As I promised in my last post, here are a few photos from the Trick 'R Treat DVD release party at Golden Apple Comics (yeah, they were releasing a comic too) along with the art show that was taking place next door at Gallery 1988:
Michael Dougherty (the writer/director of the film) was on hand to sign autographs. I was gonna go say hey with him, but two fangirls were yacking his head off for like 10 minutes straight, so I decided to move onto more important things such as... (more...)
Unless you're a horror fan who's been living under a rock for the past two years, you've undoubtedly heard the cries of many fans (myself included) who were pissed off that Trick 'r Treat was never given a proper theatrical release. It was originally due to come out in theaters back in October 2007 (which would have been a perfect Halloween release instead of yet another pointless Saw film), but studio execs made the boneheaded decision to instead release it directly to DVD two years later. Keep in mind during this two year period there were plenty of crappy horror movies such as the abysmal 2008 remake of Prom Night which were given worldwide theatrical releases.
I'm one of the lucky ones who actually got to see an advance theatrical screening of the film at the San Diego Comic-Con and it's also currently playing here in Los Angeles at the New Beverly Cinema alongside "Creepshow". Between that and their recent double feature of John Carpenter's "The Thing" and "Prince of Darkness", the New Bev is making me wish they had a cots so I could just stay there all month. Hopefully some other independent theaters near you will be showing it this month, but if not, the film comes out on DVD today so you can at least see it. (more...)
Since we all need things to keep our mind preoccupied, I just wanted to remind you guys quickly that we have two Halloween contests that are ending really soon, so you had better get to work!
First up, we have the "Turn Your Own Damn Groceries Into Halloween Jack-O-Lanterns Contest" in which the title pretty much says it all. Just head out to your local grocery store and find some kind of food product to carve up for Halloween. You can carve fruits, vegetables, hot dogs... whatever you want really. If you need some inspiration, just take a look at the excellent entries that some people have already submitted. You can also check out the "Let's Make Lime-O-Lanterns" article which was the inspiration for this contest. There are some great prizes for this contest including the full "A Nightmare on Elm Street" box set and all kinds of I-Mockery merchandise, so be sure to get your entries posted in the official contest thread soon. This contest ends on Wednesday, October 7th.
In the other contest, for those of you who missed the last episode of Doc Mock's Movie Mausoleum, we're having people draw one or all of the characters from the show (Doc Mock, Miss Diagnosis, Licky, Smiley) in a circus / carnival scene of some sort. We'll be showcasing the entries on the next episode of Doc Mock's Movie Mausoleum which airs Friday, October 9th, so you'll need to have your entries submitted before then. You don't need to be an artist or anything, as many of the entries will likely be done in MS Paint or crayon... just have fun with it. The winning entry will receive the Killjoy toy which we featured on the last episode! Post your entries in the official contest thread, which already has some crazy entries.
Looking forward to seeing some more crazy entries in both contests from you guys!
In other news, I was at SC3 the other weekend, which is basically a huge gathering of classic gamers in southern California that takes place twice a year in some guy's back yard. They truck in a boatload of vintage arcade cabinets and console systems and it's all free for people to play into the wee hours of the night. Truly a fun time and I even won the grand prize in the raffle this year (a full ColecoVision system with some games 'n extra controllers) which was awesome even though I have no idea where to keep it since I have no space left in my place. I also donated some of our Pixel Posters to the raffle which turned out to be really popular with everybody. While I was there, I did a little interview with Crix Lee from GirlGamer and the video is now up online (starts around the 2:16 mark):
Alright, that's all for now. I have a big photo gallery from Knott's Scary Farm's 2009 Haunt that should be going up later this weekend, and tonight I'm heading out to Universal Studios to cover their Eyegore Awards ceremony and Halloween Horror Nights. You can expect to hear more about that next week.
October is definitely starting off in grand fashion, so let's hear about some of the things you guys are planning on doing this month! Going to see any haunted houses? How about any horror movie marathons? What be your plans this Halloween season?
I've had a bunch of people asking me if I've seen this trailer since I'm such a huge fan o' the series. Yeah, I've seen it and here it is for those of you who haven't:
You guys already know my stance on remakes... I think Hollywood should be focusing on creating original, new films rather than rehashing old ones. That said, I'll reserve my judgment of the Elm Street remake until after I've seen it. As for the one real glimpse we get of Freddy, I get that they're going for more realistic burn victim effects, but I'm not sold on his make-up yet. Freddy's old look was so iconic and we all know how many hours Englund spent sitting in a chair just to have it applied. Only thing I definitely like about the trailer is that Clancy Brown is in it... I love that guy. Whether it's Highlander, Bad Boys, The Shawshank Redemption, or the criminally underrated canceled HBO show "Carnivàle", he's always a memorable character. (And yes, I still foolishly hope there will be a Carnivàle movie some day so we get some real closure to an show that ended far too early.)
What do you guys think of the new trailer?
I went to Target the other day now that they've finally gotten on board with the 2009 Halloween season, and I'm disappointed to report that Jones Soda has once again released the same old Halloween sodas from the previous years. I always hope that they'll come out with some new "spooky" flavors each season, but they seem more interested in putting out weird holiday packs instead. Ah well, maybe next year.
The good news is that the Dr Pepper Snapple Group has just released some nice decorative mini Halloween soda cans for their 7-Up, Sunkist and A&W Root Beer brands. Sure the flavors remain unchanged, but there's no denying the desire to own miniature cans with Halloween scenery all over them. A haunted tree, jack-o-lanterns and ghosts adorn these lil' cans, but the ghosts aren't just any ghosts... they're "Chill to Thrill" ghosts!
It looks like they've taken an idea from Coors Light by copying their cold activated cans concept. Instead of having mountains turn blue, the ghosts on the cans change color when they get cold. While the Sunkist cans probably look the best of the three, what with the classic orange and black Halloween colors, I had to go with the root beers. Why? I like root beer, that's why.
As you can see, the cans live up to their claims and the ghosts do change color after being chilled in the fridge. I gotta say though, while the ghosts do change color, it's clearly not a very drastic one. It's a subtle change from silver to light blue, which is a perfect color for ghosts, but it's definitely not a bright blue. If it wasn't for the note on the cans, I probably wouldn't have even noticed that the ghosts had changed color. Still it's a minor issue and I'm more than happy to drink root beer from mini Halloween cans, whether they're haunted by ghosts or not. At least, if I drink the root beer I can say I did a good deed, for those poor specters will no longer be freezing their ectoplasmic asses off.
In other Halloween news, I went to the Knott's Scary Farm 2009 Haunt this past weekend and took plenty o' photos of the park and mazes. You can expect a new photo essay about it later in the week. Until then, you can check out the photos from when I visited the park back in 2006 here.
