So, in my DELTA class, my teacher has a habit of making me elaborate on an essay on more and more topics; when I wrote my essay on the war in Afghanistan, she wanted to know more SPECIFICALLY about the Taliban, and write another paper on them. Then, she wanted me to write an essay on how I, personally, would end the war. So, after ten minutes of me arguing that 'how the hell should I know how to end a war?!', I wrote a bullshit essay in five or ten minutes about how we should just make all of Afghanistan a huge paperweight by nuking every square inch. I tried to make it as right-winged extremist as I could. Can't wait to see her reaction when she gives it back.

Another thing to be concerned about is that, even though the swine flu is supposed to (according to the doctors in the ER) make you vomit, she hasn't been vomiting or anything. basically, when she came in her symptoms would not have matched the description of swine flu.
But they are going to put her into quarantine :O

H1N1 Flu AKA "Swine Flu"
The symptoms of 2009 H1N1 flu virus in people include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea.
Compared to regular seasonal Flu
The flu usually comes on suddenly and may include these symptoms:
Fever (usually high)
Headache
Extreme tiredness
Dry cough
Sore throat
Runny or stuffy nose
Muscle aches
Stomach symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, also can occur but are more common in children than adults
Dimnos
Sep 24th, 2009, 05:44 PM
About the same shit... Its no worse than regular run of the mill flu. Just a different strain. They are already working on a vaccine that will be out in October. Developed the same way the garden variety flu vaccine is. If anything the H1N1 is more mild because its not quite as hard on the elderly for some reason. They are guessing because there was an H1N1 "outbreak" back in the 70s and there immune systems have some previous experience with it.
Dimnos
Sep 24th, 2009, 05:46 PM
Not to say that the flu doesnt suck or anything. Just that its not as big of a deal as the news would make it out to be. Wash your hands. Take some medicine. Go to your Dr if you need to...

the danger with pandemics isn't just that "everybody will get it" which is just like a regular flu but that everybody will get it and it will mutate and change through all the different conditions and eventually a super virus will emerge and kill everybody.
Kitsa
Sep 24th, 2009, 07:42 PM
but as of right now, the southern hemisphere is wrapping up their flu season and so far the strain (which isn't just swine flu but a combination of swine and avian flu) has not mutated.
LordSappington

the danger with pandemics isn't just that "everybody will get it" which is just like a regular flu but that everybody will get it and it will mutate and change through all the different conditions and eventually a super virus will emerge and kill everybody.
If this is true, wouldn't it be plausible that the common cold should have wiped us out decades ago?
kahljorn
Sep 24th, 2009, 08:01 PM
Yep, except that common colds supposedly don't have either the susceptibility to mutation and the i dunno structure or something to mutate to such dangerous degrees or something. oh yea and also cause our immune systems deal with the common cold all the time but the avian/swine flu is new.
There's something about going from being an animal flu to being a human flu that makes it particularly dangerous i think, but I'm not positive. But yea we have been fucked with by flus like this there was a similar one caused by an avian bird flu at the beginning of the 20th century.
LordSappington
Sep 24th, 2009, 08:06 PM
Dude, nothing mutates like the common cold; that's why they're so common.
I think the main reason animal diseases are so much more dangerous is because it's completely alien to our bodies; there aren't any antibodies whatsoever to combat them.
kahljorn
Sep 24th, 2009, 08:11 PM
yea but they only usually change enough for us to get sick again. It's not like a gigantic change. Plus part of the mutation they talk about with bird flus and stuff is it mutating to be able to go from person to person easier and to afflict humans more specifically, whereas common colds have already done that.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1918_flu_pandemic
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1918_flu_pandemic#Deadly_second_wave
The second wave of the 1918 pandemic was much deadlier than the first. During the first wave, which began in early March, the epidemic resembled typical flu epidemics (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epidemics). Those at the most risk were the sick and elderly, and younger, healthier people recovered easily. But in August, when the second wave began in France (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/France), Sierra Leone (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sierra_Leone) and the United States (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States),[40] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1918_flu_pandemic#cite_note-39) the virus had mutated to a much more deadly form. This has been attributed to the circumstances of the First World War (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_World_War).[41] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1918_flu_pandemic#cite_note-deadzone1-40) In civilian life evolutionary pressures favour a mild strain: those who get really sick stay home, but those mildly ill continue with their lives, go to work and go shopping, preferentially spreading the mild strain. In the trenches the evolutionary pressures were reversed: soldiers with a mild strain remained where they were, while the severely ill were sent on crowded trains to crowded field hospitals, spreading the deadlier virus. So the second wave began and flu quickly spread around the world again.[42] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1918_flu_pandemic#cite_note-deadzone2-41) It was the same flu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flu), in that most of those who recovered from first-wave infections were immune, but it was now far more deadly and the most vulnerable people were those who were like the soldiers in the trenches - young, otherwise healthy, adults.[43] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1918_flu_pandemic#cite_note-42) Consequently, during modern pandemics, health officials pay attention when the virus reaches places with social upheaval, looking for deadlier strains of the virus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virus).[42] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1918_flu_pandemic#cite_note-deadzone2-41)

The part of my hair that DOES grow grew back to normal length in about 3-4 months. It is also super convenient to shave. But if you aren't balding and like your hair, I don't know why you'd do it.

I actually have a friend that does that at the moment while he's still in school. He makes several thousand dollars.
The thing that nobody gets with me is that I like manual labor that's boring and just awful. I don't want a job fours year from now because I'm smart or have a degree. That's if I'm able to get a job at all with that shitty piece of paper.
I feel like I'm going to school for fun. I pretty much can consider it that, get a job at a Waffle House and a shitty apartment, while giving my parents the finger and not looking back. I'm not worried about being able to survive. And I've got my bike, so I don't need a car. If I need to go out of town, there's a bus heading out everywhere.
The only thing I should be petrified about is still not knowing what to do. But I'm here for now, so I'm working my ass off for the rest of the year.

The bizarre thing about that was that there were no papers or tests, all the classes (this was MED SCHOOL, btw) consisted of watching a tape of whatever medical special was on TV the previous night.
