November has always been a strange month to me. I know for many, it's the month where you celebrate Thanksgiving and watch a lot of football, but I honestly don't care about either of those things. I'm not a fan of football and I'll take chicken over turkey any day. And Thanksgiving parades (or any parade for that matter) are about as interesting and entertaining to watch as a colonoscopy. Thanksgiving never really seemed like much of a holiday anyway, it's more like a last-minute huzzah before the nightmarish Xmas shopping frenzy goes into full effect. It's almost like Thanksgiving doesn't exist when you go to the stores too because everywhere you look it's nothing but Xmas products and decorations. For me, November has really become more of a rest period between Halloween and Xmas. Sure, I still work a lot, but I'm not out at the store every day and night looking for the latest candies and costumes.
That's not to say that November still doesn't have plenty of stuff worth writing about. Quite the contrary. One of my favorite things about November is that Jones Soda puts out their annual Holiday Packs. They're always guaranteed to bring you some laughs, especially if you can convince a friend to actually drink a "Pea" or "Antacid" flavored soda (plus some of the proceeds go to good charities like St. Jude Children's Research Hospital). The holiday packs are more what dares are based on rather than sodas you'd really want to drink. Though it seems that they're trying to partially combat that this year as they also released a "Dessert Pack" for the 2006 holiday season which contains a variety of pie flavored sodas - Key Lime, Banana Cream, Blueberry, Cherry and Apple. You can check out our big feature taste test / morning news parody of all their new sodas HERE. Let me know what ya think!
This November also marks the release of the Nintendo Wii, and while I never preorder these things or buy them on the first day, I can't hide my excitement over trying out this new system. I've said it before and I'll say it again; while other companies seem to just want to upgrade the graphics and power of the system, Nintendo is trying to rethink how games are played and trying to bring us something NEW. I really can't wait to try out all these new games, but I also won't lie when I say I'm dying to get my hands on the Metal Slug Anthology disc. All the Metal Slug games on one disk? Sold!
In other news, we're hoping to have our next flash game out sometime early next month and I think it's really looking good so far. Can't wait to show it to you guys! Also, congrats to Dean Vanderkolk of Orion, MI on winning our Halloween Prize Pack contest which was a tie-in with our 2006 Scary-Ass Cards collection! I'm gonna be sending out his box full o' Halloweeny goodies in the next couple of days or so.
Gobble, gobble. (Big points to anybody who actually remembers the "Turkey Television" sketch comedy show on Nickelodeon - it's one of my favorite exports from Canada and it needs to be put on DVD. And no, it didn't have anything to do with Thanksgiving, it's just that whenever I think about Thanksgiving or turkeys, I'm reminded of the show)
Random Survey: What else do you guys like / dislike about November?
Random Survey #2: Are you getting a Nintendo Wii? If so, do you plan on getting it the day they come out or are you gonna wait a while for the hoopla to die down?
Aughndibi (Guest) on 11/06/2006 5:18 pm
To answer your first question, I actually like the weather cooling down a bit, the leaves changing, and the overall relaxed nature that Fall brings to everyone. What I don't like is the fact that it gets frickin' freezing around this time of the year in Michigan.
For the second survey, I actually preordered the Wii last Summer. I'm going to pick it up the day it comes out, along with a second nunchuck and wiimote, and Marvel Ultimate Alliance. Oh yes.
And Metal Slug Anthology is going to kick all kinds of ass. Like, twenty different kinds of ass.
Ninjawolf (Guest) on 11/06/2006 5:19 pm
I do like the whole concept of the Wii, especially the fact that Nintendo actually realized that the Wii controller would basically suck for any game that didn't use motion sensers (with the exception of the NES games which will aparantly be availble for download because if you rotate the Wii controler its basically the same as the original rectangular NES controller) and is actually backwards compatible with the Gamecube controllers (at least thats what I heard on some thing about the new Super Smash Bros game, though this could be false). However, I really do think Nintendo will fail again this time if not for the simple reasons of game developers won't really make games for them, which was one of the major issues with the Gamecube. It will probably be last again this time, but it probably won't lose near as bad as last time with how badly the 360 has flopped.
By the way Rog, really sucks you couldn't try any of Jone's Halloween Sodas. I had the Monster Mojito flavor not long after they first came out and it was pretty good. Still, this year they didn't base the flavors on traditionally Halloween treats such as candy corn.

