Fruit Brute And Fruity Yummy Mummy Are Back! Plus, All Five Monster Cereals Are Getting Retro Packaging!

My friends, let it be known that 2013 will be forever remembered as the Year of the Monster Cereals. Why? Because, for the first time in our breakfast history, all five original Monster Cereal varieties - Boo Berry, Frankenberry, Count Chocula, Fruit Brute, and Fruity Yummy Mummy - will be available together on store shelves during the upcoming Halloween season. No, you didn't read that wrong... Fruit Brute and Fruity Yummy Mummy are actually coming back! Check out what General Mills just emailed me:

The Return of Fruit Brute and The Return of Fruity Yummy Mummy Monster Cereals! Coming Halloween 2013!

I've been asking General Mills to do this for ages, and I know plenty of big monster cereal fans out there have done the same with online petitions and more, so I gotta hand it to them for finally delivering the goods this year. As you all know, Boo Berry has always been the nearest and dearest breakfast icon to my heart, and I fought for years just to ensure he remained in production, but there's simply no denying that Fruit Brute and Fruity Yummy Mummy were the most overlooked monster cereal varieties. I love that the new boxes for these two are even being treated like classic horror movie posters by labeling them "The Return of Fruit Brute" and "The Return of Fruity Yummy Mummy". Of the two, I gotta go with Fruity Yummy Mummy as my favorite design, because you can go wrong with exaggerated eyebrows made from gauze strips. I do take a slight issue with them spelling his name as "Frute Brute" instead of the original "Fruit Brute" on the new box, but I'm sure that's just them having fun with the release, and don't let it worry you for even a second. Why? This is why:

Retro Monster Cereal Boxes Available Exclusively at Target During the 2013 Halloween Season!

Holy crapballs! General Mills is actually releasing special retro packaging for all five monster cereals! They've worked out a special promotion where you'll be able to get the original 70s & 80s retro monster cereal box designs exclusively at Target stores this Halloween season. AMAZING!!! If you weren't already super-excited for Halloween this year, you have absolutely NO excuse not to be now. General Mills is doing an incredible thing for all the fans this year and I couldn't be happier about it. Wanna know what else is really great about this? Aside from the fantastic collectible packaging, now an entire generation that never had a chance to try the original old fruit-flavored monster cereals before they were cancelled will finally have a chance to see what they were like.

Also, we'll all have an opportunity to properly reenact that scene from Pulp Fiction where Eric Stoltz is seen eating Fruit Brute. You hear me, cosplayers? I better see at least one Fruit Brute / Pulp Fiction costume at a convention sometime in the next year.

Yes, Fruit Brute appeared in Pulp Fiction.

Some cereal boxes are already on their way to my door. Once I get my hands on them, I'll be sure to post more photos and conduct a proper taste test during I-Mockery's upcoming annual "Two Months of Halloween" celebration, but I just had to share these pics that General Mills sent to me right away, because this is easily some of the biggest Halloween news you'll see all season. We have confirmation, my friends... EVERY SINGLE MONSTER CEREAL IS COMING BACK FOR HALLOWEEN 2013 AND YOU CAN GET THEIR ORIGINAL RETRO BOX PACKAGING. All hail the Great Pumpkin, for he has truly bestowed the greatest treats upon us this Halloween!

First thing I'm doing when I find all five is making a bowl of cereal using every flavor.

Nice! Always partial to Franken Berry, myself with the good Count in a close second.

Hey Rog, did you ever get yourself one of the wonderful NES Jason figures? You havent said one way or the other.

Always wanted to try these. heck, the only one of these we get where I live is count Chocula ( and even that disappeared a few years ago. And now that Canada finally has Target stores I'm hoping to pick up a (Cereal) Box Set!

BatmanJohnson - Good call. I wanna see photos when you do that!

Will Edwards - You may like Fruit Brute and/or Fruity Yummy Mummy even more than Franken Berry... many people did back in the day.

blood_panther - Yeah, that's why I'm excited. I had these cereals when I was a kid, but most people I know never got to try them, so it's gonna be cool to see what everybody thinks about them. Lemme know if and when you find all the boxes!

ForgottenInvader - Indeed!

i found out about this dionsuar yesterday to bad i don't have a target near by those retro boxes look bad ass also i was one of the people who never had fruit bruit or yummy mummy as a kid

For what it's worth, the cereals aren't coming back unchanged. You can see it up in the box art above. Fruit Brute WAS a fruit mix with lime marshmallows, and Yummy Mummy WAS the same, but with vanilla marshmallows. Now Frute Brute is cherry-flavored and Yummy Mummy is orange-creme-flavored, and both have "spooky fun" marshmallows, whatever that means. Just a heads up that things have been tampered with before anyone gets caught by surprise.

I just hope the retro boxes really look like the ones pictures. Unlike past retro boxes that had almost half the box taken up by a splash ad letting you know it was a retro box.

