i still think that 'chemical imbalance' mental disorders are bullshit, since every single person ever i've known who has had one is sedentary and lives off of cool ranch doritos

this segues nicely into a discussion of my own mental deterioration. before, i was always depressed and hated myself. after diet and exercise, i now instead hate everyone else and am looking into becoming a sociopath, because that's apparently how everyone else has been doing it all along and i never got the memo.

so it's not rly a secret that i regularly visit /fit/ on the chons

it's apparently a common problem once you start working out to start judging others, especially women. i'm now acutely aware of how little effort women put into their bodies, and it pisses me off that they still pull tail. some of them actually get exponentially more praise the more cakes they eat!

it starts a slow burn of rage in my soul

yeah so anyway most women aren't attractive to me anymore because i can see they're all flabby in unfeminine ways. i'm only attracted to fit guys in an artistic sense. this narrows down my interests to reasonably fit girls and emo boys, but i'm pretty sure i couldn't love the second group.

WHAT IS UP CHOJIN

I dunno, the only people I know with mental disorders have kept it to themselves

I just found out that one of my best friends is a spaz because he has to choos etween his ADD meds (he actually has ADHD pretty bad, COMPLETE spaz) and his schizo meds

He's been in terror of seeing shit like angels crawling down the walls to get him for about twelve years now, and I never had any idea. I thank God I never had to deal with shit like THAT

Chojin

i feel there's dissonance in my life between who i am now and the people i've historically surrounded myself with. i hate most nerd mannerisms and seem to have more in common with 'normal' people, yet i've spent all my life liking nerd things and don't want to stop doing that. i have 3 or so circles of friends and still only like very few of them. i don't want to cut anyone off because i have fun with them sometimes and i feel it's important to get in the habit of leaving the house and talking to people, but it all just feels very empty.

i usually feel better when i'm working or regularly going to school, but circumstances have fuct my academic plans for the next year and now i have to get a job in the industry i'm pursuing, which is itself notorious for employing the same exact type of person i just described that i dislike.

i've been thinking lately about how i wish i had figured out how to stop being a self-loathing fat piece of shit back in high school, when i could have networked with different people and trained myself to like different things later on. It's rather pointless to agonize over, though.

Hell, it's hard to give workout advice to a girl, cause YOU'RE doing shit like incline push-ups and pull ups and squat thrusts and that shit doesn't really apply to the female figure

don't be retarded and propagate this bullshit. men and women should use the same exact lifting routines, women will just have lower numbers with upper body exercises. people seem to be convinced that if a woman touches a barbell she'll turn into Chyna, which would be funny if it weren't 'common knowledge' and making me buttmad on a daily basis. we don't have different muscles. maybe if you were talking about cats i would agree that the different physiology demands different maneuvers. even then, when you exercise cats you tends to do the same bodyweight exercises you do with humans.

there's a world of difference between weightlifting and being a powerlifter, and that goes for both women and men.

Chojin
Jul 6th, 2011, 07:09 AM
women are always like "i don't want gross muscles i just want to tone and firm up lol"

there are two things in your body affected by exercise: fat and muscle. reducing both makes you look anorexic. reducing the latter makes you look skinnyfat and you'll still have a belly (see: all women). reducing the first makes you look "toned". maintaining muscle mass on a calorie deficit requires you to stress those muscles enough to convince your body to cannibalize its fat resources instead. women naturally have more subcutaneous fat, so they can carry more muscle on the same frame while still appearing soft and curvy. in fact, that's the only way to achieve that look. :themoreyouknow

i have what is affectionately called "happy fat" right now. i gained 15 pounds in my nesting "lets stay in bed and cuddle for 6 months" period of my current relationship. So now the object of the game is to lose 20-30 lbs by next spring so i can look pretty in a wedding dress. i know what i need to do and it's not like it's hard, but i desperately miss my workout room in my old house.
also: soon-to-be-mr-dixie likes me with a big butt so i guess it's not all bad. i just don't like the way i look in evening gowns at the moment.

Couple years ago my little brother watched some insane show with a little boy and a whale with a black woman as a voice all the time, I couldn't believe how funny it was. The whole thing was on a dock or something. I remember being vividly relieved that I no longer had to hear pedalboard and the hellspawned voice of spongebob in the background every time I saw him.

Now whenever the guy I'm sharing the house with's son visists he watches lots of insane shows, like something called Chowder, another called Regular Show, and another about a freakish kid with a yellow talking dog. Couple years ago my little brother watched some insane show with a little boy and a whale with a black woman as a voice all the time, I couldn't believe how funny it was.

