The Greatest Local Business Commercials, Including Crazy Eddie!

I won't be beat! But maybe you can beat my graphic designer for me... please?

I have a confession to make: I've always been extremely entertained by local business commercials. Put on a Coca-Cola commercial and I can barely even sit through the entire thing without wanting to stand up and scream, but commercials produced for and by local companies? I could watch 'em all day long without even blinking. I've always said that the best kind of humor is unintentional humor, and believe me, there's nothing funnier than seeing an ultra low budget commercial for a local company that was probably done by some college freshman film student. Sometimes its their catchy little jingles, sometimes it's an absurd mascot, sometimes it's an awful logo, and sometimes it's all of those things and more. Whatever the case, I think there's a lot to be said about local ads and today I want to discuss a few of my favorites. (more...)

Back In Town, Plus A Few Odd Phenomenons I Experienced In My Recent Travels.

Where's Waldo?

We're back from our trip to San Francisco and Re's art show went really well. Despite San Fran being in a rain-until-you're-underwater constant state of weather while we were there, there was a huge turnout at the show with people lined up around the building and there was barely even room to walk around in the place. I also mentioned that, in addition to the artwork, there would be a few breakdancing crews performing that night. Sure enough, they were tearin' up the floor, and as entertaining as the skilled dancers were, it simply couldn't compare to the audience members who set up their own breakdancing circle later on in the evening. Nothing like watching a completely plastered lanky dude stumbling around in the middle of the dance floor while grabbing his nipples at random intervals. Maybe it wasn't breakdancing... maybe it was his own form of a raindance, and if so, it was clearly working. (more...)

San Francisco-A-Go-Go!

'Nesting' by Marie Barr

So we're headed up to San Francisco this week because Re is in a group art show up there sponsored by Juxtapoz and we both wanted to attend it and get out of town for a few days. You know me, I'll take any opportunity to travel. Her sister is coming out for the show too, so we'll have some extra company for the long drive up which is always spiffy in my book. For those of you who live in San Fran, her show is going to be this Friday, January 25th at the 111 Minna Gallery from 9pm - 10:30pm, and then there will be an after party from 11pm - 2am. If you live within driving distance, be sure to stop by to say hey and check out all o' Re's artwork along with the other artists that will be on display!

Did I mention they're gonna have not one but two breakdancing crews performing? (more...)

doing-the-dishes-is-like-tetris

Doing The Dishes Is Like Tetris.

Dishwasher Tetris - Coming soon to the Nintendo Wii.

I know it's a fairly typical thing to say, but I really do hate doing the dishes. I hate it so much that I've often considered replacing all the dishes we own with disposable paper plates, dixie cups and plastic cutlery (sporks optional). Aside from the inherent wastefulness of going down that route, I think one of the main reasons I can't bring myself to do it is because most plastic cutlery is too weak (for example, try cutting an onion in half with a plastic knife). So yeah, I'm definitely gonna stick with real dishes until I can figure out a better solution. I also know that I shouldn't even really complain about doing them since having a dishwasher can actually be a luxury depending on where you live. I've lived in places where I had to do all the dishes by hand and that's an entirely different level of annoying. (more...)

Orbitz, The Lava Lamp Of The Beverage Industry, Still Exists!

Orbitz!

You should all know by now that I'm a huge sucker for novelty food and beverage items, so it should come as no surprise when I shout to the heavens about how ORBITZ LIVES AGAIN!!! Now before I get ahead of myself, let me explain a little bit about this amazing fruity beverage from yesteryear. Orbitz was a non-carbonated drink that was released by the Clearly Canadian company back in 1996 and featured colorful edible balls which lay suspended in the liquid. The balls were able to "defy gravity" like this because they were the same density as the liquid and had some help from the gellan gum ingredient. While the Orbitz drink itself wasn't as bad as some people made it out to be, it didn't last long in the marketplace and was sadly discontinued. That hasn't stopped it from garnering a cult following over the years however, and you can still find old bottles of it for sale on eBay (though I wouldn't recommend drinking them at this point - if you're gonna get 'em, just put 'em on display for your friends and family to gaze upon with awe). My New Aquatic Pets

We <3 Cryptobiosis

Before I went to college, I used to have pets all the time. Cats, fish, reptiles, bugs... you name it. While all the other kids were dreaming of becoming astronauts and baseball stars, I was 100% certain that I wanted to become an entomologist. One of my hobbies was catching black widow spiders in jars and then showing them to my friends, impressing them with my vast knowledge of arachnids. "See this one here? See the red hourglass symbol on it? That means it can kill ya!" Yes indeed, I was well on my way to a rewarding career in entomology. (more...)