User avatar

WhiteRoseBrian on 08/20/2013 1:48 pm

I just might go ahead and sample all those cereals this autumn.

The flavor profile has changed since the original release of pretty much every cereal with the Government regulated changes in food nutritional content. Also the laws have changed so that you can't Use the word "Fruit" unless you actually have "Fruit" in yer product. Hence the "FRUTE" Brute (as well as "FROOT" Loops)...still it's worth the price of admission for the nostalgia this will trigger just being on the pantry shelf.

lukus (Guest) on 08/20/2013 3:14 pm

Now, if they could only make them taste like they used to. Texture-wise, they used to be much denser, like Lucky Charms. They're so puffed up now they really aren't the same.

Guest

ColdFusion (Guest) on 08/20/2013 3:58 pm

it's a Halloween miracle!!

Guest

jack (Guest) on 08/20/2013 4:36 pm

Wow, they are really cutting back on the amount of cereal you get these days. The boxes in the first picture say they are 0.0 oz and have 0 calories too.

User avatar

ChrisGlass on 08/20/2013 5:36 pm

I think the best part, even aside from the retro art, is how the new boxes say "The Return Of".

User avatar

-RoG- on 08/20/2013 7:30 pm

Captain Cornelius Cartoon - Ah ha! So that explains why they renamed him. Okay, so it was simply required by law rather than them changing his name. Odd that they can get away with calling the Yummy Mummy "Fruity" instead of "Frooty" though, isn't it?

TheGrumpus & Lukus - Well, here's the good news, a General Mills rep said, "We chose the current flavors of Fruity Yummy Mummy and Frute Brute to be as close as possible to the original flavors while taking into consideration consumers' preferences. Consumers can get a taste for what these cereals were like when they were originally on shelves."

Pretty exciting just to see the return of these long lost characters!

We got Boo Berry and Franken Berry in at my work tonight and I got excited. I didn't see Yummy Mummy or Frute Brute though but I may have missed them.

Guest

DingDonger (Guest) on 08/21/2013 9:24 pm

This is kind out of nowhere, especially considering how I was talking about these two cereals a day or two before this article was posted. Guess I'll have to check these out.

Guest

sean (Guest) on 08/21/2013 11:08 pm

If they would put a cheap-ass red plastic toy in these things.... it'd be AWESOME. I'd pay $.50 more for a package that contained a doodad that cost them a nickel.

Guest

O (Guest) on 08/22/2013 5:22 pm

I plan to get the retro boxes General Mills should make these cereals avabile year round I used to ask supermarket managers to try to get Booberry in all the time when they was carrying Count Choculs yearround Booberry is the AWESOME One

Guest

O (Guest) on 08/22/2013 5:29 pm

The retro boxes should be at all supermarkets not just at Target.

Guest

ColdFusion (Guest) on 08/22/2013 7:04 pm

You can get away with 'fruity' or 'chocolatey' without any actual fruit or chocolate.

Dear God. I was just thinking about this very cereal combination. And ... wha-BAM!!! This hits me like a bolt from the blue.

This means something. I need to play the lottery. Now. :o

Where is your Comic-Con review?!?

User avatar

WhiteRoseBrian on 08/24/2013 1:25 pm

I was wondering about that myself, Stacey. He's probably busy on top of taking time to sort out the photographs and build the pages.

User avatar

Stinger66 on 08/24/2013 7:07 pm

Anybody see these yet? I have yet to find any!!!

User avatar

shimwood on 08/25/2013 7:34 am

Is it just me or did the good 'ol i-mockery imgtext make a comeback as well!?

Regarding the cereal: I can't wait to try the 2 "new" flavors since they weren't around when I was younger (at least not that I know of). Hopefully I can snag a house before the end of the Halloween season (why does it have to end!!?!?!) so I can stuff my cabinets with Boo Berry boxes!

OMG...It Really coming back? Holy S**t. They need to make it available in "EVERY" supermarket so it is easy for fanatics like myself to get 100 boxes. I can't wait. Any release dates??????

Guest

Cliff (Guest) on 08/27/2013 10:45 pm

I found a box of Yummy Mummy at Walgreens. I just so happened to be there when their shipment arrived. Here's my review. They only had 4 monsters. No Frute Brute, yet. Hopefully they'll be more available soon!

Guest

Aaron (Guest) on 08/27/2013 10:50 pm

It's irked me a tad the last few years calling Boo Berry "Berry Flavored Cereal". Maybe they did that to appeal to fans of general berries not just of the blue variety, but c'mon the name of the cereal itself is a pun of blueberry. PS- Still looking around for the new guys, nothin yet...also check product locator link off this site blog.generalmills.com/2013/08/frute-brute-yummy-mummy

Might save you gas!

Guest

ColdFusion (Guest) on 08/29/2013 3:29 pm

I hope general mills' product locator is wrong because it says no monster cereals for me.. and better product selection is the entire reason i moved to Seattle.

