New Contest For Artie, The Strongest Man In The World!

Send in your entries for Artie to see!

We're holding a new contest this week and I'd really like all of you to participate. Why? Because, if you're a fan of The Adventures of Pete & Pete, you'll be excited to hear that Artie, the Strongest Man in the World will be viewing each and every one of your entries! Yep, the one and only Toby Huss is going to be our guest on Doc Mock's Movie Mausoleum this Friday night! So lemme explain the contest.

First off, you do NOT have to be a real artist to participate in this. It doesn't matter if you want to draw it in Photoshop, MS Paint or even with finger paints... we'll be judging these entries solely on creativity and humor, not artistic talent. So, to enter the contest, all you need to do is draw Artie interacting with the cast of Doc Mock's Movie Mausoleum in any way you see fit. He could be saving them from danger, he could be enjoying a snack with them... whatever comes to your mind really. Once you have your entry created, simply post it in the official contest blog thread or you can email it to me. Make sure your entries are turned in no later than 5pm PST on Friday, February 12th. If you turn them in any later than that, I can't guarantee they'll make it onto the show. Lastly, if you're a fan of any of Toby's other characters, including "The Wiz" from Seinfeld and "Stumpy" from Carnivàle, you're more than welcome to submit entries involving them as well. And yes, feel free to enter as many times as you like.

After you've turned in your entries, just kick back and watch the live show on Friday night at 10pm PST and we'll be displaying any of the entries that were submitted and letting Toby comment on each of them! A winner will then be selected to receive an autographed poster! I wanna see entries from all of you guys whether you can stay up and watch the episode or not. After all, you can always see what Toby had to say about your entries in the archived version of the show.

Alright, so you've got all week to churn out some great entries involving Artie, Doc, Miss D, Licky, Smiley and anybody else you'd like to include, so get crackin' on 'em. Good luck to all of you who enter! Pipe!

Hope to see all of you in the live chat rooms tonight!

Also, just to let you guys know in advance, I'm extremely excited about our guest next week, because I grew up watching him as Artie, the Strongest Man in the World, on the Adventures of Pete & Pete. In addition to being the voice of "Kahn" on King of the Hill, "Mike" on Reno 911, and "The Wiz" on Seinfeld, he's also played Felix 'Stumpy' Dreifuss in one of my all-time favorite shows, Carnivàle. That's right, Toby Huss is going to be our guest on February 12th, so be sure to catch that one live!

Yes Sir, Dollar General, Sir!

I was searching through some of my files earlier today and found some photos that I completely forgot to post over the holidays. Of course, I had moose mugs and peppermint crunch Junior Mints on my mind at the time, so it's easy to see how a guy could forget to update his blog. Fortunately, this isn't really a holiday season entry, so it doesn't matter that I'm finally getting around to posting it in February.

In December, we paid a visit to Nags Head to visit some family for the holidays. This was my first time there during the winter, which isn't too surprising considering it's a beach town and everything there dies down after the summer. Trust me, the desire to ride a jet ski or a banana boat drops in conjunction with the temperature of the water.

Way to go! Have fun with that repair bill, Popeye.

That said, there are still ways to entertain yourself in a beach town during the winter season. For one thing, you can tour the damage done to the beaches and the docks of the nearby marinas. As you can see in the photo above, the bad weather has a knack for exposing novice sailors who don't know how to tie a spring line and end up having their boats ram up against the docks whenever it gets real windy out.

Aside from that, you can check out the local shops, but many of them close up during the winter since there aren't many vacationers in town. So where can you go? To the Outer Banks Dollar General store!

It's like going to a really bad carnival, only cheaper.

Yes indeedy, the Dollar General store has long been a source of amusement for me over the years, because they're basically a bastion of ultra-cheap, generic products that no other other store was able to sell. So, while we were in Nags Head, we decided to pay a visit to the Dollar General and here are some of the amazing products we found: (more...)

The Pee-wee Herman Show.

The Pee-wee Herman Show - performance from 1/24/10 at Club Nokia!

Amazing. AMAAAAAZING! There are many amazing things I've experienced ever since we made that long journey across the country some years ago, but getting to see Pee-wee Herman perform live on stage was the fulfillment of a childhood dream. The guy is a comedy hero for me and I couldn't even begin to count how many times my friends and I have quoted lines from Pee-wee's Big Adventure over the years.

So the show was taking place at Club Nokia, which from the outside appears to be a huge place since it's right near the Staples Center here in LA, but the truth is that it's a very small venue. As a result, the seats we had were amazing and it felt like a very up close and personal performance. I can't really explain just how excited I was when Pee-wee first came out on stage, and I was instantly whisked back to my childhood as he made the entire audience stand up and say the Pledge of Allegiance before the show begin. And when those curtains rose to unveil his playhouse, complete with all of my favorite characters such as Conky, Chairry, Magic Screen, Jambi and more... man oh man... I was a kid again.

Seeing that amazing playhouse set right before your eyes with Pee-wee and the rest of the gang was nothing short of amazing. Remember, before the movies and the TV show, the Pee-wee Herman Show was performed on stage at the Groundlings Theatre in the early eighties, so this was essentially Paul Reubens returning to his roots. I have to say, while he's obviously a bit older now, Paul is looking great for his age and his performance as Pee-wee did not disappoint in any way. Running around the stage frantically, making everybody in the audience scream the word of the day ("FUN!"), singing songs, and basically doing everything that made the Pee-wee character so memorable in the first place... Paul didn't miss a single beat.

Pee-wee sat down for a long Q&A session and walked all around the club to interact directly with members of the audience!

What none of us expected, however, was what happened after the show. Since this was his their last performance before having their first day off in a month, Paul sat down with the audience (still in his Pee-wee costume) and had an extremely long Q&A session with the audience. He's been doing Q&A sessions after all of his shows, but he's had to cut most of them short, 20-30 minutes tops. Ours was well over an hour, and you could tell that it was because he really wanted to be there and was so happy to see that people still loved the Pee-wee character that much after so many years. Seeing him give advice to a little girl about following her dreams about becoming an actress was simultaneously heartwarming and inspirational.

All in all, it was an incredible evening, and I really hope Paul gets to make the new Pee-wee film he's been talking about for a while now. Also, for those of you not in LA, he didn't confirm it, but there have been some hints that the show may go on the road to a few places as Vegas and Broadway were both mentioned. I'm hoping they'll put it out on DVD as well considering how much effort and work clearly went into this big production, but it's really something you have to see in person. So keep an eye on the world of Pee-wee Herman, and if you have the opportunity, do not pass up the chance to see that show.

On a final note, as if the show wasn't amazing enough, before Pee-wee ran off the stage, he took off his ring and threw it out into the crowd. Take a guess who caught it? Yep, I like to think that my childlike fervor for Mr. Herman willed that ring to come my way so I could then give it to Re to end the show on a perfect note.

And while we're here talking about Pee-wee, why not take a moment and look back at a few of my older articles:

Now if you'll excuse me, my bike is missing and somebody told me they saw it in the basement of the Alamo.
