. It might not be the best horror film in the world but it is obviously better than the crap that's been released in the past five years or so.

Oh btw, I mentioned in a previous post that there aren't enough horror films being released in blu-ray format and thankfully there are plenty of newly re-mastered classics on sale at amazon all this month. Some for as little as 9 bucks! Unfortunately no phantasm though.

Awesome movie! It really captures the Halloween spirit both visually and emotionally - where so many other movies fail. In fact, I think only the original Halloween trumps Trick 'R Treat in this regard. Some of the cinematography in this film is breath-taking. Several scenes I simply paused just to take it all in.
Just check out a field adorned with multiple scarecrows and countless jack o'lanterns to see where I'm coming from. And to think it was only on the screen for several seconds...
It's almost sensory overload. Gorgeous.

I love this movie. It will become a Halloween tradition in my house, just as I guessed it would two years ago.

I was unaware of this one (Gosh, it's comfortable under that rock!), but immediately put it on my Netflix queue. To my surprise (the status was "Very Long Wait"), it will arrive tomorrow. Yay!

Can't believe this never got a theatrical release. It looks really good.

I rented this one recently and loved every second!
