You can also get a nasty scratch from ejecting the disc, after shutting the system off, too early :x If you're really worried about the red ring, you can check the power brick to see if it says "175w" on it, or look through the vents with a flashlight to see if there are two copper coils, to see if it has the Falcon Chipset. If it's an older model, you might be able to find one of those fans that helps to prevent overheating.

Not really. If the disc is being read and you press the eject button, it won't stop spinning as the tray slides out. I have it standing up to prevent that.