That would be the Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack. I loved the R. Crumb/nautical etching style that it had going on as well as how creepy that it could get when they had someone like Penn Ward (who does Adventure Time) in charge of the episode. I wish I wasn't so damn unmotivated/lazy to get into animation, but with my level of creative apathy, I haven't even been able to finish a complete comic since about 2006.

Also I learned something while switching doctor's offices today: my last shrink had no sense of humor. A while ago during an appointment I made a joke about getting drunk on mouthwash and getting a back-alley sex change. When I looked over my case files on the ride to give them to my new doctor, I noticed that my old doctor had recently added "gender identity disorder" to my other diagnoses. Thanks, Dr. Cant Take A Joke! Good thing I never made an offhand remark about pipe bombs or murder around you.

Chojin, how is the simple advice I gave faulty

In my case, small benchmarks means three pounds a month, not quite reached but close enough at two months. 12 months in a year, three pounds per month, which means a plan of 36 pounds gone in a year. Except instead of popping off about 36 pounds gone in a year, I make a smaller more realistic goal of 3 lb per month, which is easily accomplished and EXACTLY THE SAME THING. This is backed by no more red meat, less rice and pasta, eating yogurt and not skipping breakfast, light dinners, riding a bike to my second job instead of driving, manning up and going for jogs on thursdays and tuesdays.

Did i advise THAT shit? No, I just recommended short term goals to reach a long-term goal, which is an incredibly basic strategy that applies to any damn thing you want to accomplish

okay sure, but pounds are not fat. tracking poundage is a mistake if you're doing any kind of exercise and aren't obese. also it wasn't necessarily all wrong info, i just don't like it when amateurs give advice on anything because the info is either anecdotal or regurgitated from hearsay. DONNY YOU'RE OUT OF YOUR ELEMENT

>This is backed by
>no more red meat,

why, that's the only natural source of creatine

>less rice and pasta

why, starches are the best carbs

>eating yogurt

i like yogurt but it's hardly worth mentioning in a diet plan because it doesn't do anything other than have calories.

>not skipping breakfast

common myth that this helps fat loss, only an old study shows this and it's more likely that the group that went without breakfast had poor eating habits to begin with, only one of which was skipping meals and then gorging at night. i usually eat breakfast myself, but that's because i'm hungry when i wake up. again, it's not really worth mentioning.

>light dinners

meaning what? every meal should be "light". ty for not brosciencing at me about 6 meals/day though.

>riding a bike to my second job instead of driving
>manning up and going for jogs on thursdays and tuesdays

cardio is pretty ok weight loss but not muscle-sparing weight loss. resistance training is much more important on a diet; otherwise your best result will be becoming skinnyfat. this is of course unless your cardio is especially intense, but then it's anaerobic exercise anyway.

>I just recommended short term goals to reach a long-term goal

so you recommend using the division symbol. great protip!

my advice is to set a goal and then just track your progress while you work to achieve it. if you're achieving it too slowly, either you're doing it wrong or you need to do something else. setting up milestones is for fags who need constant self-reassurement.

Honestly, the people who I've had the biggest arguments over it with eat fast food multiple times on a weekly basis and then try to convince me that "the only time [they] ever lose weight" was when they ate more than three meals a day

there are tons of myths in the fitness community, and it's why i encourage people who haven't studied it to not give advice.

Here's a good article from a respected nutritionist and author on why 6 meals is stupid: http://www.bodyrecomposition.com/research-review/meal-frequency-and-energy-balance-research-review.html#more-1389

This guy wrote a book on intermittent fasting and also cites credible studies himself, in this article he discusses some myths about fasting which includes the "gotta eat breakfast" thing: http://www.leangains.com/2010/10/top-ten-fasting-myths-debunked.html

I disagree with him on working out while fasted, though--I perform much worse if I haven't had starch carbs before lifting, and another writer I respect more on the topic on training recommends something on the order of 50g starch carb/protein both before and after your workout (basically making sure those things are in your pre and post meals) and timing your shake immediately before and after the session: http://www.wannabebig.com/diet-and-nutrition/is-there-a-limit-to-how-much-protein-the-body-can-use-in-a-single-meal/

I still need to e-mail them to find out if they can include my cigarette holder and my dog in the final painting.

It's a shame they don't do world war 2 posters, since most of my friends say I look like a fat hitlerbaby.

also you seem to have difficulty discerning cause from effect. I got depression > thn got fat and never recovered, not the other way around

no u

again with the fatness. were you exercising and eating a normal amount of calories before you got depressed? no. no you were not.

you acted unconscionably, then you got depressed, then you got fat. the 2nd and 3rd steps aren't even really related; fatness and depression are only linked because they're symptoms of the same problem, and also because it's depressing to look in a mirror.

if you were to eat well and exercise well for a month, you would feel much better. of course at this point it's a catch-22. i needed an epiphany to get me started, but i'm hoping abuse over the internet will have to do for you.

