The Matrix Halloween Phenomenon.

There is no spoon, but there is a skull shaped beer bong, so yeah... have at it, Neo.

Now here's something that's been going on for too many years at seasonal Halloween shops, and it's high time we get to the bottom of it. For some inexplicable reason, a variety of Halloween shops have a small section on their walls dedicated solely to action figures from The Matrix. The first time I saw them in a Halloween shop was about four years ago. I didn't think much of it at the time other than, "Huh, that's weird," and then continued looking at the rest of the Halloween goodies. But they're still out there. Now seeing them in more and more Halloween shops and I want... no... I need to know why.

Why are these places carrying Matrix figures? Costumes I can understand, but the figures have nothing to do with Halloween. Did the owners of all the Halloween shops pool their money together to buy out some huge factory surplus of old Matrix figures at a hell of a deal? Is there a secret society of Halloween Matrix fans that I'm unaware of? Did somebody tip these stores off that people who buy fine products such as Death's Head Terror and Toilet Monster would want to buy Matrix toys as well?

Pumpkins need love like everything does. Muahahahahahaha!

There is no spoon. There is no logic. I now leave it up to you fine people to help solve this mystery which has plagued my last four Halloween seasons. Discuss.

"Is there a secret society of Halloween Matrix fans that I'm unaware of?"

I'll bet cash money it's this. I'm betting there is a large dedicated following to dressing up like Matrix characters and they use Halloween as one of their excuses to doing it. The toys cater to this crowd to maybe sell a figure to someone who is missing it from their collection. You never know, the internet is a weird, wild place.

I concur. That's weird.
Wait, is that- is that a skull funnel? What- no, sorry, I'm getting distracted here. Matrix action figures.
I guess shop owners think THe Matrix would sell again in this period of the year?
Or is it that they're subtly implying it's a horror movie? What, because the sequels were bad? Is it some kind of conspiracy by the guild of cinema critics out there?
Then why The Matrix? Why not Batman & Robin figures?
Or is it... is it that The Matrix taunts us at Halloween, telling us in our face that we're inside it, knowing we won't pay attention to the weirdness of merchandise during these days?
No, seriously, who'd buy that funnel? And the bottle opener, for Christ's sake! It's not like you're gonna use them the rest of the year! God, I'm sorry, I just can't put up a carefully reasoned argument here. There is no spoon but the funnel is there and it's staring at me.

It's a glitch in the Matrix. That's all

I believe I speak for the Goth Night crowds of various bars everywhere when I say that a pathetic alcoholic goth kid like myself would totally use that funnel AND that bottle opener all year round. Subtlely, slowly, solemnly whispering... chug, chug, chug, chug, to the beat of Bela Lugosi's Dead.

It's simple, really. There was such an influx of Matrix toys that don't really have any posability or play value, that even though these toys were produced like 10 years ago, we continue to be plagued with them.

There is no Matrix; only Zuul.

Company's got to get rid of these shitty action figures any way they can and Halloween is the perfect outlet to try to hook some kids strolling down the Halloween isles with there parents.

Some distributor got caught with a boatload of these unsellable things and said, "Halloween? Fuck it, put those goddamn Matrix things out. It can't hurt!"

The Matrix is so bad, it's scary.

I must say, the "squids" would make excellent halloween decorations..

I don't know, but since the Matrix generated all of the Halloween stores and action figures, we must not question them. Only Neo has the answers.

Kenji - Yes it is a Skull Funnel, in fact it's been covered on this very site way back when, sort of.

Basically the company buys wholesale overstock Mcfarlane toys at a discount. Unfortunately the toys aint the monster ones, or the monster ones went to another store in district, and they gotta sell them.

Maybe the figurines are from the sequels?
They were terrifyingly bad!

That and everyone is dressed in black.
Black = Halloween yes?

That or is it Lonely Kid Day?

What's really jumping out at me in the first photo is the skull beer funnel. I took one of those to a Halloween party a few years ago, and after hours of me and mine chugging Pabst Blue Ribbon with it, holding it aloft and screaming "FATALITIY!" after every beer, I don't remember a lot. There were photos, but most of them have been destroyed, as well as my Medusa costume which suffered damage after I apparently fell down some stairs. Ah, Halloween.

I, for one, use skull accessories and halloween-themed household items year-round. The Mrs. and I plan to buy an artificial tree that stays up all year as well; to be decorated on all holidays (St. Pat's, Valentines, Easter...etc). Yes, we're weird. (but not as weird as this matrix phenomenon)

That last picture is absolutely priceless. I've been seeing Matrix marathons on TBS like crazy, lately.