this and ycdtotv, super huge when i was young. bananaman and superted were also kick arse.

I like November because it marks my Birthday also good weather in Florida. I'm getting a Wii on launch day particularly looking foward to Zelda Twilight Princess. Also the name Hellman is it based on that show you were parodiying or something else? (I'm particularly curious cause it's my last name)
Adam (Guest) on 11/06/2006 8:37 pm
November is a nice cool-down month. How can you call Xmas shopping hellish? I think it's the most hilarious thing in the world.
As for the Wii, I'd love to like it, but it just shouts "gimmick" at me.
Frances (Guest) on 11/06/2006 9:01 pm
Not a big fan of November. It's one of those crappy weather months in Indy and everyone starts getting mean around here.
I'd really want to get the Wii, but the necessity of aquiring a vehicle with a muffler still attached before it starts snowing overrides that idea.
Ilya (Guest) on 11/06/2006 9:19 pm
I like november...because my birthday is tomorrow...
nov 7
And im gonna get wii on launch date as a birthday present with red steel (Sorry i just dont like zelda puzzles)
Shane Skekel (Guest) on 11/06/2006 9:20 pm
The only thing I do not like about November, Louisiana's unpredictable climate.
I'm definitely getting a Wii. A lot of the games for the PS2 (and the original PS) weren't that good anyway.
teknotheef (Guest) on 11/06/2006 9:45 pm
I for one am getting 600 dollars of Wii-ness on midnight of Sunday/Saturday. I'm so freaking excited I'll just about crap my pants at the word Wii. and on a side note, I definitely miss the extreme beverage testers...
zacH (Guest) on 11/06/2006 10:19 pm
1) Usually, I love it, 'cause it's the only time of year my mom (hey, I'm in high school, so sue me) makes scalloped pineapple - easily the best dessert ever. But I'm getting my wisdom teeth out two days before, so, uh, not so much this year.
2) HELLZ YEAH! Got a job a few weeks ago just so I could get a Wii, and I'm gonna have a huge party at my house beforehand. I know what I'm gonna be thankful for...well, that and nitrous oxide.
Debra (Guest) on 11/07/2006 12:54 am
I like the fact that summer is long gone and it's cooling off. I'm not crazy about Thanksgiving though as it's one of those holidays where they serve all sorts of food I don't like. Thanksgiving is the vegetarian holiday for me as I don't care for turkey or ham.. hehe.
And... um.. this is the first I've heard of the Wii. Does that answer your question?
Cpt. Beardless (Guest) on 11/07/2006 1:36 am
Hay, November marks the month when I finally grow older! Yay! Otherwise, its not that great.. its not really winter and its not autumn either.. its just a stupid month that has the craziest weather of all!
The Wii, eh? I think I'll be content with my computer and Gamecube/PS2 for now. But I'm really interested in trying one, just to see how it works! :) Anyways, it'll probably be released five years later here in europe anyways for reasons unknown so there's no rush.
Oh and the feature on Jones holiday sodas was great! :D I wish we had sodas like that here.. I mean, the most bizzare thing I've ever tasted in soda form was just some bad sugar-free(but with added poison for "great taste"!) knockoff of coca cola.. :\
Daniel85 (Guest) on 11/07/2006 3:22 am
I want a Wii for Christmas, just so I can do a 'Nintendo 64 Kid' impression. I don't think my family would appreciate the internet humor, though. My grandma would probably start crying... "Why is he doing this?"
As for November, it's just kinda a bleh month for me. No Thanksgiving in Australia.
Mike (Guest) on 11/07/2006 3:22 am
I'm pretty excited about the Wii coming out this month. (That sounds kind of disgusting...) I really want one so I can play Red Steel and the new Zelda game.
I totally remember Turkey TV. I remember it would come on at the butt crack of dawn and would wake up just to watch it! That definitely needs to have a DVD release!
Chris (Guest) on 11/07/2006 4:52 am
November is kind of a Two-Face. It's getting dark quite early and you mow-down children without any ligthing on ther bicycles almost every day. Also here in Germany, weather starts being really cold and I already had so scrape ice off my car.