So faggots, how's not being on drugs working out for you? Are you enjoying your tubby sobriety? Huh?

@Chojin: I've been making a haphazard effort to be more physically active lately, but I'm probably doing it wrong. My favorite thing is just going out and running/jogging a few miles while pretending I'm getting chased by Daleks, but I'm afraid that'll make my thighs balloon up like OAO, and after about a month I'm not seeing a lot of changes in my figure. I guess my stomach is slightly flatter. I can forgive the man for killing himself, but the last couple of books he put out before he finally pulled the trigger were just boring and painful to read.

If anything my relapse is just putting me a little behind my in creative schedule. I've done some pretty neat shit, like my shrine and my specimen jars, but just haven't had the motivation to draw in a while. Hipsters?
I was out on the Drag (Guadalupe street; a lot of hipsters, college students, and hobos frequent there; it's got a lot of indie stores and restaurants. Fun times can be had) with my friend and girlfriend; we were heading to a piercing/tattoo place to look at stuff. I had my arm around my girlfriend, and some college girls, not very great looking, yelled out the window "HEE HEE HEE IS THIS AN EXCLUSIVE RELATIONSHIP OR CAN I GET IN ON THIS?", to which I yelled back something like "OHOHOH you're soooo funny! Go back to your Communications major, bitches". Not too great a story. However, when we were upstairs in the piercing section looking at jewelry, we heard giggling coming up the stairs, and lo and behold there they were. I immediately bellowed out "COME BACK FOR A SECOND ROUND, HUH, SALLY?", and they all went straight back out the door.
I fucking hate college bimbos.

gw: no one gets strong or hueg by accident. oao got stupid quads because he ate a lot and did a ton of squats. btw starting strength will have you squatting every day, so it's probably a bad idea if you want to avoid big legs. it should be said that oao's problem is not that his quads were huge, but the rest of him was hilariously underdeveloped.

fit's sticky is very good. there is no such thing as 'muscle tone' or 'being toned'; the two variables you can control are muscle mass and fat mass. if you want visible abs, you will need a pretty low bodyfat% and lots of abdominal muscle. since your abs are a big part of your core, you might as well hit them with core-strengthening exercises. then again maybe not if you're allergic to barbells.

a very, very big part of following starting strength or any freeweight program is learning form. people in gyms also generally have no idea wtf, and this includes personal trainers, so getting form tips from gym rats is usually a bad idea. the starting strength package includes a DVD with excellent form videos, but you can also just torrent the entire thing from the pirate bay.

i guess the real question is what you're willing to do to get the results you want.

ItalianStereotype
Jul 8th, 2011, 05:22 AM
I'm not going to be one to criticize his desired results, but he wants Tyler Durden in Auschwitz mode. maybe squatting three times a week isn't the best idea, but that boy needs a little muscle.

Lift weights and stop eating candy

my dad can't sleep without whatever sleeping pills he takes these days. and he can't function in the day without whatever anti-depressant/anti-anxiety stuff he's taking in the daytime.

i can't imagine having to have every aspect of your daily life regulated by pills. i just deal with crippling depression and my increasing attention deficit. fuck. killme.

I was forced into taking psychiatric medication by my parents when I was about 11-12 years old. They were crappy parents and didn't want to pay for actual therapy, so they took me to the office of some thick-accented Greek child specialist named (I can't remember the actual spelling) Titsa Flesch, who diagnosed me with severe depression and ADD. I was given an assortment of drugs and the rest is history.

I tried to just outright quit taking my pills a couple of months ago, forgetting that I had to go to work that day, and had to clock out early because I was extremely depressed, angry at everyone, and couldn't stop shaking.

Aaarg
Jul 8th, 2011, 06:13 PM
niiiiice.

yeah, after years of my mom trying to get me to get on paxil (like the rest of the family) or at least talk to somebody, i went to see a therapist. the first thing i told the woman is that the only reason i'd ever been reluctant about doing so is because i didn't want to take pills or be told to take pills. at the end of that sessions she suggested a psychiatrist so i could try some medication. asshole.

i remember a few years ago when my dad ran out of paxil and didn't take it for one day. he ended up driving through a construction zone to get out of traffic for a moment. he said he nearly hit so much stuff in the process, "and when i got back on the road i was behind the same fucking bitch! i couldn't believe it."

but my girlfriend takes adderall and judging by her and how it affects her, i may have to start taking that when i go back to school because goddamn. it helps her.
