Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie

On Monday, John (Dr. Boogie) and I got to attend an advance private screening of the new "Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters". We were pretty excited to see the flick because we're both fans of the show - plus the screening room had some extremely nice seats that all movie theaters should be required to have these days considering how much tickets cost. For me, anything involving Carl Brutananadilewski and his daily struggles to stay alive during his neighbors' latest botched experiments is always a source of insta-chuckles. That man alone is what got me into the show and kept me hooked on it. Without spoiling anything for those of you who plan on seeing the movie, lemme give you a brief synopsis of it. It's basically an origin story that goes out of its way to NOT really tell you much at all about the origins of Frylock, Master Shake and Meatwad. Unfortunately, the movie itself was a let-down. The humor just fell flat all too often and it felt like they were desperately trying to stretch it out for the full 90 minutes. John and I were both in agreement that the show works much better in the 15-minute format we've all seen on Adult Swim. They're simply able to tell a whole story and get straight to the funny stuff, and there's no time for the jokes to get old that way. That's not to say the movie is completely devoid of laughs, I'm just saying most ATHF fans will probably feel like it was too long for its own good.

The good news is that many of your favorite side-characters from past episodes are in the movie including MC Pee Pants, the Mooninites, Cybernetic Ghost of Christmas Past from the Future, and more. I gotta say though, I was hoping to see Happy Time Harry in there, but he never showed up. Guess he was busy with his "action bills" or something.

The most surprising thing, however, is the intro before the movie. I won't spoil it for you, but it's a spoof on those old-fashioned cartoons that would play before movies telling you to grab a refreshment and not to talk during the show. Honestly, it was one of the most hilarious things I've seen in quite a while and everybody who was in the screening room was dying with laughter. So yeah, I guess it says a lot about the movie when the intro (that's not even technically a part of the movie) is the funniest thing about it.

One thing's for sure though: while I didn't care that much for the movie, I definitely need to get my hands on the poster for it.

Best. Poster. EVER.
There's no denying that this is one of the greatest posters ever made.

Shweet. I'm going to see that this Friday. So, how 'R' was it?

Honestly, the only difference I noticed was the language. Not quite sure what to think of seeing innocent little Meetwad saying "fuck".

Okay, whose favorite side character is MC Pee Pants? Even the creators wound up hating him by the time they got to his 3rd incarnation.

I hope we pick that up at work.

This seems pretty typical. Most TV show's I enjoy start falling flat on the big screen once the writers realize they need an actual plot and story that lasts 90 minutes.

Yeah that poster is the Balls, its kinda like the National Lampoons Family Vacation box cover meets a Molly Hatchet/Ronny James Dio album cover. In any case, I'm really looking forward to seeing this movie.

hah. yea I was kinda thinking it would be a bit flat at points. similar to an Ali G movie, or even Borat for that (granted both of those movies were funny, it's just that the skits from the show were way better). needless to say though, I will be seeing this movie. pretty sure I already know the end too unfortunately. I was trying to figure out what the poster reminded me of. I agree with the NL Vacation mixup, but you are unfortunately mistaken as to where they ripped their cover art from... Army of Darkness movie poster

there ya go. now come on, educate yourself on classic film.

Its not even showing in this state. And I totally knew that it was going to start with a grab a refreshment parody. Thats just fucking obvious.

Ha! Carl is my fav too! And i figured the movie would be too long for its own good. I figure the same will happen to the Simpsons movie.

Hey Tim,
I appreciate you're condescending post, but...
A. I've seen Army Of Darkness countless times
B. Who is to say that they ripped the cover from that movie? Ton's of movie;s use that over stylized kind of stuff for their posters.

The only episode I've seen of ATHF that I enjoyed was Hand Banana. Oddly, friends who are fans of the show disliked that episode.

Is the movie's humour more like Hand Banana or the usual stuff?

The poster is no rip-off. It was created by Boris Vallejo, who has done MANY pieces just like that in the past - including the "Vacation" movie posters.

No Happy Time Harry? Well I am not going then. I could take a full 30 minutes of him.

This movie was awesome! I was lucky enough to see the world premier in San Diego and I loved it. I'm a huge fan of the show and can't wait to see it again.
The begining part had the whole audience rolling with laughter.

My girlfriend Rebecca and I got to see the black curtain screening of the ATHFCMFFT movie back in March and I know it may disappoint on a few levels but we really laughed the whole time. I agree about the intro it got a great response; but the movie worked way better in 90 minute format than I expected.

Reminds me of the Hildebrandt Star Wars poster.

Meatwad's got a chainsaw in the poster, so I think there must've been some Army of Darkness inspiration.

gdgyia (Guest) on 04/11/2007 7:09 pm

Army of Darkness was the first movie to ever use a chainsaw.
Bruce Campbell also invented the chainsaw in 1971.

My cousin works at a movie theater and she saw fit to give me that very poster a couple weeks ago. I find it creepy.

I was worried about this movie because I don't have a great attention span--I actually found myself feeling like Billy & Mandy's Big Boogie Adventure was a bit too long. Oh well, if I see ATHF:MFfT then I'm not too worried about the guest stars because I'm all about the Frylock. Well, him and that monster from The Shaving who offered him "juice".

I'm actually skipping school on friday to see this movie. Regardless of how dissappointing it is, if it has the Cybernetic Ghost of Christmas Past from the Future, you can be assured I'll see it

Let's be honest, how many 15-30 minute TV shows made good movies? I can't think of any.

I'm just going to stick with ATHF on TV.
Shake rules.

I wish that ATHF aired in the UK... I have to watch it on the internets to sees it... I guess I'll have to wait until I can illegally see the movie...
Also, all this stuff with how the poster looks like it's from Army of Darkness and also how Meatwad has got a chainsaw... Any of you remember that Bruce Campbell is a voice actor in the Goddamn movie!? I doubt it is a coincidence!
Also Mr. Campbell is one of the best actors.

just got back from the aqua teen movie and i thaught it was generally pretty good, The beginnig part was absolutely hilarious i nearly fell out of my chair laughing. (as well as the rest of the people in the theatre) It stayed funny until about the middle when it got a little stale then picked back up again towards the end. I think that carl could of had a lil more lines than he did but thats just my opinion. I recommended it. I give it 8 nine-layered bean burritos out of ten.

JohnBoy (Guest) on 04/16/2007 11:06 am

The begining was truely awesome, I don't think anyone in the theatre didn't laugh thier asses off. I agree with most reviews I've read in that the middle was a bit slow. the ending was good, but you could see that the writers were having a hard time trying to keep things rolling for 86 mins. I thought the characters were all great, although I was sorry that the Skeeter and DP (The Frat Aliens) were not in the movie. I know they are minor characters in the show, but the Frat Aliens episode is one of my favorites. I'll give it 7.5 Run over babies in the parking lot, out of 10 .

I'll give it two gay rating systems out of 10.

I saw it the first day it came out. I felt the same way. Unfortunately, we were a bit late so I missed apparently the best part.