On the other hand, about ten years ago when I was a kid we had lots of fights with all the leaves. Just taking a good handfull of leaves and stuffing it into some other kid's collar was fun! And St. Martin's Day!!! Halloween hasn't really established in Germany. So kids go from door to door on November 11th, sing a song and collect candy because several centuries ago, some guy called St. Martin is said to have cut his cape into two pieces to share it with a beggar.
Of course, older Kids of about 13 or 14 years are too lazy. They just beat up smaller children in order to get their sugary joy. However, if there are older sibblings around, those studpid dumfucks get fucked theirselves so the kids have candy AND big laughs at one time. I like St. Martin's Day!
I won't get myself a Wii since I am not into consoles anymore. The best stuff was already released in the early 90's. ;-)
Dean Vanderkolk (Guest) on 11/07/2006 7:22 am
Hey, first, thanks so much for selecting me as the Halloween winner! I can't wait for the swag to arrive!
I love Winter, so November is a good month for me. I'm not heavily into family, so Thanksgiving isn't a stresser for me, so I can simply enjoy the changes in weather.
RE: the console systems, we'll be waiting to see what the children want for Xmas this year before choosing one. I'll probably pick up whichever they don't get for myself!
xscoot (Guest) on 11/07/2006 8:09 am
Not much to say about november. The wii I shall be getting with excitetruck, raving rabbids, and wii sports. On a side note, Metal slug anthology will have metal slug 1 to 6 including X and each game will have 5 modes of play. It will be able to play the original arcade version but I am unsure if it will play the ported console version. That enough for you to buy the Wii Rog?
Angryhydralisk (Wii wii?) (Guest) on 11/07/2006 8:58 am
1a. I kinda like this month if only for my birthday (Which was a very laid-back kind of birthday.) and to take a day off to stuff your face (With or without man size wads).
1b. I hate it because it's the end of Halloween and a slow premise to another snowless Kentucky winter.
2. I almost want to get one for the wonky controller and all the other rumors. If it can really download old Nintendo games, it's gonna be Goldeneye, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, and Street Fighter for me. Plus I want to play the new Smash Bros.
Anywhom, off-subject, but I found a very interesting candidate for "Albums That Sucked"...

Survey #1: November is the gamer's month- like 80% of the high profile games are launched in or near November to make them readily available for holiday shoppers. That said, I love all the great new content released, but I hate my bank account balance between spending on myself and starting on x-mas shopping.
Survey #2: Yes, I've already had a reservation on the system for over a month now. I plan on picking up Zelda: Twilight Princes and Trauma Center: Second Opinion on day one, and maybe Metal Slug if I still have any money left.
Luke (Guest) on 11/07/2006 2:21 pm
I really don't think the Wii is going to fail because it's gimmicky. What they've done is introduce a new concept while still giving developers an option to use a normal control scheme (The nunchuck style, game cube controller, and that weird snes looking controller). So we're still going to get normal games, such as Zelda, but get different ones like excite truck or tony hawk down hill jam.
It may SEEM gimmicky, but so did the DS at first. In fact I met a lot of naysayers. Myself included. It took them a year or two to figure out how to make it not seem gimmicky but I think nintendo learned their lesson. Use the gimmick when the gimmick is needed, and when it's not nessicary don't use it. Period. It's that simple and it's now it's rediculously hard to keep up with demand.
Combine that with the fact that EA is pledging huge support for the system, and that it's going to be much cheaper to devlop for compared to the other systems. People are going to be able to invest in new concepts. Companies don't want to put out a game like Katamari Damacy when it may be 100 million dollars to create and then completely flop. That's why we see so many sequals, and sports games. They're gaurnteed and they're stagnating the market. At least with the Wii there is a chance that companies will take a new idea and run with it.
In short, while we are going to see some crappy gimmicky games, we're also going to have the opportunity to see things that have NEVER been done before. New experiences, new francieses, hell maybe even new companies. All because it's low cost to develop for, low cost for consumers, and is very flexible in terms of control style. What I see in this is pure potential, which is more than I can say for PS3 or 360.
Brad G. (Guest) on 11/07/2006 4:04 pm
Well, for starters my birthday is in November.
And when I was younger I always had Halloween candy to eat before the turkey. We also used to get school breaks.
November also helps me remember pilgrims being thankful for what they have, only to take more from the Indians later. :(
Eric (Guest) on 11/07/2006 5:43 pm
I hate that november is the month before my classes get out, meaning I have to scramble to finish my stories and papers and turn them in over and over again until the professors feel they are somewhat acceptable. I like that I get to go home and visit my family and get a week off from grad school this way.