Guest

Aaron (Guest) on 08/30/2013 5:56 am

None here yet also..but they will come. My Wal-Mart (where I work in foods) gets them sometimes (my boss told me about these 2 returning a month before the news)..also Wegmans and Target also. Early September is when nationwide distribution will happen, a few select places got them in early (somewhere).

Guest

DingDonger (Guest) on 08/30/2013 9:19 am

Yeah, the Product Locator is wrong. I was able to pick up all of the monster cereals except Fruit Bruit at a local Wal-Greens but it said there weren't any stores selling Monster Cereals yet.
So just ignore it and try a Walgreens, from my experience and what I've seen they'll usually sell it to you earlier than other stores would.

User avatar

JohnnyQuest on 08/30/2013 1:17 pm

This is great! I'm going to get all five, if I can sneak that much cereal past my wife...

Plus, Two Months of Halloween starts this weekend! YES!!

Guest

Aaron (Guest) on 08/30/2013 5:23 pm

Didn't find any at walgreens...then again i dont think this one ever gets 'em. I still have 4 places monitored.

Guest

Bob Suruncle (Guest) on 08/30/2013 10:42 pm

The FIRST thing I suspect anyone (i.e., eBay seller/scalper) will do when they get to their local Target, is to grab EVERY box (retro design) off the shelf. and then speed home to list them all on eBay @ $200 a box or $500 for a set. but only AFTER the cereal date has expired so that no one will be able to eat any. plus, the boxes will be crushed (purposely before shipping).

User avatar

bountyhunterseven on 09/04/2013 1:10 am

the commissary on Ft Bliss here has had them for about 2 weeks, and i can attest they are just as good as i remember them.

User avatar

sewnupsmile on 09/05/2013 2:18 pm

Amazing!!! What an awesome way to kick off the Halloween season...I can't believe the old Monster cereal crew is back together!!!

User avatar

Ex Leper on 09/05/2013 9:31 pm

A virtual friend of mine whom I frequently do trades with, is hooking me up with 2 sets of the 5 original boxes! One set to display and another so that I will finally be able to taste them for the very FIRST time!

User avatar

-RoG- on 09/05/2013 11:20 pm

Nice! Where did he find them? I've been looking everywhere, as have many other people, but I've yet to see the boxes in any stores. Also, can't believe you haven't tried them before (well not Fruit Brute or Fruity Yummy Mummy), but the others have been out for ages and aren't too hard to find during Halloween season.

User avatar

Ex Leper on 09/05/2013 11:46 pm

I was pretty repressed in that department as a child, he said

"My Target, in Dothan, AL, is currently in stock of the classic General Mills boxes however, their halloween items are not put out yet. When they do, I am positive my location will have the 5 flavors in their classic boxes. Every year they have had the cereal on hand during Halloween season. I will be buying them as soon as they arrive."

He's hooking me up with 2 boxes of all 5 different ones. One set to eat and one to display, so I'll be making up for it big time. I just have to pay him 15 to ship it.

User avatar

-RoG- on 09/05/2013 11:56 pm

$15 is a small shipping price to pay for a mouthful of Halloween cereal memories from yesteryear. Totally worth it. Enjoy 'em!

You have a very nice blog, but I must know something. How do you get away with using copyrighted stuff, its against the law??

User avatar

-RoG- on 09/07/2013 2:18 pm

Haha, no it's not against the law to promote anything in a blog. It all falls under Fair Use.

Guest

Aaron (Guest) on 09/08/2013 5:28 pm

Of the 2 places that has them here, they have all except Frute Brute. Really maddening. Target has them in back but aren't stocking them til 22nd or 29th (2 dates ive heard...also heard it was up to manager).Starting to see the retro boxes on ebay,so i guess some Targets are breaking that rule. My Wally has yet to get them in, but i check every morning i work in the back room. Needs me some Fruitie in the Brutie!

User avatar

Guest

My awesome girlfriend knows a Target manager and i scored 2 of each...before couldn't even scan them so they're on their way to shelves soon methinks. Another place around here got all 5 finally too..everyone keep ur eyes peeled!

Guest

grrr (Guest) on 10/05/2013 5:58 pm

The Wal-Mart near us has the cereal and we tried it. I can tell you, it is nothing like it was when I was a kid. They use way too much corn syrup glaze, and there is no real sugar or oat in it anymore, it's all corn ingredients, corn syrup, whole grain corn, corn meal, corn starch... It's kind of disgusting if you ask me, a lot more glaze sugery. Gross! And not so good for anyone!

Oh well, I thought it was cool to see it out again anyway, I just wish it really was the same as it used to be.

Guest

Cereal nut (Guest) on 10/06/2013 9:38 am

Well, as grrr mentioned... all the crap they use in todays foods is present in these and quite a disappointment to say the least. I see no reason why the company couldn't have used the original recipes instead of the chemicalized versions. I give these a 0 out of 10 rating for pure crap and a waste of my hard earned dollars. Boo to you General Mills!