I haven't bought a new system since playstation one, and caught myself getting angry at that old Equinox game for SNES that I was playing on an emulator. Cranky old man at 24? You bet I am.
Billy (Guest) on 11/07/2006 6:23 pm
I remember Turkey TV... That's where I discovered one of the greatest songs, and greatest videos, of all time. "Fish heads, fish head, roley poley fish heads... Fish heads, fish heads, eat them up, yum!"
"I took a fish head out to see a movie. Didn't have to pay to get him in!"
Jason Kaine (Guest) on 11/07/2006 7:04 pm
i'm getting a Wii one way or another...and btw i was looking up the cast of the greatest american hero on imdb.com and found robert culp in a place i didn't expect...he's the voice of dr wallace breen in half life 2.
ColdFusion (Guest) on 11/07/2006 8:06 pm
I got an NES in 1993, an SNES in 1996, an n64 in 1998, and a gamecube in, like, late 2001.. What's the connecting theme here? They were all 99 bucks by then.. and I'll be damned if I'm buying Wii until it's under 150.
Aks (Guest) on 11/07/2006 8:28 pm
Novemeber is great for me! Thats when my birthday is. Which was the 5th so now Im 15 yay! Also I AM GETTING A WII AND ZELDA. Damn straight! You can only imagine the chaos it is when Im there. Im like knocking over crying kids and old ladies. THEYRE GOING TO BE MINE!! ALL MIIIIIIIINE!!!!!! Hahaha
Guy (Guest) on 11/07/2006 9:25 pm
Does Metal Slug Anthologies have the games they put out for the Neo Geo Pocket?
I gots me one of those things, and those two have got to be the hardest Slugs of them all...
Blodigar (Guest) on 11/07/2006 10:21 pm
I always found Thanksgiving to be a day that was slowly eaten alive by the amorphous blob that is Christmas, so I'm not all too fond of the it.
As for the other survey, I'm not getting a Wii anytime soon mostly because my brother was one of the many victims to the glitchey PS2s that released, so I'm one of those "once bitten twice shy" kind of people. Oh and another reason why I'm not getting a Wii yet is that I already have a preorder of the new Castelvania DS game.
Tim (Guest) on 11/08/2006 12:55 am
Yeah, November feels like a four-week-long chance to catch my breath between MY Christmas, Halloween, and the Christmas everybody else likes to celebrate. Keep up the great work!
Ragnarok (Guest) on 11/08/2006 12:57 am
First survey:I like Thanksgiving, if only cause cranberry sauce is awesome and feels "wrong" any other time of the year. But yeah, months pretty dull. It wishes it was October or December but it's not.
Second:Not even crossing my mind a this point. People seem very excited that Nintendo is going to "innovate" gaming and change everything was we know but I'm not seeing alot of proof of this right now.
Zelda:The control scheme might seem neat and interesting now, but I can see it wearing thin, and many will wish they could resort to a GCN controller.
Red Steel:A subpar light gun shooter. But hey, you can turn the gun SIDEWAYS.
SSBB: Well, this is innovative...we use the controller we were using LAST generation.
Personally I'm holding out and getting a PS3 when they become more common. I know Sony anally rapes me as a consumer but what can I say? It's where the third parties flock.
amy (Guest) on 11/08/2006 1:51 am
november is the time of the year that i get to look forward to thanksgiving, the delightful day when my family gets too drunk and fights in the front lawn. after thanksgiving i get to look forward to christmas, the delightful day when my family gets to drunk and fights on the front lawn, bahaha!
anyways, i've never heard of the wii, but i know that my bofriend will probaby want it, ha!
Richardn1 (Guest) on 11/08/2006 7:07 am
I live in canada so i had my thanksgiving in october, and i totally agree with RoG when he says that he'd pick chicken over turkey, i saw what some of the people do to the turkey at the slaughter houses, you'll never guess how many penis's have been in your turkey (I'm sorry that was vulgar I just wanted to say that, but its true) any way, I cant choose between a Wii or an XBox 360, and Rog I thought it was just Tom Fulp that liked Metal Slug and not you, hmm... Cool. I spent over 100$ on metal slug 1 at the convenience store and i've only beaten it once. heh. RoG I've recently started drinking some of the jones soda's, like the rootbeer and the straw berry lime and there awesome! thanks dude. Also RoG If you think I should get a Wii then i'll tell Microsoft to go fuck himself :)
Guji (Guest) on 11/08/2006 7:37 am

IM ON DEVANTART!

I'm with you on Nintendo and it's desire to really change how gaming works. I've been a Nintendo fan-boy for ages, and have owned every system they have put out (even the ill-fated VirtualBoy).
Alas, I was unable to secure a first-wave release, but am eagerly awaiting word of when the second shipment will come out, at least up here in the frozen wastes of Canada.
And, WIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!
-RoG- (Guest) on 11/09/2006 3:23 am
Ninjawolf, actually, I did get to try all of the Jones Halloween sodas. You might have noticed Count Pop pouring a bottle of the Monster Mojito flavor for Pop Bride in their recent adventure! But yeah, I just had way too many more important things to review this past Halloween season. I was hoping to make a blog post about what I thought of all of them, but I just didn't have the time. Several of the flavors were repeats from last year anyway. Hope ya liked the taste test of all the Jones holiday sodas we just put up though!
eep!, Bananaman was all kinds of awesome. Glad to hear somebody else remembers that one too!
JB, yes, Hellman is a simple spoof on the name of the producer of the morning show with Regis & Kelly. Or maybe I just wanted to make fun of YOU since it's your last name. I guess you'll never know for sure.
Adam, Xmas shopping *is* hellish if you have to participate in it. It's hilarious if you just get to sit back and watch it. Me? I'm gonna try doing most if not all of my holiday shopping online.
Debra & Amy, you've both found your way onto the internet and yet this is the first time you've heard of the Wii? How can this be?
Dean Vanderkolk, congrats again on being the lucky Halloween goodies pack winner. Hope you enjoy it!
xscoot, yeah, I'm really glad it's gonna have the 6th Metal Slug game on there. But no, I was sold on the Wii/Revolution long before I heard about the Metal Slug Anthology release.
Angryhydralisk, funny you mention that cuz we just put up a new album by Gunther! But whatever candidate you have discovered, by all means, email me the details and I'll consider it for a future review. Not making any promises of course, but will definitely check into it!
Jesse B, ah the good old Turkey Television theme song. It's almost as good as the music that they played during the sketch where they showed a guy making and eating peanut butter sandwiches at ridiculously high speeds. I think that was my favorite thing on Turkey TV ever. I'd kill to see that again.
Billy, yep, Fish Heads song was on there and so was Dana Carvey's classic "Choppin' Broccoli" song... LONG before he did it on Saturday Night Live.
Guy, hrm maybe the portable anthology will have those on it, but I don't think the one for the Wii does? Not sure though. I'd definitely like to play 'em though as I never had the Neo Geo Pocket.
Richardn1, if you like Metal Slug, you should look for a game called "In The Hunt" - it's another classic side-scrolling shooter game with the exact same kind of graphics as Metal Slug, only you're in a submarine! Good times.
Quinton, I think you and I are the only two people who owned a Nintendo Virtual Boy and didn't go blind. I still see red spots every now 'n then though...
And damn; a lot of you were born in November!
Ninjawolf (Guest) on 11/09/2006 8:32 pm
I found a book today that I think you'd find intresting. Its Grande Illusions Book 2 (I've never really seen book 1, though with how good this one seems I'll probably get that one when I see it) Its written by Tom Savini (with an introduction by Dick Smith) who did special effects and/or make up for such notable horror films as Friday the 13th 1 and 4, Dawn and Day of the Dead and the 1990 remake of Night of the Living Dead as well as such seemingly unknowns as Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (which he honestly admits to sucking)and Monkey Shines which is about a helper monkey for a paralyzed man that is telepathically linked to its master and kills people from his frustration. Also, it could possibly help you with the zombie movie once you get enough to have to really consider "okay, now how are we going to do this?"
Aks (Guest) on 11/09/2006 9:50 pm
Dude there a wii with Zelda on ebay for like 700-800 dollars. This reminds me of the fucking 360. Whats the matter with people?
Courage (Guest) on 11/10/2006 7:21 am
I'm buying Wii, Red Steel, and Twilight Princess immediately and will wait in line 8 hours early until midnight. I did it for Gamecube, and this is obviously far more popular and looked forward to.
